To host a SteamPunk [LPS] server, freeze one pack branch—preferably SteamPunk 1.20.1 v19 on Forge—install its matching server distribution in a clean directory, launch it once, accept the EULA, configure access, and give every player an identical client profile. Start with at least 6 GB of RAM; 6–8 GB suits a small group, while 10–12 GB is a more realistic starting point for five to 15 players.

SteamPunk [LPS] is a LunaPixelStudios pack built around a detailed steampunk theme, technology, exploration, magic, dimensions, quests and advancements. The official CurseForge listing reported 2,987,306 downloads in 2026 and lists a SteamPunk 1.20.1 v19 release on Forge dated May 20, 2026. It also lists a separate 1.19.2 v25 HF branch. These are different installations: never combine their mods, configurations or worlds.

Choose the exact SteamPunk [LPS] branch first

A multiplayer server is not compatible merely because two installations have the same pack name. Minecraft version, Forge loader, pack release, mod files, dependencies and configuration must line up on the server and every client.

Branch Pack release identified in the official listing Loader and Minecraft version Use with
Current branch SteamPunk 1.20.1 v19 Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1 A 1.20.1 v19 client profile and the matching server files
Older branch SteamPunk 1.19.2 v25 HF Forge for Minecraft 1.19.2 A 1.19.2 v25 HF client profile and its matching server files

This guide uses the 1.20.1 v19 branch as the example because it is the current release identified in the listing. If you deliberately choose 1.19.2 v25 HF, substitute that branch’s server distribution, Forge version, configuration and client profile at every step. Do not copy a world from one branch into the other unless the pack’s maintainers explicitly document a supported migration.

What you need before installation

  • A frozen release record: write down the pack name, release number, Minecraft version and Forge version. Keep this record with the server backups.
  • The named server distribution: use the official server-pack archive supplied for the selected release when one is available. A normal CurseForge client installation is not automatically a complete dedicated server.
  • A clean directory: create a new folder reserved for this server. Keep the original archive untouched so you can rebuild the installation.
  • A Java runtime and operating system supported by the pack and Forge: follow the README or launch script shipped with the release rather than guessing a Java version or command-line argument.
  • Storage for the pack, generated world, logs and backups: the pack is substantially larger than vanilla Minecraft, and world-generation data can grow quickly as players explore.
  • Network access: local players can test on the host’s private address. Players outside the home network need a reachable public address, a forwarded listening port and firewall rules, or a managed host.

Install the server distribution in a clean folder

  1. Download the server pack for the selected release. Confirm that its filename or release notes identify SteamPunk 1.20.1 v19 (or the other branch you intentionally selected). Do not mix files from multiple releases.
  2. Preserve the archive. Store the untouched download outside the live server directory and note its release number. This gives you a known-good recovery point if an update fails.
  3. Extract into a new server directory. Avoid placing the files inside an existing vanilla server or another modpack directory. Separate folders prevent old mods, configs, libraries and worlds from contaminating the installation.
  4. Read the included README and launch files. The pack may provide a platform-specific script or additional installation step. Use that supplied procedure, including its Forge installer or library setup, instead of replacing it with a generic Minecraft command.
  5. Launch once without changing the world. Start the Forge server using the supplied script or documented command. The first run normally creates libraries, configuration files, a world directory and the EULA file. Wait for the console to reach a stable state or report that it is ready for connections.

If the first launch stops with a missing library, Java error or mod-loading exception, stop there. Record the complete error, verify the pack archive and Forge version, and fix the installation before accepting the EULA or inviting players.

Accept the EULA and configure the server

  1. Read the Minecraft EULA. After you understand and agree to it, open eula.txt in the server directory and change the required setting from false to true. Do not make this change as a way to bypass the terms.
  2. Set the server name and access policy. Edit server.properties for the message shown in the multiplayer list, difficulty, game rules, player limit and other documented options.
  3. Choose a listening port. Keep the default only if it does not conflict with another service. If you select a different port, use the same value in the host firewall and router forwarding rule.
  4. Protect the player list. Enable the whitelist for a private friends’ server and add players through the server console or the documented operator commands. Give operator privileges only to people who need them.
  5. Set view and simulation distances conservatively. Large modpacks perform more work per loaded chunk than vanilla. Begin with moderate values, then increase them only after observing memory use and tick time.
  6. Restart after configuration. Stop the server cleanly from its console, save the files, then launch again. Never edit configuration while the server is actively writing the same file unless the pack’s documentation explicitly supports it.

Give every player an identical client

Each player must install the same Minecraft branch, Forge loader, SteamPunk release, mods and configuration files. “I installed the same pack name” is not enough if one launcher selected a different release or retained an old configuration.

Client-matching checklist

  • Minecraft 1.20.1 with SteamPunk 1.20.1 v19 for the current branch, or Minecraft 1.19.2 with v25 HF for the older branch.
  • The Forge version required by that release.
  • The complete mod and dependency set from the same pack release.
  • Matching configuration files, including any server-supplied overrides.
  • The same resource or shader setup where a pack component requires it; optional client-only graphics additions should not replace required files.
  • A separate profile for each branch so a launcher cannot accidentally start 1.19.2 files against a 1.20.1 server.

Have one client join the fresh server before distributing connection details. If that test works, give friends the same launcher import or pack release and ask them to remove obsolete profiles when troubleshooting a mismatch.

Test locally before opening the server to the internet

  1. Start with a fresh world. Do not use an important existing save for the first compatibility test. Confirm that the pack reaches a stable console state and that world generation completes.
  2. Join from the host computer. Use the local connection method supported by your operating system and Minecraft installation. Check that the player can move, open inventories and interact with blocks.
  3. Test pack-specific systems. Open the quest interface, verify that advancements register, and visit enough terrain to exercise world generation and dimensions only after the initial spawn is stable.
  4. Review the console and logs. Look for repeated errors, missing dependencies, watchdog warnings, failed datapack loads or a steadily growing memory footprint.
  5. Test a second machine on the same network. This separates game or pack problems from router and public-address problems.
  6. Only then publish access details. Keep the whitelist enabled while you test and remove temporary operators when testing is complete.

Make a home-hosted server reachable

Self-hosting gives you direct control over files, worlds and backups, but a server on a home network is not automatically reachable from the public internet.

Router and firewall path

  1. Give the host computer a stable private IP address, either with a DHCP reservation or a manually managed local address.
  2. Allow the Forge server application or its listening port through the host operating system’s firewall.
  3. Forward the same TCP port from the router’s public interface to the host computer’s private IP. If the server documentation calls for additional protocols, follow that documentation rather than opening unrelated ports.
  4. Check whether your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT. If it does, ordinary port forwarding may not provide a public inbound address; use a managed host or another access method instead of exposing random services.
  5. Test from a connection outside your home network, such as a mobile hotspot. A successful local connection does not prove that public forwarding works.

Share the public address and port only with intended players. Keep the whitelist on, use strong account security, and close the forwarded port when the server is not needed. Never publish your residential address or leave administrative access open while debugging.

How much RAM does SteamPunk [LPS] need?

There is no single guaranteed allocation because player count, exploration, dimensions, chunk distances, automation and other mods change the workload. Provider guidance gives a practical starting range rather than a laboratory performance guarantee.

Source or plan guidance Memory figure How to interpret it
DedicatedMinecraft.host guidance 6–8 GB for 1–5 players A starting range for a small group, not a promise of a fixed tick rate
DedicatedMinecraft.host guidance 10–12 GB for 5–15 players More headroom for a larger active group and heavier exploration
OuiHeberg guidance At least 6 GB A minimum starting point; actual needs depend on activity and settings
Crafty Servers plans 6, 8, 12 and 16 GB options Choose an allocation that leaves room for the pack and operating system; plan sizes are not benchmark results

Use symptoms to adjust resources

  • Frequent out-of-memory stops or garbage-collection pauses: check the server log, remove unnecessary workloads and increase RAM only if the machine has physical memory available.
  • Low memory use but slow ticks: more RAM may not help. Reduce view and simulation distances, identify a machine or chunk-heavy activity, and check CPU performance.
  • Problems only during exploration: new chunk generation is expensive. Pre-generate terrain only with a tool and procedure supported by the pack, and keep a backup before doing so.
  • Host operating system becomes unresponsive: the server is competing with other applications. Reserve memory for the operating system and move the server to a machine with more CPU, RAM and storage capacity.

Monitor the server’s memory pressure, garbage-collection behavior, CPU load, storage space and tick-time warnings during a realistic play session. Do not treat a provider’s advertised RAM tier as proof that a particular number of players will perform well.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting

Self-hosting is usually best for local testing, private play and owners who want complete file control. A managed host trades some control for a prepared environment, a public network location and operational tools.

Decision factor Self-hosted computer Managed modpack host
File control Full access to worlds, mods, configs and logs Access varies by provider and plan
Setup effort You install Forge, configure the OS, router and firewall Some providers advertise pack-specific or one-click installation
RAM and CPU Limited by your hardware and other home workloads Selected from the host’s plan tiers; verify CPU limits as well as RAM
Backups and restore You design, schedule and test them Tools may be included, but retention and restore limits differ
Latency and location Usually tied to your home internet route Choose a region near the players where available
Updates You stage and apply every pack change An updater may be supplied, but you still need a backup and compatibility check
Network protection Your router and provider handle exposure The host may provide managed firewall or DDoS features; confirm what is included
Recurring cost Uses existing hardware and electricity Monthly cost, storage limits and renewal terms vary; verify current terms before purchase

Providers identified as advertising SteamPunk [LPS] installation or pack support include DedicatedMinecraft.host, OuiHeberg, Crafty Servers and StickyPiston. Their current prices, locations, uptime commitments and affiliate terms are not established here, so verify those details directly before choosing a plan. Ask whether the advertised installation is for the exact 1.20.1 v19 release or another branch.

Back up worlds and configurations before every change

  1. Stop the server cleanly and wait for the save operation to finish.
  2. Copy the complete world directory, server.properties, whitelist and permissions files, pack configurations, scripts and any custom datapacks to storage separate from the live directory.
  3. Label the backup with the pack release, Minecraft version, Forge version and date.
  4. Keep at least one backup away from the server machine. A second copy protects against disk failure, accidental deletion and ransomware.
  5. Restore a copy to a test directory before trusting the backup. A file that exists is not necessarily a usable Minecraft restore.

Never update the live world first. Duplicate the server directory, apply the new pack release to the copy, launch it with a test world or a restorable world backup, and inspect quests, dimensions, inventories and logs. Promote the tested copy only after you have a rollback plan.

Fix the most common failures

The client cannot join because of a version or mod error

Compare the complete release record on both sides: Minecraft version, Forge version, SteamPunk release, mod filenames and configuration files. Remove an old profile and import the exact client release again. Do not solve a 1.20.1-versus-1.19.2 mismatch by copying individual mods between branches.

The server starts but crashes while loading

Confirm that you used the named server distribution rather than a client folder. Re-extract the original archive into a clean directory, follow its launch instructions and check the first error in the log. Repeated errors later in the file are often consequences of the first missing dependency or wrong loader.

Players get disconnected during world generation

Test with a fresh world, lower view and simulation distances, and watch CPU, memory and tick-time warnings. If the issue appears only when several players explore, increase resources within the machine’s limits or move to hardware with stronger CPU and storage performance.

Friends can join locally but not from outside

Verify the public address, router forwarding destination, host firewall rule and listening port. Test from a mobile network, and check for carrier-grade NAT. Keep the whitelist enabled while making these changes.

An update damaged the world or quests

Stop the server, restore the pre-update world and configuration backup, and run the new release in an isolated test directory. Do not repeatedly launch a valuable world with an unverified pack combination; each launch can write changes that complicate recovery.

A practical launch checklist

  • Selected one branch and recorded its exact release, Minecraft version and Forge version.
  • Downloaded and preserved the matching server distribution.
  • Installed it in a clean directory and completed a first Forge launch.
  • Read the EULA and set eula=true only after agreeing to it.
  • Configured the port, whitelist, permissions, difficulty and conservative distances.
  • Joined locally with an identical client profile and tested quests and world generation.
  • Created and tested a restorable backup.
  • Configured firewall and port forwarding only if outside players need access.
  • Observed memory pressure, CPU load, storage space and tick-time behavior with the expected number of players.
  • Documented the release and rollback procedure before accepting pack updates.

Final recommendation

For most small groups, the dependable path is SteamPunk 1.20.1 v19 on Forge, installed from its matching server pack, with 6–8 GB of RAM for one to five players and a tested whitelist-protected connection. Use 10–12 GB when five to 15 players will explore actively, but adjust from observed memory and tick behavior rather than from RAM alone. Keep the 1.19.2 v25 HF branch entirely separate, and treat every update as a migration that requires a backup and a test copy.
