If you only remember the melody, use Google’s hum search or SoundHound. If you know the game or scene, search its soundtrack and credits, then verify any app result against an official release or the game’s music credits.
Choose the method that matches what you still have
Your best route depends on whether the original audio is available, whether you can reproduce only the melody, or whether you know the game and scene. Start with the first applicable row rather than trying every service at random.

None of these sources publishes a controlled accuracy comparison for video-game music. Treat every automated result as a candidate, not proof. A track may be absent from a recognition database, hidden in a release under a different title, or changed between editions and regions.
Use Shazam when the music can still be played
Apple Support documents Shazam identification on iPhone, iPad, and Android, including audio playing inside another app. That makes it the normal first attempt for a game, gameplay recording, livestream replay, or cutscene. You do not need to move the audio to a separate phone if the platform’s in-app recognition route is available.

iPhone or iPad: identify from the game or video
- Open the game, video app, or recording and move to a section where the music is prominent.
- Start the music and leave enough uninterrupted audio for recognition. A chorus, loop, or distinctive instrumental passage is usually more useful than a moment covered by dialogue or effects.
- Open Shazam and tap its recognition control, or use the iPhone/iPad Control Center music-recognition control documented by Apple.
- Return to the playing audio if necessary and let recognition run until a result appears.
- Open the result in Shazam and save it in the app. Apple says recognized songs are saved there for later review.
You can also ask Siri a question such as “What song is this?” when the music is audible. Auto Shazam is useful when a scene contains several cues: start automatic recognition before playing the sequence, then review the songs it collects afterward. Control Center and Siri are convenience routes to the same recognition task; exact labels can change with iOS and iPadOS updates.
Android: use the route available on your phone
- Play the game or replay and position the audio at the clearest section.
- Open Shazam, or use one of Apple’s documented Android routes: Quick Settings, the Shazam notification, or Pop-up Shazam.
- If the music is in another app, leave that app playing while Shazam listens. Give it a clean passage rather than a menu click, spoken line, or explosion.
- Wait for the match, then save or share the candidate and write down the exact track and artist details shown.
Android manufacturers expose Quick Settings and notification controls differently. If Pop-up Shazam is not visible, open Shazam directly and retry; the absence of one shortcut does not mean recognition is unavailable.
Improve a Shazam attempt
- Replay a longer, cleaner section: Skip past dialogue, sound effects, crowd noise, and abrupt transitions.
- Use the original mix when possible: A game’s music-only audio or a clean soundtrack video is preferable to a compressed stream recorded through a television speaker.
- Try more than one section: A short intro may be too sparse, while the main loop has the recognizable material.
- Reduce competing sound: Pause voice chat, notifications, and nearby audio sources.
- Record only for your own retry: A replayable clip lets you test the same cue again, but a recording does not guarantee a match.
Apple states that Shazam does not record or store the audio it detects and that Apple has no access to audio captured on the device. That is Apple’s description of its service; it does not establish how a particular game, streaming app, or device handles its own audio.
Why Shazam may return nothing
Shazam’s catalog may not contain a bespoke in-game cue, an unreleased score, a regional replacement, or a track listed under a different release title. Recognition can also fail when the passage is too short, heavily mixed with effects, or substantially slowed, sped up, or rearranged. Retry with a clearer segment before concluding that the song is unidentified.

Use Google Search when you remember the melody
Google’s mobile song-search feature can compare a hummed, whistled, or sung melody with likely songs. Google described the feature in a product post dated October 15, 2020, explaining that its models turn a melody into a number-based sequence and compare it with song matches. The post’s language-availability details were historical, so current support can vary by device, account, language, and region.
Step-by-step hum search
- On a phone, open Google Search or the Google app.
- Choose the song-search option, usually represented by a music-note or microphone control.
- When prompted, hum, whistle, or sing the melody for approximately 10–15 seconds. Keep a steady tempo and repeat the most distinctive phrase rather than changing words or rhythm.
- Review the likely matches. Google presents candidates; it does not promise that the top result is the game track.
- Play each plausible candidate and compare the melody, instrumentation, and structure with what you remember.
You do not need perfect pitch or the original lyrics. A simple vocal outline can work because the system is comparing melodic shape, not a literal transcript. If your first attempt is vague, repeat the same phrase at a consistent tempo instead of adding remembered words that may be inaccurate.
Make a remembered melody more recognizable
- Hum the main hook or opening phrase, not a low background ostinato.
- Keep the phone microphone unobstructed and move away from fans, traffic, and other voices.
- Try the melody in the approximate key and tempo you remember, then try a slower or faster version if the first pass fails.
- Do not treat a result as proof that the song appeared in the game; popular melodies can produce plausible but unrelated matches.
Google’s public explanation does not provide a video-game-specific success rate. It also does not establish a universal minimum clip length beyond its recommendation to hum for about 10–15 seconds, so regard that interval as practical guidance rather than a guarantee.

SoundHound’s support material documents voice prompts such as “What song am I humming?” and “Start a hum search.” It is useful when the music is gone and you want a second melodic search, but its support documentation does not establish a recognition rate or complete coverage of game soundtracks.

Basic SoundHound procedure
- Open SoundHound on your phone.
- Start its hum-search function using the on-screen control or a documented voice prompt.
- Hum or sing the most memorable 10–15-second phrase with a steady rhythm.
- Review the candidates and compare them with the game scene you remember.
Use SoundHound as an independent attempt, not as a tie-breaker that automatically outranks Google or Shazam. If both melodic services suggest the same song, that increases confidence only after the candidate also fits the game’s scene and release information.
When you know the game, search its soundtrack and scene
A known game can be more valuable than a weak audio clip. Search the exact title with terms such as soundtrack, OST, music, composer, and the remembered level, location, character, boss, menu, or cutscene. Search alternate spellings and subtitles, especially for remasters and games with similarly named editions.
Build a useful scene description
- Where: title screen, save room, overworld, battle, race, credits, shop, or a specific named location.
- When: opening minutes, a boss phase, a transition, a victory screen, or post-credits sequence.
- What changed: whether the cue began after combat, during dialogue, or when entering a new area.
- Which edition: original release, remaster, port, regional version, expansion, or fan translation.
- What it sounded like: vocal language, instruments, approximate era, genre, and whether it looped.
Then compare track lists and credit pages rather than relying on a single fan playlist. A cue may be named for its location, numbered as a score track, or omitted from a commercial album even though it appears in the game.
Game-specific lookup tools
The SceneSong Google Play listing says the app can identify songs through a microphone, show songs associated with games, and link to music services and stores. The listing reports an update on July 11, 2026. Those are the developer’s stated features, not an independent audit of recognition accuracy or catalog completeness. The listing does not establish that every game, platform, region, or soundtrack release is represented.

Use a game lookup as a shortcut to candidates. Confirm the result against the game’s credits, an official soundtrack listing, or the exact scene before calling the identification final.

Recognition services are optimized to find recordings, while game music is often delivered as a loop, a stem, a short transition, or a modified arrangement. Verification prevents a plausible search result from becoming a confidently wrong answer.
Check the recording and composition
- Listen to the candidate from the beginning and compare its melody, tempo, instrumentation, and structure with the game audio.
- Check whether the candidate is the original composition, a licensed recording, a cover, a remix, or a later arrangement.
- Look for the track in an official soundtrack release or the composer and performer credits.
- Match the scene: menu themes, battle cues, and ending songs often have related names but are not interchangeable.
Account for versions and regions
Ports, remasters, regional releases, and licensed music substitutions can use different cues. A song in a gameplay video may belong to downloadable content or a later edition rather than the base game. Record the platform and version when asking others for help, and state uncertainty if the evidence only identifies a family of related tracks.

Distinguish licensed songs from score cues
A licensed song may have a clear artist and commercial release, while an original score cue may be credited only to a composer, studio, or soundtrack album. Some short ambient loops never receive a standalone release. In those cases, the most accurate answer may be the in-game cue name and composer credit, with a note that no separate release was found.
Troubleshoot a failed identification
Nothing recognizes the audio
- Replay a longer section with dialogue and effects minimized.
- Try Shazam from the original app instead of a speaker-recorded copy.
- Hum the melody into Google Search and SoundHound.
- Search the game title plus the scene, location, and “OST” or “credits.”
- Check whether the cue is exclusive to a trailer, menu, expansion, regional edition, or unreleased build.
The service identifies the wrong song
- Run recognition on a different section, preferably the main musical phrase.
- Compare the candidate against the exact scene rather than accepting a similar genre or melody.
- Check whether the game uses a cover, edit, or remix of the recognized recording.
- Look for a soundtrack or credit entry that names the game-specific arrangement.
You have only a vague memory
Write down every fixed detail before searching: platform, approximate year played, game mode, location, character, vocal presence, instruments, and whether the music looped. Search combinations of two or three details at a time. Avoid adding a guessed lyric as if it were certain; an incorrect lyric can lead every search away from the right cue.
You cannot replay the game
Use a legally obtained gameplay recording, trailer, or soundtrack sample if available, then run Shazam on that audio. If no recording exists, the game title and scene route is more dependable than trying to reconstruct a melody from memory. Ask for the platform and version when posting a description, because the same game name can hide substantial music changes.
What ShazamKit is—and is not—for this task
Apple’s ShazamKit is a developer framework, not a setup step for an ordinary player. Apple describes two uses: matching tracks against the Shazam catalog, or letting a developer create a custom catalog from prerecorded audio. A studio, rights holder, or app developer with a known collection could use a custom catalog for its own audio, but the framework does not show that a custom catalog exists for any particular game.
For a player trying to identify one song, use the consumer recognition and search methods above. Consider ShazamKit only when you are building a tool around a legally controlled game-music collection.
After identification: confirm the release and choose how to listen
Once the title and composer or artist are confirmed, check whether the music is available as an official soundtrack, a digital single, a physical release, or only in the game. Streaming availability can differ by country and edition. Apple’s ShazamKit material points to an Apple Music partner program, but a subscription is not required to identify a song; verify current availability and terms before treating any listening option as universal.
Save the exact spelling, performer, composer, album, game version, and scene. That record makes it easier to distinguish an original score from a licensed track and to find the correct release later.
