What you need before installing
MC Eternal 2 is a large, hybrid pack combining quests, exploration, magic, technology, and many world systems. It is published for Minecraft 1.20.1 on Forge. A vanilla server, a Fabric server, or a different Minecraft version will not load the pack correctly.
- A licensed Minecraft Java Edition account for each player. Authentication failures commonly occur when someone is not signed in with a legitimate Java account.
- A 64-bit Java 17 installation. The compatibility guidance for Minecraft 1.18 through 1.20.4 places this pack’s 1.20.1 release in the Java 17 range.
- The exact MC Eternal 2 server-pack release used by the clients. The current listed file is [MCE2]-Server-Pack-1.3.zip.
- A dedicated directory on a machine that can remain powered on while people play.
- Enough memory and CPU capacity for Forge, mods, loaded chunks, terrain generation, and simultaneous players.
- For internet play, router access for port forwarding or a suitable tunnel, plus firewall access for the server process.
The pack’s author describes MC Eternal 2 as heavy and recommends at least 16 GB of total system RAM, with 8–10 GB allocated to the client. That is client guidance, not an official server minimum. A server needs additional memory for the world and connected players, so do not assume that a computer which barely runs the client will host smoothly.

Self-hosting or managed hosting?
You can run the files yourself or let a managed provider deploy the matching server pack. Self-hosting gives you control over files, backups, and network configuration. Managed hosting removes most installation and router work but adds a monthly charge and provider limits.

Those are provider plan descriptions, not guaranteed performance thresholds. A heavy modpack can need a larger tier even with fewer players because memory use depends on the mod count, loaded chunks, automation, and exploration. Prices and availability can change, so verify the current amount and region at checkout. The documented workflow is in the CurseForge app: select Minecraft, open Servers, choose MC Eternal 2, select the exact server-pack file, choose a plan and region, set a server name, and purchase. Provisioning is performed by Shockbyte and billing by Tebex; the resulting panel exposes console, files, restart, and backup controls.
Download the correct MC Eternal 2 server pack
Use the modpack’s CurseForge Files page and download the server pack that exactly matches the release installed by every player. Do not create a server by copying the entire client mods folder. Client installations often contain client-only mods that can stop a dedicated server from starting.
Check the release before downloading
- Open the MC Eternal 2 project in CurseForge and go to Files.
- Identify the release your players have installed. The current listed server archive is [MCE2]-Server-Pack-1.3.zip, released September 22, 2026.
- Download that server archive, or the server-pack archive belonging to the exact release your clients use.
- Keep the archive available when updating later; clients and server must move to the new release together.
A download that is merely “close” to the client version is not sufficient. Mod versions, Forge metadata, scripts, and configuration can change between pack releases.

Install Java 17 and verify it
Install a 64-bit distribution of Java 17 on the host machine. Open a terminal or command prompt and run:

If it reports Java 8, Java 11, Java 21, or a 32-bit runtime, correct the installation or the system path before launching the pack. Multiple Java installations are common; the java -version result is the runtime that the included start script will normally find.
Do not rely on the Java bundled with a third-party launcher unless that launcher is also the runtime used by the dedicated server. A separate server machine should have its own 64-bit Java 17 installation and a predictable system path.
Install the server on your own machine
1. Create a dedicated directory
Create a new folder used only for MC Eternal 2, such as MC-Eternal-2-Server. Avoid placing it inside a client instance or a temporary downloads folder. The directory will contain the world, configuration, logs, scripts, libraries, and server settings, so it needs free disk space and permission for Java to create files.
2. Extract the archive
Extract [MCE2]-Server-Pack-1.3.zip into the server directory. CurseForge’s modded-server procedure is to unzip the server pack and run its included start file. Preserve the directory structure created by the archive; do not move individual libraries or mods into unrelated folders.

3. Start it once
Run the start file included in the extracted pack. The first launch normally creates the initial files and then stops because the Minecraft EULA has not yet been accepted. Let that first run finish so the directory is populated.
4. Accept the EULA
Open eula.txt in the server directory. Change:
eula=falseto:
eula=trueSave the file, then run the included start file again. If the file is recreated or the server still stops immediately, check that the edit was saved in the same directory from which the start script is running.
5. Watch the console for a completed startup
Keep the console visible during the second launch. A successful startup leaves the server process running and provides a console in which commands can be entered. The first world creation can take significantly longer than later starts, especially while terrain and structures are generated.
Keep clients and server synchronized
Every player should use Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge, and the same MC Eternal 2 release as the server. A mismatch can produce missing-mod messages, registry errors, rejected connections, or a crash during startup.
- Record the exact pack release before inviting players.
- When updating, stop the server and back up the world and configuration first.
- Install the new server-pack release, then update every player’s client to that same release.
- Do not mix a newer client with an older server or vice versa.
- Do not add client-only mods to the server’s
modsfolder. If the server begins crashing after a mod change, remove the newly added client-only files and test again.
The official server pack is curated for dedicated-server use. Copying every file from a working client can introduce rendering, menu, or other client-side components that a server cannot load.

Plan RAM, CPU, and storage
There is no official server-only RAM minimum in the available guidance. Plan from the workload rather than a single headline number:
- Memory: reserve space for Forge, mod state, loaded chunks, entities, world generation, and all concurrent players. Leave memory for the operating system and background services instead of assigning every gigabyte to Java.
- CPU: use a modern processor where possible. Exploration, chunk generation, automation, and many entities can create CPU spikes even when average usage looks low.
- Storage: use an SSD where possible. World saves, region files, logs, and backups perform better on fast storage than on an old mechanical drive.
- Network: stable upstream bandwidth matters when several players are connected, especially while new chunks are being sent.
The pack’s 16 GB total-RAM and 8–10 GB client recommendation is a useful warning about its weight, not a promise that assigning 8 GB to a server will support a particular player count. Monitor memory and tick behavior during real exploration and automation rather than choosing a number solely from a hosting advert.
Reduce first-visit world-generation lag
MC Eternal 2 includes the Chunky mod. Use it to pre-generate the area where your group expects to play before inviting everyone to explore in different directions. Pre-generation moves much of the expensive terrain work to a controlled period, reducing the chance that several players trigger simultaneous chunk creation during a busy session. It also consumes CPU, memory, storage, and time while it runs, so perform it when no one is relying on the server.
Configure access and security
Online authentication
Keep online-mode=true unless you have a specific, well-understood reason to change it. Online mode authenticates players with Minecraft’s account services and helps prevent unauthenticated names from joining. Players should sign in with legitimate Java accounts.
Whitelist private servers
If only invited friends should join, enable white-list=true and add approved player names through the server console. A whitelist is an access-control layer, not a replacement for account authentication or a firewall.

Protect the host
- Do not publish your home IP address casually. Share connection details only with intended players.
- Allow the Java server process through the host firewall, but do not disable the firewall globally as a shortcut.
- Keep the server machine and Java installation patched.
- Back up the world before changing mods, Forge, or configuration.
- Use the hosting panel’s backup controls if you choose managed hosting, and periodically verify that a backup can actually be restored.
Make the server reachable
Players on the same home network
Players connected to the same LAN can join using the host machine’s local IP address and the server port. The standard Minecraft port is 25565. A local connection does not require public port forwarding, but the host firewall must still permit the server.

Players outside your home
- Give the host machine a dependable local address, using your router’s address-reservation feature or another method appropriate to your network.
- Forward router port 25565 to that machine’s local address. The router’s interface may label this as port forwarding, NAT, or a virtual server.
- Allow the server process through the operating system firewall.
- Confirm that the server is running before testing from outside the home network.
- Give remote players your public address and port. Do not give them the private LAN address, which is usable only inside your network.
Testing from a phone on cellular data or asking a friend outside your home network is more reliable than testing your public address from inside the same LAN, because some routers do not support hairpin NAT.
When port forwarding is unavailable
A tunnel can expose the server without changing the router. Tunneling tools differ in latency, stability, traffic limits, and account requirements; the networking guidance notes that some are less stable than direct forwarding. Use a reputable service, keep authentication and whitelist settings enabled, and give players the tunnel address and port it provides.
Managed MC Eternal 2 hosting workflow
Managed hosting is useful when the host machine cannot stay online, the router is controlled by an internet provider, or you do not want to maintain Java and firewall settings. In the CurseForge workflow, choose Minecraft, open Servers, select MC Eternal 2, and select the exact server-pack file that matches the clients. Choose a region and plan, enter a server name, and complete purchase.
The documented service provisions the server through Shockbyte and handles billing through Tebex. After provisioning, the control panel provides a console, file access, restart controls, and backups. Because the provider deploys the matching server pack, you avoid manually uploading files and normally do not need home-router port forwarding.
Choose a plan with headroom. The listed player bands are not performance guarantees, and MC Eternal 2 can outgrow a tier with fewer players when many chunks, machines, entities, or dimensions are active. Upgrade before the server repeatedly stalls or exhausts memory rather than waiting for world corruption or failed starts.
Troubleshoot the failures you are most likely to see

Updating without losing the world
- Tell players to stop joining and shut the server down cleanly.
- Make a complete copy of the world directory, configuration, scripts, and any server-specific settings.
- Confirm the target MC Eternal 2 release and download its matching server pack.
- Install or replace the server files according to the pack’s instructions, preserving the backup and checking whether custom configuration files should be retained.
- Update every client to the same release before reopening the server to the group.
- Start the server and watch the console for registry, dependency, or migration errors before anyone makes new progress.
Never treat a pack update as a routine file overwrite when the world contains valuable builds. A backup gives you a recovery point if a mod removal, registry change, or failed migration makes the world unusable.
