How to Host a Fear Nightfall Server (Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge Guide)

The simplest way to host Fear Nightfall is to use a Minecraft host that lists the pack, select the Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge release, allocate at least 6 GB of RAM (8 GB is a safer starting point for several players), let the control panel install the files, and give friends the resulting server address. Every player must install the identical Fear Nightfall release, Minecraft version, and compatible Forge loader. Self-hosting is possible, but it requires you to obtain the matching server files, configure Java and Forge, manage backups, and handle firewall, router, uptime, and CGNAT issues yourself.

What Fear Nightfall is

Fear Nightfall is a cooperative horror modpack for Minecraft Java Edition. Hosting listings identify it as a Forge-based pack for Minecraft 1.20.1, created by SHXRKIE. A listing for Fear Nightfall: Remains of Chaos describes a story campaign spread across dimensions with quests, bosses, scripted events, custom mobs, magic, hardcore-survival elements, exploration, shaders, virtual-reality support, and proximity voice chat. Those feature descriptions come from hosting providers rather than an independent technical specification, so treat the exact content and version as release-dependent.

The server and all clients are a matched software set. A vanilla 1.20.1 server, a different Forge build, or a different modpack revision will normally fail to connect even when the server address and port are correct.

Requirements before you start

Server hardware and memory

  • Use a machine or hosting plan with at least 6 GB of allocated RAM. Crafty Servers presents 6 GB as its minimum supported tier for Fear Nightfall.
  • Use 8 GB as a practical starting point when several people will play together, explore new terrain, or load multiple dimensions. Provider guidance describes 8 GB as a more comfortable multiplayer target; it is not a universal official requirement.
  • Leave memory for the operating system and background services if you self-host. Giving every available gigabyte to Java can make the host itself unstable.
  • Use fast storage and a stable network connection. Modded worlds generate many files and can pause while new chunks, structures, and scripted events are created.

Software and player edition

  • Players need Minecraft Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition.
  • The searched hosting listings target Minecraft 1.20.1 with the Forge loader.
  • Install the exact Fear Nightfall release shown by your server host. BoxToPlay lists versions 1.0.10 and 1.0.11 for Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge, illustrating why the revision number matters.
  • Use a launcher that can install Forge modpacks, such as CurseForge or Modrinth, when the pack is available there. The launcher must install the same release selected on the server.

Network access

LAN players can usually connect using the host computer’s local address. Internet players need the server’s configured game port allowed by the operating-system firewall and, for a home server, forwarded on the router. Steam Support lists UDP 27015 as a common dedicated or listen-server port, but that is general guidance and is not a Fear Nightfall default. Read the actual value from server.properties, the hosting panel, or the startup log.

Choose managed hosting or self-hosting

Decision factor Managed host Self-hosted machine
Setup effort Select the listed pack in a control panel; the panel installs Forge, mods, configurations, and datapacks. Obtain the matching server distribution, install the required Java and Forge components, accept the EULA, configure the world, and create your own launch and backup routine.
Control Convenient defaults and web-console controls, with file access depending on the provider. Full access to files, JVM options, operating-system settings, and automation.
Cost model Recurring hosting bill; some providers advertise trials or introductory allocations that can change. Home electricity, hardware, bandwidth, and your own administration time.
Reliability Usually benefits from a datacenter connection and provider monitoring, but depends on the host’s node and support. Depends on home upload bandwidth, power, uptime, router configuration, and ISP restrictions.
Scaling RAM, backups, and sometimes locations can be changed from the account panel. You must upgrade hardware, storage, or bandwidth yourself.
Support Provider console and support channel, in addition to the modpack community. Community documentation and your own logs and troubleshooting.

For a group that wants to play quickly, managed hosting removes the most failure-prone file and networking work. Self-hosting is reasonable when you already operate a server, need complete JVM and filesystem control, or want to avoid a monthly service charge.

Set up a managed Fear Nightfall server

1. Select a listing that names the pack and version

Search the host’s modpack installer for Fear Nightfall or Fear Nightfall: Remains of Chaos. Confirm that the listing identifies Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge, and record the pack revision before creating the world. Provider catalogs can change; the name alone is not enough to establish compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Pick enough RAM

Choose a plan with at least 6 GB. Start at 8 GB if your group will contain several concurrent players, travel through unexplored terrain, or use the pack’s dimensions and scripted systems heavily. A provider may advertise an 8 GB free trial, but a trial allowance is a hosting promotion, not evidence that every server needs exactly 8 GB.

3. Install from the control panel

Use the panel’s modpack or installer menu, select the pinned Fear Nightfall release, and confirm the installation. The one-click workflow described by FadeHost installs the complete pack and supports one-click updates. ScalaCube similarly describes selecting Fear Nightfall in its server flow. Let the panel finish downloading before starting the server; interrupting the process can leave an incomplete mods or configuration directory.

4. Start and watch the first boot

Start the server from the console. The first launch can take longer while Forge generates libraries, configuration files, and the world. Read the console for a successful completion message and note the port it reports. Stop the server cleanly from the panel rather than terminating the process while it is saving.

5. Configure the world and access settings

Use the panel’s file editor or configuration controls to set the world name, difficulty, player limit, view or simulation distance, and operator permissions. Make changes while the server is stopped unless the panel explicitly supports live editing. Keep a copy of the original configuration so you can identify which change caused a later problem.

6. Share the address

Copy the address shown by the host. It may be a hostname with a non-standard port rather than a bare IP address. Send the complete address, including the port when the launcher requires it, to your players.

7. Test with one client before inviting everyone

Install the same pack release and Forge profile on one computer, connect, travel a short distance, and confirm that quests, world generation, and voice features load. A quick test catches a wrong version before several players create characters or generate valuable areas.

  • Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.

Make every client match the server

Have each player install the exact release selected in the server panel. In the launcher, verify all three items shown below:

  1. Minecraft version: 1.20.1 for the provider listings covered here.
  2. Forge loader: use the loader version bundled or specified by that Fear Nightfall release.
  3. Modpack revision: match the server’s numbered release, such as the 1.0.10 or 1.0.11 entries listed for the 1.20.1 pack.

Do not copy only a few visible mods from another player’s folder. Pack configurations, datapacks, scripts, and dependency versions can be just as important as the jar files. If a launcher offers an export or synchronization feature, use the server’s selected release as the source of truth.

Self-host Fear Nightfall

Self-hosting needs a machine capable of running Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge, the matching Fear Nightfall server files, sufficient memory, and a stable route to the internet. The available hosting documentation does not identify an author-maintained dedicated-server bundle or canonical startup script, so do not treat an invented filename or command as official. Use the server package supplied with the specific modpack release and follow its included instructions.

1. Prepare the host

  • Install a Java runtime supported by the selected Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge server package.
  • Create a dedicated directory for this server rather than mixing it with another Minecraft instance.
  • Allocate at least 6 GB to the Java process and retain operating-system headroom; 8 GB is a sensible initial allocation for a cooperative group.
  • Use an account with permission to read and write the server directory, but avoid running an internet-facing service as an unrestricted administrator account.

2. Obtain the matching server files

Download the server distribution associated with the exact Fear Nightfall release you intend to run. A client profile is not automatically a dedicated server. If the distribution includes an installer, libraries, a launch script, or configuration archive, keep those files together and follow the release’s instructions rather than substituting files from another version.

  • First player or team to 500 wins.
  • When you're down to one card, don't forget to yell "UNO"!

3. Complete the first launch

Run the supplied Forge server launcher or script from the server directory. The initial run may stop while creating an EULA file. Read the EULA, set the acceptance value as required by Mojang’s server terms, and launch again. Wait for the console to report that the server is ready before editing gameplay settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Configure and test locally

Set the world name, difficulty, player limit, and other properties in the generated configuration files. Start the server and connect from the same machine using the local address. Check that the pack reaches the title or join screen without missing-mod errors, then create a backup of the newly working world.

5. Open internet access only after the local test

Allow the configured port through the host firewall. On a home network, forward that same port from the router to the server computer’s fixed local address. The port number must match the server configuration; do not copy Steam’s general 27015 example unless your own server actually uses it.

Router, firewall, and CGNAT checks

  1. Read the active port from server.properties or the startup log.
  2. Create an operating-system firewall rule for that port and protocol.
  3. Reserve the server computer’s local IP address in the router so forwarding does not break after a reboot.
  4. Forward the port to that local address and restart the server.
  5. Test from a network outside your home, such as a phone hotspot. Testing only from inside the LAN can hide a forwarding error.
  6. If outside players still cannot connect, check whether the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT. CGNAT can prevent inbound forwarding; ask the ISP for a public address or use a hosting service that supplies reachable networking.

Steam’s published port ranges are useful general networking context, but they do not define Minecraft modpack networking. Use your own server’s configured value and protocol.

Memory, lag, and performance management

Recognize a memory problem

Repeated out-of-memory errors, long pauses during exploration, and a process that reaches its allocated heap indicate that the 6 GB floor is not enough for your workload. Increase memory in measured steps, restart, and observe the console and tick behavior. More RAM cannot repair a mismatched mod, broken script, or an overloaded CPU.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reduce avoidable load

  • Lower view and simulation distance if new chunks cause severe pauses.
  • Ask players to avoid generating large unexplored areas simultaneously during the first session.
  • Keep the server software, Forge loader, and pack release aligned instead of mixing individual updated mods.
  • Stop unused test worlds and remove abandoned instances so they do not compete for memory or storage.

Scale deliberately

Begin with 6 or 8 GB, record player count and symptoms, and increase the plan or hardware only when the logs and behavior justify it. A larger allocation can improve headroom for dimensions and exploration, but it does not guarantee a fixed frame rate or eliminate every server tick delay.

Backups and safe updates

Protect the world before changes

Back up the complete world directory and the server configuration before changing the pack, Forge loader, Java runtime, or major settings. Store at least one copy away from the live server. Managed panels can delete or replace files during a rebuild or pack switch, so download an archive before using those controls.

Pin a known-good release

Write down the exact Minecraft, Forge, and Fear Nightfall versions that work together. Do not update the server first and ask players to discover the new client version later. Schedule a maintenance window, back up, update the server, update every client to the same release, and test before reopening the world.

Recover from a failed update

  1. Stop the server and preserve the current logs and world backup.
  2. Restore the previous server files or select the prior pack release in the host panel.
  3. Restore the matching world backup if the failed version altered it incompatibly.
  4. Confirm that one client can join before inviting the full group.

Troubleshooting checklist

Symptom Likely check Correction
Client cannot join or reports missing mods Pack revision, Minecraft version, and Forge loader differ. Install the exact server release on the client; do not add or remove individual mods.
Server runs out of memory or freezes during exploration Allocation is at or below the 6 GB floor for a workload that needs more headroom. Move to 8 GB or higher when justified, reduce view or simulation distance, and inspect logs for separate mod errors.
LAN works but internet players time out Wrong port, firewall rule, router forwarding, changing local IP, or CGNAT. Read the active port, allow it in the firewall, reserve the local address, retest externally, and contact the ISP if CGNAT blocks inbound traffic.
World disappears after rebuilding the server The panel replaced or deleted the server directory. Stop using the rebuild control, restore the downloaded world archive, and make a new backup before further changes.
Players could join before an update but not afterward Server and clients are on different pinned releases. Return to the working version or update every client and the server together.
First boot appears stuck Forge is generating libraries, configurations, or the world. Watch the console and disk activity, allow the initial launch to finish, and investigate only after a clear error or process exit.

Launch-day checklist

  • Confirm Java Edition, Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge, and the exact Fear Nightfall release.
  • Allocate at least 6 GB of RAM; choose 8 GB when the group or exploration load warrants it.
  • Complete one clean local or panel-based boot.
  • Back up the world and record the working versions.
  • Verify the configured port rather than assuming 27015.
  • Test an external connection if the server is self-hosted.
  • Send players the full address and the same launcher profile.
  • Keep a rollback copy before installing updates or rebuilding the instance.
