The reliable way to identify AI bot traffic is to start with HTTP request logs, filter for documented User-Agent tokens such as GPTBot or OAI-SearchBot, and then verify the claiming requests against the operator’s current IP list or reverse-DNS procedure. A User-Agent match is only a candidate, because any client can send that string.
Keep crawler requests separate from referrals reported by web analytics. Logs answer which client requested a URL; analytics referrals answer whether a person arrived from an AI product. Those are different events and must be counted, labeled and interpreted independently.

What AI bot traffic means in a measurement system
“AI bot traffic” is not one uniform category. It can mean an automated crawler fetching pages for indexing, search retrieval, model-related collection or another machine task. It can also be confused with a user-directed fetch, in which an AI service requests a page because a person asked it to do so. Finally, an analytics report may show a human visitor whose referral URL belongs to an AI product. These events happen at different layers.
- Request traffic: An origin server, CDN or WAF records an HTTP request, usually with a timestamp, client IP, path, status code and User-Agent.
- Referral traffic: A client-side analytics tag records a browser session and may attribute it to a referring service.
- Identity evidence: A User-Agent token, published IP range or DNS check provides varying levels of confidence that the requester is the operator it claims to be.
Count these dimensions separately. A crawler can fetch thousands of pages and send no human visitors. Conversely, people can arrive from an AI service even when no crawler request appears in your own logs.

Choose the log source before writing a filter
Use the dataset that actually sees the request. An origin access log is appropriate when traffic reaches your server directly. If a CDN or WAF terminates the connection first, its request log may be the authoritative record. A reverse proxy can make every request appear to originate from the proxy’s address, so do not match crawler IP ranges against the proxy IP.
Fields to retain
For each record, preserve at least the following fields:
- Timestamp, with a stated timezone.
- Client IP as observed by the trusted edge, or the platform’s original-client-IP field when a proxy is in front of the origin.
- Requested method and path, including the query string policy you use for aggregation.
- HTTP response status and, where available, response size and latency.
- User-Agent string exactly as received.
- Host, scheme and the log source (origin, CDN or WAF), so records from different layers are not silently added together.
Forwarded-IP headers are useful only when your proxy configuration makes them trustworthy. Treat an arbitrary header supplied by a direct client as untrusted. If you cannot establish which field contains the original address, label IP verification as unavailable rather than guessing.
Filter requests by documented User-Agent tokens
Begin with the operator’s published bot documentation and build a dated list of tokens. Search the raw User-Agent field, not a normalized browser category, because normalization can discard the identifying text. Cloudflare’s detection guidance lists common AI-related crawlers such as Meta-ExternalAgent, GPTBot, GoogleOther, Amazonbot and PetalBot; names and formats can change, so maintain the list rather than treating it as permanent. See Cloudflare’s AI bot detection guidance.
For OpenAI traffic, the current documentation distinguishes three labels that should not be collapsed into one total. OpenAI’s crawler documentation describes GPTBot as a crawler for content that may be used in training its foundation models, OAI-SearchBot as the crawler used to surface websites in ChatGPT search, and ChatGPT-User as a page fetch that can occur in response to a user action rather than an automatic web crawler.
| Token or class | Documented role | How to report it |
|---|---|---|
GPTBot |
Automated crawling for content that may be used in training foundation models. | Report as a GPTBot candidate, with a separate verified count after IP or DNS checks. |
OAI-SearchBot |
Crawling to surface websites in ChatGPT search. | Keep separate from GPTBot because purpose and policy decisions can differ. |
ChatGPT-User |
A fetch initiated by a user action, not an automatic crawler. | Report as user-directed fetch activity, not as routine crawler volume. |
| Other documented tokens | Roles vary by operator and can change. | Use the operator’s current description and retain the exact token and date checked. |
A token match is a search result, not proof of identity. Put matches into a candidate bucket until the client address passes the operator’s verification method.
Verify that the requester is the claimed bot
Verification combines the User-Agent claim with network evidence. Cloudflare’s IP validation guidance describes two common approaches: compare the client IP with the operator’s published ranges, or use a documented reverse-DNS process. The exact procedure is operator-specific, so follow the current instructions rather than copying an old range into a permanent rule.
Published IP-list check
- Extract the trusted original client IP from the origin, CDN or WAF record.
- Retrieve the operator’s current public IP list from its official documentation and record the retrieval date.
- Test whether the address belongs to one of those ranges.
- Require a matching documented User-Agent token as well. An address in a published range without the expected token should be investigated, not automatically counted as the bot.
- Store the result as
verified, candidateorfailed, with the rule version used.
Reverse-DNS check
- Perform a PTR lookup for the client IP.
- Compare the returned hostname with the operator’s documented domain pattern.
- If the operator requires it, perform a forward lookup of that hostname and confirm that it resolves back to the original IP.
- Combine the DNS result with the User-Agent match and retain both pieces of evidence.
Do not call a request verified merely because its reverse hostname contains a familiar word. Use the operator’s stated domain and forward-confirmation requirements. A User-Agent is supplied by the requester and can be forged; DNS and published ranges raise confidence but still need to be evaluated under the operator’s current rules.

Handle stale or unavailable evidence
Published ranges and User-Agent formats can change. If the documentation is unavailable, out of date or does not provide a verification method, keep the request in the candidate category and state that identity could not be confirmed. Never turn an unverified count into a claim about a specific operator.
Measure what the crawler actually did
After classification, aggregate by verified crawler, path, time window, response code and request count. This converts a list of suspicious lines into an operational picture: which pages were requested, whether the server returned them successfully, and whether activity was concentrated or repetitive.
| Dimension | Question it answers | Useful interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Verified agent | Which documented operator passed identity checks? | Separates stronger evidence from User-Agent-only candidates. |
| Path | Which URLs were requested? | Shows whether activity focuses on articles, feeds, search endpoints or other resources. |
| Time window | When and for how long did requests occur? | Reveals bursts, steady polling or one-time visits. |
| Status code | Did the request succeed? | Distinguishes delivered content from redirects, denials and server errors. |
| Request count | How many HTTP requests were recorded? | Quantifies load, but is not a count of people or citations. |
For a small site, a text search grouped by day may be sufficient. At larger volumes, send origin, CDN or WAF records to a log-analytics system. Cloudflare recommends combining website logs with log analytics when investigating AI crawlers; its guidance is available at this detection overview.

The exact field names vary by platform, but the logic should be consistent:
- Select records whose User-Agent contains one of your dated, documented tokens.
- Normalize the token into an agent label while retaining the original string.
- Join the record to the IP-range or DNS verification result.
- Group verified and unverified records separately by day, path and status.
- Export the candidate and verified totals with the log source and time window attached.
Do not deduplicate solely on IP address. Shared infrastructure, retries and multiple paths can all produce legitimate separate requests. If you deduplicate, document the key and purpose—for example, unique request IDs for troubleshooting versus raw request count for load measurement.
Do not confuse crawler logs with AI referrals
Server and edge logs observe network requests even when no browser analytics code runs. Web analytics products generally depend on client-side instrumentation and report sessions, page views or referrers. A crawler may not execute that code, and a human referral may never expose the crawler’s User-Agent in your logs.
| Metric | Source | What it can support | What it cannot prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI crawler requests | Origin, CDN or WAF access logs | Which paths were requested, by which claimed and verified agent, and with what response. | That a person saw the page or that the request generated a referral. |
| AI referral sessions | Client-side analytics and referrer data | Visits attributed to an AI service under that analytics system’s rules. | That the service’s crawler previously fetched the page. |
Keep both datasets if you need to study discovery and audience behavior, but label their definitions, clocks and coverage. A crawler count cannot be used as a substitute for referral sessions, and a zero-referral report does not show that crawling did not occur.

Use robots.txt as a policy signal, not authentication
Robots.txt communicates crawl preferences to compliant crawlers. It does not authenticate a requester, guarantee that a request came from the named operator or prevent a non-compliant client from requesting a public URL. Cloudflare describes robots.txt as non-binding guidance and distinguishes it from bot verification; see its detection guidance and its verified-bots explanation.

Use robots.txt to publish your intended crawl policy, then use log and network verification to determine what actually happened. If access control is required, implement authentication, authorization or an edge rule appropriate to the resource; a robots directive alone is not an access-control mechanism.
Compare agents without implying they are equivalent
When several agents appear in a report, compare four axes: purpose, identity confidence, request activity and measurement source. A useful report might look like this:
| Agent record | Purpose | Identity confidence | Activity fields | Measurement source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GPTBot | Potential training-related crawling. | User-Agent match, or verified by current IP/DNS evidence. | Requests, paths, timing and statuses. | Server/CDN/WAF logs. |
| OAI-SearchBot | Surfacing pages in ChatGPT search. | User-Agent match, or verified by current IP/DNS evidence. | Requests, paths, timing and statuses. | Server/CDN/WAF logs. |
| ChatGPT-User | User-directed page fetch. | User-Agent match, or verified by current IP/DNS evidence. | Individual fetches and responses, not automatic crawl rate. | Server/CDN/WAF logs. |
| AI referral | Human visit attributed by analytics. | Analytics attribution, not crawler identity. | Sessions, landing pages and referrer values. | Web analytics. |
This structure prevents a large request total from being presented as audience reach and prevents unlike OpenAI agents from being merged into a single unexplained number.

1. Define the question and time window
Write down whether you are measuring network load, pages fetched, identity-confirmed operators or human referrals. State the start and end timestamps and timezone. The same log can support all four questions, but the calculations and conclusions differ.
2. Freeze the source and schema
Record whether the data came from the origin, CDN or WAF. Confirm which field contains the original client IP and preserve the raw User-Agent. If traffic is visible at more than one layer, avoid adding records that represent the same request twice.
3. Apply the documented-token filter
Use the current operator documentation to select tokens. Keep the date of the documentation beside the filter. Include a catch-all review queue for unfamiliar agents instead of labeling every automated request as AI traffic.
4. Verify candidates
Run the published-IP or reverse-DNS procedure. Mark failures and unknowns explicitly. Store the evidence so another analyst can reproduce the decision after ranges or DNS records change.

Every matching User-Agent is counted as genuine
Why it fails: User-Agent text is self-declared and easy to copy.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Fix: Keep a candidate bucket and verify with current published IP data or the operator’s documented DNS process. Report the two totals separately.
The CDN address is checked instead of the client address
Why it fails: A reverse proxy can hide the requester’s network address.
Fix: Use the platform’s trusted original-client-IP field and document the forwarding configuration. If it cannot be trusted, do not claim IP verification.
All OpenAI-related requests are merged
Why it fails: GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User have different documented purposes.

Fix: Preserve each token as a separate agent and explain its role in the report.
Best Value
Referral dashboards are used to estimate crawling
Why it fails: Analytics tags measure browser sessions and referrers, while crawlers may not run those tags.
Fix: Count HTTP requests in server, CDN or WAF logs and label referral sessions as a separate metric.
Robots.txt is treated as a security control
Why it fails: Robots.txt is guidance for compliant clients, not proof of identity or a technical barrier.
Fix: Use authentication or edge access controls for protected resources, and use logs plus verification to evaluate actual requests.
Historical ranges are left in production forever
Why it fails: Operators can change User-Agent formats and published IP ranges.
Fix: Date every rule, review the operator documentation periodically and reclassify old records if the evidence or procedure changes.
How much confidence should a report claim?
Use language that matches the evidence:
- Candidate request: The User-Agent matched a documented token, but network identity was not verified.
- Identity-verified request: The token matched and the client IP or DNS result passed the operator’s current documented check.
- Unclassified automation: The request appears automated, but no reliable operator identity was established.
- Referral session: Analytics attributed a browser session to an AI service; this is not a crawler identity claim.
Always attach the measurement source and date range. A statement such as “30% of traffic was GPTBot” is ambiguous unless it says whether the denominator is an AI-only crawler set, all HTTP requests, candidate matches or verified requests.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPutting the Cloudflare 2025 statistic in context
Cloudflare reported that GPTBot’s share rose from 5% in May 2024 to 30% in May 2025. The comparison covered an AI-only crawler set identified by matching crawler names in User-Agent strings. It is a vendor-specific, dated share—not a universal percentage of all web traffic and not a current ranking. The original report is Cloudflare’s 2025 crawler analysis.
Use that statistic as historical context only. Your own result should use your site’s log source, denominator, verification rules and time window.
