What a Squad server requires in 2026
A dedicated Squad server is not the same thing as running the game client. It is distributed as a separate Steam tool and is installed with SteamCMD using App ID 403240. The community-maintained Squad Wiki documents anonymous SteamCMD login and Windows and Linux installation, while the current October 8, 2026 setup guidance identifies Squad 10.6 Hotfix 2, released October 2, 2026, as the latest verified game version in that guide.

Before installing anything, make four decisions:
- Where it will run: a machine you control or rented dedicated hosting.
- How players will reach it: a public address with forwarded traffic, or a provider network that supplies inbound access.
- How it will be administered: local configuration, restricted RCON, or both.
- Where it should appear: Custom Servers for an unlicensed deployment, or the primary Server Browser if it meets the current licensing requirements.
Keep the game build, server files, mods, configuration, firewall rules, and backups aligned. A mismatch in any one of those layers can look like a server failure even when the process itself is healthy.
Self-hosting or renting: choose by control and connectivity
Self-hosting gives you direct access to the operating system, storage, logs, firewall, and network edge. It also makes you responsible for power, hardware failures, updates, backups, DDoS exposure, and obtaining an inbound route. Renting removes much of the physical work, but you must verify what access the provider actually gives you and whether its network and licensing arrangements fit your plan.

| Decision factor | Machine you manage | Rented dedicated hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Operating-system control | Full control if you administer the machine | Depends on the plan; verify shell or administrator access |
| Inbound connectivity | You must have a public route and control router and host firewall rules | Provider supplies the route, but you still need to confirm exposed ports and filtering |
| CPU capacity | Choose and monitor sustained per-core performance | Check the actual CPU model, dedicated versus shared resources, and performance policy |
| Memory and storage | You select capacity, disk type, and replacement strategy | Confirm included RAM, storage headroom, snapshots, and restore controls |
| Maintenance | Updates, security hardening, monitoring, and recovery are yours | Some infrastructure work is handled for you; game administration remains yours |
| Region and latency | Limited by your physical location and connection | Choose a region close to the intended player population |
| Mods and backups | Flexible if you maintain the files and recovery process | Check mod support, upload limits, scheduled backups, and download access |
| Licensing and listing | You must meet the current publisher rules yourself | Confirm the deployment can meet those rules; a hosting plan does not automatically provide eligibility |
| Support and recurring cost | No hosting support bill, but downtime and replacement work are yours | Recurring charge in exchange for infrastructure and support that varies by provider |
Do not treat a provider’s hardware estimate as an official Squad requirement. Your player cap, layer, mod set, tick behavior, and background workload determine the real requirement. A rented machine is sensible when you cannot obtain a usable inbound route, do not want to maintain hardware, or need a datacenter region that your local connection cannot provide.
Confirm that players can reach the host
Check network reachability before spending time on server branding or rotation files. A server can bind to a local interface and accept local connections while remaining invisible to internet players.
Check for CGNAT and addressability
Carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT) places multiple customers behind one public IPv4 address and commonly blocks unsolicited inbound connections. Ask your ISP whether you have a public IPv4 address or a supported port-mapping option. If the ISP cannot provide one, use a host with a routable address or a hosting service that explicitly supports inbound game traffic.
Test from a different network
A connection from the same LAN does not prove internet reachability. Plan an external test using a mobile hotspot or another household, office, or datacenter network after the server starts. This test should cover both discovery and an actual join attempt.
Map every network layer
- The server process must listen on the configured interfaces.
- The operating-system firewall must permit the required protocol and port.
- The router or edge firewall must forward that traffic to the correct private address when self-hosting.
- A cloud or datacenter firewall must allow the same traffic when renting.
- Your provider must not block or rewrite the ports you selected.
Change one layer at a time and record the result. Opening random ports or disabling every firewall makes diagnosis harder and creates unnecessary exposure.
Install the dedicated server with SteamCMD
Stop any running server process before updating or replacing its files. Use a dedicated installation directory rather than mixing server files with a game-client installation.

- Download and extract SteamCMD into a directory reserved for server tools.
- Create a separate destination directory for the Squad server files.
- Open SteamCMD and log in anonymously with
login anonymous. - Install the dedicated-server app with
app_update 403240, directing SteamCMD to the destination directory according to your SteamCMD setup. - Wait for the download to complete, then close SteamCMD or leave it ready for later maintenance.
- Start the server from its installed executable or the launch script supplied with the current build.
Linux procedure
- Install SteamCMD using the distribution’s supported package or the current SteamCMD archive.
- Create a service account and a dedicated installation directory so the server does not run as root.
- Start SteamCMD, run
login anonymous, and install App ID403240into the chosen directory. - Apply ownership and permissions so the service account can read and write configuration, logs, and save data.
- Create a systemd unit or another supervised launch method that starts the server from the installation directory and restarts it only under controlled conditions.
- Run the first launch interactively so you can see errors before placing it under a background service.
Routine updates use app_update 403240. Validation is a repair tool for corruption or unusual crashes, not something the current guidance requires on every routine update. Schedule maintenance, stop the process cleanly, update, and then inspect configuration and logs before reopening the server.

Launch with an explicit baseline
The October 2026 guide gives this as an example parameter set: Port=7787 QueryPort=27165 beaconport=15000 FIXEDMAXPLAYERS=80 RANDOM=NONE. Treat it as a starting configuration, not a universal optimum. The intended player count, selected layers, mods, CPU capacity, and current build may require different values.
Attach those parameters to the launch command or script used by your platform. Keep the command in a version-controlled or backed-up script so that a reboot does not silently revert important settings. Do not expose a partially configured server while you are still changing identity, permissions, and rotation.
What the baseline parameters control
- Port: the game traffic endpoint.
- QueryPort: the endpoint used for server information and discovery.
- beaconport: an additional endpoint included by the example launch.
- FIXEDMAXPLAYERS: the cap requested by that launch.
- RANDOM=NONE: disables random layer selection in the example.
Check the installed server files and the current publisher or community documentation whenever a build changes. Defaults are useful for a first launch, but copying an old port list or cap without checking the current setup can produce a server that starts yet cannot be queried or joined correctly.

Configure identity, rotation, and administration
The server configuration directory is under SquadGame/ServerConfig/. The installation material identifies these important files:
| File or file group | Use | Safe operating practice |
|---|---|---|
Server.cfg |
Core server identity and gameplay-related settings | Back up before edits and change one setting at a time |
Admins.cfg |
Administrative permissions | Grant the minimum role needed and remove former staff promptly |
Rcon.cfg |
Remote administration settings | Use a long, unique secret and restrict who can reach the service |
| Rotation files | Maps, layers, or match sequence | Test the next rotation in a private or quiet window before a busy event |
Set a clear server identity
Choose a name that tells players the region, rules, and intended style without pretending to be an official server. Make the rules available to moderators and players, and keep the identity consistent across restarts so favorites and community announcements remain useful.
Build permissions deliberately
Start with one tested administrator account, then add moderators according to specific duties. Avoid giving every moderator unrestricted control. Keep a dated copy of Admins.cfg and record who can change it.
Protect RCON
Use a long, unique RCON password that is not reused anywhere else. Restrict RCON with host firewall rules, a private management network, or a VPN. Do not expose remote administration broadly to the public internet. A strong password cannot compensate for an unrestricted management endpoint.

Open only the traffic the current configuration needs
The example above establishes the values to verify. The current October guide identifies the game endpoint as UDP 7787 and the query endpoint as UDP 27165, while the example also sets beacon port 15000. Confirm each value in the installed files, the launch script, the host firewall, and any provider control panel before opening access.
| Check | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Game traffic | UDP rule matches the configured game port | Players may see a listing yet fail when joining if this path is blocked |
| Query traffic | UDP rule matches the configured query port | Browser information and discovery can fail independently of game traffic |
| Beacon traffic | The launch value is allowed wherever the current build requires it | An omitted secondary endpoint can prevent expected behavior even when the main port is open |
| Host firewall | Rules target the server process or exact ports and protocol | Local security controls can override router or provider settings |
| Router or provider firewall | Forwarding reaches the machine running the process | Opening a port on one edge does nothing if another edge still drops it |
After changing a firewall, restart only the relevant service if possible and test again from outside the host network. Keep administrative access separate from public game traffic and never assume that a provider’s generic game template matches your current Squad build.
Understand listing and licensing
The available setup guidance distinguishes two visibility outcomes. An unlicensed server appears under Custom Servers. A license is required for eligibility in the primary Server Browser. Installing the dedicated tool does not grant that license.
The current guide also says licensed servers must remain public and describes infrastructure constraints. Because eligibility rules can change, check Offworld’s current licensing process directly before committing to a design that depends on primary-browser placement. Confirm the current application requirements, public-access obligations, and any restrictions on the infrastructure you plan to use.
When diagnosing missing visibility, first check the category in which the server is allowed to appear. Searching only the primary browser for an unlicensed deployment can make a working Custom Server look broken.
Plan CPU, memory, and player capacity from workload
Squad capacity depends on sustained per-core CPU performance, memory headroom, network stability, player count, map layers, mods, and whatever else the host is doing. A high nominal core count does not guarantee good simulation performance if the important work is limited by a slower individual core or by noisy neighbors on a shared machine.
The published 80-player planning figure
A 2026 provider guide lists 32 GB of RAM for an 80-player setup. That is a provider planning estimate, not an official Squad minimum or a guarantee that every 80-player configuration will perform well. Treat it as a budgeting reference, then measure your own deployment with the intended mods and layers.

Capacity validation process
- Start with a conservative player cap and the exact layer and mod set you intend to run.
- Invite testers during a realistic match rather than measuring only an empty server.
- Watch sustained per-core CPU usage, memory pressure, disk activity, network loss, and server responsiveness.
- Repeat with the busiest expected layer and the largest practical number of players.
- Increase the cap only when the measurements remain acceptable over a complete match, including transitions and map changes.
Leave headroom for operating-system services, log growth, updates, administration tools, and unexpected player spikes. If performance degrades, lower the cap or simplify the workload before buying memory alone; additional RAM cannot repair a CPU bottleneck or an unstable network path.
Hardware compatibility when upgrading
If you are upgrading a personal machine, capacity, DDR generation, speed, motherboard support, channel layout, and operating-system limits all matter. A generic 32 GB kit is not a universal recommendation. Check the exact platform specifications and leave room for the operating system and other services.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make operations recoverable
Back up before changes
Back up Server.cfg, Admins.cfg, Rcon.cfg, rotation files, launch scripts, and any provider snapshots before updates or permission changes. Store at least one copy outside the server machine. A backup that remains on a failed disk is not a recovery plan.
Update in a maintenance window
- Announce the maintenance window and stop accepting new matches.
- Stop the server cleanly and confirm the process has exited.
- Copy the configuration and logs.
- Run
app_update 403240through SteamCMD. - Use validation only when corruption or unusual crashes justify it.
- Review changed files, launch parameters, and permissions.
- Start interactively, check logs, and perform an external join test.
- Return the service to its normal supervisor only after the test succeeds.
Monitor the service
Record restart times, crashes, player counts, map transitions, configuration changes, and network incidents. Monitoring should distinguish a process crash from a firewall problem and from a browser-listing problem. Keep enough logs to identify when a regression began, but rotate them so storage exhaustion does not become a new outage.

Troubleshoot a server that does not appear or cannot be joined
| Symptom | Likely area | Checks in a useful order |
|---|---|---|
| Process starts but no outside player can join | Addressability, forwarding, or firewall | Test from another network; verify public address, CGNAT status, router forwarding, provider firewall, host firewall, and the configured game endpoint |
| Server is visible but query details are missing | Query path or mismatched configuration | Confirm the query endpoint in the launch parameters and files, then check the corresponding UDP rules at every edge |
| Local clients can join, internet clients cannot | LAN-only success or CGNAT | Stop treating the LAN test as proof; verify a public route and repeat from a mobile hotspot or other network |
| Server is absent from the primary browser | Licensing or category | Check whether the deployment is licensed and look under Custom Servers when it is not |
| Players receive version or mod errors | Build, mod, or layer mismatch | Compare the server build and enabled content with the client requirements; update deliberately and retest |
| Server crashes after an update | Corrupt files, changed settings, or incompatible content | Restore the last known-good configuration, inspect logs, validate files if corruption is suspected, and reintroduce changes one at a time |
| Performance collapses during full matches | CPU saturation, memory pressure, network instability, or workload size | Measure sustained per-core CPU, memory, network quality, layers, and mods; reduce the cap or workload before expanding hardware |
Do not change several variables between tests. Record the exact build, launch parameters, firewall state, browser category, and test network for each attempt. That makes it possible to tell whether a change fixed discovery, joining, or only the local process.
Security checklist before opening the server publicly
- Run the service under a dedicated account rather than an administrative account whenever the platform permits.
- Patch the operating system and SteamCMD during planned maintenance windows.
- Use a unique RCON secret and keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, and chat.
- Restrict RCON with firewall rules or a VPN; do not expose it to every internet address.
- Allow only the game, query, and other endpoints required by the current configuration.
- Back up configuration and permission files before edits and retain an off-machine copy.
- Remove former administrators and audit permission files regularly.
- Watch disk usage, logs, CPU, memory, and network errors.
- Test recovery on a spare directory or replacement machine before an emergency.
A practical go-live checklist
- Select a host with sustained per-core performance, enough memory headroom, stable networking, and a region suitable for your players.
- Confirm a public inbound path; resolve CGNAT or choose a different host before installation.
- Install App ID 403240 with SteamCMD using anonymous login.
- Launch with explicit, documented parameters and verify them against the current files.
- Configure identity, administrators, RCON, and rotation under
SquadGame/ServerConfig/. - Apply narrowly scoped host, router, and provider firewall rules.
- Decide whether the server will operate in Custom Servers or pursue the current Offworld licensing process for primary-browser eligibility.
- Back up the configuration and test from a network that is not the host LAN.
- Run a realistic match at the intended cap and measure the workload.
- Document the update, rollback, and recovery procedure before inviting a larger community.
The reliable standard for a public Squad server is not merely that the executable runs. It must have an inbound path, consistent configuration, protected administration, an appropriate listing category, and enough measured capacity for the layers and mods you actually run.
