The reliable way to identify a 1970s car is to treat identification as a chain of evidence: record the VIN exactly, decode it with a reference for the specific manufacturer, model year, and market, then compare it with the certification label, body or cowl tag, documented hidden stamps, and surviving factory paperwork. Do not expect one plate—or the car’s badges and appearance—to prove every trim or option.
Start by photographing every identifier and comparing the VIN with the title or registration. A 1970s VIN may not have 17 characters, and NHTSA says its vPIC decoder is intended for model years 1981 and forward. Period manufacturer manuals and make-specific references are therefore more useful than a general modern decoder.

Why identifying a 1970s car takes more than a VIN lookup
Modern vehicle identification usually assumes a standardized 17-character VIN. That assumption fails for many 1970s cars. Before the 1980 VIN standard, manufacturers used their own lengths, positions, and code meanings. A character that identifies an engine in one make may identify a series, body style, or assembly plant in another.

Even a correct period VIN may not identify every marketing trim. In a September 20, 1979 interpretation, NHTSA Chief Counsel Frank Berndt explained that a manufacturer’s cosmetic sales-version suffix did not necessarily have to be decipherable from the VIN. The same interpretation defines a series as “a name which a manufacturer applies to a subdivision of ‘line,’ denoting price, size, or weight identification, and which is utilized by the manufacturer for marketing purposes.” In practice, the VIN, certification label, body tag, and paperwork answer different questions.
- VIN: Usually the strongest starting point for legal identity and core vehicle attributes, but its fields are make- and year-specific.
- Certification label: A manufacturer label that can carry body, paint, trim, axle, transmission, or ordering information, depending on the make and year.
- Body, cowl, trim, or fender tag: A separate production record that may show build date, interior, paint, body style, or body options.
- Paperwork and hidden stamps: Supporting evidence that can resolve conflicts when the visible identifiers disagree.
Because these records were created for different purposes, a mismatch is a reason to investigate—not permission to choose the code that produces the most valuable-sounding trim.
Use this identification workflow
1. Record the car and its market before decoding anything
Photograph each identifier in place, then transcribe it character by character. Record whether a mark is a stamped number, riveted plate, adhesive label, cast marking, or replacement tag. Include the location in your notes. A single misread character can send a manual decode to the wrong model or plant.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Write down the make badge, approximate model year, body style, country or sales market, assembly plant if known, and every visible tag location. Photograph the title or registration for your own records, but do not post owner names, addresses, or document numbers publicly.
2. Compare the VIN with the title or registration
Use the number on the car as the starting point, then compare it with the legal paperwork. ICCA’s vehicle-configuration guidance puts this comparison first, followed by checks of the trim or fender tag and any applicable hidden body numbers.
Do not assume that the most accessible plate is the VIN. A cowl or firewall tag can be a body-build record rather than the legal vehicle identifier. If the title and car disagree, preserve both readings and stop short of declaring the car misidentified until a make-specific authority explains the discrepancy.
3. Locate identifiers using an exact-vehicle manual
Locations changed by manufacturer, body platform, and year. The 1970 Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicle-identification manual places the official VIN on an aluminum tab at the driver-side instrument panel near the windshield, visible from outside. It describes a vehicle certification label on the rear face of the driver’s door.
That pattern is not universal. Full-size Chevrolet guidance describes plates on the front door jamb for earlier examples and a move to the driver-side dash beginning in 1968 on the cited models. Use those examples only for the documented Ford or Chevrolet applications; do not apply them to an unrelated make.

4. Decode the VIN with a make-, year-, and market-specific source
Find a period factory manual, technical bulletin, or carefully scoped marque reference that covers the exact model year and assembly market. Confirm whether the source covers mid-year changes and whether its code positions apply to your body platform.
The 1970 Ford manual illustrates the level of detail to look for. It explains fields for model year, assembly plant, body serial, engine, and consecutive unit number. It then treats the certification label separately, with codes for body style, paint, interior trim, axle, transmission, and district of ordering. Ford’s field positions and meanings belong to that Ford-family manual; they are not a template for Chevrolet, Chrysler, or another manufacturer.
5. Read the body, cowl, trim, or fender tag as a separate record
Manufacturers and owners use several names for these plates: body tag, cowl tag, trim tag, firewall tag, body plate, data plate, and number plate. Identify the name used by the documentation for your make and year, then transcribe every line before trying to interpret it.

For Chevrolet Novas, the cited model-family guide covers 1968–1979 examples and describes information such as build date, model year, series or style, assembly plant, interior trim, exterior paint, and selected Fisher Body options. It also warns that tag locations and code details change by year. Full-size Chevrolet references similarly distinguish VIN information from cowl-tag data about body build date, paint, interior, and body-related options.
A tag can be highly useful without being the VIN. It may identify how the body was ordered or built while omitting a sales package, drivetrain change, or later replacement component.
6. Test trim and engine claims against stronger evidence
Badges, stripe kits, upholstery, wheels, and engine swaps can make a car look like a particular package without proving how it left the factory. Marketing names and cosmetic sales versions were not always assigned a unique VIN code. Use the exact make and year’s code tables, then look for a factory build sheet, invoice, warranty material, manufacturer archive response, or documented hidden stamp where the source says one should exist.
The Nova reference gives a specific warning: its cowl tag may be wrong when determining the original engine, and the VIN takes precedence in a discrepancy. Treat that as a Nova-family rule, not a universal authentication formula. Other manufacturers may give different priority to a body tag, engine stamp, or build sheet.
7. Resolve conflicts without guessing
When two records disagree, write down exactly what each source says and what that source is designed to establish. Then consult documentation for the same make, year, body platform, and market.

- Preserve clear photographs and the exact transcriptions of the VIN, certification label, body tag, and paperwork.
- Check whether a mid-year change, assembly plant, export market, or Canadian production run applies.
- Compare the VIN with the title or registration and note any character mismatch.
- Compare body or trim codes with the make-specific code table, including known exceptions and incomplete interpretations.
- Check documented hidden-number locations only when the reference identifies them for that platform.
- Seek period paperwork or a marque-specific authority before assigning a rare trim, original engine, or special option.
A responsible identification can conclude that the make, year, and body style are established while a particular trim or original engine remains unproven. That is more accurate than forcing every code into a single story.
What each identifier can and cannot establish
| Record | What it may establish | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| VIN | Core identity fields such as model year, line or series, body type, engine type, plant, or serial information, according to the manufacturer and year | Pre-1980 formats vary, and a cosmetic sales-version suffix may not be decipherable from the VIN |
| Vehicle certification label | Depending on manufacturer and year, body style, paint, interior trim, axle, transmission, and ordering district | It is a separate label; its code system cannot be transferred to another make |
| Body, cowl, trim, or fender tag | Build date, body style, plant, paint, interior, and selected body options in documented applications | It is not automatically the legal VIN and may contain incomplete or model-specific information |
| Title or registration | The legal identifier recorded for the vehicle | Paperwork can contain transcription or administrative errors and must be compared with the car |
| Hidden body numbers | Additional evidence of configuration on platforms where their locations and meanings are documented | They are not universal; do not invent a location or meaning for an undocumented body style |
| Factory paperwork | Ordered equipment, production details, or warranty-era information when it survives | Survival is not guaranteed for every car, year, or market |
How to choose a trustworthy decoding guide
Before entering a number into any decoder or buying a reference, check its scope. A guide that covers “classic cars” broadly may omit the exact year change that matters to your vehicle.
- Exact make and model-year coverage: Confirm the year, body platform, and any mid-year revision.
- Geographic coverage: Verify whether the guide covers U.S. production, Canadian production, export cars, or a particular assembly plant.
- Attributes decoded: Check whether it covers line or series, body style, engine, trim, paint, options, and plant—or only a subset.
- Authority: Prefer a period manufacturer manual or official record for the fields it documents; use enthusiast references for scoped interpretations and cross-checks.
- Exceptions: Read warnings about incomplete code tables, plant variations, reproduced tags, and uncertain interpretations before drawing a conclusion.
For a 1970 Ford-family car, the vehicle-identification section of the 1970 Ford Car Shop Manual, Form 7098-70-1, is an example of a period source tied to a specific manufacturer and year. It explains the VIN and certification-label fields for 1970 Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles; it is not a universal 1970s decoder.

Make- and year-specific examples
1970 Ford, Lincoln, or Mercury
Begin with the aluminum VIN tab at the driver-side instrument panel near the windshield, then check the certification label on the rear face of the driver’s door as described by the 1970 manual. Decode the VIN’s model-year, assembly-plant, body-serial, engine, and consecutive-unit fields using that manual.
Next, read the certification-label codes for body style, paint, interior trim, axle, transmission, and district of ordering. Keep the VIN decode and label decode in separate notes. If a later drivetrain or interior has been installed, the label may describe the original order while the present components describe the car’s current condition.
Full-size Chevrolet
Use a reference that covers the exact Chevrolet year and body line. The documented placement pattern for cited full-size models moved from the front door jamb to the driver-side dash beginning in 1968. The same references describe a separate cowl tag that can carry body date, body style, plant, paint, and interior information.
Do not transfer a Chevrolet cowl-tag layout to another Chevrolet line without checking the year and body platform. A full-size reference may not apply to a Nova, Chevelle, truck, or Canadian-built vehicle.
Chevrolet Nova, 1968–1979
The Nova-specific guide describes tags containing build date, model year, series or style, assembly plant, interior trim, exterior paint, and some Fisher Body options. It cautions that some tag codes are not fully deciphered and that Canadian Oshawa cars may differ.

- Premium Material: Crafted from premium EVA material, our car seat side gap filler boasts a combination of wear-resistant, softness&durability. Maintenance is effortless, simply rinse and wipe to quickly clean the dust and debris in corners and crevices
Most importantly, the guide warns that a cowl tag may be incorrect for determining the original engine and says the VIN takes precedence in a discrepancy. Apply that priority within the documented Nova context, then seek additional paperwork if the engine claim affects authenticity or value.
Keeping an identification record that others can audit
A clear worksheet prevents a plausible interpretation from becoming an undocumented assertion. Create one row for each identifier and include the source used to interpret it.
| Field to record | Example of a useful entry |
|---|---|
| Identifier location | Driver-side dash, visible through windshield; rear face of driver’s door; cowl or firewall |
| Exact characters | Transcribe letters and digits in order, preserving uncertain characters in a separate note |
| Physical format | Stamped metal, riveted plate, adhesive label, or casting |
| Document compared | Title or registration, factory manual, body-tag guide, build sheet, or archive response |
| Decoded field | Year, plant, body style, engine, paint, interior, axle, transmission, or ordering district |
| Confidence and conflict | State what agrees, what differs, and which source has priority for that specific make and year |
Photograph before cleaning or repainting a tag. If a plate is dirty, use gentle methods that do not remove ink, stamped edges, or original fasteners. Record the condition because a reproduction or replaced plate changes how much weight the identifier deserves.

Common mistakes and the safer alternative
- Using a modern 17-character decoder: Start with a pre-1980 reference for the exact make and year instead.
- Calling the cowl tag the VIN: Label each record by its actual function and compare it with the legal VIN.
- Assuming a badge proves a rare trim: Require year-specific codes or surviving factory documentation.
- Assuming a body tag proves the original engine: Follow the model-family guidance; for the cited Nova application, the VIN takes precedence over a conflicting cowl-tag engine claim.
- Copying code positions from another make: Verify manufacturer, year, body platform, and market before decoding each character.
- Ignoring Canadian or export differences: Check the assembly plant and market; the Nova guidance specifically cautions that Canadian Oshawa cars may differ.
- Choosing the interpretation that sounds most valuable: Report unresolved conflicts and identify what evidence would be needed to settle them.
When a definitive trim identification is not possible
Some cars simply lack enough surviving evidence. A VIN may establish the line and body style but not a cosmetic sales version. A tag may identify paint and interior yet contain an uncertain option code. A title may carry a clerical error. A build sheet may never have survived.
In that situation, separate established facts from informed possibilities. For example, you can state that the VIN identifies a particular model year and body series, the certification label records a specific paint and transmission code, and the advertised trim remains unconfirmed. This wording protects buyers, sellers, restorers, and historians from turning an attractive theory into a false provenance claim.
Frequently asked questions
What should I do if the VIN plate is missing?
Do not substitute a body or cowl tag and call it the VIN. Compare the title with any documented secondary identifiers, inspect only hidden-number locations documented for the platform, and obtain make-specific professional or archival guidance before altering or replacing an identification plate.
Can a replacement body tag be identified?
Sometimes. Photograph the fasteners, lettering, material, and surrounding body marks, then compare them with period examples for the exact plant and year. A reproduction warning or inconsistent format lowers the tag’s evidentiary weight, even when its codes appear plausible.

Does a matching paint and interior code prove the advertised trim?
No. Matching colors can support a configuration, but a trim package may have been a marketing or cosmetic sales version that was not uniquely encoded in the VIN. Look for the exact series, option, and factory-order evidence for that model year.
Should I decode the current engine or the engine listed in the records?
Record both. The installed engine describes the car now; the VIN, body tag, and factory paperwork may describe what was originally ordered. Which record controls an original-engine claim depends on the make and year’s documentation; the cited Nova guidance gives priority to the VIN when its cowl tag conflicts.
How should I describe an unresolved identification in a sale listing?
State the confirmed fields, quote the identifier exactly, name the source used, and identify the unresolved point. “VIN establishes the model year and body series; trim package not documented” is more defensible than presenting an unverified badge or tag interpretation as factory proof.
