Docker hosting on a VPS means renting a Linux virtual machine, installing Docker Engine (or selecting an image that already includes it), and running your containers on a server you administer. You control the operating system, Docker settings, network exposure and application lifecycle without managing physical hardware.

The practical choice is between a clean VPS with a manual, distribution-specific installation and a provider image with Docker preinstalled. Both still require deliberate firewall, update, backup and secret-management decisions. The guide below shows a safe installation path, a first deployment and the operational checks that keep a VPS-hosted container service maintainable.

What Docker hosting on a VPS actually provides

A VPS is an isolated Linux server provided as a virtual machine. Docker Engine runs on that host and supplies the daemon, container runtime, image management, networking and volume interfaces. Your application runs in one or more containers while the VPS supplies the kernel, CPU, memory, disk and network connection.

This arrangement gives you server-level access: you can choose the Linux distribution and architecture, install system packages, create firewall rules, inspect logs and decide when Docker or an application is upgraded. It is different from a managed container platform, where the provider hides most host administration. The trade-off is that you also own patching, exposure control, backups, monitoring and recovery.

Choose how Docker gets onto the VPS

Route Initial effort Control Security and lifecycle work What to verify
Clean Linux VPS, manual install Follow the Docker guide for the exact distribution and CPU architecture; add the repository and packages yourself. You select the operating-system release, repository channel and surrounding system packages. You must configure the host, review published ports and maintain Docker and the operating system. Supported distribution and architecture, repository availability, update policy and your access to an administrative account.
Provider image with Docker preinstalled Shorter first boot because Docker is included in the image. The image determines the starting OS release and package set; you can still administer the running VPS. You still review firewall behavior, image maintenance, Docker updates and the provider’s support boundary. Image build date, OS lifecycle, included Compose version, regions, firewall defaults and how updates are delivered.

Some providers document ready-made images rather than a universal standard. Hetzner describes a Docker CE image based on Ubuntu 24.04 that includes the Compose plugin; its documentation was last changed on 2024-11-06 (Hetzner Docker CE documentation). DigitalOcean documents a Docker one-click Droplet (DigitalOcean Docker image documentation). These pages demonstrate the setup pattern, not a ranking, price comparison or reliability guarantee. Check the current image contents and lifecycle when you create a server.

Check the VPS before installing anything

  • Operating system and architecture: record the distribution release and whether the VM is x86-64, ARM64 or another supported architecture. Docker maintains a platform-specific installation matrix in its Install Docker Engine guide.
  • Administrative access: you need SSH access and an account that can use sudo. Rootless Docker uses a different user model, covered below.
  • Package and network access: the VM must reach the distribution mirrors and Docker’s package repository. Confirm that outbound HTTPS is allowed before troubleshooting an installation.
  • Cloud firewall state: identify security groups, provider firewalls and any network ACLs in addition to the firewall inside Linux.
  • Capacity and storage: size CPU, memory and disk for the images, containers, logs and application data you actually plan to run. The cited documentation does not establish a universal VPS size; measure your workload and leave headroom for updates and recovery copies.

Install Docker Engine on Ubuntu with the official repository

The following route follows Docker’s Ubuntu documentation. Package names and repository details can change, so use the guide matching the Ubuntu release on your VPS rather than copying instructions intended for another distribution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Refresh apt metadata and install prerequisites.
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install ca-certificates curl
  2. Install Docker’s signing key directory and key.
    sudo install -m 0755 -d /etc/apt/keyrings
    sudo curl -fsSL https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu/gpg -o /etc/apt/keyrings/docker.asc
    sudo chmod a+r /etc/apt/keyrings/docker.asc
  3. Add the stable Docker apt repository. The command below selects the machine architecture and Ubuntu codename from the host. In a shell, keep it as one command block.
    echo "deb [arch=$(dpkg --print-architecture) signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/docker.asc] https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu
    $(. /etc/os-release && echo "${UBUNTU_CODENAME:-$VERSION_CODENAME}") stable" |
    sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/docker.list > /dev/null
  4. Refresh metadata again and install the engine, runtime, build tools and Compose plugin.
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io docker-buildx-plugin docker-compose-plugin
  5. Check the service and run Docker’s verification image.
    sudo systemctl status docker
    sudo docker run hello-world

A successful hello-world run confirms that the client can contact the daemon, pull an image and create a container. Exit the status view with q if systemd opens a pager.

Docker also documents a convenience installation script. Its Ubuntu instructions recommend that script only for testing and development, not as the normal production installation path, because a repository-based install gives you clearer package and update control.

Other Linux distributions

Do not substitute Ubuntu package commands on Debian, Fedora, CentOS or another distribution. Open Docker’s general installation page, select the operating system and architecture shown by your VPS, and follow that platform’s repository and package steps. The stable and test release channels are described there; choose deliberately and document the channel so future upgrades are predictable.

Run a first container without exposing it accidentally

Use a disposable web container to verify name resolution, image pulls, port mapping and lifecycle commands. Binding the port to loopback keeps this test reachable only from the VPS itself:

sudo docker run -d --name vps-web -p 127.0.0.1:8080:80 nginx:alpine
curl http://127.0.0.1:8080
sudo docker ps
sudo docker logs vps-web
sudo docker stop vps-web
sudo docker rm vps-web

The -p option maps a host port to a container port. If you instead write -p 8080:80, Docker normally listens on the host’s network interfaces, making the service a candidate for Internet traffic subject to your provider’s network controls. Use an explicit bind address when a service should remain private, and publish only the ports you have intentionally protected and monitored.

Firewall behavior is the critical VPS gotcha

Docker’s Ubuntu documentation states: “If you use ufw or firewalld to manage firewall settings, be aware that when you expose container ports using Docker, these ports bypass your firewall rules.” This means a rule that appears to deny a port in ufw or firewalld may not control traffic after Docker has published that port.

Before deploying an Internet-facing container:

  • List every published port in your Compose files and deployment commands.
  • Review both the VPS firewall and the provider’s cloud firewall or security-group rules.
  • Bind administration interfaces to localhost or a private interface unless remote access is required.
  • Test from an external network and from the VPS itself; an open local connection does not prove that the public path is restricted.
  • Put HTTP services behind a deliberately configured TLS-capable reverse proxy or load balancer, and expose only the proxy’s intended ports.

Do not assume that a container’s internal network address is a security boundary. Treat every published port as an externally reachable service until testing proves otherwise.

Use Compose for a repeatable application definition

The Compose plugin installed with the Ubuntu package set lets you describe related services in a YAML file instead of retyping long docker run commands. This small example is for a test site; replace the image, configuration and storage choices for your application.

mkdir -p ~/vps-app
cd ~/vps-app
cat > compose.yaml <<'EOF'
services:
  web:
    image: nginx:alpine
    ports:
      - "127.0.0.1:8080:80"
    restart: unless-stopped
EOF
sudo docker compose up -d
sudo docker compose ps
sudo docker compose logs --follow

Press Ctrl-C to leave the log stream. docker compose down removes the containers and network defined by the file; it does not automatically erase named volumes, but you should still understand the data implications of every command before running it. Keep the Compose file in version control without committing passwords, tokens or private keys.

Rootless Docker: a lower-privilege option

Rootless mode runs the Docker daemon and containers as a non-root user. Docker presents it as a way to mitigate potential vulnerabilities in the daemon and container runtime, not as a guarantee that an application is secure. It is useful when you do not want ordinary container-management commands to require a root-owned daemon.

Docker’s rootless mode documentation lists host prerequisites:

  • newuidmap and newgidmap utilities must be installed.
  • The user needs at least 65,536 subordinate user IDs and 65,536 subordinate group IDs in the host’s subordinate-ID configuration.
  • The distribution, filesystem and networking setup must support the rootless requirements documented for that release.

Rootless operation changes how you manage the service, where configuration is stored and which low-numbered ports or kernel features are available. Follow the distribution-specific procedure in the linked documentation, then test image pulls, Compose operations, restarts and log access as the unprivileged user. Keep using the same firewall discipline: rootless mode does not make an intentionally published service private.

Operational work after the first successful container

A container that starts is only the beginning of hosting. Before calling the VPS deployment production-ready, make decisions for each item below and record them where another administrator can find them.

  • Persistent data: identify which directories or databases must survive container replacement. Use explicit bind mounts or named volumes and document ownership and permissions.
  • Backups and restore tests: copy application data and configuration to storage independent of the VPS, define retention, and perform a restore rehearsal. A snapshot that has never been restored is not a verified backup.
  • Updates: track the OS, Docker Engine, Compose plugin and every image tag. Plan maintenance windows, read release notes and keep a rollback image or configuration when an update can change behavior.
  • Secrets: keep credentials out of public Compose files, shell history and image layers. Use the secret mechanism supported by your deployment process and rotate credentials if they are exposed.
  • TLS and domain routing: decide where certificates terminate, how renewals happen and which internal services must never be directly published.
  • Monitoring and logs: watch disk usage, memory pressure, container restarts, certificate expiry and application health. Set log rotation so a noisy container cannot fill the VPS disk.
  • Recovery: write the rebuild sequence: provision a compatible VPS, install the documented Docker version, restore secrets and data, start Compose services and verify externally.

These are deployment responsibilities rather than features supplied automatically by Docker or a VPS image. A preinstalled image shortens the first boot; it does not perform these ongoing tasks for you.

Troubleshoot common VPS Docker failures

The Docker service is inactive

Check sudo systemctl status docker and then sudo journalctl -u docker for the first error after boot. Confirm that the package installation completed and that the VPS has not exhausted disk space. Do not repeatedly restart without reading the daemon error; a bad configuration or unsupported storage driver needs correction first.

The image pull fails

Verify outbound DNS and HTTPS from the VPS, apt or Docker registry connectivity, and the image name and tag. A provider firewall can allow inbound SSH while blocking outbound traffic, so test both directions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The container runs but the site is unreachable

Inspect sudo docker ps for the published port, check sudo docker logs <container-name>, and confirm that the application is listening on the container port you mapped. Then check the provider firewall and host rules. Remember that a loopback binding such as 127.0.0.1:8080:80 is intentionally inaccessible from another machine.

A port appears open despite a firewall rule

Review Docker’s published-port behavior rather than assuming ufw or firewalld controls it. Remove an unnecessary publication, bind it to a private interface, or enforce the intended policy at the cloud firewall and network design layers after testing from an external host.

Data disappears after recreating a container

Container writable layers are disposable. Check the Compose file for a persistent volume or bind mount, confirm that the application writes to that path, and restore from a tested backup if data was not persisted.

Which setup route fits your situation?

  • Choose a manual install when you need a specific distribution release, want to select every package and repository, or have an established configuration-management process.
  • Choose a Docker-ready image when reducing initial setup time matters and the image’s OS release, Compose plugin, maintenance date and support scope meet your requirements.
  • Choose rootless mode when your workload and networking needs fit its prerequisites and you want the daemon and containers to run under a non-root account.

In every case, write down the image or package source, Docker and OS versions, published ports, firewall layers, data locations and recovery steps. That documentation is what turns a one-time container launch into a VPS service you can operate with confidence.
