To tell a genuine Yandex crawler from a spoofed User-Agent, start with your server logs, then verify the source IP with reverse and forward DNS. Manage crawling in the root /robots.txt with a crawler-specific rule, validate the file in Yandex Webmaster, and treat Yandex Metrica’s robot reports as a separate measurement from HTTP request logs. This workflow lets you reduce unnecessary load without blocking useful indexing or mistaking robot activity for human visits.
Start with the right measurement
“Yandexbot traffic” can mean three different things, and each view answers a different question:

| View | What it measures | Best use | What it cannot prove alone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Web-server access logs | Every HTTP request your server records, including pages, CSS, JavaScript, images, feeds, status codes and failed requests. | Investigating a specific IP, URL, timestamp, response code or request burst. | That a User-Agent claiming to be Yandex is authentic. |
| Yandex Metrica Robots report | Robot activity that reached the Metrica tag and was classified by Metrica’s detection systems. | Understanding how recognized robots affect Metrica reports and examining a load surge alongside the Load on site report. | The total number of crawler requests; untagged resources and requests never reaching the tag are absent. |
| Yandex Webmaster crawl data | Yandex’s indexing and crawling information, including URL and response-code context. | Checking crawl behavior, affected URLs and whether a crawl-control change had an indexing consequence. | A complete account of all non-Yandex requests in your infrastructure. |
A crawler can fetch a page or a resource without creating an ordinary analytics session. Conversely, Metrica can identify robot behavior using signals beyond the User-Agent. Never add Metrica robot sessions to raw log requests or assume the two totals should match.
How do I know if Yandexbot is real?
1. Preserve request-level evidence
Use an access-log format that records, at minimum, the timestamp, source IP address, complete User-Agent, requested path and response status. Include the referrer, query string, response size and request duration when available. Keep the full path: a crawler repeatedly requesting a service endpoint, filtered URL or alternate representation may be creating more load than ordinary page requests.

Group requests by IP, User-Agent and normalized URL. Look for a sequence rather than a single line: repeated requests from one address, consistent timing, and a mixture of HTML and supporting resources provide context, but none of those patterns establishes identity.
2. Treat the User-Agent as a claim
A string containing YandexBot can be forged by any client. It is useful for triage and for selecting a robots.txt group, but it is not authentication. Do not whitelist an address merely because the User-Agent looks familiar.
3. Perform reverse and forward DNS checks
For each IP that matters, reverse-resolve the address to a hostname. Yandex’s Webmaster guidance says an authentic robot hostname should end in yandex.ru, yandex.net or yandex.com. Then forward-resolve that hostname and confirm that the original IP appears in the returned addresses. The two-way check prevents an attacker from choosing a convincing hostname that does not map back to the connecting address.
On a Unix-like system, the basic checks are:
dig -x 203.0.113.25 +short
dig crawler.example.yandex.net +short
On Windows, run nslookup 203.0.113.25, note the returned hostname, then run nslookup hostname-returned-by-the-first-command. Use the actual address and hostname from your log; the example address above is only a syntax illustration.
Yandex also provides an IP-address check tool for its indexing bots in Webmaster. Use it as an additional check, not as a substitute for retaining the original log line and performing the DNS comparison.

Why a static IP list is unsafe
Yandex says robot IP addresses change frequently and does not publish a complete permanent list. A hard-coded allowlist can become stale, reject a legitimate crawler, or give false confidence when an attacker uses an address that once belonged to a crawler. DNS verification at investigation time is safer than relying on an old list.
Which Yandex robot is making the request?
Yandex robots are not one uniform service. The identity and purpose determine whether a request is related to search indexing, rendering or another product.
| Observed identity or class | Likely purpose | How to interpret it | Control caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main indexing robot, commonly identified with a YandexBot User-Agent | Fetching pages and links for indexing and recrawling. | Evaluate URL coverage, status codes, canonicalization and crawl demand. | A rule for a named Yandex group can take precedence over a wildcard group. |
| Rendering or resource-fetching robots | Retrieving files needed to render a page. | CSS, JavaScript, images and other assets may appear in logs without a pageview session. | A rule aimed at the main indexer may not govern every auxiliary identity. |
| Screenshot or other service robots | Generating previews or performing product-specific fetches. | Classify the request by its documented User-Agent and requested resource before blocking it. | Some auxiliary robots have separate identities and behavior. |
YandexMetrika/4.0 |
Fetching and caching CSS so Webvisor can render pages. | It is a Metrica-related resource request, not proof of a search-indexing visit. | Yandex documents this robot as ignoring robots.txt directives while fetching CSS for Webvisor. |
When a request is verified as Yandex-owned but its purpose is unclear, inspect the requested file type, the surrounding requests and the relevant Yandex product documentation. Do not classify every Yandex-labeled line as an indexing crawl.
Why is Yandexbot visiting so often?
High request volume is a diagnosis problem before it is a blocking problem. In logs and Webmaster crawl statistics, identify the URLs and response codes responsible for the increase.
- Duplicate URL forms: tracking parameters, sorting options, session identifiers and multiple slash or case variants can expose many URLs containing the same content.
- Service and search endpoints: internal search, calendars, feeds, APIs and faceted navigation can create an effectively unlimited URL space.
- Repeated errors: a large number of 404, 410, 403 or 5xx responses can indicate broken links, a deployment problem or a crawler repeatedly revisiting an unstable endpoint.
- Heavy resources: rendering-related CSS, JavaScript or image requests can consume bandwidth even when the number of HTML pages is modest.
- Recent site changes: redirects, canonical changes, sitemap updates or a new URL pattern can temporarily alter crawl demand.
Export a time-bounded sample, sort by URL and status, and calculate request counts and transferred bytes. Fix duplicate generation, broken links or server errors at their source before imposing a broad crawler block. A crawl-rate setting cannot repair an application that emits millions of unnecessary URLs.

How can I control Yandexbot in robots.txt?
Put the file where the crawler expects it
Serve the file at the site root as /robots.txt. It must be reachable by indexing bots and return HTTP status 200. Check redirects, authentication requirements, CDN rules and content negotiation; a file that is unavailable or malformed cannot reliably express your policy.
Choose the correct User-agent group
Yandex’s documentation says the main indexing bot looks for a User-agent entry containing Yandex or *. A Yandex-specific group can take precedence over the wildcard group. This means a restrictive wildcard policy does not automatically tell you how a named Yandex group will be handled, and a rule written for one named robot may not cover other Yandex services.
For example, this policy blocks the main Yandex group from a private area while allowing one public file:
User-agent: Yandex
Disallow: /private/
Allow: /private/public-report.html
User-agent: *
Disallow:
This policy blocks all paths for the Yandex group:
User-agent: Yandex
Disallow: /
Use the narrowest path that solves the problem. Blocking an entire site is appropriate only when you deliberately want to prevent that crawler from fetching the site; it is not a substitute for removing a single parameter pattern or fixing duplicate URLs.
Use supported directives deliberately
| Directive | Purpose | Operational note |
|---|---|---|
User-agent |
Selects the robot identity to which following rules apply. | Use a Yandex-specific group when the control should not affect other crawlers. |
Disallow |
Prevents crawling of matching paths. | It controls fetching, not guaranteed removal from search results. |
Allow |
Permits an exception within a broader disallowed path. | Test the exact URL in the validator, including slash and case differences. |
Sitemap |
Points crawlers to an XML sitemap. | Use the complete sitemap URL and keep the sitemap’s URLs consistent with your crawl policy. |
Clean-param |
Describes URL parameters that do not change page content. | Apply it only after confirming which parameters are genuinely non-content-affecting. |
Validate before relying on a change
Use Yandex Webmaster’s Robots.txt analysis tool to validate the syntax and test particular URLs. Test both a URL you intend to allow and one you intend to block. After publishing, request /robots.txt directly from an external network and confirm the response body and HTTP status, then monitor logs for the expected change.

Understand the indexing limitation
Robots.txt can stop a crawler from retrieving a URL, but it cannot guarantee that the URL disappears from Yandex search. If the crawler is blocked, it may be unable to read a page-level removal instruction. When the objective is search removal rather than crawl reduction, allow the appropriate crawler to access the page and use an appropriate page-level instruction or HTTP response header, such as a correctly implemented noindex policy. Keep the removal instruction accessible long enough for Yandex to process it.
Do not assume every Yandex service obeys the same rule
Some auxiliary robots have separate identities, and Yandex documents YandexMetrika/4.0 as ignoring robots.txt while fetching CSS for Webvisor. If a resource continues to appear after a rule aimed at the main indexing group, verify the actual User-Agent and the service purpose before escalating the block.
Should you change the crawl rate?
Yandex Webmaster uses automatic optimization by default. A manually selected crawl rate is a recommendation, not a hard traffic ceiling; the actual rate can differ according to information Yandex has about the site. Change the setting only after you can show, from logs and Webmaster data, which URLs or periods are causing a problem. Record the old setting, define a measurable goal such as lower requests to a failing endpoint, and watch response codes, server latency and indexing coverage after the change.
How do I filter bot traffic in Yandex Metrica?
Use the Robots report for tag-recorded activity
In Yandex Metrica, open the Robots report to inspect robot activity recorded by the Metrica tag. During a load surge, compare it with the Load on site report to see whether recognized robot activity coincides with the timing of the increase. The report is useful for analytics interpretation, but it is not a replacement for access logs.
Recommended Free Tools
Know the two detection outcomes
Metrica says known User-Agent robots are excluded from statistical data immediately. Sessions that Metrica identifies from behavioral and other technical signals are included by default and can be excluded through report segmentation. This distinction matters when a session has no obvious robot User-Agent: Metrica’s classification is not simply a transcription of the header.
Best Value
Use Metrica’s compare options to examine data with and without robots, or create a segment that excludes the robot classification for the reports where human-only metrics are needed. Document the segment definition so analysts do not compare a robot-excluded report with an unfiltered report and mistake the difference for a site change.
Do not transfer Metrica rules to other platforms
Yandex states that Metrica and Yandex Direct use different systems for detecting robot sessions. Their classifications are therefore not interchangeable, and behavior in one analytics product does not establish how another analytics platform filters bots. Consult the documentation for any third-party analytics system before applying an equivalent setting.
A safe investigation runbook
- Inspect: save a representative log sample with timestamp, path, status, IP and full User-Agent; include resource requests.
- Verify: reverse-resolve each important IP, require a hostname ending in
yandex.ru,yandex.netoryandex.com, forward-resolve it, and compare the returned IP with the log address. - Confirm: use Yandex Webmaster’s IP-check tool where applicable and retain the result with the incident record.
- Classify: decide whether the verified request is indexing, rendering, screenshot generation, Metrica resource fetching or another service.
- Inspect controls: read the root
/robots.txt, test affected URLs in Webmaster’s analyzer, and check whether a named group or wildcard group governs them. - Measure impact: use Webmaster crawl statistics for URL and response-code context, and use Metrica’s Robots and Load on site reports for tag-recorded activity.
- Adjust narrowly: fix duplicate or failing URLs first; only then change robots rules or recommend a crawl rate, and monitor the result in logs.
Common failure cases and fixes
The User-Agent says Yandex, but DNS does not verify
Classify the request as unverified or spoofed. Do not grant it crawler privileges, and investigate the IP like any other client. A failed reverse lookup, a hostname outside the documented Yandex suffixes, or a forward lookup that returns a different address is sufficient reason not to treat the request as genuine Yandex traffic.
DNS verifies, but no Metrica session appears
This is normal for a crawler that fetches HTML or resources without executing the tag, for a request to an untagged URL, or for a service whose purpose is unrelated to page analytics. Use the server log and Webmaster data for request-level and indexing questions.
Metrica shows robots, but log totals are lower
Metrica’s Robots report counts activity sent to the tag, while logs count HTTP requests. Different collection times, caching, untagged pages, resource requests and filtering stages can all produce different totals. Compare time windows and definitions before treating the difference as an outage.
A blocked URL still appears in search
That outcome is consistent with robots.txt’s crawling limitation. Remove the blocking rule for the affected URL, publish the appropriate page-level or HTTP-header removal instruction, and allow the crawler to retrieve it so the instruction can be seen.
Indexing falls after a robots.txt edit
Check group precedence, spelling, path boundaries and the live HTTP 200 response. Test representative URLs in Webmaster’s analyzer, then inspect logs to confirm which requests changed. A rule written for one named Yandex identity may not have the intended effect on another, so match the observed User-Agent to the group you edited.
