How to Host a Feed the Factory Modpack Server (Minecraft 1.12.2)

The reliable way to host Feed the Factory is to use the matching CurseForge server pack, run it from a dedicated folder, accept Minecraft’s EULA, and keep the supplied start process running. Feed the Factory is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.12.2, so every player must install the same release and Forge environment as the server.

For players in your home, connect with localhost or the host computer’s LAN address. For friends on the internet, forward the configured Minecraft port from your router to the host computer and give them the host’s public IPv4 address. Keep online-mode=true; for a private group, also enable white-list=true.

What Feed the Factory is and which files you need

Feed the Factory is a Vnator modpack built around Factorio-style automation and progression. CurseForge categorizes it as Tech, Quests, and Small / Light, and lists Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge as its game environment. The project page showed 155,207 downloads when checked in 2026; that number is a changing snapshot rather than a permanent total. Vnator’s project description also claims more than 300 hours of development and over 3,500 lines of CraftTweaker scripts, figures attributed to the author in 2022 rather than independently audited measurements.

Use a server pack, not an improvised collection of individual mods. CurseForge’s own guidance is: “If you are trying to play a popular modpack, try the server pack of this modpack if there is one.” The server pack supplies the files and launch arrangement intended for a dedicated server.

Choose one release before doing anything else

The CurseForge files page lists Feed the Factory 1.0 Server.zip as the release server pack for Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge. It also lists separate files for Feed the Factory 1.5.0 Alpha. These are different releases. Pick one and use that same release on the server and every client.

Choice Use it when Do not do this
Feed the Factory 1.0 Server.zip You want the listed release server pack. Do not pair it with an alpha client profile.
Feed the Factory 1.5.0 Alpha files Your entire group deliberately chooses the alpha build. Do not copy alpha files into a 1.0 release server.

When a client and server differ, the usual symptoms are a Forge or mod-list mismatch during login, missing registry entries, or a disconnect before the world loads. Treat the release number as part of the server address: everyone needs to agree on it before troubleshooting networking.

Self-hosting or managed hosting?

Self-hosting costs no hosting subscription, but one computer must run the server whenever people want to play. Managed hosting removes most router and uptime work, but you pay monthly and must confirm that the provider really supports this older Forge pack. Compare the practical differences before downloading anything.

Consideration Self-hosted computer Managed service
Upfront and recurring cost No provider fee; you supply the computer, electricity, and connection. Recurring subscription; the documented CurseForge tiers are listed below.
Availability The host machine and server process must stay online. The provider operates the machine, subject to its plan and maintenance.
Networking You handle the LAN address, firewall, and router port forwarding for remote friends. The provider normally supplies a public endpoint, but you still configure the server and access rules.
Files and worlds Direct control of mods, configs, scripts, saves, and logs. Control depends on the panel and plan; verify that you can download and restore the world.
Backups and restore You must make and test your own copies. Ask whether automated backups are included, how often they run, and how restoration works.
Support You diagnose Forge, Java, files, and networking yourself. Provider support may cover the machine, not modpack-specific errors.
1.12.2 Forge compatibility You can run the supplied pack locally if the launch environment works. Compatibility must be confirmed for this exact pack and version before payment.
Getting matching files to friends You distribute the same client release yourself. A panel may install a server pack, but players still need matching client files.

What the documented hosted tiers mean

CurseForge’s hosted-server documentation describes selecting a matching server pack, choosing a plan and region, and provisioning through Shockbyte, with billing handled through Tebex. The documented prices are:

RAM Shared CPUs Listed price
4 GB 2 shared CPUs $12 per month
8 GB 3 shared CPUs $24 per month
12 GB 4 shared CPUs $36 per month

Those figures are the tiers documented by CurseForge Support in 2026, not a Feed the Factory performance recommendation. The same documentation says its Join workflow is available only for game versions above 1.20.1. Feed the Factory is listed for 1.12.2, so that workflow does not establish support for this pack. Ask a host, in writing, whether it accepts the Feed the Factory 1.0 server pack (or the specific alpha release you selected), runs Forge 1.12.2, permits the required files, and provides backups before you subscribe.

Set up a self-hosted server step by step

1. Download the matching server pack

  1. Open the Feed the Factory files page on CurseForge.
  2. Select Feed the Factory 1.0 Server.zip for the release setup, or select the complete 1.5.0 Alpha file set only if your group has chosen that alpha.
  3. Record the exact file name and release so every player can install the same client version.

Do not combine a release server ZIP with an alpha mod folder, or copy individual mods from one release into the other. A server pack is intended to be deployed as a unit.

2. Create a dedicated server directory

Create a new folder used only for this server. A short path such as a folder directly under your chosen drive makes scripts and backups easier to manage. Do not extract the pack into your ordinary client installation: separating the server prevents client-only settings, screenshots, and unrelated worlds from being mixed with the dedicated instance.

3. Extract the ZIP without nesting it accidentally

Extract the selected ZIP into the dedicated folder. After extraction, the supplied start file and the server files should be in the folder you intend to run. If extraction creates an extra folder inside the folder you opened, enter that inner folder before launching; otherwise a script may fail because it cannot find its libraries or configuration.

4. Run the supplied start file

Use the start file included with the pack rather than inventing a different command line. On the first launch it creates the remaining server files and then stops. That stop is expected: Minecraft cannot complete startup until you accept its EULA.

5. Accept the EULA

  1. Open the newly created eula.txt in the server folder.
  2. Change eula=false to eula=true.
  3. Save the file without changing its name or extension.

Only the operator of the server should make this agreement. If the file keeps returning to eula=false, make sure you edited the copy in the directory used by the start script, not a similarly named file elsewhere.

  • Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!

6. Start the server again

Run the same supplied start file a second time. Leave its console window or terminal process open; closing it stops the server and disconnects everyone. Wait for a normal ready message in the console before asking anyone to join. The first successful start may take longer while Forge and the pack create configuration, scripts, and the initial world.

7. Check the basic server properties

Stop the process cleanly before editing configuration. Open server.properties in the server folder and verify the settings that control identity and access:

  • online-mode=true keeps account authentication enabled.
  • white-list=true restricts joins to names you approve.
  • server-port identifies the port friends must use. Use the value shown in your file; do not assume a different port if you changed it.

Save changes, then start the server again. For a friends-only world, whitelist protection is preferable to handing out an unrestricted address.

8. Add the people who may join

From the server console, run whitelist add PlayerName for each account, without the leading slash. A player who is already in the game can use /whitelist add PlayerName. Names must match the authenticated account spelling. To check the list, use whitelist list in the console or /whitelist list in game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Make a backup before inviting everyone

Stop the server, copy the world folder and important configuration files to a separate location, and label the copy with the date and release. Keep the backup outside the live server directory so a failed update or accidental deletion cannot remove both copies. Test that you can identify which world folder is the current one before relying on a backup.

Give each player the matching client

Every player needs the Feed the Factory client profile for the same release, Minecraft 1.12.2, and Forge environment used by the server. Have players install the release profile from the same project page and avoid adding or removing mods casually. If one person uses the 1.5.0 Alpha files while the server runs 1.0, changing the address will not fix the mismatch; install the same release instead.

Ask players to close the game completely after changing profiles so the launcher does not leave an old Forge process or cached instance running. The server operator should write down the chosen release and distribute that single instruction rather than sending individual mod files from memory.

How players connect

Player location Address to enter What the host must do
Same computer as the server localhost Keep the server process running; no router setup is required.
Another computer on the same home network The host computer’s local/LAN IP address, with the configured server port if the client asks for it. Allow local network traffic and ensure the server is bound to the expected port.
Outside the home network The host’s public IPv4 address and the configured port. Forward that port on the router to the host computer and allow it through the host firewall.

Use the host’s local address only for devices on the same network. Internet players cannot reach a private address such as a typical 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x address from outside your router. Conversely, testing the public address from inside the same home network may fail on routers without hairpin NAT even while outside players can connect; test with a player on another network.

Port forwarding without losing control of the server

  1. Find the host computer’s current LAN IP address and reserve it in the router if your router supports address reservations.
  2. Create a port-forwarding rule for the exact value in server.properties, targeting that LAN address.
  3. Allow the server process through the host operating system’s firewall when prompted, limiting the rule to the required network scope where practical.
  4. Give remote friends the public IPv4 address and port, not the private LAN address.
  5. If your public address changes, tell players the new address or use a reputable dynamic-DNS arrangement you control; do not publish the address in a public forum.

Port forwarding exposes a service to the internet. Keep online-mode=true, keep the whitelist enabled, use strong account security, and remove the forwarding rule when the server is no longer in use.

Troubleshooting the common failures

The server stops immediately after the first launch

Check eula.txt. The first run is expected to stop until eula=false is changed to eula=true. If you already changed it, confirm that the start script is running from the same folder you edited and that the file was saved as plain text.

The start window closes with a missing-file error

Recheck extraction. The start file must be alongside the libraries and configuration supplied by the pack. An extra layer of nested folders, a partially extracted ZIP, or launching a shortcut from another working directory can prevent the script from finding its files. Extract the original server ZIP again into a clean folder and run the included start file there.

A client is rejected for a Forge or mod mismatch

Compare the client’s Minecraft version, Forge version, and Feed the Factory release with the server’s chosen pack. Remove accidental alpha files from a release installation, or deliberately move the whole server and every client to the alpha release. Do not solve a mismatch by copying one or two guessed mods; the pack’s scripts and configuration also matter.

Local connections work, but internet connections fail

First test from another device on the same LAN. If LAN works, verify that the router forwards the configured port to the host’s current LAN address and that the firewall allows it. Confirm that remote players are using the public IPv4 address. If the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT, a router rule may not be reachable from the public internet; ask the ISP or use a managed host that supplies an externally reachable endpoint.

Only whitelisted players can join

That is the intended result when white-list=true. Add each authenticated account with the whitelist command, check the spelling with whitelist list, and restart after editing server.properties. Do not disable online authentication merely to bypass a name mismatch.

The world becomes slow or unstable

No Feed the Factory-specific RAM benchmark is published in the cited setup guidance, so do not treat a generic memory number as a guarantee. Watch the server console and operating-system resource usage, reduce unnecessary background programs, and make backups before changing configuration. If the machine cannot keep the process responsive while players are active, move the same server directory and world to a stronger machine or a host that confirms 1.12.2 Forge support.

Using a managed host responsibly

A managed host can be useful when nobody can leave a computer online or when router administration is impractical. The usual workflow described by CurseForge is to select a matching server pack, choose a region and plan, and let the service provision the instance. You still need to upload or select the exact Feed the Factory pack, configure the whitelist, distribute matching client files, and maintain backups.

For this modpack, compatibility is the deciding question. The documented CurseForge Join workflow is restricted to versions above 1.20.1, while Feed the Factory is a 1.12.2 pack. Therefore, do not assume that a CurseForge-hosted button, a generic “modded Minecraft” plan, or one of the listed RAM tiers will launch it. Before paying, get confirmation that the panel supports Minecraft 1.12.2, Forge for that version, the Feed the Factory server ZIP, custom scripts, and world downloads. Ask what happens if the pack fails to start and whether you can restore your own files without provider intervention.

Routine operation and updates

  • Announce maintenance and stop the server cleanly before copying a world.
  • Keep dated backups outside the live directory and periodically verify that a copy can be opened.
  • Record the exact Feed the Factory release, Forge version, server-port value, and configuration changes.
  • Do not replace a working release with an alpha build while players are using the existing world unless you have a tested backup and the entire group agrees.
  • Review the console after restarts for repeated errors instead of assuming that a window remaining open means the world is healthy.
  • Remove former players from the whitelist and router access when they should no longer connect.

Which hosting choice fits your group?

Choose self-hosting when

  • You can keep a computer online during play sessions.
  • You want complete access to worlds, scripts, configs, and logs.
  • You are comfortable configuring a LAN address, firewall, and router port forwarding for remote players.
  • You prefer to avoid a recurring provider bill and can handle your own backups.

Choose managed hosting when

  • No player’s computer can reliably remain online.
  • Your group values a provider-maintained network and control panel.
  • You have confirmed, before payment, that the provider supports this exact 1.12.2 Forge server pack.
  • The plan includes the backup, restore, file access, and support terms your group needs.

For most small private groups, the safest starting point is a local self-hosted test: deploy the release server pack, connect with localhost, then test a second computer on the LAN. Add port forwarding only after the server and client versions work together. If that test succeeds but uptime or networking is inconvenient, carry the same verified files to a managed provider that explicitly accepts Feed the Factory 1.12.2.
