The pack’s former official server is no longer available: v1.0.1 added one, but the v2.0.0 release notes say it was removed after closing. You therefore need to host the world yourself or use a third-party provider.

What you need to host
The Fungal Infection is a Forge modpack built around cooperative base defense against an evolving Cordyceps infection. CurseForge lists The Fungal Infection v2.1.0 as the current main file for Minecraft 1.20.1, uploaded March 22, 2026, and lists a separate matching server-pack download.
| Item | Required value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Modpack | The Fungal Infection | Co-Op Base Defense | Clients and server must use the same pack. |
| Current release | v2.1.0 | Use this unless an existing world must remain on another pinned release. |
| Minecraft | 1.20.1 | A different Minecraft version will not load the same Forge setup. |
| Mod loader | Forge | Install the Forge build required by the selected pack release. |
| Server memory | 6 GB recommended for four players | This is the pack author’s starting recommendation, not a guaranteed limit. |
| Server files | “Server Pack for v2.1.0” | The server pack contains the server-side files intended for deployment. |
CurseForge displayed 410,770 project downloads and 426,072 downloads on its files listing in separate 2026 captures. Those counters are page-specific snapshots, not a measure of active servers or current player capacity.

Choose self-hosting or managed hosting
Both approaches can run the same pack. The choice is mainly about who handles networking, maintenance and availability.
| Consideration | Self-hosted server | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring cost | No hosting subscription; you provide the computer, electricity and internet connection. | Monthly charge; current price and included resources depend on the plan. |
| Initial setup | You install Java, Forge and the server pack, then configure the firewall and router. | Usually a control-panel deployment or one-click installer. |
| Uptime | Your PC and connection must stay on and reachable. | The provider supplies a data-center machine and network connection. |
| Backups | You design and test your own backup routine. | Backup frequency and retention vary by provider and plan. |
| Network protection | You are responsible for firewall rules and exposure of the Minecraft port. | Some providers advertise DDoS protection; confirm what is actually included. |
| Version control | Full control over Forge, mods and configuration files. | Confirm that the panel lets you pin Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge and v2.1.0. |
| Latency | Depends on the host computer’s location and upload connection. | Choose a region close to the players and verify the available locations. |
Managed providers that advertise this pack
Several hosts publicly advertise support for The Fungal Infection or its Forge 1.20.1 files. Treat these as availability leads rather than endorsements, and check the live plan page before paying.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- GhostCap advertises one-click installation, instant setup, DDoS protection and unlimited slots. A displayed starting price was $16.99 per month; verify the current price, RAM allocation, storage and renewal terms.
- Game Host Bros advertises support for the Forge 1.20.1 pack, instant setup, DDoS protection and 24/7 support. Confirm current plan limits and whether the advertised support applies to v2.1.0.
- mTxServ advertises one-click deployment and says a server can be online within minutes. Check its current regions, backup policy, memory options and available pack version.
No provider advertisement establishes that the pack author officially endorses that company. Select a host for its current resources, location and controls, not merely because its catalog contains the pack name.
Before you install: compatibility checklist
Most failed modded-server connections are version mismatches. Decide the exact release first, then make every installation match it.
- Select The Fungal Infection v2.1.0 for Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge in the CurseForge launcher.
- Have every player install that same profile, including the same mod versions and configuration files where the pack supplies them.
- Download the matching Server Pack for v2.1.0, not a server archive for an earlier release.
- Keep the server in its own directory, separate from a player’s client installation and worlds.
- Reserve enough disk space for the initial world, region files, logs and at least one backup.
- Confirm that the computer or hosting plan can allocate the author’s starting point of 6 GB for four players, with additional headroom if the group grows or you add mods.
How to self-host step by step
1. Pin the pack release
Open the pack’s CurseForge project and select v2.1.0 under the Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge files. Record that version before downloading anything. If you already have a world on another release, do not update it casually; follow the migration guidance later in this article.

2. Download the server pack
In the project’s Minecraft 1.20 server-pack section, download the archive labeled for v2.1.0. Do not assume that copying a client’s mods folder produces a complete server. The separate server pack is the intended starting point and preserves the pack’s server-side layout.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
3. Install the Forge server required by the pack
Install the Forge server build specified for Minecraft 1.20.1 and the selected pack release. Forge’s installer and Java requirements can change, so use the requirements documented for your operating system and that Forge build rather than copying a command from an unrelated version. Keep the Forge server launcher and all server files in the dedicated server directory.
4. Extract the archive without flattening it
Extract the server-pack archive into the Forge server directory and preserve its folder structure. A common mistake is creating an extra nested folder, leaving the launcher unable to find the expected mods, config or other directories. After extraction, inspect the top level and confirm that the pack’s folders are alongside the Forge server files.
5. Review configuration before first play
Read the included configuration files and any README supplied with the pack. Check world settings, server properties, difficulty, view distance and gameplay rules before creating a permanent world. Avoid deleting configuration files to “make the server start”; a missing file can produce a different setup from the one tested by the pack author.
6. Launch once, accept the EULA, then launch again
Start the Forge server with the launcher or startup method documented for your operating system. The first run normally creates files and stops because the Minecraft EULA has not been accepted. Read Mojang’s EULA, then change only the EULA setting to eula=true if you agree. Launch again and wait for the console to report that the server has finished loading. Do not expose a half-configured server to the internet.

7. Make the server reachable
For a home server, allow the Java or Forge server process through the operating system’s firewall and forward the Minecraft port from your router to the host computer’s local address. The exact screens and commands differ between Windows, macOS, Linux and router models, so follow documentation for your platform. Do not publish a guessed port, firewall command or Java startup line as though it were universal.
Give friends the public address shown by your network setup, while players on the same home network may be able to use the host computer’s local address. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary port forwarding may not work; in that case, use a managed host or a networking method appropriate to your connection.
8. Test with one player before inviting everyone
Join from a client using the exact v2.1.0 profile. Test movement, chunk loading, the infection mechanics and a server restart. Then have another player connect from outside the host’s local network. This separates modpack problems from firewall or router problems.
9. Create a backup before changing anything
Stop the server cleanly, copy the world directory and retain the copy outside the live server folder. Keep dated backups before changing the pack version, Forge build, configuration or major mods. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption, so periodically test that a copy can be opened on a separate server directory.
How to deploy through a managed host
- Choose a provider and a region near the players. Compare allocated RAM, CPU share, storage, backup retention, DDoS protection, support hours and cancellation terms.
- Use the provider’s modpack or Forge installer to select Minecraft 1.20.1 and The Fungal Infection v2.1.0. If the panel offers only a generic Forge installation, upload the matching server-pack archive instead.
- Confirm the panel shows the required memory allocation. The author recommends 6 GB for four players; a small plan that technically starts but constantly runs out of memory is not equivalent.
- Check the generated file tree and confirm that the server pack, Forge files,
modsandconfigdirectories are present. - Accept the EULA through the host’s documented control-panel setting, start the server and wait for the first complete load.
- Set a whitelist or other access control before sharing the address. Use the host’s backup tool to create a restore point before inviting the group.
- Connect with the identical client profile and verify that the host allows you to pin the pack version rather than silently updating it.
“One-click” changes the installation interface, not the compatibility rule. A host can automate deployment, but all clients still need the same Minecraft, Forge and modpack versions.

How much RAM does it need?
The pack author’s explicit recommendation is 6 GB of server RAM for four players. Use that as a starting allocation, not a promise that every world, render distance and add-on will fit comfortably.
- Leave headroom when more than four players will be online together.
- Expect higher memory pressure from large view or simulation distances, rapid exploration that generates new chunks, and additional mods.
- Watch the server console and host metrics during a busy session instead of judging capacity from the number of installed mods alone.
- Increase memory only if the machine has enough total RAM for the operating system and other services; assigning nearly all physical memory to Java can make the whole computer unstable.
- Reduce view distance, simulation distance or unnecessary add-ons before treating every lag spike as a need for more RAM.
The v2.0.0 release notes claim “up to 500% better server performance.” That is the developer’s release-note statement, not an independent benchmark, and it does not replace measuring your own server under your group’s workload.

Version upgrades and existing worlds
The v2.0.0 notes say that many mods changed and warn that old worlds are used at the owner’s risk. They also record the removal of the former official server. Because a mod change can alter blocks, entities or world-generation data, a new v2.1.0 world is the least ambiguous choice for a new group.
If you are upgrading an established world:
- Stop the old server and make at least one complete, restorable backup.
- Copy that backup to a separate directory and test it without touching the original.
- Install v2.1.0 in a new server directory rather than overwriting the old installation.
- Use the new server pack and matching Forge files; do not mix old and new
modsorconfigfolders unless the pack documentation specifically requires it. - Open the copied world and inspect important bases, inventories and progression before allowing the group to continue.
- Keep the original server untouched until the migration has been accepted by all players.
Troubleshooting common failures
“Incompatible version” or a missing-mod screen
Compare the client and server line by line: Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge build, pack release and mod files. Reinstall the v2.1.0 client profile rather than adding random replacement mods. A client on a newer or older pack release cannot reliably join a v2.1.0 server.
The server stops during startup
Read the first error in the log, not only the final shutdown line. Check that the correct Java runtime is being used for the Forge build, that the server pack was extracted without an extra directory level, and that no files from another Minecraft version are present. Restore the clean server-pack copy if configuration edits caused the failure.

Players on the internet cannot connect
Test locally first. If local players can join but remote players cannot, check the operating-system firewall, router forwarding target, host computer’s local address and whether the internet connection permits inbound connections. A managed host should display the correct address and port in its panel; contact its support team if that endpoint is not reachable.
Lag, timeouts or out-of-memory errors
Check memory and CPU usage while several players explore simultaneously. Confirm that at least the recommended 6 GB is allocated for four players, then reduce view or simulation distance and remove unneeded add-ons. If the machine is swapping or the host throttles CPU, more Java memory alone will not solve the bottleneck.
A world appears damaged after an update
Stop immediately and preserve the current files. Restore the pre-upgrade backup in the original pack version, then test the migration on a copy. Do not repeatedly launch a damaged world across different modpack versions; each launch can change files and make diagnosis harder.
Keeping the server reliable
- Schedule regular world backups and retain more than one generation.
- Announce pack or Forge changes before applying them, and require every player to update together.
- Use a whitelist or equivalent access control for a private co-op world.
- Monitor disk space because world and log files grow over time.
- Restart deliberately when applying updates, and wait for a clean shutdown before replacing files.
- Record the exact Minecraft, Forge and modpack versions in a shared note so nobody updates from memory.
- For a home server, use a wired connection and prevent the host computer from sleeping during play sessions.
Was there an official Fungal Infection server?
Yes, temporarily. Version 1.0.1 added an official server, but the v2.0.0 changelog says, “Removed the (now closed) official server.” That history explains why current players do not receive a permanent official address. The practical options are a self-hosted server using the supplied server pack or a managed host that currently supports the pack.
