The quickest way to host Verdant Idea is a one-click modpack host: select Verdant Idea 0.9.3, start the server, install the identical pack version in the CurseForge launcher, and connect. Self-hosting is the control-oriented alternative: download the 0.9.3 server pack, run it on Java 17 with Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1, open the Minecraft port on your network or VPS, and give players your address.

Verdant Idea is a beta Forge pack inspired by Regrowth. It begins in an empty world, so world creation and backups matter more than they do for a conventional survival server. The current reference release is 0.9.3, uploaded July 12, 2026; its server archive is about 173.6 MB. Cached pages may still call 0.9.2 or 0.9 the latest, so verify the Files tab before installing.

What you need before creating the server

  • Verdant Idea 0.9.3: Use the same release on the server and every client. The pack is marked Beta, and the 0.9.3 server file is named Verdant-Idea-Server-0.9.3.zip.
  • Minecraft and loader: Verdant Idea targets Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge. Do not mix it with a Fabric installation or another Minecraft version.
  • Java: Use Java 17 for a 1.20.1 server. Java 21 is relevant to later Minecraft versions, not this pack.
  • Memory and storage: Treat 5,000 MB RAM and 15 GB SSD as a practical minimum published by one host. A provider offering a 16 GB modded-server plan is a more comfortable starting point for several players or a long-running world.
  • Administrative access: You need a hosting control panel, shell access to a VPS, or a computer that can stay online while people play.
  • Network access: Self-hosting from home requires an externally reachable Minecraft port and a stable local address for the server computer. A VPS or managed host normally supplies the public address.

Because the pack starts in an empty world, decide who is allowed to join before launch. An allowlist, regular backups, and a named world directory prevent a single mistake from becoming a permanent reset.

Choose between one-click hosting and self-hosting

Approach Setup effort Control Hardware and maintenance Best for
Managed one-click host Low; select the pack and version in a panel Panel settings, and sometimes SFTP or FTP Provider supplies the machine, storage, networking, and uptime Players who want to start quickly
Own computer High; install Java, configure Forge, networking, and backups Full access to files and operating system Your hardware, electricity, internet connection, and troubleshooting Small groups with a machine that can remain online
VPS Medium to high; similar software work without home port forwarding Root or administrator access, subject to the VPS plan You manage updates, firewall rules, storage, and backups Administrators who want a public server under their control

There is no reliable universal price in the available specifications: managed hosting is a recurring subscription, while self-hosting shifts the cost to hardware, power, and administration. Compare the amount of control you need rather than choosing solely by advertised player counts.

Set up a managed Verdant Idea server

Panels differ, but the workflow is consistent. Keep the server and launcher on 0.9.3 unless the CurseForge Files tab explicitly identifies a newer compatible release.

  1. Create the server: In the provider’s game or modpack catalog, search for Verdant Idea and choose version 0.9.3. Do not select an older entry merely because a cached page labels it “Latest release.”
  2. Let the panel build the instance: One-click services download and place the server files for you. Wait until the installation job reports completion before pressing Start.
  3. Start and watch the console: The first boot can take longer while Forge creates configuration and world directories. Stop the server from the panel if it reports a missing Java runtime, failed download, or incompatible version; correct that problem before allowing players to connect.
  4. Install the matching client: In the CurseForge launcher, install Verdant Idea 0.9.3 for Minecraft 1.20.1. Every player must use the same pack version and loader.
  5. Copy the address exactly: Use the hostname or IP and port displayed by the host. Add it in Minecraft’s Multiplayer screen, then connect after the console shows the server is ready.
  6. Secure administration: Set an administrator account or operator only for trusted people, enable an allowlist where the panel supports it, and record the panel’s backup and restart controls.

Provider-specific installation paths

Service Documented Verdant Idea workflow or requirement
Akliz Create a server with Verdant Idea in Command Center, start it, install the same version in CurseForge, and connect. Its instructions state that no file uploads or editing are required.
CreeperHost Published minimums are 5,000 MB RAM, a 2 × 4.5 GHz CPU, and 15 GB SSD. Its Premium tier is recommended for modded or long-running worlds; its panel can change mod configurations through a GUI and retain those changes through pack updates.
Game Host Bros Its guidance suggests beginning with a 16 GB RAM plan for modpack performance. Install through the control panel’s Modpacks section; SFTP is available for file management.
ScalaCube Use Servers → Select your server → Game servers → Add Game Server → Verdant Idea.
BoxToPlay Choose the Verdant Idea version and wait while the server is built with that selection.
ZAP-Hosting Setup is described as automatic and preconfigured after payment. Free FTP access is available for uploading an existing world.

The published numbers are vendor guidance, not a benchmark for every world. Start at or above the memory minimum, watch the server’s CPU and memory graphs while players explore, and resize if the console reports long ticks or the panel shows sustained swapping.

Self-host Verdant Idea on a computer or VPS

1. Download and stage the server pack

  1. Open the official CurseForge file listing and verify that 0.9.3 is still the newest file. Download Verdant-Idea-Server-0.9.3.zip.
  2. Create a dedicated directory such as verdant-idea-server on a drive with at least 15 GB free. Keeping the server separate from other Minecraft instances makes backups and updates safer.
  3. Extract the ZIP into that directory. Preserve the folder structure; do not move individual mods into a different directory.

The archive itself is approximately 173.6 MB, but the generated world, logs, Forge files, and backups will require substantially more space. Leave free capacity rather than filling the disk at first launch.

2. Install and verify Java 17

Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime on the host operating system. Confirm it from a terminal with:

java -version

The reported major version should be 17. If the system has several Java installations, configure the server’s launch script or service to use the Java 17 executable explicitly. A newer Java installation should not silently replace the runtime selected for this 1.20.1 Forge pack.

3. Run the included Forge server launcher

Server packs commonly include a launch script or a Forge server JAR. Use the script supplied in the extracted 0.9.3 directory when one is present; it preserves the pack’s expected arguments and file names. If you launch Forge manually, select the actual server JAR included by the pack and run it without a graphical interface, for example:

java -Xms4G -Xmx8G -jar <the-Forge-server-jar-in-the-pack> nogui

The memory values in this example are starting values, not a Verdant Idea requirement. Set them below the machine’s total RAM so the operating system and, on a shared VPS, other services have room. The first run may stop while creating files or requesting the Minecraft EULA; follow the generated instructions, then start it again.

4. Keep the server running

For a temporary test, run the launcher in a terminal and leave that session open. For an always-on server, use the operating system’s service manager or a terminal multiplexer so the process survives logout and can restart after a reboot. Capture the console log and configure automatic restarts only after you have confirmed that a clean stop saves the world.

5. Configure the network

  1. Allow the Java server process through the host firewall.
  2. On a home network, forward the Minecraft server port from the router to the computer running the server, and give that computer a reserved local address so the rule does not break after a reboot.
  3. Give players your public address and port, not the private address beginning with a local-network range.
  4. Test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot. A connection that works only from inside your home may be a local routing test rather than proof that friends can join.

A VPS avoids home-router forwarding, but you still need firewall rules and a stable public address. Never publish remote-administration credentials in a server chat or paste them into a public issue.

Match every client to the server

A client mismatch is the most common reason a correctly running modpack server rejects a player. Each player should install Verdant Idea 0.9.3 for Minecraft 1.20.1 through the CurseForge launcher and allow the launcher to use the pack’s Forge profile. A client on 0.9.2, an unmodified 0.9.3 profile, or a different Minecraft version can fail during the handshake even when the server itself is healthy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Compare the version shown in the launcher with the server’s installed file name.
  • Remove manually added mods before testing; extra or changed mods can alter the handshake.
  • Use the same Java family recommended by the launcher for the client, while keeping the server on Java 17.
  • Have one clean client connect first. Add optional client-only changes only after the base connection works.

Performance settings that matter first

Memory

Allocate at least 5 GB to a managed instance when the host’s minimum is 5,000 MB. A 16 GB plan gives more headroom for a modded, persistent world, but assigning all 16 GB to Java can starve the operating system. Leave several gigabytes for the OS, panel agents, backups, and file cache.

View and simulation distance

If ticks become slow as players spread out, reduce view distance and simulation distance in the server settings. Lower values reduce the number of chunks that must be loaded and simulated. Change one setting at a time, restart cleanly, and ask players whether the new render horizon is acceptable.

Watchdog behavior

General modded-server guidance often recommends disabling the maximum-tick-time watchdog because a heavily modded tick can exceed the watchdog threshold and trigger a shutdown. This is not a Verdant Idea-specific guarantee: disabling the watchdog can leave a genuinely hung process running. Make the change only when you can monitor the console and restart the service manually.

World generation

Verdant Idea’s empty starting world changes the early workload. Let the server finish its first startup and world creation before several players begin exploring at once. Keep the console visible during the first session and make a backup once the intended starting area exists.

Backups, updates, and rollback

Back up the right files

Stop the server before copying the world directory so region files are not changing during the backup. Include the world, server configuration, allowlist and operator files, and any host-specific settings that control the pack. Store at least one copy outside the server machine and label it with the date and pack version.

Update deliberately

  1. Check the CurseForge Files tab for a newer Verdant Idea release and read its notes.
  2. Stop the server and make a dated backup of the complete instance.
  3. Install the new server pack in a separate directory or use the host’s version selector only after confirming that it preserves the world.
  4. Update every client to the same release before inviting players back.
  5. Start the updated instance and inspect the console for missing mods, migration messages, or configuration errors.
  6. Keep the previous directory until players have loaded the world, verified inventories, and completed a normal save and restart.

If an update fails, stop the new instance, restore the backup to the previous pack version, and investigate from a copy. Do not repeatedly start and stop a damaged world while experimenting.

Troubleshoot the most common failures

Symptom Likely cause Action
“Incompatible version” or handshake failure Client and server are on different pack, Minecraft, or Forge versions Compare both launchers and reinstall the exact 0.9.3 profile on the client.
Server stops immediately Wrong Java major version, an incomplete extraction, or an unmet EULA prompt Check java -version, re-extract the server ZIP, read the first error in the console, and complete the generated setup step.
Friends cannot see the server Port forwarding, firewall, address, or ISP restrictions Test from another network, verify the public address and port, and check both the host firewall and router rule.
Long pauses or “can’t keep up” messages Insufficient CPU or memory, too many loaded chunks, or aggressive distances Lower view and simulation distance, stop background workloads, and move to a larger plan if resource graphs remain saturated.
World appears reset or progress is missing Wrong world directory, an update without a backup, or a failed save Stop the server, identify the intended world folder, and restore the most recent dated backup rather than overwriting it.
Configuration changes disappear after an update The host replaced edited files during pack installation Use the provider’s persistent configuration interface where available, export settings, and reapply them after verifying the new pack.

A practical launch checklist

  • Confirm the Files tab still identifies 0.9.3 as the release you intend to run.
  • Install Java 17 and verify the reported version.
  • Allocate at least 5 GB RAM; leave operating-system headroom.
  • Use the 0.9.3 server pack, not the client profile ZIP.
  • Start once, complete the generated EULA/setup step, and wait for a ready console.
  • Install the identical 0.9.3, Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge profile for every player.
  • Test a connection from outside the host’s local network.
  • Make a stopped-server backup before inviting the group.
  • Record the server address, restart procedure, backup location, and administrator names.

Which hosting route should you choose?

Choose one-click hosting when the priority is getting a playable Verdant Idea world online with minimal file work. It is also the safer choice when no one in the group wants to maintain Java, firewall rules, restarts, and backups. Choose a self-hosted computer when you already have a machine that can stay online and you value unrestricted file access. Choose a VPS when you want a public address and operating-system control without exposing a home router, and you are prepared to perform the same Java, Forge, update, and backup work yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Whichever route you select, treat the pack version as part of the server identity: 0.9.3 on the server, 0.9.3 on every client, and a dated backup before each change. That discipline prevents most connection errors and gives an empty starting world a recoverable history.
