To host Trivia Murder Party 3, run the standalone game on one computer or console, put that device’s game screen where everyone can see it, and have each player open Jackbox.tv in a browser. Players enter the four-letter room code shown on the game screen; their phones, tablets, computers, or other web-enabled devices act as controllers.
Friends in the same room can join locally, while remote friends can join through the game’s online matchmaking and watch through a shared video call. The publisher identifies Discord, Zoom, and Google Meet as examples of video services that should support this arrangement.

What the host needs before starting
The host supplies the game and the screen. Everyone else supplies a browser-enabled device for entering answers and making choices. You do not need a separate game controller for each person.

Buy it for the platform on which you intend to run the session, then check that platform’s current system requirements.
- A visible game screen: The game itself runs on the host’s computer or console. A television, monitor, or shared screen lets the group see questions, timers, results, and the room code.
- One web-enabled device per player: Players use a phone, tablet, computer, or another device with a web browser. They go to Jackbox.tv and enter the code displayed by the game.
- A video call for remote guests: If anyone is elsewhere, use a call that lets the host share the game screen. Jackbox Games’ online-play FAQ names Discord, Zoom, and Google Meet as examples.
- A plan for the player limit: The current product page lists one to eight players. That means the host can invite up to seven other players into the game session.
The product page currently labels the game Early Access and says it is out now in Early Access. Features, platform support, and requirements can change as development continues, so verify the store listing immediately before a scheduled event.

Choose the right way to host
There are two supported arrangements. Local room-code play is suited to people sharing a physical space. Online matchmaking is designed for a group that is not all together; the host still needs to show the game screen to remote participants. A mixed group can combine both: some people sit beside the host while others join through the call.
| Arrangement | Where players are | How they join | What the host must provide | Subscription consideration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local room-code play | In the same room as the game screen | Open Jackbox.tv and enter the displayed four-letter code | The running game and a screen everyone can see | The game’s own matchmaking subscription is not required; a console’s online-service rules may still apply where relevant |
| Remote online play | In different locations | Use the game’s online matchmaking, then join the host’s shared video call | The running game, screen sharing, and a voice/video call | Jackbox says no separate subscription is needed for matchmaking inside the game, but a console platform may require its own online subscription |
| Mixed local and remote play | Some players with the host and others elsewhere | Local guests use the room code; remote guests connect through online play and the call | A visible game screen for local guests and a reliable shared stream for remote guests | Check the host platform’s online-service requirement before the session |
The publisher’s FAQ says online play does not remove local play, so you can still run a conventional house-party session even though online matchmaking is available.
Host setup: a step-by-step procedure
- Confirm the platform. Decide whether the game will run on a computer or console. Open the relevant store listing and check the current operating-system, hardware, and network requirements. Because the title is in Early Access, do not rely on an old requirement list.
- Install and launch the game. Sign in to the account that owns the standalone digital game, install it, and start it before inviting everyone. Leave enough time for an update or first launch if the platform offers one.
- Choose the physical or virtual viewing arrangement. For a local party, position the monitor or television so all players can read it. For remote guests, open your video call and prepare to share the game window or display.
- Start the online call when needed. Discord, Zoom, and Google Meet are specifically named by Jackbox as services that should support play over video. Use the service’s normal screen-sharing feature; the exact buttons differ by app and can change with updates.
- Open the game’s multiplayer flow. Select the local room-code option for a same-room group, or the game’s online matchmaking option when participants are remote. Follow the current on-screen prompts, which may change while the game remains in Early Access.
- Display the room code. Once the lobby shows the four-letter code, keep the game screen visible. Do not read the code only over voice chat if remote players can see the shared screen; showing it reduces transcription mistakes.
- Tell players where to go. Ask every participant to open a browser, visit Jackbox.tv, and enter the four-letter code shown on your game screen. Their browser device is the controller; it does not run the game itself.
- Watch the lobby fill. Confirm that each intended participant appears before starting. The product page supports one to eight players, so stop inviting when the lobby reaches its listed maximum.
- Check audio and visibility. Before launching the first round, ask remote players whether they can see the shared game screen and hear the call. If the host’s microphone creates an echo, use one audio source or mute duplicate devices.
- Start the game. When everyone who is playing appears in the lobby, use the game’s start control. Keep the host device awake and avoid switching away from the game window during timed prompts.
How friends join from a phone, tablet, or computer
Instructions for every player
- Open a modern web browser on a phone, tablet, computer, or another web-enabled device.
- Go to Jackbox.tv.
- Type the four-letter room code currently displayed on the host’s game screen.
- Enter a player name when prompted and submit it.
- Keep that browser tab open. Use the on-screen controls there whenever the game asks for an answer, vote, or other choice.
The official product page describes this browser page as the controller method. A phone or tablet therefore supplements the screen running the game; it does not replace the host’s computer or console.

Have the player return to Jackbox.tv and enter the code again exactly as shown. Room codes are short and can be mistyped, especially when a letter is read aloud. If the host has returned to a menu or started a different session, obtain the newly displayed code and have everyone reconnect to that code.

When a local and remote group play together
Players sitting beside the host can join through the same room-code flow as usual. Remote participants use the online arrangement and watch the shared game screen. The host should keep the call open throughout the session so remote players can hear spoken reactions and receive any instructions that are not visible in the game interface.
Setting up remote play over a video call
Screen sharing
Start the call before launching the lobby, then share the window or display that contains the game. A shared game screen is essential because the room code, questions, timers, and results appear there. The publisher says Discord, Zoom, and Google Meet should support this style of play, “just like previous Jackbox Games.” That wording indicates compatibility, not a guarantee that every account, browser, or network configuration will behave identically.
Audio choices
Use one deliberate audio path. If the host shares system audio through the call, participants should avoid playing the same call on a second nearby device. Echo usually comes from two open microphones or speakers in the same room, so mute spare devices and ask local players to use the host’s room audio rather than joining the call individually.

Reducing distractions
Close unrelated windows before sharing, hide private notifications, and put the game window in a prominent position. Tell remote guests when the lobby is open and when a round has started so they do not attempt to join after the host has moved to another code.

What the official guidance does not specify
The FAQ names compatible video applications but does not provide app-by-app instructions for screen-sharing permissions, audio routing, bandwidth, or latency. If a particular service blocks sharing, consult that service’s current help documentation or switch to another supported call platform rather than assuming the game itself is malfunctioning.
Controllers, screens, and accessories
Players do not need dedicated gamepads. The official product description specifically says that phones and other web-enabled devices work as controllers through Jackbox.tv. The host still needs the computer or console that runs the game and a screen that participants can see, either in person or through a call.
The purchase listing establishes a standalone digital game, not a boxed edition or a required physical accessory. Do not treat a particular phone model, cable, headset, or dedicated controller as a game requirement. Any such equipment is a convenience for your room or call, not part of the documented setup.
Players, session length, and planning
Player count
The official game page lists support for one through eight players. Invite no more than seven other players into the playable lobby. If more people want to watch, organize a rotation or have additional guests observe the shared screen rather than attempting to exceed the listed player count.

Time estimate
The product page lists a duration of 20 minutes. Treat that as a product-page estimate, not a guaranteed total for your event. Joining late, explaining the rules, reconnecting a browser, or running multiple rounds can make the gathering longer.
Scheduling a smooth start
- Send the call link and the intended start time separately from the game instructions.
- Ask guests to have a browser-enabled device ready before you launch the lobby.
- Reserve a few minutes for installing the game or applying an update on the host platform.
- Keep the room code visible until every intended player confirms that their name appears.
- If you plan multiple sessions, explain when a new lobby and new code will be created.
Subscriptions, platform accounts, and purchase questions
Does the game require a separate matchmaking subscription?
Jackbox Games’ online-play FAQ says that a subscription is not needed for online matchmaking within the game after purchase. That statement concerns the game’s own matchmaking service.
Could a console still ask for a subscription?
Yes. The same FAQ qualifies its answer by noting that console players may need a subscription for the console platform’s online services. Whether that requirement appears depends on the console and its current account policy, so check the platform’s rules before buying or scheduling a remote session.
What exactly is being purchased?
The official checkout listing presents Trivia Murder Party 3 as a standalone digital game. The cited listing does not establish a boxed edition, a physical controller, or a bundled accessory requirement. Verify the platform, edition, price, and current system requirements at checkout because Early Access products and storefront details can change.

Troubleshooting the most common hosting problems
The room code is rejected
- Check that everyone is using the code currently visible on the host’s game screen, not an earlier code from a previous lobby.
- Have the player reload Jackbox.tv and re-enter the four letters carefully.
- Confirm that the host has not left the lobby or started another session while the player was typing.
A remote guest cannot see the game
- Confirm that the host is sharing the display or window containing the game, rather than a different application.
- Ask the guest to leave and rejoin the call if the shared stream did not load.
- Keep the game visible while participants join; switching windows can stop or change what is being shared.
A remote guest can see the game but cannot hear the group
- Check the call’s microphone and speaker selection on the host device.
- Mute duplicate microphones or speakers in the same room to remove echo.
- Ask the guest to verify that the call is not muted locally.
The host is prompted for a console subscription
Distinguish the platform prompt from the game’s own matchmaking policy. Jackbox states that its matchmaking does not require a separate subscription, while a console’s online-service subscription may still be required. Check the console account’s current policy rather than assuming the game purchase includes platform access.
The lobby has reached its limit
The product page’s maximum is eight players. Do not try to add a ninth playable participant. Have additional friends watch the shared screen, take turns between rounds, or join a later session.
The game behaves differently from an older guide
The current product page labels the title Early Access. Menus, availability, and platform requirements can change. Use the on-screen flow in the installed version and recheck the current product page or checkout listing before relying on instructions written for an earlier build.

A practical pre-game checklist
- The standalone game is installed on the intended host platform.
- The host has checked current platform requirements and any console online-service rule.
- The game screen is visible to local players or shared in the video call.
- Every participant has a phone, tablet, computer, or other web-enabled device.
- Everyone knows to use Jackbox.tv and the four-letter code shown in the lobby.
- The call’s microphone, speakers, and screen-sharing permissions are ready.
- The lobby contains no more than the product page’s eight-player maximum.
- Players have joined before the host starts the first round.
What is confirmed, and what can change
The publisher’s current product page confirms browser-based controllers, local room-code play, online matchmaking, and a one-to-eight-player range. Its online-play FAQ, dated June 3, 2025, confirms that local play remains available, identifies Discord, Zoom, and Google Meet as examples of video-call services that should support remote play, and explains the distinction between the game’s matchmaking subscription and a console platform’s own subscription.
The product page accessed in October 2026 also identifies the title as Early Access and gives a 20-minute duration estimate. Those labels and estimates are time-sensitive. Recheck the live product page, checkout listing, and your platform’s requirements on the day you host, particularly if your group depends on a console or a newly released update.
