How to Host The Last War TaCZ Guns Minecraft Server (Forge 1.20.1)

The reliable way to host The Last War TaCZ Guns is to install its CurseForge server pack for Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 on Forge, run it once to create the server files, accept the EULA, and install the identical modpack release on every player’s client. Keep Minecraft, Forge, the server pack, and every TaCZ-related add-on on the same release. For memory, treat 10 GB RAM as the conservative starting point: the Modrinth project lists 7 GB as a minimum, while the current CurseForge description recommends at least 10 GB and more for larger player counts.

What The Last War server actually requires

Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 and Forge

The Last War is built for Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 using the Forge mod loader. A vanilla server, a different Minecraft version, or a Fabric installation is not an equivalent setup. The server and every client must agree on the Minecraft version, Forge release, and The Last War modpack release.

The current CurseForge release identified for this pack is The Last War – MC 1.20.1 – 57.2.0, uploaded September 6, 2026. That release also identifies updated TaCZ-related components. Select the release you intend to run before downloading anything else; mixing files from different releases is a common cause of connection errors and startup crashes.

The server-pack archive

Use the project’s CurseForge server-pack archive rather than copying a client profile and hoping it will behave as a dedicated server. A server pack contains the server-side files and the structure expected by the pack author. Modrinth’s project information notes that it cannot include every content or optimization mod and cannot upload server packs, so a CurseForge installation is the safer choice when you need the complete dedicated-server distribution or when quests and content are missing.

Memory and a realistic machine

The project pages give two different memory figures:

Source and condition Memory figure How to use it
Modrinth project page, current at the time of publication 7 GB minimum Below this, loading or FPS problems are more likely.
CurseForge project description, current at the time of publication 10 GB minimum Use this as the conservative starting allocation, then increase it for larger player counts or heavier worlds.

These are allocation recommendations, not a promise that a fixed number of players will perform well. Leave operating-system memory and headroom for Java, backups, and other services. Observe actual use after several players explore different areas; do not assign every gigabyte in the machine to the Java process.

Self-hosting or managed hosting?

Both approaches can run the same Forge 1.20.1 pack. The difference is who owns the network, operating-system, backup, and troubleshooting work.

Decision factor Self-hosted on your PC or a private server Managed Minecraft host
Upfront cost No separate hosting bill if you already own suitable hardware; electricity and hardware wear still apply. Recurring provider charge; the exact price depends on the provider and selected resources.
Setup time You install Java and Forge, extract the pack, configure files, and test the network. A control panel can install a supported modpack, but you still select the correct release and configure the game.
Router access Required when people outside your home must connect; you forward the configured TCP port. Normally handled by the provider, so no home-router port-forwarding is needed.
RAM controls You control the Java allocation and can upgrade the machine. You choose a plan or resource limit; confirm that it can provide at least the pack’s conservative 10 GB starting point.
Backups You must create, test, and store backups yourself. Tools may be included, but verify retention, restore access, and whether backups cover the entire world and configuration.
Modpack import Direct control over the CurseForge server pack and files. Look for documented Forge modpack installation and the ability to pin the required release.
Troubleshooting You diagnose Java, Forge, operating-system, storage, and network problems. The provider handles infrastructure; you remain responsible for mod compatibility and pack configuration.

Choose self-hosting when you have a machine that can remain online, can safely expose a game port, and are comfortable maintaining Java and backups. Choose managed hosting when router access, uptime of your home connection, or operating-system maintenance is the main obstacle. Do not buy a plan until the provider confirms support for this Forge 1.20.1 pack and enough RAM.

How to self-host The Last War step by step

1. Create an isolated server directory

  1. Create a new directory used only for this server, such as a folder named for the pack and release. Keeping it separate prevents an older world or unrelated modpack from being loaded accidentally.
  2. Download the matching CurseForge server-pack archive for Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge. Record the release name, especially if you are using 57.2.0, so clients can install exactly the same build.
  3. Extract the complete archive into the new directory. Do not run files while they are still inside the compressed archive, and do not omit configuration, libraries, scripts, or nested folders.

2. Install the Java runtime required by the pack

Install a supported Java runtime for the Forge installer and this pack. The project material does not specify one universal Java build, and host panels can provide different runtime choices, so use the runtime required by the Forge installer or the server-pack documentation you downloaded. Confirm which executable your operating system will use before the first launch.

On a command-line server, a generic launch pattern is:

java -Xms4G -Xmx10G -jar forge-server.jar nogui

The file name in that example is illustrative; use the Forge launcher generated by your installer or the start script included in the extracted pack. The memory flags are also starting values, not a universal performance guarantee. Set the maximum near the conservative 10 GB recommendation only when the machine has additional memory for the operating system and other services.

3. Run Forge once, then accept the EULA

  1. Start the Forge server launcher or the supplied start script from the server directory.
  2. Allow the process to stop after it creates the initial files. This first run may generate libraries, configuration folders, and the EULA file.
  3. Open eula.txt and change the agreement line to eula=true only after reading and accepting Mojang’s EULA.
  4. Start the same launcher again and watch the console for a completed server startup rather than closing it as soon as the world begins generating.

Do not move to client testing until the server can start twice from the same directory. If it stops before creating the expected files, check the Java runtime, the extracted archive, and the Forge launcher selected in your start script.

4. Configure the world and access policy

Stop the server cleanly before editing configuration. Open server.properties and set the options appropriate for your group. For a private server, enable a whitelist and add each player’s exact Minecraft account name. Use a strong operator policy: give operator privileges only to people who need them, and never publish the operator account or server console to an untrusted person.

Keep the configured TCP port consistent with the value in the server properties and the value opened on your firewall. If friends connect from outside your home, forward that port from the router to the host machine’s local address. Reserve the host machine’s local address in the router when possible so the forwarding rule does not break after a reboot. A managed host normally removes this home-router step.

5. Start a clean test world

  1. Start the server and wait for the normal ready message in the console.
  2. Connect from a client on the same release. Test joining, movement, inventory, weapons, quests, and a short exploration trip.
  3. Stop the server with its normal stop command. Do not terminate the process or power off the machine while the world is saving.
  4. Copy the world directory and the relevant configuration files to a separate backup location.

Testing on a disposable world first limits the damage if a mod mismatch or configuration mistake appears. Once the basic test succeeds, create the real world and make a fresh backup before inviting players.

6. Install the identical pack on every client

Each player should install the same The Last War release through CurseForge or another distribution path supported by the project. Match all of these values exactly:

  • The same The Last War modpack release, including 57.2.0 if that is the release you selected.
  • The same TaCZ version and any add-on mods shipped with or required by that release.

Do not let one player add an unapproved client or server mod merely because it works in single-player. A client-only visual change can still be harmless, but content, gameplay, and loader changes must be agreed and tested for both sides. When in doubt, compare the installed file lists with a known-good client.

7. Test the backup and restore process

A backup is useful only if you can restore it. Stop the server, copy the complete world and configuration data, and record which pack release produced the backup. On a test copy, replace the world with the backup and start the server using the same release. Verify that players, inventories, quests, and discovered areas are present. Keep at least one backup from before every modpack or Forge update.

Using a managed host

Importing the pack through a control panel

Mado Hosting documents a straightforward flow: open its modpack browser, search for The Last War – Guns And Adventure, and click Install. The label shown by a provider can differ from the project title, so confirm that the result is the same The Last War pack for Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge before installing.

After installation, check the panel’s selected Minecraft version, Forge loader, Java runtime, memory limit, and server-pack release. A one-click installer does not remove the need to align clients; every player still needs the same release and loader.

Adding extra mods safely

Mado Hosting’s instructions state that added mods must match the same Forge loader and Minecraft 1.20.1 version. Apply that rule to any host: make a backup, add one change at a time, start the server, and test a client before adding another. Never replace a pack’s TaCZ component with a random newer file without checking the release changelog and testing a copy of the world.

Questions to ask before paying

  • Can the plan allocate at least 10 GB of RAM to the Java process, with headroom for the host panel and backups?
  • Can you select and pin the exact Forge 1.20.1 release required by The Last War?
  • Does the panel import the complete CurseForge server pack rather than only a client manifest?
  • Are scheduled backups included, and can you download and restore them yourself?
  • Can you upload a server pack manually if the one-click catalog changes?
  • What is the process for reading crash logs and changing Java versions?

The project author says the pack works with a recommended provider but also warns that a self-hosted setup or an unlisted host may not work. Treat that as the author’s opinion, not a guarantee: verify current compatibility, resource limits, and refund terms directly with any provider before purchase.

Keeping versions synchronized during updates

Before an update

  1. Read the CurseForge changelog for the target release. Mods may be added, removed, or updated between releases.
  2. Write down the current Minecraft, Forge, The Last War, and TaCZ-related versions.
  3. Stop the server cleanly and make a complete world and configuration backup.
  4. Install the new release in a separate test directory or on a copied world.

Test, then migrate

Start the copied world with the new files and test joining, quests, weapons, inventories, and exploration. If the test fails, restore the old environment rather than repeatedly launching the live world with mismatched files. Once the test succeeds, schedule a maintenance window, announce the new client pack to players, and keep the old backup untouched.

Why the Minecraft version should remain 1.20.1

This pack line is identified for Minecraft 1.20.1. Moving to another Minecraft release changes the Forge environment and can invalidate mods, configurations, and world data. Unless a later project release explicitly changes the supported version, remain on 1.20.1 and update only through a compatible pack release.

Troubleshooting common failures

The server will not start

  • Confirm that Java is installed and that the launcher is using the supported runtime rather than a different system Java.
  • Verify that the server-pack archive was fully extracted and that the start script points to the generated Forge launcher.
  • Check that the Forge loader and Minecraft version are 1.20.1, not a leftover installation from another pack.
  • Read the first error in the console or crash report. Later errors are often consequences of the first missing file or incompatible mod.

Players receive a mod-list or connection mismatch

Compare the client and server Minecraft version, Forge loader, The Last War release, TaCZ version, and add-on files. “Almost the same” is not enough for content mods. Reinstalling the exact client profile from the selected release is usually safer than manually deleting individual files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Loading stalls or the process crashes

Move the allocation toward the conservative 10 GB recommendation if the machine has sufficient spare memory. Check whether the operating system is swapping, and reduce view distance and simulation distance before adding more memory. Remove unauthorized client/server-only additions and test again on a copied world. Increasing Java memory cannot repair a missing or incompatible mod.

Quests or content are missing

Prefer the CurseForge distribution when you need the complete server pack. Modrinth notes that it cannot include every content or optimization mod or upload server packs, and that FTB Quests may require separate handling. Confirm that the quest-related files shipped with the selected release are present on the server and clients before rebuilding a world.

The world appears damaged after an update

Stop launching the changed installation and restore the pre-update backup. Repeatedly opening a world with a mismatched mod set can write additional changes and make recovery harder. Test the target release on a copy, identify the incompatible file, and migrate only after the test world remains stable.

Friends cannot connect from outside the home

  • Confirm that the server is running and listening on the configured TCP port.
  • Check the host machine’s firewall and allow the Java server process or configured port.
  • Verify that the router forwards the same port to the host machine’s current local address.
  • Use a reserved local address so a reboot does not send traffic to another device.
  • If the home connection uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound connections, use a managed host or another network arrangement instead of repeatedly changing server files.

Performance settings worth tuning

Begin with the pack’s recommended memory and a small test group. Watch memory use, tick behavior, and CPU load while players travel in different directions. If the server remains responsive, increase player count gradually. If it struggles, lower view distance and simulation distance, limit unnecessary chunk exploration, and schedule restarts only when they address a demonstrated issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the server process on fast local storage with free space for world growth, logs, and backups. Avoid running large downloads, video encoding, or other heavy workloads on the same self-hosted machine during play. A managed host should provide equivalent resource information; do not assume a plan’s advertised storage is the same as Java heap memory.

Security and maintenance checklist

  • Enable a whitelist for a private group and remove former players promptly.
  • Give operator privileges only to trusted administrators.
  • Keep the server directory and backups separate from the public web root.
  • Do not publish console logs containing account names, addresses, or administrative commands.
  • Back up before every Forge, modpack, or add-on change.
  • Keep at least one backup offline or on another machine so a disk failure or ransomware event cannot destroy every copy.
  • Document the exact release, Java runtime, memory allocation, port, and restore steps for the person who will maintain the server.

Final launch checklist

  1. The server uses Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 and Forge.
  2. The complete CurseForge server pack is extracted into a clean directory.
  3. The supported Java runtime starts the generated Forge launcher.
  4. The EULA is accepted and the server starts cleanly twice.
  5. Memory is allocated conservatively, with 10 GB as the starting recommendation when the machine can spare it.
  6. server.properties, whitelist, firewall, and router forwarding are configured for your access model.
  7. Every client uses the identical Minecraft, Forge, The Last War, TaCZ, and add-on releases.
  8. A copied-world test has passed after the last update.
  9. A backup has been restored successfully before real players join.
