To host Mustard Virus, run the pack on a Minecraft: Java Edition 1.12.2 Forge server, install the pack’s server files, and make every player’s Minecraft version, Forge build, and mod files match the server. Test on your local network first; internet players normally need Java allowed through the host firewall and TCP port 25565 forwarded to the server computer.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
Mustard Virus is a zombie-apocalypse pack in which infected mobs are drawn to light, sound, and players. The original Mustard Virus 2.1 release is marked for a new map, so choose the release deliberately and keep a world backup before changing files or upgrading.

Mustard Virus is a Forge modpack for Minecraft: Java Edition 1.12.2. The Modrinth project lists both client and server support, which means it can be run on a dedicated Forge server rather than only in a single-player installation. Bedrock Edition, Realms, and an unmodified vanilla server are not compatible with this pack.
The original CurseForge listing identifies the main release as Mustard Virus 2.1 (FOR NEW MAP ONLY) for Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge, released October 31, 2021. Treat the new-map warning literally: do not load that release into an established world unless you have a tested backup and have confirmed that the pack author supports the transition.

Download figures are useful only as a rough indication of the pack’s reach. A Modrinth versions page captured in 2026 showed 144.6K downloads, while the original CurseForge listing showed 4,688,586 downloads at its 2026 crawl. Those totals change over time and do not represent a performance guarantee, a supported player count, or a recommended server configuration.
Decide whether to self-host or rent a managed server
Self-hosting gives you direct access to every file, configuration, world backup, and launch setting. It also makes you responsible for Java, Forge installation, router configuration, firewall rules, hardware failures, and keeping the machine online. A managed Minecraft Forge host handles much of the network and operating-system work in exchange for a recurring fee and limits imposed by the selected plan.
Recommended Free Tools
| Decision point | Self-hosting | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | Install Java and Forge, copy pack files, accept the EULA, and configure the network. | Usually deploy a Forge instance from a control panel, then upload or select the pack. |
| File and configuration control | Full access to mods, configs, scripts, logs, and worlds. | Usually available through a panel or file manager, with provider-specific restrictions. |
| Network administration | You must permit Java in the firewall and forward the game port. | The provider normally supplies the public address and handles inbound routing. |
| Uptime responsibility | Your computer, power, internet connection, and operating system must stay available. | The provider maintains the host hardware, but outages and maintenance windows remain possible. |
| Backups | You choose where and how often to make independent copies. | Automated snapshots may be available; check retention, restore method, and whether backups are stored separately. |
| Cost | No hosting subscription, but electricity, storage, and an always-on computer have costs. | Recurring charges and possible limits on memory, storage, backups, and player slots. |
| Support | You diagnose Forge, mod, Java, and network errors yourself. | Support may help with the service and panel; modpack-specific troubleshooting may still be your responsibility. |
If you choose a managed service, verify its current Forge 1.12.2 support, available memory, file-upload method, backup policy, location, cancellation terms, and whether custom modpacks are allowed. Commercial terms change, so do not rely on an old video, discount code, or historical listing.
Prepare the files and make a backup
Pick a pack release
For a fresh world, use the Mustard Virus 2.1 distribution labeled for a new map. Preserve the original archive in a separate location. Keeping an untouched copy makes it possible to compare files, reinstall a damaged server, or reproduce the same installation for another player.
Create a server workspace
Make a dedicated, empty folder for the server. Do not install Forge into your general Downloads directory or into an existing vanilla world folder. A clean directory prevents old mods, configs, libraries, and launch scripts from being mistaken for files belonging to the new installation.
Back up before every risky change
Stop the server before copying a world. Back up the complete world directory, not only the region files: dimensions, player data, advancements, scoreboard data, and pack-specific files can all matter. Also retain copies of the mods and config directories and note the exact Minecraft and Forge versions used.

Install the matching Forge 1.12.2 server
Choose the Forge build
The official Forge 1.12.2 page listed build 14.23.5.2864 as the latest and 14.23.5.2859 as recommended at the time of the documented crawl. Those labels do not override the pack’s requirements. Use the Forge build that the Mustard Virus files and your clients expect; a newer build is not automatically interchangeable with the one used to create the pack.
Install into the clean folder
- Download the Forge 1.12.2 installer that corresponds to the build you selected.
- Place the installer in the empty server folder.
- Run the installer in server mode with a command equivalent to
java -jar forge-1.12.2-<build>-installer.jar --installServer. The graphical installer also provides an install-server option. - Allow the installer to create the Forge libraries and launch files. Generated names vary by Forge build, so use the files actually created in this directory rather than assuming a particular jar name.
If the installer cannot download or locate the vanilla server jar, retry in a clean directory and follow the Forge tutorial’s fallback: install the matching vanilla server jar first, then run the Forge installer again. Dependency or checksum errors often indicate an incomplete download, a blocked connection, or a folder containing leftovers from an earlier attempt.
Run once and accept the EULA
- Start the generated Forge server script or jar once.
- Wait for the initial files to be generated, then stop the process cleanly.
- Open
eula.txtand read Mojang’s EULA. - Change
eula=falsetoeula=trueonly if you accept the terms. - Start the same generated script or jar again and watch the console for a successful Forge boot.
The exact launch command can differ between Forge builds. If the installer creates a platform-specific script, use that script and keep the working directory set to the server folder so that libraries, configs, and worlds are found correctly.
Install Mustard Virus server files
A client pack archive can contain files that a dedicated server must not load. Use the server-compatible distribution or server override supplied with the pack. Copy the server-side mods, config, and any supplied world, map, or override files into the Forge server directory, merging folders only when the distribution instructs you to do so.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Mods: copy the server-required mod jars exactly as supplied. Do not rename jars unless the pack documentation says it is safe.
- Config: copy the pack’s configuration files so gameplay rules and mod settings match the intended release.
- World or map: place a supplied starting map where the server can load it, following the distribution’s folder name and level settings.
- Overrides: server overrides exist to carry files intended for server installation; apply them instead of blindly copying every client file.
- Client-only visuals: leave shaders, resource-pack extras, and other display additions out of the dedicated server.
Modrinth’s pack format documentation distinguishes server files from client files for this reason. If the archive has separate client and server folders, install only the server set on the host and give players the client set through their launcher.
Start, monitor, and tune the server
Launch the Forge server with the generated script or with the command supplied by the installer. If you maintain your own script, the Java pattern is generally java -Xms<minimum>G -Xmx<maximum>G -jar <generated-forge-jar> nogui; substitute values appropriate for the computer and leave enough memory for the operating system. There is no authoritative RAM requirement or player-capacity benchmark published for Mustard Virus, so avoid treating a generic memory number as a guarantee.

During the first complete start, watch the console rather than immediately inviting friends. Record the first error, not only the final crash message. Pay particular attention to missing dependencies, duplicate mod IDs, rejected client connections, world-generation errors, and out-of-memory messages. Stop the server before editing configs or replacing jars.
Let the server finish generating its world and enter it locally before changing difficulty, spawn, view-distance, or mod settings. Make one change at a time and keep a dated backup so you can identify which change caused a problem.

Test from the host’s LAN
- Start the server and wait until the console reports that it is ready for connections.
- On the host computer, connect using
localhostor the local address shown by the operating system. - From another computer on the same home network, connect using the host’s private IPv4 address, such as
192.168.x.x. Use the actual address assigned to the server machine. - Confirm that players can join, load the world, and remain connected while the console stays free of repeated errors.
A successful LAN test proves that Forge and the pack can start; it does not prove that the router or public address is configured.
Allow Java through the host firewall
When the operating system asks whether Java or the server process may communicate on private networks, allow the rule for the network profile you actually use. If you previously denied it, open the firewall’s inbound rules and permit the Java runtime or the specific server application on the server network. Restrict the rule to the needed profile and port instead of disabling the firewall entirely.
Forward the game port
Minecraft Java servers normally listen on TCP port 25565. In the router’s port-forwarding page, create a rule that sends TCP 25565 from the router’s public side to TCP 25565 on the server computer’s private address. Give the server computer a DHCP reservation or another stable private address; otherwise the forwarding rule can point to the wrong machine after a reboot.
- Find the server computer’s current private address.
- Reserve that address in the router, if the router supports reservations.
- Forward TCP 25565 to that address.
- Confirm that the server’s
server.propertiesdoes not specify an unintended port or bind address. - Have a friend test from outside your home network using your current public address.
Your internet provider may use carrier-grade NAT or block inbound connections. In that case, a normal port-forward rule cannot make the server reachable from the public internet; use a supported tunnel or a managed host instead of exposing random ports or disabling network security.

Set up every player’s client
Every player must install Minecraft Java Edition 1.12.2, the same Forge build as the server, and the same Mustard Virus pack files. A client can fail to connect even when its Minecraft version is correct if one mod jar, config, or Forge build differs.
- Install a launcher that supports 1.12.2 Forge packs, such as the Modrinth App, Prism Launcher, MultiMC, or ATLauncher.
- Import the Mustard Virus pack or create a 1.12.2 Forge instance and install the exact pack release.
- Check the instance’s Forge version against the server’s version.
- Do not add, remove, or update individual mods unless all players and the server receive the same tested change.
- Launch once in single-player to confirm that the client reaches the title screen and creates the expected logs.
- Connect with the server’s LAN address for local play or public address for remote play.
Pack formats can provide separate server overrides. Use those files on the server and keep the ordinary client instance for players. Modrinth documents launcher-based installation as well as server-side approaches such as Modrinth Servers, mrpack-install, and the itzg/minecraft-server Docker image; these are deployment options, not a reason to mix client-only files into a Forge server.
Do you need OptiFine?
No. OptiFine is not required on the dedicated server. The Mustard Virus Modrinth page describes it as a manual client addition for shaders and resource-pack features in Minecraft 1.12.2. A separate Mustard Virus+ client variant identifies OptiFine HD U G5 for that visual purpose.
Install OptiFine only on a player’s client when that player needs its rendering features and the pack’s instructions support the exact version. Keep the OptiFine jar and shader files out of the server’s mods directory unless the pack maintainer explicitly documents a server-side dependency. If a server crashes after you copy a visual mod, remove it and retest the clean server installation.
Compatibility reference
| Component | Server | Client | What must match |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minecraft | Java Edition 1.12.2 | Java Edition 1.12.2 | Exact Minecraft release |
| Forge | Forge 1.12.2 build selected for the pack | The same Forge build | Build number, not merely the 1.12.2 label |
| Mustard Virus files | Server-compatible mods, configs, and supplied map or overrides | Matching client pack files | Mod jars and required configuration must be compatible |
| OptiFine | Not required; normally omit | Optional visual add-on for supported shaders or resource packs | Never use it as a substitute for a missing gameplay mod |
| Network | Listening on the configured port | Uses the correct LAN or public address | Firewall and router must permit the connection for remote play |
Troubleshoot the common failures
The Forge installer will not complete
Move the installer to a genuinely empty directory and retry with the official Forge 1.12.2 installer. Check that Java can reach the dependency servers and that the installer was not truncated. If download or checksum errors continue, install the matching vanilla server jar first, then rerun the Forge installer as described in the Forge installation tutorial.
The server starts but a client is rejected
Compare the Minecraft version, Forge build, and every mod jar on both sides. Remove accidental duplicate jars and confirm that the client did not receive a newer or older pack update. Read the server log and the client’s latest Forge log for the first mismatch named; the final disconnect line is often only a consequence.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
The server crashes while loading mods
Stop copying files from the client until the server boots with the documented server set. Remove shaders, resource-pack loaders, OptiFine, and other display-only additions from the server. Then check for a missing dependency, duplicate mod ID, or configuration file from a different pack release.
The client crashes before reaching the menu
Launch the unmodified Mustard Virus client instance and inspect the Forge log for the first missing or incompatible mod. Add optional visual tools only after the base pack launches. Minecraft 1.12.2 is a legacy stack, and the reviewed official pages do not publish one universal Java-major-version rule; test the Java runtime expected by the exact Forge build instead of assuming that the newest Java release will work.
Friends cannot connect
- Confirm that the server process is still running and has completed startup.
- Verify that the friend is using the correct public address, not the server’s private
192.168.x.xaddress. - Allow Java through the host firewall.
- Check that TCP 25565 forwards to the server’s current private address.
- Confirm that the router’s public address has not changed and that the internet provider is not using carrier-grade NAT.
- Test locally again to separate a mod problem from a network problem.
The world is missing, reset, or behaves strangely
Stop the server and inspect the configured level name and world directory. Do not overwrite an existing world with the Mustard Virus 2.1 new-map release. Restore the last known-good backup, then test the pack on a separate copy before attempting an upgrade or config migration.
The server runs out of memory or becomes unresponsive
Check the console and operating-system memory usage, then make sure the Java heap is not consuming all memory needed by the operating system. Remove duplicate files, avoid repeatedly forcing world generation while players are connected, and test with fewer simultaneous activities. Because no authoritative Mustard Virus hardware or RAM benchmark is published, measure your own server under the intended workload rather than relying on a universal player-capacity claim.
Backups, updates, and safe administration
Use a repeatable backup routine
- Stop the server before making a full world backup.
- Keep at least one copy on a different disk or machine from the live server.
- Label backups with the date, pack release, Minecraft version, Forge build, and any config changes.
- Periodically restore a copy to a separate test folder so you know the backup is usable.
Upgrade conservatively
Read the release notes for the pack version you intend to use and check whether it requires a new map. Copy the entire server folder or, at minimum, the world, mods, configs, and launch settings before replacing anything. Upgrade the server and all clients as one planned change; do not let a single player update first and then attempt to connect to the old installation.

Limit administrative access
Give operator privileges only to trusted players, keep the server console private, and avoid sharing router credentials. Do not disable the operating-system firewall to solve a connection problem. A narrow Java rule and one forwarded game port are safer and easier to audit than an open machine.
A practical launch checklist
- Java Edition 1.12.2 is installed on the host and every client.
- The server and all clients use the same Forge 1.12.2 build.
- The chosen Mustard Virus release is appropriate for the world, with a new map when the release requires one.
- The server-compatible
mods, config, map, and override files are in the clean server folder. - The EULA has been accepted in
eula.txt. - The server starts without missing-dependency, duplicate-mod, or repeated out-of-memory errors.
- A local connection succeeds before remote access is attempted.
- Java is allowed through the host firewall and TCP 25565 is forwarded to a stable private address for internet play.
- OptiFine and shader files remain client-side and optional.
- A dated world backup exists before players begin a long-term save.
Once those checks pass, share the correct address with friends and keep the server folder, logs, and backups organized. The pack’s survival design makes reliable saves especially important: the infected are attracted to light, sound, and players, and sunlight no longer stops them.
