The reliable way to host The Pioneers is to download the server pack for one exact release, run the Forge version named by that pack, and give the server at least 8 GB of RAM. Do not upload the ordinary client profile: the author says it will not load correctly on a server. Every player must use the same Minecraft version, Forge loader and modpack release.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
The current CurseForge listing identifies The Pioneers 8.2 for Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge, released April 8, 2026. The project is an extra-large adventure and exploration pack with magic and technology, so installation, memory use and update discipline matter more than they do for a small mod collection.

Release details and published requirements
Start by deciding exactly which release your group will run. At the time of writing, the current listed release is The Pioneers 8.2 for Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge. A later release may change the Minecraft version, Forge build, files or configuration, so do not mix instructions or downloads from different releases.
| Item | Published information | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Current listed release | The Pioneers 8.2 | Use this only if it is the release you selected from the CurseForge Files page. |
| Minecraft and loader | Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge | Install the Forge version named in the matching server-pack release. |
| Memory guidance | 8 GB or more dedicated RAM | Use it as the starting allocation, then watch actual usage and server responsiveness. |
| Release date | April 8, 2026 | This date identifies the 8.2 listing; it is not a guarantee that every later file is compatible. |
| Project downloads | 217,840 on the CurseForge listing accessed October 15, 2026 | This is a listing count, not a player-capacity or performance measurement. |
The author, BBoldt, describes the pack as large and writes: “I recommend dedicating 8GB or more of RAM, there are a lot of mods.” No independent benchmark, supported player-capacity test, or complete CPU, storage and Java requirement matrix is published with the cited material. Treat those as variables to measure on your own host rather than promises about a particular number of players.

Choose self-hosting or a managed server
Self-hosting from your own PC
Self-hosting gives you direct access to the world, configuration, logs, backups and mod files. It is suitable when the computer can stay online, your upload connection is dependable, and you are comfortable configuring a firewall and router. The trade-off is that your home network becomes part of the connection path, and you are responsible for recovery when the machine, connection or power fails.
Managed hosting
A managed service removes most router and operating-system work. CurseForge documents a hosted workflow in which you select a supported modpack and matching server pack, choose a plan and region, pay through Tebex, and wait for provisioning by Shockbyte. The owner can then share a link or import code so friends receive the modpack and connection details in CurseForge.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe Pioneers project description also names Bisect Hosting as a setup option, and BoxToPlay advertises one-click installation. Prices, availability, supported release, hardware allocation, backups and uptime change over time; verify those details on the provider’s current page before paying. A provider’s one-click label does not remove the need to verify that it deployed the same The Pioneers release and Forge loader as the clients.

Decision guide
| Question | Self-hosted PC | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Setup effort | Download, install, configure the OS firewall and usually the router. | Choose a supported pack, plan and region; the provider provisions the instance. |
| Recurring cost | Usually limited to electricity and your existing internet service; no universal total can be stated. | Monthly or other recurring plan charges; current pricing must be checked with the provider. |
| File and backup control | Full control of world, configuration, logs and backup location. | Depends on the provider’s panel, retention policy and export tools. |
| Home-network exposure | Requires an inbound path through your firewall/router or a private network solution. | Players connect to the provider’s network instead of your home address. |
| Latency | Depends on your home upload path and each player’s distance from it. | Choose a region near most players, subject to the provider’s available locations. |
| Technical support | You diagnose Forge, mods, Java, operating-system and network issues. | The provider can help with its panel and infrastructure; modpack errors still require matching files and logs. |
| Sharing the exact profile | You must give players the release and connection details yourself. | The documented CurseForge flow can provide a share link or import code. |
Install the correct server pack
- Open the release files. In CurseForge, go to The Pioneers project and open the Files page. Select the exact release your group will use. For the current listing, that is 8.2 on Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge.
- Open Additional Files. Download the server-pack archive attached to that release. CurseForge’s Java multiplayer guidance recommends the author’s server pack when a modpack supplies one.
- Create a dedicated directory. Make a new folder used only for this server. A separate folder prevents an old world, configuration or unrelated mod from being silently reused.
- Extract the archive in place. The project description says the server pack contains the
MODS,CONFIGandKUBEJSfolders. After extraction, those folders should be present in the server’s working directory, alongside the supplied launch files. - Do not substitute the client profile. The author explicitly warns that normal pack files will not load on a server. A client installation may contain launcher metadata or files that are not intended for a dedicated server, while the server archive is assembled for this purpose.
If the download contains an extra top-level folder, check where the launch script and the three server-pack folders ended up before starting. The script must run from the directory that contains the extracted server files; otherwise relative paths can point to an empty location and produce misleading missing-file errors.
Install and run the matching Forge loader
- Read the server-pack release notes or included instructions. Use the Forge version named for that release, not merely any Forge build that supports Minecraft 1.20.1. Forge and mod versions are a compatibility set.
- Install or invoke that Forge version in the server directory. Follow the installer or launch method supplied with the archive. Keep the loader associated with this server rather than sharing a different installation from another modpack.
- Run the supplied start file. The CurseForge setup guidance says to launch the server pack’s start file after extraction. Use the file provided by the pack instead of inventing a command with different memory or classpath arguments.
- Accept the EULA when prompted. On the first run, the server may stop after creating an EULA file. Read the agreement, set the EULA value as required by that file, then start the server again if the script requires a restart.
- Wait for a completed startup. A usable server should finish loading Forge and the mod list and then remain running for connections. The first launch can create configuration files and a world, so allow it to finish before closing the process.
A startup window that closes immediately is not evidence that the pack is unsupported. First verify the archive, Minecraft version and Forge build, then inspect the generated log in the server directory. A clean, matching installation is the fastest way to distinguish a bad download from a later configuration problem.
Set memory and basic server configuration
Memory allocation
Begin at the author’s recommendation of 8 GB or more dedicated to the server process. The host must have additional physical memory for the operating system and other services; allocating all installed memory can cause swapping or make the host unstable. Increase or decrease the allocation only after observing startup, world loading, garbage-collection pauses and actual resident memory use.

- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world full of surprises.
- SURVIVAL ADVENTURES — Face mysterious foes, travel across varied landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play solo or join friends in local split-screen and cross-platform play across console, mobile, and PC. Online multiplayer supports up to 8 players.

There is no published player-count benchmark for The Pioneers. A world with several players exploring different regions can create a different load from a quiet base-building session, so a number that works for one group is not an official limit for another. Record when lag occurs, how many players are online, and whether the delay is during chunk generation, entity activity or general server ticks before changing settings.
Protect the first world
- Keep the world,
MODS,CONFIGandKUBEJSfolders inside the dedicated server directory. - Before changing a modpack release or configuration, stop the server cleanly and copy the world and configuration to a separate backup location.
- Use a whitelist if the server is intended for friends only. Share the address privately rather than publishing it.
- Do not delete a configuration or mod simply because a warning appears during startup. Check whether the file belongs to the selected release and preserve a backup before experimenting.
Make a home server reachable
- Test locally first. Connect from the host computer or the same local network after the server reports that it is ready. This separates a Forge/mod problem from an internet-routing problem.
- Allow the server through the host firewall. Create an inbound rule for the port and program used by the server. The cited pack sources do not specify a universal port, so use the port shown in your server configuration rather than assuming a value.
- Configure the router if required. Forward that same port to the host computer’s local address. Reserve the computer’s local address in the router or operating system so the forwarding rule does not break after a reboot.
- Give friends the correct address. Players outside your home network need the reachable address and port exposed by your setup, not the host’s private LAN address. Keep the address private and change the arrangement if your internet provider blocks inbound connections.
- Consider a private network solution. A VPN or other private-network service can avoid direct port forwarding when every player supports the same solution. It still requires matching client files and a reachable host inside that private network.
There is no single networking recipe that fits every router, ISP or operating system. The Pioneers sources establish the pack and loader requirements, not a universal port number or network design. If local connections work but outside players cannot join, check firewall and router rules before reinstalling mods.
Prepare every player’s client
Each player should install the same Minecraft version, Forge loader and The Pioneers release as the server. For the current release, that means Minecraft 1.20.1, the matching Forge build named by the 8.2 server pack, and The Pioneers 8.2 files. A player using a newer pack, an older Forge build or a manually added mod can fail during the handshake even when the server itself is healthy.

- Skins! We have biome settlers, city folk, town folk, and more!
- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
- Have players select the same release in their launcher or CurseForge profile.
- Ask them to close the game completely after changing the profile so the launcher does not retain an old loader process.
- Give them the server address only after the server has completed startup.
- If a connection fails, compare the exact release and Forge version before changing network settings.
For a managed CurseForge deployment, the documented share link or import code can distribute the intended modpack profile and connection information. For a self-hosted server, write the release, Minecraft version, Forge version and address in one message so nobody has to infer which files to install.
Updating without breaking the world
- Announce a maintenance window and stop the server normally.
- Back up the world and the entire server configuration before replacing anything.
- Download the server pack for the new, specific release rather than copying only a few changed mods.
- Read that release’s Forge requirement and install the matching loader.
- Apply the update in a separate test directory when possible. Start it with a copy of the world and confirm that the server reaches a completed startup.
- Only then schedule the production switch. Keep the old directory until all players have connected successfully.
Never assume that a client update alone updates the server. The server pack is the authoritative package for the dedicated instance, and every client must be moved to the same release before the change is usable.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The server stops immediately
Confirm that you extracted the server-pack archive, not the ordinary client download. Then check that the Minecraft version and Forge version are the pair named for that release. Run the supplied start file from the directory containing the extracted files and inspect the log created by that attempt. A mismatched loader or a script launched from the wrong folder is more likely than a need to add random mods.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Mods are missing or startup reports missing classes
Look for the MODS, CONFIG and KUBEJS folders in the server’s working directory. If they are nested one level too deep, move the server contents so the launch file and those folders are together. Do not fill gaps by copying files from a different pack version; obtain the matching server archive instead.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The host runs out of memory or becomes unresponsive
Check the server process’s actual memory use and the host’s remaining memory while the world is loading and while players explore. Move toward the author’s recommended allocation if the server was given less, but leave headroom for the operating system. If the host still swaps or freezes, reduce concurrent activity, move the instance to a machine with more physical memory, or choose managed hardware with a documented allocation. No published benchmark identifies a guaranteed player count.
Friends cannot connect, but local testing works
First compare each client’s release and Forge loader with the server. If those match, check the host firewall, router forwarding and the address shared with outside players. A private LAN address works only inside the same network. If your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound traffic, a supported private-network solution or managed host may be necessary.
A managed deployment is the wrong version
Open the provider panel and verify the displayed Minecraft version, Forge build and The Pioneers server-pack release. If the panel deployed a different file, stop before creating a permanent world and ask provider support to correct the installation. In the CurseForge hosted flow, Shockbyte is identified as the provisioning and support provider, so its support channel is the appropriate escalation point for infrastructure or provisioning errors.
What is and is not established about performance
The project description establishes that the pack is large and recommends at least 8 GB of RAM. It does not establish a universal CPU model, storage type, Java version matrix, maximum player count, tick-rate target or network bandwidth requirement. Those values depend on the exact Forge build, operating system, world age, exploration pattern and number of simultaneous players.
