The reliable way to identify an AI-chip equipment supplier is to map the company to the manufacturing stage it actually serves. ASML is the clearest lithography specialist. Applied Materials, Lam Research and Tokyo Electron supply major wafer-process and materials steps, with relevant exposure to high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and advanced packaging. KLA supplies inspection, metrology and process-control systems, while Advantest supplies automated test systems used after wafer fabrication and packaging.
This distinction matters because an AI-chip supply chain includes designers, foundries, memory makers, packaging companies and equipment manufacturers. A company may be economically important to AI chips without selling a single machine used inside a fab. The guide below shows how to verify the difference and how to compare legitimate suppliers.

What counts as an AI-chip manufacturing-equipment supplier?
An equipment supplier designs, manufactures or supports the machinery and control systems used to turn silicon wafers into working processors and memory. Its products normally appear in one or more defined process stages:
| Manufacturing stage | What the equipment does | Supplier examples supported by company descriptions |
|---|---|---|
| Lithography | Projects circuit patterns onto a wafer through a patterned mask or reticle. | ASML |
| Deposition | Builds thin films of materials on the wafer. | Applied Materials, Lam Research, Tokyo Electron |
| Etch | Removes selected material to create three-dimensional structures. | Applied Materials, Lam Research, Tokyo Electron |
| Cleaning | Removes particles, residues and contamination between process steps. | Lam Research, Tokyo Electron |
| Coating and developing | Applies and develops photoresist around lithography exposure. | Tokyo Electron |
| Diffusion and related thermal processes | Changes material properties through controlled heating and chemical treatment. | Applied Materials and other front-end equipment suppliers may cover selected steps; verify the exact product documentation. |
| Inspection and metrology | Finds defects and measures dimensions, films and other process variables. | KLA |
| Advanced packaging | Connects multiple dies, forms interconnects and builds structures such as HBM stacks. | Applied Materials, Lam Research, Tokyo Electron; KLA supplies packaging inspection and metrology. |
| Wafer probing and final test | Checks electrical performance before and after packaging. | Advantest; Tokyo Electron lists probing capabilities. |
The same company can appear in several rows, but that does not make its role interchangeable with every other supplier. A lithography machine, an etch tool, a defect-inspection system and an automated test system solve different manufacturing problems and are purchased at different points in the production flow.

Why AI chips make the equipment map more complicated
AI accelerators combine leading-edge logic with very large amounts of high-bandwidth memory. The manufacturing challenge therefore extends beyond making a small transistor: manufacturers must build dense logic, produce memory dies, stack those dies and connect them to the processor in a package that can move enormous volumes of data.
HBM is a useful example of why a simple “who makes AI chips?” list is misleading. Applied Materials says an HBM manufacturing flow adds around 19 materials-engineering steps to the approximately 700 process steps required for a conventional DRAM. The company says its equipment serves about 75 percent of those HBM-related steps. Those figures describe process coverage, not a claim that one vendor supplies an entire HBM factory.
Packaging also becomes a major equipment market. Applied Materials expected HBM packaging revenue to exceed $600 million in fiscal 2024. That is a company forecast for that fiscal year, not a permanent market size or a guarantee of revenue. It nevertheless shows why back-end and packaging tools belong in an AI-equipment analysis alongside front-end wafer tools.
A step-by-step method for identifying a real supplier
- Name the process stage first. Decide whether you are looking for lithography, deposition, etch, cleaning, coating and developing, thermal processing, inspection, metrology, packaging, probing or final test.
- Read the company’s own product description. Credit a company only for stages its documentation explicitly names. ASML states that it designs and manufactures lithography machines essential to chip manufacturing. Tokyo Electron states that it manufactures equipment that produces semiconductors. Advantest places its test systems mainly at the end of wafer production and in final inspection after packaging.
- Separate front-end and back-end exposure. Front-end tools process the wafer. Back-end tools assemble dies, form packages and test finished devices. HBM demand can involve both.
- Check the AI-specific connection. Look for explicit references to DRAM, HBM, 3D stacking, advanced packaging, leading-edge logic or AI-related demand. A generic industrial supplier should not be labeled an AI-chip supplier without this connection.
- Verify process-control capabilities. Inspection, metrology, chemistry control and software can determine whether a sophisticated process produces acceptable yield. Include these suppliers even though they do not pattern or cut silicon themselves.
- Check the point of use. A test-system provider may be essential after wafer fabrication rather than during lithography or etch. A packaging-equipment provider may serve an assembly house or an integrated device manufacturer.
- Compare like with like. Compare lithography companies with lithography companies, process-tool companies with process-tool companies and test vendors with test vendors. Do not rank a defect-inspection supplier against a wafer-etch supplier as if they sold the same machine.
- Record evidence and qualifications. Note whether a figure is a fiscal-year result, an expectation, an installed-base measure, a patent count or a product claim. Keep the date and scope attached to the number.

ASML: the lithography identifier
When a reader asks which company supplies the machines that print the smallest circuit patterns, ASML is the clearest answer in this set. The company says, “We design and manufacture the lithography machines that are an essential part of chip manufacturing.” Lithography is the step that transfers a circuit pattern to a wafer through exposure and subsequent resist processing.
That statement supports a precise classification: ASML is a lithography-equipment supplier. It does not mean ASML makes every tool in a fab, supplies every packaging machine or performs the wafer process on behalf of a chipmaker. Its role is the exposure system and the associated hardware, software and services described in its company materials.
For an AI-equipment database, place ASML in a lithography category first. Add an AI connection only when the record identifies the logic or memory production context in which the lithography system is used; do not infer a specific AI-chip customer or model from the company’s general role.
Applied Materials: materials engineering from wafer to HBM packaging
Applied Materials is best identified by the breadth of materials-engineering steps it addresses rather than by a single machine category. Its HBM description says the memory flow adds around 19 materials-engineering steps to approximately 700 conventional DRAM steps and that its equipment serves about 75 percent of those added steps.

The company describes both front-end and back-end equipment serving HBM stacks. Its fiscal 2024 expectation that HBM packaging revenue would exceed $600 million is an exposure indicator for that period, not a statement that all of the company’s revenue comes from AI.

Classify Applied Materials as a broad materials and process-equipment supplier. In a comparison, separate its HBM coverage from its overall portfolio: “75 percent” refers to the added HBM materials-engineering steps described by the company, not to 75 percent of every machine in an HBM factory.
Lam Research: etch, deposition, cleaning and memory integration
Lam Research’s AI-era materials identify DRAM, NAND, advanced packaging and logic as relevant markets. Its memory materials connect HBM with three-dimensional stacking and packaging. Those references make Lam a process-equipment supplier with a particularly important role in the structures that store and connect memory.
Etch and deposition are complementary parts of wafer fabrication: deposition builds films, while etch selectively removes them to create the intended structures. Cleaning is required between many steps to remove residues and particles. A supplier that covers these operations can be central to memory scaling without being a lithography company.

When recording Lam’s AI exposure, write the chain explicitly: process tools for logic and memory, plus stated relevance to HBM, 3D stacking and advanced packaging. Avoid describing Lam as an HBM manufacturer; the evidence supports equipment and process technology, not ownership of a memory-production line.
Tokyo Electron: broad front-end coverage plus probing and packaging
Tokyo Electron says, “Tokyo Electron manufactures the equipment that produces semiconductors.” Its process summary names deposition, coater/developer, etching and cleaning as four key processes. It also lists probing, bonding and advanced packaging among its capabilities.
This combination gives Tokyo Electron two useful entries in an AI-chip map. First, it is a broad front-end process-equipment supplier. Second, its listed probing, bonding and packaging capabilities connect it to the back end, where memory and logic dies are assembled.
Two company-reported scale indicators help identify the company but must remain date-qualified: Tokyo Electron reported 2.4435 trillion yen in semiconductor-production-equipment sales as of fiscal 2026 and 24,996 patents as of fiscal 2025. Those figures describe the company at those fiscal-year reference points; they are not a current-period forecast or a measure of AI-only sales.

Inspection finds defects; metrology measures whether dimensions, films and other variables match the process target. Chemistry control and in-situ management help a fab detect drift while a process is running. Together, these capabilities influence yield: the proportion of manufactured devices that meet specification.
KLA’s advanced-packaging materials describe AI-enabled DefectWise inspection and classification for packaging. That is directly relevant to HBM and multi-die products, where defects at an interface or in a package can make an otherwise good die unusable. Classify KLA as a process-control, inspection and metrology supplier, not as a wafer-patterning company.
Advantest: test after wafer fabrication and packaging
Advantest supplies semiconductor test systems rather than the machines that form transistor structures. Its portfolio includes SoC and memory test systems, automated test equipment, handlers, metrology/SEM and software. Its technology description places these systems mainly at the end of wafer production and in final inspection after packaging.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →That timing is important. A wafer can complete hundreds of fabrication steps and still require electrical testing to identify good and bad dies. After assembly, packaged devices need another inspection and test cycle. AI accelerators and HBM products add demanding electrical and bandwidth requirements, making test capacity part of the manufacturing chain even though it occurs after most front-end processing.
In a supplier directory, use categories such as “wafer sort,” “system-level or final test” and “memory test” only when the company documentation supports them. Advantest’s documented role supports semiconductor test and related handlers and software; it does not support labeling the company a lithography or deposition vendor.
How HBM and advanced packaging change the comparison
HBM is not simply conventional DRAM placed next to a processor. The dies are stacked and connected through a package designed for high data movement. That creates additional materials, alignment, bonding, inspection, thermal and test requirements.
Front-end requirements
Memory dies still require deposition, etch, cleaning, coating and developing, thermal processing and inspection. Suppliers such as Applied Materials, Lam Research and Tokyo Electron should therefore be checked for the particular memory process steps they name, not merely for the word “AI.”
Stacking and bonding requirements
Stacking introduces back-end operations that connect multiple dies. Tokyo Electron lists probing, bonding and advanced packaging; Applied Materials describes front-end and back-end equipment for HBM stacks; Lam Research links HBM to 3D stacking and packaging. These statements establish relevant capability categories, but they do not prove that one vendor supplies every tool in a complete HBM line.

Inspection and yield requirements
More interfaces create more opportunities for defects. KLA’s inspection, metrology and packaging-control systems address that measurement problem. A comparison that omits KLA because it does not “make the chip” misses the equipment needed to decide whether the process is working.
Electrical test requirements
After wafer processing and packaging, Advantest’s test systems can be used to assess devices. This final stage is essential when a complex package contains several dies whose combined behavior must meet specification.

Many companies associated with AI semiconductors do not sell manufacturing equipment. Use the following tests before adding a company to an equipment list:
- Product test: Does the company name a machine, system, tool, inspection platform or test platform used in a stated manufacturing step?
- Stage test: Can you place that product in lithography, wafer processing, inspection, packaging or test?
- Documentation test: Is the role described in the company’s own product or corporate materials rather than inferred from a customer relationship?
- Ownership test: Is the company supplying equipment, or is it designing chips, operating a foundry, making memory or providing outsourced assembly?
- Scope test: Does the evidence support an AI-specific connection, or only a general semiconductor role?
A chip designer may buy equipment without manufacturing it. A foundry may operate hundreds of tools without selling any. A packaging house may assemble AI products but not manufacture the bonding or inspection systems it uses. Keep those business models separate.
A practical comparison framework
For an investment, procurement or industry-analysis spreadsheet, create one row per supplier and record the following fields:
| Field | What to record | Why it prevents errors |
|---|---|---|
| Primary process role | Lithography, deposition, etch, cleaning, inspection, packaging or test. | Stops unlike companies from being compared as direct substitutes. |
| Named products or systems | The equipment family or system type stated by the supplier. | Confirms that the company actually sells equipment. |
| AI exposure | Logic, DRAM, HBM, 3D NAND, advanced packaging or test reference. | Separates general semiconductor exposure from AI-relevant exposure. |
| Process position | Front end, back end, process control or final test. | Shows when the equipment is used. |
| Evidence type | Product description, annual report, technology page, fiscal result or forecast. | Keeps forecasts and historical figures from being mixed. |
| Date and qualification | Fiscal year, reporting period and geographic or product scope where stated. | Prevents an old or limited figure from being presented as current and universal. |
Common identification mistakes and how to correct them
Mistake: treating “AI supplier” as a manufacturing-equipment category
Correction: Start with the process stage. The phrase “AI supplier” can describe a chip designer, memory maker, foundry, packaging provider or equipment company. Only the stage-and-product test identifies the equipment class.
Mistake: calling every wafer tool a lithography machine
Correction: Reserve lithography for exposure systems. Deposition, etch, cleaning and coater/developer tools are different categories, even when they are installed in the same fab.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMistake: counting inspection as optional support
Correction: Include process control. KLA’s inspection, metrology, chemistry control and software determine whether advanced logic, DRAM, 3D NAND and packages are within specification and whether defects can be found early.
Best Value
Mistake: using a company-wide number as an AI-only number
Correction: Keep the scope attached. Tokyo Electron’s 2.4435 trillion yen figure is semiconductor-production-equipment sales for fiscal 2026, not AI-only sales. Applied Materials’ more than $600 million HBM-packaging figure was an expectation for fiscal 2024, not a recurring market total.
Mistake: assuming one supplier covers an entire HBM flow
Correction: Break the flow into materials, wafer processing, stacking, bonding, inspection and test. Applied Materials’ approximately 75 percent figure refers to the added HBM materials-engineering steps described by the company, not every tool required in the factory.
Mistake: identifying a supplier from a customer rumor
Correction: Require primary documentation that names the product and process. A reported relationship with a chipmaker is not proof that the company supplies manufacturing equipment.
A concise checklist for future supplier research
- Write down the exact manufacturing step before searching for a company.
- Confirm that the company’s own documentation names equipment for that step.
- Mark the supplier as front-end, back-end, process-control or test.
- Look specifically for HBM, DRAM, 3D stacking, advanced packaging or AI-logic references.
- Record whether the evidence is a capability statement, fiscal result, patent count or forecast.
- Attach the fiscal year or date to every numerical claim.
- Do not compare a lithography specialist directly with an inspection or test company on the basis of “AI exposure” alone.
- Keep designers, foundries, memory manufacturers and packaging houses in separate lists unless their own documentation shows that they also sell equipment.
What the complete AI-equipment chain looks like
The most useful mental model is a sequence rather than a ranking. Lithography defines patterns. Deposition, etch, cleaning, coating and thermal processes build the structures. Inspection and metrology measure whether those structures meet the target. Packaging and bonding connect logic and memory dies, including HBM stacks. Probing and final test determine whether the completed devices work.
Under that model, ASML is the lithography specialist; Applied Materials, Lam Research and Tokyo Electron cover broad process and materials steps; KLA provides the process-control layer; and Advantest handles semiconductor test. HBM and advanced packaging link all of these stages, which is why an accurate supplier list must include both wafer-fabrication tools and the equipment used after the wafer leaves the front end.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which company is the clearest lithography-equipment supplier for AI chips?
ASML. Its company description identifies lithography machines as an essential part of chip manufacturing; that classification does not mean it supplies every other fab or packaging tool.
Why should inspection and metrology companies be included in an AI-chip equipment list?
Advanced logic, DRAM, HBM and packaging require tight control of defects and dimensions. KLA’s documented inspection, metrology, chemistry-control and software systems address that process-control layer.

Where does semiconductor test fit in the manufacturing sequence?
Advantest places its test systems mainly at the end of wafer production and in final inspection after packaging. This is separate from front-end tools such as lithography, deposition and etch.
Does a company-wide semiconductor-equipment sales figure measure AI-chip exposure?
No. For example, Tokyo Electron’s 2.4435 trillion yen figure is reported semiconductor-production-equipment sales for fiscal 2026, not AI-only revenue. Numerical claims must retain their stated period and scope.
