You can host Rust without changing your home router, but you still need a reachable network path. For a public server, rent a managed Rust server so its game and query ports are exposed from a data center. For a small, private group, put the server and every player on a mesh VPN that can relay blocked UDP traffic. Facepunch’s RustRelay is another possibility, but it is an engineering project rather than a one-click tunnel.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Rust servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
The choice depends on who must connect, whether the server should appear in the public browser, how much administration you can do, and whether your network is behind CGNAT or another form of inbound filtering.

Why Rust normally needs port forwarding
A Rust dedicated server accepts incoming game traffic. When the server runs on a computer inside your home network, your router normally has one public address while the server has a private address such as 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x. An outside player cannot reach that private address directly. Port forwarding tells the router which internal machine should receive a connection arriving on a particular port.
Facepunch describes the normal situation plainly: “If you are behind networking gear like a router, and you want people outside your network to connect then you most likely will need to set up ‘port forwarding’.” Without an alternative reachable endpoint, an Internet-only player has no route to the server.

Some Internet providers add another layer called carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT). In that setup, your router does not even receive a unique public IPv4 address; the provider shares one address among many customers. You may be unable to create a working inbound rule even when your router appears to support port forwarding. A blocked inbound port, double NAT, or a provider firewall creates the same practical result: a home-hosted server is not publicly reachable by default.
Removing the router rule does not remove the networking requirement. It changes where the public endpoint lives or uses a private overlay that gives invited players a route to the home machine.
Pick the right no-forwarding design
| Approach | Who can join | UDP support | Public server-browser visibility | Administration | Recurring cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Managed Rust hosting | Anyone who can reach the public address | Provider must expose Rust’s game and query UDP ports | Possible, subject to configuration and rules | Lowest; provider maintains the host | Monthly fee; amount depends on the provider and plan |
| Mesh VPN with relay fallback | Only players invited to the overlay and able to install its client | Works only if the overlay carries the required UDP traffic; blocked direct UDP may be relayed | Normally a private address, not a public listing | Moderate; you administer the Rust machine and the overlay | Depends on the overlay plan; current limits must be checked separately |
| RustRelay or a self-managed VPS relay | Players supported by your relay implementation | Requires an implementation that carries Rust traffic correctly | Depends on how you publish and operate the recipient server | High; authentication, software, monitoring and security are yours | VPS and bandwidth charges, plus engineering time |
| HTTP reverse tunnel | Not automatically suitable for Rust | Usually designed for HTTP/TCP, not Rust’s documented UDP paths | Not established | Misleadingly simple until connections fail | Varies |
Use managed hosting when the server should be open to the Internet or when you do not want every friend to install networking software. Use a mesh VPN for a trusted, private group. Consider RustRelay or a VPS relay only if you can implement and maintain the architecture. Do not assume that a DNS name or an HTTP tunnel solves an unreachable UDP endpoint.

Option 1: use a managed Rust server host
This is the simplest solution for a public server. The provider places the Rust process on a machine with a public address, so your home router is not part of the inbound path. You can still manage the server remotely without exposing a computer on your home LAN.
What to compare before paying
- Rust compatibility: Confirm that the plan runs a current Rust dedicated server and gives you control of the server configuration you need.
- Ports: Verify that the provider exposes both the game/server UDP port and the query UDP port. RCON and Rust+ use TCP, so check whether those features are supported and which ports they use.
- Player capacity: A plan’s advertised slot count is a limit, not a guarantee of a particular tick rate. Check CPU, memory and storage specifications as well as slots.
- Region and latency: Pick a data-center region close to the majority of players. A farther region can make building and combat feel less responsive even when the server is reachable.
- Backups and restores: Look for scheduled backups, downloadable copies and a documented restore process. A wipe, corrupted save or bad plugin update should not destroy the only world copy.
- Mod and plugin support: If you need a modded server, confirm the supported framework, file access and restart controls. A provider that only offers a stock image may not meet that requirement.
- DDoS protection: Facepunch’s guidance for hidden servers emphasizes capable hosting, rapidly changeable IPs and strong DDoS protection. Ask what protection is included rather than treating “protected” as a measurable specification.
- Administration: Check whether you receive console access, log access, scheduled tasks, update controls and a way to rotate credentials.
Deployment sequence
- Create the server instance: Select a region, memory/CPU tier and player limit appropriate for your group. Record the provider’s public address and any assigned game and query ports.
- Install the Rust dedicated server: Use the provider’s Rust image or install through SteamCMD. Facepunch’s dedicated-server application ID is
258550. A typical SteamCMD update command issteamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 258550 validate +quit; use the provider’s documented install path and service wrapper if it supplies one. - Set the server identity: Configure the server name, description, map or seed, world size, password and administrator identity in the host’s control panel or startup configuration. Keep administrator credentials separate from the public server password.
- Assign the ports: Set the server’s game port and query port to the UDP values supplied by the host. If you enable RCON or Rust+, set their TCP ports as documented by the host. Do not assume that the commonly mentioned number 28015 is correct for every installation; it matters only when your server is actually configured to use it.
- Start and update: Start the service, watch the console for a successful world load, and apply Rust updates during a maintenance window. Keep a recent backup before changing plugins or startup parameters.
- Test from outside the host: Join using the provider’s address and port from a network that is not the server itself. Confirm that a second player can connect, that the query information is visible when expected, and that RCON or Rust+ works only from the networks you intend to authorize.
- Harden administration: Use a strong, unique password, limit RCON access, remove unused accounts and review logs. A public game endpoint should not also expose an unrestricted administration endpoint.
When managed hosting is the better answer
Choose this route if players are not technical, if you want public discovery, or if you need the server to remain online while your home PC is off. It also avoids the uncertainty of CGNAT and the upload-speed limits common on residential connections. The trade-off is a recurring hosting fee and dependence on the provider’s region, controls and support.
Option 2: a mesh VPN for a private friends-only server
A mesh VPN creates an overlay network in which approved devices receive private overlay addresses. Your Rust server can listen on the home computer, while friends connect through the overlay instead of your router’s public address. Every invited player must install the VPN client, sign in, and be authorized for the same network.

Tailscale’s documentation explains that when direct UDP is blocked, its connection can fall back to a Peer Relay or a DERP relay. That establishes a path through the overlay, but it does not certify Rust gameplay quality, public server listing, or the current limits of any particular plan. Measure latency and stability with your actual group before relying on it for long sessions.
Set up the private network
- Install the overlay client: Install the same mesh-VPN client on the Rust host and on every player device. Have each person sign in with the account or identity system you administer.
- Approve only invited devices: Enable device approval or equivalent access controls. Do not share an administrator login or accept unknown devices merely to make testing easier.
- Confirm the path: From a player device, verify that the Rust host’s overlay address responds through the VPN. If the overlay reports a relayed path, note the relay location and test during the hours when your group normally plays.
- Bind Rust appropriately: Configure the server to listen on the interface and ports exposed through the overlay. If it listens only on a physical-LAN address, overlay clients may be unable to reach it; if it listens on every interface, use the host firewall to restrict who can access administration ports.
- Share the overlay endpoint: Give friends the overlay address and configured Rust game port, not your home public IP. Keep the address in the group’s private channel.
- Join and measure: Have two or more players connect, move through the world, fight, and transfer items. Watch for packet loss, rubber-banding, voice-chat interference and disconnects. A successful login alone is not proof that the relay is suitable for gameplay.
- Document recovery: Record how to approve a replacement device, revoke a lost device and restart the Rust service. Private overlays fail operationally when the only administrator is unavailable.
Limits of the mesh approach
- Players who cannot install or authenticate the client cannot join.
- The server generally will not be discoverable as a normal public Rust listing; players use the private overlay endpoint.
- A relay can add latency and may reduce consistency compared with a direct path. The effect depends on geography, congestion and the overlay’s relay selection.
- Friends must keep the overlay enabled while playing, and you must maintain both the Rust server and the overlay membership.
- Do not infer plan limits, data caps or a particular relay’s performance without checking the current service terms and testing your group.
Option 3: RustRelay or a self-managed VPS relay
Facepunch documents RustRelay as a relay architecture with a Rust-side relay and a recipient server. The design uses token exchange and authentication so a player can be directed through the relay to the destination server. It is not presented as a generic consumer tunnel that you switch on and forget.
How the architecture differs from a VPN
A mesh VPN extends a private network to player devices. A RustRelay-style design instead places relay components between the player and the recipient server and passes the connection according to the relay’s protocol. A VPS with a public address can provide the reachable side, while the actual Rust server remains elsewhere, but the components must be implemented and configured to interoperate.

Engineering checklist
- Protocol correctness: Carry the UDP game and query traffic Rust expects. A relay that handles only browser HTTP requests is irrelevant.
- Authentication: Validate tokens, expire them, prevent replay and protect any service credentials used between relay components.
- Addressing: Give the relay a stable public endpoint and decide how players learn the destination. A DNS name can make an address memorable, but it does not create a network path by itself.
- Capacity: Estimate concurrent players, packet rates and bandwidth. Relaying every packet through a small VPS can become the bottleneck or produce additional latency.
- Failure handling: Monitor relay health, log connection failures without leaking tokens, and provide a way to rotate credentials or move to a new VPS address.
- Rust compatibility: Re-test after Rust server updates. A relay that worked with one server release is not automatically guaranteed to work with later networking changes.
- Security boundaries: Keep RCON and Rust+ administration traffic separate from the public game path unless the design explicitly protects them.
This route makes sense for an operator who can maintain software, a VPS and monitoring. For a typical friends-only group, a mesh VPN is less work; for a public community, managed hosting is usually more predictable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Ports and the 28015 question
Rust’s normal server and query traffic uses UDP. RCON and Rust+ use TCP. That distinction matters because many generic tunnel products handle TCP or HTTP well but do not carry UDP correctly.
| Traffic | Transport | What must be reachable |
|---|---|---|
| Rust game/server traffic | UDP | The UDP port configured for the server |
| Server query traffic | UDP | The UDP query port configured for browser/status queries |
| RCON | TCP | The configured RCON TCP port, restricted to administrators |
| Rust+ | TCP | The configured Rust+ TCP port, if the feature is enabled |
You do not universally need to forward port 28015. You need a reachable path to the actual game and query ports configured for your installation. A managed host exposes those ports from its infrastructure; a mesh VPN carries them inside the overlay; a relay must explicitly support them. If a setup guide tells you to open only a TCP web port, it has not demonstrated that it can carry Rust gameplay.

CGNAT and blocked-ISP troubleshooting
Players cannot connect to a home-hosted server
- Check whether the players are using the server’s overlay address, managed-host address or relay endpoint. A private LAN address works only for devices on that LAN or an equivalent overlay.
- Confirm that the Rust process is running and listening on the configured UDP game port and query port.
- Verify the host firewall allows the selected traffic on the interface used by the chosen design.
- If you attempted router forwarding, compare the router’s WAN address with the address shown by an independent Internet connection. A mismatch can indicate CGNAT or another upstream NAT layer.
- Test from a genuinely external network, such as a mobile connection. A test from the same home LAN can succeed even though outside players remain blocked.
The server works directly but not through a relay
- Confirm that the relay carries UDP rather than only TCP or HTTP.
- Check whether the relay forwards both game and query traffic; forwarding only one can produce a server that appears online but cannot be joined normally.
- Measure latency and packet loss from two player locations. If the relay path is unstable, move the relay region or choose managed hosting rather than masking the problem with more configuration.
- Review token expiry, authentication logs and clock synchronization on all relay components.
The server is reachable but absent from the browser
Public listing depends on query traffic, server configuration and Facepunch’s rules. A private mesh-VPN address is not the same as a public listing. On a managed host, verify that the query UDP port is exposed and that the provider has not placed it behind a restricted firewall. On a custom relay, do not assume that relaying player traffic automatically makes the server discoverable.

Security and operating practices
- Keep the Rust server updated, but schedule updates and back up the world before changing versions or plugins.
- Expose only the ports required for the chosen design. RCON and Rust+ are TCP administration-related paths and should not be left broadly accessible.
- Use separate credentials for the hosting account, operating system, RCON and overlay administration.
- Revoke former players’ overlay access and rotate relay tokens when a device or credential is lost.
- Monitor CPU, memory, disk space, bandwidth and restart events. A server that is technically reachable can still be unplayable when resources are exhausted.
- Keep an offline or provider-independent backup of important world data when the server matters to your group.
Facepunch rules still apply
Changing the network path does not exempt the server from Facepunch’s community-server requirements. Follow the current rules for server operation, naming, plugins, administration and player treatment. Delisting or other sanctions are possible for violations. A private overlay can reduce public exposure, but it is not a permission to ignore the rules.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Need an open public server? Choose managed Rust hosting with the required UDP game/query ports, an appropriate region, backups and DDoS protection.
- Only a known group, and everyone can install a client? Use a mesh VPN, test its direct and relayed paths, and accept that the server will be private rather than normally browser-discoverable.
- Need a custom relay and have engineering capacity? Study RustRelay’s two-sided architecture, then validate authentication, UDP handling, bandwidth, monitoring and Rust-version compatibility on a VPS.
- Considering an HTTP tunnel or DNS record? Stop and verify the transport first. Neither an HTTP-only tunnel nor a DNS name supplies the UDP reachability Rust requires.
