How to Host a Horror Craft Modpack Server in Minecraft (Java Edition)

To host a horror modpack server, first match the pack’s Minecraft version, mod loader, and Java requirement. Then install the author’s server distribution—not the client download—into a clean server folder, accept the EULA, set memory limits, configure access, and test with a client using the identical pack. For the Horror+ example, the dedicated Horror+ Server pack is for Java Edition 1.20.1 on Fabric; its client pack is a different download.

What “Horror Craft modpack server” means

“Horror Craft” can describe any Minecraft horror-themed modpack rather than one universal technical package. A server cannot be selected by theme alone. Every installation depends on four compatibility decisions:

  • Edition: Java Edition and Bedrock Edition use different server software and mod ecosystems. The packs covered here are Java Edition packs.
  • Minecraft version: A 1.20.1 server is not interchangeable with a 1.19.2 or 1.20.4 installation.
  • Mod loader: Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, and Quilt have separate libraries and are not interchangeable.
  • Java runtime: Use the Java version specified by the pack’s documentation and loader.

For a concrete reference, Horror+ Server targets Java Edition 1.20.1 on Fabric. Inside the Darkness – Horror lists Forge support for Minecraft 1.20.1 and 1.19.2. Those are different server targets even though both are horror packs.

Check compatibility before downloading anything

Make a four-line compatibility record

Write down the following from the pack’s project page or included readme:

  1. Modpack name and exact release version.
  2. Minecraft version.
  3. Loader name and version.
  4. Required Java version.

Keep this record beside the server files. When a player receives a “missing mods,” “wrong version,” or registry-mismatch error, compare this record with the client’s profile before replacing files.

Server pack versus client pack

A client pack contains the files needed to launch the game and join a server. A server pack is prepared for dedicated-server use and normally includes the server-compatible mods, config, startup files, and any required data or scripts. They are not automatically the same archive.

The Horror+ documentation makes the distinction explicit: its dedicated Horror+ Server download is the one intended for hosting, while the ordinary Horror+ project is the client distribution. If you use Modrinth Hosting, the project states that you must select the Horror+ Server pack rather than the client pack. Installing the client archive on a server can leave you with client-only mods, missing startup files, or a server that stops during loading.

Do not assume every mod must be installed on both sides

Most complete modpacks require clients to use the same pack and version as the server. Individual exceptions exist. For example, the Server-Side Horror project says players do not need to install anything for that specific mod. That behavior belongs to that mod’s design; it is not a rule for horror modpacks generally. Follow the pack author’s manifest and server instructions.

Choose between self-hosting and a managed server

Self-host from your own computer

Self-hosting has no separate hosting bill, but your computer, electricity, storage, network connection, firewall, and router become the hosting infrastructure. The machine must remain powered and connected whenever friends want to play. You also handle Java updates, backups, crash recovery, and port forwarding.

The Horror+ server documentation warns that a host with less than 16 GB of system RAM, a weak CPU, or poor connectivity may experience lag or crashes. That is a warning about the whole computer, not a promise that assigning 16 GB to Minecraft is correct. Leave memory for the operating system and other services.

Use managed hosting

A managed host keeps the service online in a data center and provides a control panel instead of requiring you to expose a home network. Modrinth Hosting integrates modpack installation and supports Fabric, Forge, Quilt, and NeoForge. Its published plans include 4 GB, 6 GB, and 8 GB tiers.

Managed hosting reduces router and firewall work, but it adds a recurring fee and plan limits. Confirm that the provider offers your exact Minecraft version, loader, and modpack before paying. For Horror+, the project instructions identify 6 GB as the recommended minimum when using Modrinth Hosting; this is a project recommendation, not an independently audited performance guarantee.

Consideration Self-hosted PC Managed host
Cost model No separate hosting fee; you supply hardware, electricity, storage, and bandwidth. Monthly fee; published Modrinth tiers are 4 GB, 6 GB, and 8 GB.
Initial setup Install the pack, Java, EULA, firewall rules, router access, and backup process. Panel-based setup with integrated modpack installation.
Availability Online only while your computer and internet connection are available. Designed for continuous access, subject to the plan and provider.
Control Direct access to files, JVM settings, logs, and backups. Convenient controls, with panel and plan restrictions.
Best fit Owners comfortable administering an always-on computer and network. Groups that want the shortest route to a shared server.

Prepare the host computer

Hardware and storage

Horror mods often add custom entities, world-generation features, sounds, structures, and scripts. CPU performance affects how quickly the server can advance game ticks and generate terrain; RAM provides working space for the game and its loaded chunks; storage affects startup, saving, and world-generation operations. An SSD is preferable for a busy world, although the published guidance does not set a universal SSD requirement.

Inside the Darkness separately recommends 16 GB of system RAM with 6–8 GB allocated to the game. Treat that as the project’s recommendation for its pack, not as a formula that applies to every horror pack or player count.

Install the required Java runtime

Install the Java version named by the pack or loader. Verify the active runtime before launching by running java -version in a terminal or command prompt. If the output shows an unexpected major version, correct the system path or use the full path to the required Java executable in the startup configuration.

Do not mix a loader’s server files with a different Java requirement simply because another modpack starts successfully on that machine. A Java mismatch can produce an immediate startup error or less obvious failures while loading mods.

Install a horror modpack server step by step

1. Lock the exact matrix

Record the Minecraft release, loader, loader version, Java requirement, and pack release. For Horror+ Server, that record begins with Java Edition 1.20.1 and Fabric. For Inside the Darkness, select the listed Forge release—1.20.1 or 1.19.2—rather than assuming the newer one is compatible.

2. Download the author-provided server distribution

Prefer a download labelled server, dedicated server, or server pack. If the project offers a pre-configured server archive, use it first. Horror+ documents three supported routes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A pre-configured server, which is the recommended route.
  • The server modpack copied into an existing Fabric server directory.
  • The pack’s mods folder copied into that Fabric server directory.

Extract the distribution into a new, dedicated folder rather than into an existing vanilla world or another modpack. Keep the supplied mods, config, and startup files together. Do not merge configuration files from unrelated packs.

3. Run the server once to generate files

Use the startup script or server command supplied with the distribution. The first run commonly creates files such as eula.txt, world data, logs, and configuration folders. Stop the process after it has generated its initial files so you can inspect the directory before inviting anyone.

Open eula.txt, read the Minecraft EULA, and change the acceptance setting to true only if you agree to it. A server will not complete startup while the EULA remains unaccepted.

4. Set memory limits deliberately

Edit the supplied startup configuration to set the Java heap limits. Use a sensible allocation for the pack and leave enough RAM for the operating system, file cache, and any other services on the computer. Allocating every gigabyte to Minecraft can make the host less stable rather than faster.

The available project guidance gives boundaries, not a universal player-count calculator: Horror+ warns about a host with less than 16 GB of total RAM; Inside the Darkness recommends 6–8 GB allocated with 16 GB system RAM; and Horror+ identifies 6 GB as its Modrinth Hosting recommendation. Start within the pack’s guidance, then observe memory use and tick performance with your real player group.

5. Start without changing content files

Launch the server again and read the console from top to bottom. A successful start should load the selected loader, enumerate the expected mods, create or open a world, and report that the server is ready for connections. Stop immediately if the log names a missing dependency, wrong loader, incompatible Minecraft version, or failed mixin. Fix the compatibility issue rather than deleting random mods.

6. Create a safe test world

Before public play, make a backup of the generated world and configuration folder. World-generation and content mods can make a world dependent on their presence; removing them later may delete blocks, entities, or dimensions. Keep a dated copy outside the live server directory so a failed update cannot overwrite the only backup.

Configure network access

Local testing

Join from the same home network first. Use the server computer’s local address and the game’s multiplayer screen. A local test isolates mod and loader problems from router and internet problems.

Allowing friends outside your home

For outside players, reserve a stable local address for the server computer, allow the server process through the operating system firewall, and configure the router to forward the Minecraft server port to that computer. Router menus vary by manufacturer, so record the rule, the destination address, and the date you created it. Do not publish your home address in a public chat; send connection details privately to the people you trust.

Enable the server whitelist and add players by their Minecraft names. A whitelist limits who can join even if someone discovers the address. Use operator privileges sparingly and remove them from accounts that do not need administrative commands.

Why managed hosting changes this step

With a managed provider, the server runs outside your home network, so you generally do not configure inbound router forwarding. The provider supplies the public address and panel controls, while you still remain responsible for selecting the correct pack, protecting access, and maintaining backups.

Test a client before inviting the group

  1. Install the exact Minecraft version recorded for the server.
  2. Install the same loader and loader version.
  3. Install the same modpack release, using the client distribution when the author provides separate client and server downloads.
  4. Launch once and confirm that the client reaches the main menu without a loader error.
  5. Join locally first. If that works, have a second player test from outside the home network.

If the connection fails, compare the client and server manifests. Check for a missing mod, an extra client-only mod copied to the server, a different configuration file, or a version mismatch. Registry errors usually indicate that the two sides disagree about content or versions; replacing files at random can make diagnosis harder.

Capacity: how much RAM and CPU do you need?

No source cited here publishes a universal player-count formula, and horror packs vary substantially in world generation and entity load. Use the following published figures as starting points, then measure the running server with your actual world and players.

Figure What it describes How to interpret it
Less than 16 GB RAM Horror+ warning for a self-hosted computer. Below this total system memory, the project warns of possible lag or crashes when combined with a weak CPU or poor connectivity.
6 GB RAM Horror+ recommendation for Modrinth Hosting. A project recommendation for that hosting route, not a guaranteed capacity for every group.
4 GB, 6 GB, and 8 GB Published Modrinth Hosting plan tiers. Available plan sizes; choose only after checking the pack’s loader and version support.
16 GB system RAM with 6–8 GB allocated Inside the Darkness recommendation. Leaves memory for the operating system while assigning a substantial heap to that pack.

Watch server tick time, console warnings, heap usage, and how long new chunks take to generate. Add players gradually. If performance deteriorates only during exploration, world generation may be the bottleneck; if it remains poor while nobody explores, inspect CPU load, entity counts, and other processes.

Backups, updates, and routine administration

Back up before every change

Stop the server cleanly, then copy the world, mods, config, and important server settings to storage outside the live directory. Keep more than one dated backup. A backup made while files are still being written can be incomplete, so do not simply copy a live world during heavy activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Update in a controlled order

Read the pack’s change notes and verify that the new release keeps the same Minecraft version and loader, or plan a deliberate migration if it does not. Back up first, update the server distribution, start it once with no players, and inspect the log. Only then update clients and allow the group to join. Never assume that a client update can be applied independently of the server.

Keep access and privileges narrow

Use a whitelist, strong account security, and the smallest practical operator list. Review who can access the host files or management panel. If a player leaves the group, remove their whitelist entry and any elevated permissions.

Troubleshooting common failures

The server closes immediately

  • Check java -version and compare it with the pack’s required Java release.
  • Confirm that the loader matches the pack; Fabric files cannot be substituted for Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt files.
  • Read the first “caused by” or dependency error in the log rather than focusing on the final shutdown line.
  • Restore the original server distribution if you merged files from another pack.

Players see missing mods or registry mismatches

  • Compare Minecraft version, loader, pack release, and mod lists on both sides.
  • Use the author’s server pack and the matching client pack, not two similarly named downloads.
  • Remove a client-only mod from the server only when the pack documentation identifies it as client-only.
  • Restore the last known-good backup if a configuration change altered world content.

Friends cannot connect, but local joining works

  • Verify that the server is running and listening on the expected port.
  • Check the operating system firewall and router forwarding rule.
  • Confirm that the forwarding rule points to the server computer’s current reserved local address.
  • Test from a genuinely external connection; a second device on the same home network does not prove internet reachability.

The server lags or crashes under load

  • Check whether total system RAM is below the project’s guidance and whether other applications are consuming memory.
  • Inspect CPU usage during world generation and busy scenes.
  • Reduce simultaneous exploration and add players gradually while monitoring tick performance.
  • Use a managed plan with more memory only after confirming that RAM, rather than CPU or network quality, is the limiting resource.

Which route should you choose?

Choose self-hosting when you already have an adequately powerful, always-on computer, can administer Java and firewall settings, and want complete file and JVM control without a hosting bill. Choose managed hosting when your group needs reliable availability, you would rather avoid router configuration, or the host computer and home connection are not dependable.

Whichever route you choose, the non-negotiable step is compatibility: the server, every client, and every required dependency must agree on Minecraft version, loader, and pack release. Once that matrix is correct, the remaining work is ordinary server administration—EULA acceptance, memory sizing, access control, backups, and testing.
