To host Forge Labs’ Zombie Apocalypse (SLOW ZOMBIES) pack for friends, install the matching Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge server files, run them with a Java 8-compatible runtime, accept Minecraft’s EULA, configure the server, and then expose the configured port through your firewall and router. The pack is not a vanilla server: every player must use Minecraft 1.12.2, Forge, and the same Mustard Virus release.

What the Slow Zombies pack is
The modpack is published on CurseForge as Mustard Virus by Forge Labs, targeting Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge. Its infected mobs are designed to react to light, sound and players, so the server experience depends on the mod configuration as much as on the Minecraft world itself.

CurseForge listed 4,688,586 project downloads in 2021. The latest release listed for the project is Mustard Virus 2.1 for Minecraft 1.12.2, dated 31 October 2021. The dedicated slow-zombie server download is named Minecraft+Zombie+Server.zip; CurseForge listed it at 139.0 MB and recorded its upload date as 23 March 2021.
Those details matter because this is a legacy Forge pack. A current Minecraft release, a Fabric loader, or a different modpack version will not be interchangeable with the 1.12.2 server files.

Choose self-hosting or a managed server
You have two practical ways to run the pack. Self-hosting gives you control over files, worlds, Java settings and backups, but you must maintain the computer and network. A managed host charges a recurring fee in exchange for a control panel, data-center connectivity and support.

Hosting plans, prices and availability change, so verify those items in the provider’s current panel before paying.
Requirements for a self-hosted server
- Minecraft 1.12.2 and Forge: the client and server must use the same game version and loader.
- Java 8-compatible runtime: Forge’s 1.12.x documentation identifies Java 8 as the compilation target for this generation of Minecraft and Forge.
- The matching server archive: download the 139.0 MB
Minecraft+Zombie+Server.zipfile that corresponds to the release your players install. - A separate server directory: keep the world, mods, configuration and logs isolated from your regular Minecraft installation.
- Network access: local players need the host’s LAN address; Internet players need a reachable public address and a forwarded port.
- Backups: copy the world and configuration before changing mods, world settings or other server files.
Do not mix files from another mod loader. This pack is Forge-based; Fabric server files or a vanilla server JAR cannot load its mods correctly.
Install the server step by step
1. Create and isolate the server folder
Make a new directory used only for this server. A short path without spaces can make troubleshooting easier, but the important point is separation: do not extract the pack over an existing vanilla world or another modpack. Give the account running the server permission to read and write the directory.
2. Install and verify Java 8
Install a Java 8-compatible runtime on the host machine. If several Java versions are installed, make sure the Forge launch script resolves to the Java 8 installation rather than a newer runtime. A mismatch often appears as an immediate shutdown or a Java error before the world loads.
Record which Java executable the server uses. This makes later troubleshooting easier, especially on machines that also run newer Minecraft versions.

3. Download the complete server pack
Obtain the matching server archive from the Mustard Virus project’s CurseForge files. Use the server download, not merely the client profile or a standalone vanilla JAR. Extract every file into the dedicated server directory and preserve the included folder structure.
Have each player install the same release on the client. “Almost the same” is not sufficient: a changed mod, configuration file or pack version can produce a handshake failure or missing-mod error.
4. Launch the Forge server entry point
Start the Forge server entry point supplied by the server pack, using the normal launch script for the operating system or host panel. Do not substitute a vanilla launcher. On a first launch, Forge and Minecraft create required files and normally stop before accepting connections.
Keep the console visible during this first run. The log identifies the Java runtime, loaded mods and the point at which startup stops. Save the log if you need to diagnose a failed launch.

The first run creates eula.txt and shuts down. Open that file in the server directory, change eula=false to eula=true, save it, and launch the Forge server again. Minecraft Help and Forge documentation both describe this required first-run behavior.
If the server continues to stop immediately, check that the file was saved in the active server directory and that the value is exactly eula=true. A second copy of the file elsewhere will not satisfy the running server.

6. Configure server.properties
After the first successful start, stop the server cleanly from its console before editing configuration. Open server.properties and set values appropriate for your group, including:
- World name: choose the directory in which the world will be created.
- Difficulty: select the survival challenge your group wants.
- PvP: enable or disable player-versus-player damage.
- Maximum players: set a limit the host machine can actually support.
- Server port: keep the configured port in mind when creating firewall and router rules; the default Java server port is 25565.
- View distance and related load settings: reduce them if the host struggles with many entities or players.
Make a backup before changing the world name, mod configuration or any setting that can affect world generation. Changing a world-related value can cause the server to create or open a different world directory.

7. Start with or without the graphical interface
Use the host’s normal Forge launch script. Where the supplied script supports it, the nogui option avoids opening the graphical server window and leaves the console as the administration interface. Watch the console for missing-mod messages, Java errors, rejected connections and save operations.
Do not close the terminal or panel abruptly while the server is running. Stop it through the console so the world can save cleanly.
Test the pack before opening it to the Internet
Test on the host computer
- Start the Forge server and wait until the console reports that it has finished loading.
- Launch the matching Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge client on the same computer.
- Connect to
localhostusing the multiplayer address field. - Enter the world, confirm that the modded content loads, and check that the server console records your connection.
A local connection proves that Java, Forge, the server files and the world can load together. If it fails, fix the installation before changing router settings.
Test from another device on the LAN
- Find the host computer’s local network address.
- From another computer connected to the same router, use that local address and the configured port.
- Confirm that a second player can join, move around, interact with the world and reconnect after a restart.
LAN testing separates a mod or Java problem from an Internet reachability problem. If local clients cannot connect, port forwarding will not solve the underlying issue.

Let friends connect from outside your home
Minecraft’s official guidance notes that Java servers may require both firewall and port-forwarding configuration. The default Java port is 25565, but your rule must use the port shown in server.properties if you changed it.
- Reserve the host’s local address: use your router’s DHCP reservation feature, if available, so the forwarding rule continues pointing to the same computer.
- Allow Java through the operating-system firewall: permit the Java runtime or the server application on the network profiles you actually use. Avoid disabling the firewall entirely.
- Create the router forwarding rule: forward the configured TCP port to the host computer’s local address. Router menus and terminology vary, so follow the current manual for your router model.
- Confirm the server is listening: start Forge, verify the chosen port in the console or configuration, and test from a connection outside your home network.
- Share only the reachable address and port: give trusted players the public address and port, not your private LAN address.
Players on the same LAN normally use the host’s local address. Players on the Internet need the reachable public address and the forwarded port. Some Internet connections use carrier-grade NAT or block inbound connections; in that case, a router rule may not be enough and a managed host can be simpler.
Only give the address to people you trust. Keep the server software, Java runtime and operating system updated within the limits of this legacy pack, and remove forwarding when you no longer run the server.

Every participant should install Minecraft 1.12.2, Forge and the same Mustard Virus release used by the server. The project’s latest listed release is Mustard Virus 2.1, but the server archive and client profile must still correspond exactly to one another.

- Do not let a launcher silently update one player to a different pack release.
- Do not add or remove mods on only one side.
- Do not copy a client-only configuration into the server directory unless the pack specifically includes it as a server file.
- When a player receives a mismatch message, compare the mod list and versions before changing networking.
Performance and administration practices
Control the simulation load
Zombie-heavy worlds can generate substantial entity and path-finding work. If players experience delay, reduce view distance and other player or entity load settings in server.properties before making broad mod changes. Test one change at a time and keep a record of the previous value.
Allocate sensible memory
Give the server enough memory for the pack and expected player count, while leaving adequate memory for the operating system and other applications. More allocation is not automatically faster; swapping or starving the host can make performance worse. Watch the console and operating-system resource monitor during a normal session rather than sizing from the menu alone.
Back up before risky changes
Stop the server cleanly, copy the world directory and configuration files to storage outside the live server folder, and label each backup with its date and pack version. Take a fresh backup before changing mods, world-generation settings or Java arguments. Test that a backup can actually be restored to a separate directory.
Plan restarts and access
Tell players when you will restart the server for maintenance. Keep operator permissions limited to people who need them, and review the console for repeated login failures, crashes or unusual activity. A small private server is easier to manage when its player list and administrative roles remain deliberate.

Choose self-hosting when you already have a reliable machine, control of the router and firewall, and someone willing to handle Java, backups and troubleshooting. It offers the greatest control over files and world data, but your home upload speed, power interruptions and network address can affect everyone’s access.
Choose managed hosting when you want a guided installer, a data-center connection and support without administering an operating system. Confirm that the provider still supports this older 1.12.2 Forge pack, can install the exact release, allows you to download backups, and has a data-center location close enough to your players. Compare recurring cost, player-slot limits, file access, backup retention, geographic latency and cancellation terms rather than choosing on installation convenience alone.

A reliable first-session checklist
- Install a Java 8-compatible runtime and identify the executable used by the server.
- Create a clean server directory and extract

eula.txtso it containseula=true. - Set the world, difficulty, PvP, player limit and port in
server.properties. - Start the server again, preferably with
