To host Shivrs’ Ascendency, use the official AscendencyServerpack0.6.1.zip for Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge, run it with Java 21, and begin with about 6–8 GB of allocated memory. You will also need to accept the Minecraft EULA, configure server.properties, make the server reachable through your firewall and router, and have every player install the identical pack release.

Compatibility checklist before downloading
Shivrs’ Ascendency is not a generic Forge server. The current official listing identifies a specific Minecraft and mod-loader combination, and the client and server must remain on that same combination.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Item | Use for this setup | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft | 1.21.1 | A different Minecraft version can prevent the server or individual mods from loading. |
| Mod loader | NeoForge | Do not substitute Forge or Fabric. |
| Pack release | Shivrs’ Ascendency v0.6.1 | The latest listed release is dated January 17, 2026; the server pack must match the client release. |
| Server archive | AscendencyServerpack0.6.1.zip |
This is the server-specific download listed under Minecraft 1.21 Server Packs. |
| Java | Java 21 | The 1.21.1 setup reference specifies Java 21. |
| Memory | Start at 6–8 GB | This is an operational starting range, not a guaranteed requirement or player limit. |
Record those values before you download anything. The pack is marked “Extra Large” and contains hundreds of mods, custom datapacks, and resourcepacks, so startup time and memory use will be higher than for a lightly modded server.
Download the correct server pack
Use the official project page
Download the server archive from the official CurseForge files listing, where AscendencyServerpack0.6.1.zip appears under the Minecraft 1.21 Server Packs category. The official page identifies itself as the current official Ascendency page and asks users not to redistribute the pack to other platforms. Give players the official project page rather than uploading a copy to a file-sharing service.

- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Create a clean server directory
- Create a new directory dedicated to this server, such as
ShivrsAscendencyServer. Avoid placing it inside a cloud-synchronized folder while you are testing; synchronization conflicts can damage world files. - Copy the downloaded ZIP into that directory.
- Extract the ZIP there. Do not run the server from inside the compressed archive.
- Keep the original ZIP outside the live world directory as a known-good rollback copy.
Do not mix a client ZIP with a server pack, or combine files from v0.6.1 with another release. A seemingly minor version mismatch can produce missing-mod errors, registry differences, or a world that cannot be opened after an update.
Install and verify Java 21
Check the Java executable
Install a 64-bit Java 21 runtime and make sure the startup script uses that executable rather than an older Java found earlier in the system path. Open a terminal in the server directory and run:
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

The output should identify Java 21. If it reports Java 17, Java 8, or another version, install Java 21 or change the script’s Java path. On a machine with several Java installations, use the full path to the Java 21 executable in the launch script so an operating-system update cannot silently switch versions.
Why Java 21 is important
Minecraft 1.21.1 and its NeoForge environment expect a modern Java runtime. Running the wrong major version can stop the server before mods load, produce class-version errors, or create failures that look like a broken pack. Fix the Java version before changing mod files or JVM tuning.
Start the server and accept the EULA
First launch
- Run the supplied Windows or Linux startup script from the extracted server directory.
- Allow the first process to finish or stop after it creates the initial files. A first run normally creates
eula.txt,server.properties, configuration directories, and a world directory. - Open
eula.txt, read the Minecraft EULA, and change the setting toeula=trueonly if you agree to it. - Run the same startup script again.
Do not delete newly created files simply because the first launch stops. The EULA prompt and initial configuration generation are expected. If no files appear, check that the script is running in the extracted server directory and that the account has write permission there.
Keep a plain fallback launch
Before adding performance arguments, make sure the supplied script can start the pack with its normal settings. A plain launch gives you a diagnostic baseline: if a later change causes a crash, remove the extra arguments and test again before investigating mods or world files.

Configure server.properties
Stop the server before editing configuration. Make a copy of the file, then adjust the settings that affect how your group plays:
level-name: choose the world directory name. Changing it later can make the server appear to have lost the original world, so record the old value.difficulty: select the intended difficulty before players begin.view-distance: controls how many chunks the server sends to players. Lower values reduce networking and chunk-generation work; raise them only after observing performance.simulation-distance: controls how far entities and redstone remain active. It can have a substantial tick cost in a busy world.white-list: enable it for a private server, then add trusted player names from the console.server-port: keep the chosen port consistent in the operating-system firewall and router forwarding rule.
Change one group of settings at a time and retain a dated backup. A configuration backup lets you identify whether a lag or connection problem began after a specific edit.
Choose memory and CPU capacity
Start with 6–8 GB of RAM
A current modpack-hosting guide cites 6–8 GB as a practical starting range for Shivrs’ Ascendency. Treat that figure as operational guidance rather than a measured minimum. The right value depends on the number of players, exploration rate, loaded chunks, automation, world age, and the rest of the host’s workload.
Allocate only part of the machine’s physical memory. The operating system, Java process, file cache, and any desktop or monitoring tools still need RAM. If the host has 16 GB total, assigning all 16 GB to Java can make the entire machine swap or become unresponsive.
Increase capacity based on symptoms
- Startup stalls or the process is killed: check available system memory and Java’s error output before simply increasing the allocation.
- Frequent garbage-collection pauses: monitor used and committed memory during world generation and busy play periods.
- Server tick delay while memory remains available: the bottleneck may be CPU speed, chunk generation, view distance, simulation distance, or a particular mod rather than RAM.
- Stable memory but slow joins: inspect upload bandwidth, disk speed, and the distance between players and the host.
There is no responsible fixed player-capacity claim without testing your hardware and a representative world. Measure startup duration, tick time, memory pressure, and disk activity as your player count and world size grow.
Apply JVM options cautiously

- TRUSTED BRAND: With over 130 years of experience, Ravensburger ensures top quality games that stimulate the mind, engage the hands, and touch the heart
-XX:+UseZGC-XX:+ZGenerational-XX:+AlwaysPreTouch- parallel-reference-processing flags
Add these only when the installed Java 21 build supports them. Put them in the startup script’s JVM-options section rather than editing mod files. Keep a second, plain launch command or an untouched copy of the original script. If the server exits immediately after adding an option, remove the new arguments and confirm that the unmodified launch works; then add options individually to identify the unsupported or unsuitable flag.
-XX:+AlwaysPreTouch can make startup consume and commit the configured heap before the server is ready, so a host with limited free memory may appear to hang or trigger operating-system pressure. ZGC settings are tuning choices, not substitutes for adequate CPU, disk, or memory.
Make a home-hosted server reachable
Firewall rule
Allow the Java process, or the configured server TCP port, through the host operating system’s firewall. Apply the narrowest rule that works; do not disable the firewall globally as a troubleshooting shortcut.
Router forwarding
On a home network, forward the same TCP port shown in server.properties from the router to the computer running the server. Give that computer a stable local address so the forwarding rule does not point to a different device after a DHCP lease changes.
Test from outside the LAN
First connect from the host’s own machine, then from another device on the same network, and finally from a player using a different internet connection. A local test can succeed even when the router blocks inbound traffic. Share the public address only after the external test works, and do not publish your home address in a public forum.
Some internet providers use carrier-grade NAT, which prevents ordinary inbound port forwarding. In that case, use a network arrangement that provides an inbound address or choose a managed host instead of repeatedly changing server settings.

Make every client match the server
- Have each player install Shivrs’ Ascendency v0.6.1 through a launcher that supports the pack.
- Confirm the launcher is using Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge, not another loader profile.
- Let the launcher finish downloading all mods, datapacks, and resourcepacks before connecting.
- Enter the server’s public address and configured port.
“Almost the same” is not sufficient. A player on another pack release, Minecraft version, or NeoForge build can receive a missing-mod, mismatched-channel, registry, or handshake error. When one player cannot join, compare the exact profile versions before changing the server.
Operate the world safely
Back up while the server is stopped
- Warn players and stop the server cleanly from the console or supplied script.
- Copy the world directory,
server.properties, whitelist and operator files, configuration directories, and any custom scripts to storage separate from the live server. - Label the backup with the date, pack version, and world name.
- Restore a copy to a separate test directory periodically so you know the backup is usable.
Copying region files while Java is writing them can produce an incomplete backup. Keep at least one backup away from the host machine so disk failure or accidental deletion does not remove both copies.
Stage updates before applying them
When a new pack release appears, duplicate the live server directory and update the duplicate first. Read the release notes, start the copy, and test player login, world loading, dimensions, major machines, and backups. Keep the old server untouched until the new version has passed those checks. Never assume a modpack update is safe for an existing world merely because the Minecraft version stayed the same.

Use a whitelist for private worlds
Enable the whitelist before sharing the address. Add players deliberately, keep operator privileges limited, and remove accounts that no longer need access. This is especially important when a home server exposes a port on a residential connection.

The author describes a custom boss log, hundreds of balance and mod changes, Create integration, new accessories and weapons, skill upgrades, travel options, backpacks, and extensive custom datapacks and resourcepacks. Those systems provide a long-form multiplayer adventure, but they also increase the amount of data loaded during startup and the number of interactions that can affect server ticks.

Plan the first launch as a setup session rather than an instant play session. Let NeoForge finish loading, watch the console for repeated errors, and wait for the world to save successfully before inviting the whole group.
Self-hosting versus a managed server
Self-hosting is appropriate when you want direct control over files and networking and are comfortable maintaining Java, backups, and updates. A managed provider trades some control for a web console, automated installation, and support. Verify that any provider supports the exact 1.21.1 NeoForge release and this server-pack version before paying.
| Decision factor | Self-hosted | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront and recurring cost | Uses your existing hardware and connection; electricity and hardware maintenance remain your responsibility. | Recurring fee; current pricing depends on provider, region, memory allocation, and billing term. |
| RAM and CPU | You choose the machine and can upgrade it, subject to hardware limits. | Choose an advertised allocation; confirm whether CPU resources are dedicated or shared. |
| Latency | Usually best for players near your home connection; upload quality matters. | Select a data-center region close to most players. |
| Backups and restore | You must schedule, store, and test backups yourself. | Tools may be included, but retention, frequency, and restore limits vary. |
| Updates | Full control, with full responsibility for testing and rollback. | Some providers offer installation or update assistance; confirm whether they test this exact pack. |
| Console and files | Direct operating-system and file access. | Web console and file manager may be convenient but can restrict low-level access. |
| Support | Your own troubleshooting. | Support responsiveness and modpack expertise vary; ask specifically about NeoForge 1.21.1. |
Do not judge a plan only by its advertised RAM. Ask whether the provider supports the exact server pack, permits custom JVM arguments, includes off-site backups, and allows you to download the complete world and configuration for migration.
Troubleshooting guide
The script closes immediately
- Run
java -versionand confirm Java 21. - Launch from a terminal so the error remains visible.
- Remove newly added JVM arguments and retry with the plain command.
- Check that the archive was fully extracted and that the account can write to the directory.
The server says the EULA has not been accepted
Stop the process, open eula.txt, read the EULA, set eula=true only if you agree, save the file, and run the supplied script again. Editing a different copy of the file will have no effect; confirm the script’s working directory.
A player gets a mod or registry mismatch
Compare the player’s launcher profile with the server: Shivrs’ Ascendency v0.6.1, Minecraft 1.21.1, and NeoForge. Reinstall the profile if files are missing. Do not copy random client mods into the server or remove server mods to make one client join.
Players cannot connect from the internet
- Confirm the server is listening on the port in
server.properties. - Check the operating-system firewall rule.
- Check router forwarding and the server computer’s local address.
- Test using the public address from a different network.
- Ask the internet provider whether carrier-grade NAT blocks inbound connections.
The server lags during exploration
Watch tick performance while players generate new terrain. Reduce view distance or simulation distance, avoid running several heavy world-generation activities at once, and check CPU and disk usage. Add RAM only when memory pressure is the observed constraint.
An update breaks the world
Stop the server, preserve the original world and configuration, and restore the pre-update backup to a separate directory. Re-test the new release on a copy before attempting another migration.
Bottom line
For a reliable Shivrs’ Ascendency server, start with the official v0.6.1 server pack, Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge, and Java 21. Allocate 6–8 GB as an initial test range, monitor real performance instead of promising a player count, and treat networking, backups, client matching, and staged updates as part of the setup—not optional extras.
