What a Plexiglass Mountain server actually requires
Plexiglass Mountain is a modpack, not a separate server program. The server runs a matching Minecraft and Forge environment with the pack’s server-side mods, configuration, libraries, and world data. A normal vanilla server jar is not sufficient.
Feed The Beast describes its packs as server-ready and publishes server files for each release. The current listing identifies release 1.2.4 with server release ID 2302, alongside older releases. Pick one release before you begin. Updating only the clients or only the server creates mismatched registries, missing mods, and connection errors.

- A computer or hosted plan that can run Java and keep the server online.
- The FTB Plexiglass Mountain server installer for the chosen release, or a host that explicitly lists that release.
- A compatible Java runtime for the pack’s Minecraft version.
- Enough CPU, memory, storage, and network upload capacity for the number of players and the way they explore.
- A plan for backups, updates, permissions, and recovery before inviting friends.
Keep an untouched copy of the installer, the exact release identifier, and your configuration. That record lets you recreate the server after a disk failure or roll back a failed update.
Choose between self-hosting and managed hosting
Your first decision is whether you want control over the machine or convenience. Both approaches use the same client compatibility rules.

Self-host Plexiglass Mountain with the official FTB files
1. Select and record one release
Open the Feed The Beast server-files listing and select Plexiglass Mountain 1.2.4 (ID 2302), or deliberately choose an older release if your group already uses it. Write the release number in your setup notes. Do not mix an older server directory with files from a newer pack unless the pack documentation explicitly describes that upgrade path.
2. Prepare a dedicated server directory
Create a folder used only for this server, such as PlexiglassMountainServer. Avoid a protected operating-system directory and avoid putting the live world inside a cloud-synchronized folder. A dedicated location keeps logs, configuration, libraries, scripts, and world saves together and makes backups straightforward.
Use a fast local drive with several gigabytes of free space beyond the initial download. Modded worlds grow as players explore; leave room for temporary files, backups, and a second copy during upgrades.
3. Install a compatible Java runtime
Install the Java major version required by the pack’s Minecraft and Forge combination. The FTB installer or its release notes may identify the expected runtime. Verify the installation from a terminal with java -version. If the command is not found, add Java to the operating system’s PATH or use the full path to the Java executable in your launch script.

4. Download the FTB server installer
Download the server installer associated with the release you recorded. FTB provides platform-specific downloads and Windows command instructions on its server-files page. Place the installer directly in the dedicated server directory; do not run it from a temporary downloads folder and then move only part of the generated files.
5. Run the installer in that folder
Launch the installer according to your operating system. It should unpack the server libraries, Forge components, scripts, and pack configuration into the directory. Let the process finish without closing the terminal. If it reports a missing Java executable, fix Java first and run the installer again.
After completion, inspect the directory rather than assuming the server is ready. You should see a generated launch script, configuration files, libraries, and a place for the world save. The exact filenames can vary between pack releases and operating systems.
6. Complete the EULA step
The first launch normally stops until you accept Minecraft’s EULA. Read the EULA, then change the generated EULA setting to true only if you agree to it. Restart the launch script after saving the file. If the process still stops, check that the file is in the server directory, that it was saved with the expected name, and that the value was not changed by a text editor’s formatting.
7. Review server.properties before inviting anyone
Open server.properties in a plain-text editor and set the options that matter to your group:
- Server name and message: identify the world so players choose the correct entry.
- Game mode and difficulty: set the intended survival or creative rules before the world is generated.
- View and simulation distance: lower these if CPU load or memory use is high; higher values increase the area processed around each player.
- Whitelist: enable it if the server is private, then add each player’s Minecraft name from the console or management interface.
- Server port: keep the configured value consistent with your firewall and router or with the address supplied by a host.
- Online-mode and authentication settings: leave normal authentication enabled unless you understand the security consequences of changing it.
Change one setting at a time and keep a dated copy of the file. A typo can prevent startup, and a backup makes it easy to return to the last known-good configuration.
8. Allocate Java memory sensibly
Use the generated launch script as the starting point, then adjust its minimum and maximum heap values for the machine. Leave memory for the operating system, Java’s non-heap allocations, file caching, and any other services running on the computer. Giving Java every available gigabyte can make the host less stable, not more.

Watch the server log and operating-system memory usage during exploration, when new chunks generate. Repeated out-of-memory errors call for more available memory, fewer simultaneous workloads, or lower view and simulation distances. Long pauses followed by recovery often indicate garbage-collection pressure rather than a simple lack of total RAM.
9. Start the server and wait for the ready message
Run the generated launch script from the server directory. Keep the console open while it loads Forge and the mods. The server is ready only after the log reports that it has finished loading and is listening for connections. The first launch can take longer while libraries and configuration files are created.
Stop the server from its console using the supported stop command; do not routinely close the window or kill the process. A clean stop flushes chunks and player data and reduces the chance of a damaged world.
10. Test locally before publishing the address
Connect from the same machine or local network first. Confirm that the world loads, the pack’s items and recipes appear, and the console remains free of repeated errors. Create a small test world or use a backup while changing settings so your main save is not your first diagnostic tool.
Let friends connect without exposing the wrong port
Players outside your home network need a route to the server. Self-hosting usually means allowing the configured port through the host’s operating-system firewall and forwarding that same port on the home router to the server computer. Your friends then use the public address and port shown by your configuration.
Port forwarding is not required when everyone is on the same local network, when you use a private virtual network that places the players on one overlay network, or when a managed host provides a public endpoint. These alternatives have their own installation, latency, and trust considerations. Never publish administrative credentials or your router’s management address.
If a friend cannot connect, test in this order:
- Confirm the server console says it is running and listening.
- Confirm the friend is using the current public address and the exact configured port.
- Check the operating-system firewall rule and router forwarding target.
- Check whether your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, which can prevent inbound forwarding.
- Try a private overlay network or managed host if inbound connections are not possible.
Make every client match the server
Each player should install the same Plexiglass Mountain release, Minecraft version, Forge version, and mod files. A player on 1.2.3 cannot reliably join a 1.2.4 server even if both installations are labeled Plexiglass Mountain. Ask everyone to use the same launcher profile or distribute a documented profile name and release number.

Before troubleshooting a connection, compare:
- Pack version and FTB release identifier.
- Minecraft and Forge versions shown by the launcher.
- Mod lists and configuration files, including any server-required dependency.
- Java major version and launcher memory settings.
- Resource packs or client-only additions that might alter startup, while keeping server-required files identical.
Do not copy a live server’s world folder into a client installation as a substitute for installing the pack. Keep world data on the server and use a separate client profile for each player.

How much RAM does Plexiglass Mountain need?
There is no authoritative RAM-per-player formula for this pack. Actual demand changes with player count, chunk generation, view distance, automation, entities, data packs, plugins, and the background tasks on the host machine. Two groups with the same number of players can have very different requirements.
As a vendor-specific starting point, StickyPiston lists a 6 GB RAM guideline for its Plexiglass Mountain 1.2.4 service on Minecraft 1.18.2. It describes that figure as a starting guideline rather than a universal benchmark and notes that more memory may be appropriate as players, loaded chunks, or mod activity increase.
For a self-hosted machine, begin with conservative Java heap settings, then observe:
- Free system memory while the server is running.
- Tick-time or lag warnings in the console during travel and automation.
- How long chunk generation takes when several players explore different directions.
- Whether garbage collection causes repeated long pauses.
- Disk space consumed by the world and by retained backups.
Reduce view and simulation distances, limit unnecessary background services, and pregenerate or explore the world gradually before buying more hardware. CPU single-thread performance and storage latency can be as important as heap size.

Managed hosting is the easiest route when you want friends to connect without configuring a home router. Confirm pack availability, Minecraft version, Java/Forge support, backup policy, and cancellation terms before paying.

Managed panels simplify file edits and restarts, but they do not remove compatibility work. Uploading a world from a different pack release can corrupt or transform it, so take a provider backup before changing versions. Export your configuration and world periodically in case you migrate to another host.
Backups, updates, and safe rollback
Back up before every risky change
Stop the server cleanly, copy the world directory and configuration, and label the archive with the date, pack release, Minecraft version, and Java version. Keep at least one copy on a different device or storage service. A backup stored on the same disk does not protect against disk failure.
Update in a disposable copy first
Duplicate the server directory, install the candidate pack release in the copy, and test a copy of the world. Check machines, inventories, recipes, dimensions, and console errors before scheduling downtime for the live world. Never overwrite the only working installation during an experiment.
Record changes
Maintain a short changelog containing configuration edits, operator changes, installed add-ons, and restore points. When a player reports a new problem, the timeline often identifies the change faster than a complete reinstall.
Troubleshooting the failures players see most often
“Incompatible mod list” or missing-mod errors
Compare the client’s pack release and Forge version with the server’s recorded values. Reinstall the official profile rather than adding individual jar files at random. If the server was updated, either update every client or restore the previous server release and world backup.
The server closes during startup
Read the first error and its preceding stack trace in the log, not only the final shutdown line. Common causes include an unsupported Java major version, insufficient heap, a damaged download, or an edited configuration with an invalid value. Restore the last known-good configuration, verify Java with java -version, and rerun the installer or launch script from the correct directory.
Players time out or see “connection refused”
Confirm the process is listening, then check the address, port, firewall, and router forwarding. A server bound to a local-only address cannot accept internet connections. Carrier-grade NAT may make forwarding impossible; use an overlay network or managed host instead of repeatedly changing random router settings.
Severe lag when exploring
Look for simultaneous chunk generation, high entity counts, large automation builds, or a view distance that is too high for the CPU. Lower distances, ask players to spread exploration over time, and watch tick-time warnings. Adding RAM alone may not fix CPU-bound lag.
World rollback or missing progress
Check the timestamp of the last clean shutdown and backup. Stop the server before restoring, keep the damaged copy for diagnosis, and restore the complete world and matching configuration rather than only one subfolder. If a managed host offers point-in-time restores, note that restoring an older world can also remove newer player data.
Friends can join but cannot use commands
Use the server console or host panel to grant operator status only to trusted accounts. For a private group, enable the whitelist and remove departed players. Do not solve a permissions problem by disabling authentication.
Operational checklist
- Record the exact Plexiglass Mountain release and server ID.
- Keep server files in a dedicated directory with sufficient free disk space.
- Use the Java version required by the selected Minecraft and Forge release.
- Accept the EULA knowingly and keep authentication enabled.
- Configure whitelist, difficulty, distances, and port before opening access.
- Test a local connection, then test one external player.
- Back up the world and configuration before pack or Java changes.
- Keep a second copy of the installer and a dated change log.
- Tell every player to use the same launcher profile and release.
- Review logs and resource use after each new player, major build, or update.
For maximum control, use the official FTB installer on your own machine. For the least networking and maintenance work, choose a managed service that explicitly supports Plexiglass Mountain 1.2.4, then verify its resources and backup terms before moving your world.
