How to Host a Cursed Walking Server: Essential, Dedicated, and Managed Setup

The easiest way to play Cursed Walking with one or two friends is Essential’s world-sharing mode. For a persistent world, more players, or a server that should run without the host playing, install the pack’s exact dedicated-server files on a Java 17 Forge server, allocate at least 6 GB of RAM (8 GB is a better starting point), and forward TCP port 25565 if the server is at home.

Cursed Walking is a Minecraft modpack rather than a standalone server program. Every connecting player must use the same Minecraft version, Forge branch, and modpack release as the server. Most current setup guidance points to the Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge branch, but the exact pack file can change, so confirm the release shown in the official CurseForge project before installing.

Choose the right way to host

There are three practical approaches. Your choice depends mainly on player count, whether the world must stay online when you are offline, and how much networking work you want to do.

Method Best for What you manage Main limitation
Essential world sharing A few friends joining the host’s singleplayer world The host’s computer, internet connection, and game session The world is effectively tied to the host and is not intended for a large group
Self-hosted dedicated server A persistent world, a regular group, or full control over files Java, Forge, server files, backups, firewall, port forwarding, and performance You are responsible for networking and maintenance
Managed host Players who want a panel, automated installation, and provider support Pack selection, server settings, backups, and billing Features, locations, file access, and supported versions vary by provider

Essential for a very small group

The Cursed Walking Wiki describes Essential as a way to invite friends into a singleplayer world. It is best for only a few players—the fewer, the better—because the host’s CPU, memory, and upload bandwidth are doing the work while the host is playing. This is the fastest option when you do not need a continuously available world.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use Essential when the same person will usually start the game, the group is small, and convenience matters more than uptime. If the host closes Minecraft, loses internet access, or becomes overloaded during a horde event, everyone’s session is affected.

Dedicated server for a persistent world

A dedicated server runs the world separately from the client game. Friends can join while the administrator is not playing, and you can control the Java process, configuration files, backups, and modpack updates. A home server works well if your internet connection accepts inbound traffic and you are comfortable configuring a firewall and router.

Managed hosting

A managed provider replaces most of the operating-system and networking work with a control panel. Documentation from ModReady describes Java 17, Forge, server files, backups, and an 8 GB Standard-or-higher path. Physgun documents a panel installer, lists 6 GB as a minimum, and says 8–10 GB provides more headroom. Apex Hosting documents selecting Cursed Walking in its Game File panel and installing the matching client through CurseForge. Campfire Hosting says its server installs Cursed Walking when the server starts and bills by the minute while it is running.

Those descriptions are provider-specific, not universal specifications. Before ordering, check the exact pack release, Minecraft and Forge branch, allocated RAM and CPU, storage type, geographic location, backup controls, file access, support policy, and billing model. Promotions and availability change, so do not treat a quoted price as permanent.

Confirm versions before you install anything

Version matching is the most important Cursed Walking requirement. The server and every client need the same:

  • Minecraft version
  • Forge branch and loader version
  • Cursed Walking modpack release
  • Required mod files and configuration files from that release

Current guides generally use Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge and Java 17, but published guides do not all identify the same “latest” Cursed Walking pack release. Open the official CurseForge project, select one exact file, and record its Minecraft version, Forge version, and release number. Give that same release to every player.

Do not install a client pack into a blank Forge server. Download the dedicated-server files or additional server pack supplied for the selected release. A client installation can contain client-only mods, while a server requires a different file set and startup layout.

Self-host a dedicated Cursed Walking server

The following sequence applies to a Windows, Linux, or similar machine that can run Java 17. File names differ between releases, so use the startup script and documentation included with the server pack instead of inventing your own command.

1. Prepare the machine

  • Use a 64-bit operating system with enough free disk space for the server files, generated world, logs, and backups.
  • Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime. A different Java major version can prevent Forge or the pack from starting.
  • Prefer SSD storage. Cursed Walking’s city exploration and first-time chunk generation can produce heavy disk activity.
  • Use a machine with fast CPU cores. Server ticks, world generation, mob AI, and event spikes are often limited by per-core speed rather than by adding many slow cores.

Create a clean, dedicated folder such as CursedWalkingServer. Do not mix it with an unrelated Forge installation or an existing world until you have a verified backup.

2. Download the matching server pack

From the Cursed Walking CurseForge project, choose the exact release you recorded earlier and download its server files or additional server pack. Read the included instructions before extracting. The package should provide the Forge/server libraries, mods, configuration files, and a supplied start script.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Extract everything into the clean server folder. Keep the folder structure intact; moving individual mods or configuration files into a different layout can make the startup script fail or create a different server from the one the pack author intended.

3. Run the supplied script once

Run the start script included with the pack. On Windows it is commonly a batch file; on Linux it is commonly a shell script. The first run normally creates files and stops because the Minecraft EULA has not yet been accepted. If the script window closes immediately, run it from a terminal so you can read the error and confirm that Java 17 is on the system path.

Do not replace the supplied script with a client launcher command. The script may set Forge arguments, memory flags, or library paths that the server needs.

4. Accept the Minecraft EULA

After the first run, open the generated eula.txt in the server folder. Change the EULA line to:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
eula=true

Save the file, then run the same supplied start script again. The server is ready only after the console reports that the world has finished loading and the server is accepting connections. The first startup can take longer while Forge builds caches and generates the world.

5. Keep the server folder and world together

Stop the process cleanly from the server console before closing the terminal or powering down the machine. The generated world, server.properties, configuration files, logs, and mod data belong to this installation. Do not copy only the world into a different pack and assume it will behave identically.

6. Open the network path for friends

For a home server, allow the Java server through the operating system firewall and forward TCP port 25565 on the router to the server machine’s local IP address. Give friends your public address and port unless you use a DNS name or another access method.

Reserve the server machine’s local IP in the router or configure a static address; otherwise a DHCP change can make the port-forward rule point to the wrong computer. Test from outside your home network, because joining with the local address from inside can succeed even when the public route is broken.

Carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT) can prevent inbound connections even when your router shows a port-forward rule. If the router’s public address does not match the address visible from the internet, ask your ISP whether CGNAT is in use. You may need a public IPv4 address, an IPv6 setup that all players can reach, or a managed host instead of ordinary port forwarding.

Set up each player’s client

  1. Install the same Minecraft release selected for the server.
  2. Install the same Forge branch and loader version.
  3. Install the identical Cursed Walking release from CurseForge.
  4. Do not add extra client-only or server-only mods unless the pack documentation explicitly permits them.
  5. Launch the pack once, then connect using the server address supplied by the host.

An immediate disconnect, registry error, or handshake failure usually means at least one of those four version sets differs. Recheck the release number shown in the launcher rather than relying on a similar-looking pack name.

How much RAM and hardware does the server need?

Published guidance gives 6 GB as an absolute minimum, 8 GB as a practical baseline, and 10 GB or more for heavy servers. ModReady’s 2026 scenario table assigns 6 GB to roughly 2–4 players, 8 GB to a recommended baseline, and 10+ GB to heavy workloads. Physgun’s 2026 guidance likewise calls 6 GB the minimum and 8–10 GB a comfortable cushion.

Use case Starting allocation Interpretation
Very small group, about 2–4 players 6 GB Minimum practical starting point; monitor lag during exploration and events
Typical friend group 8 GB Recommended baseline with room for normal modpack overhead
Heavy events, more players, or demanding worlds 10 GB or more Extra headroom, but RAM cannot compensate for a weak CPU or slow storage

These figures are allocation guidance, not a guarantee of a particular player count. Leave memory for the operating system and other services. Allocating every available gigabyte can cause the host machine to swap or become unresponsive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CPU and storage matter as much as memory

Choose fast CPU cores rather than judging a machine only by its total core count. Blood moons, hordes, mob AI, city exploration, and first-time terrain generation can create short tick-time spikes. An SSD reduces the delay when chunks and region files are read or written.

Bandwidth matters for a home server as well. The host must upload world updates to every player, so a connection that is adequate for web browsing may still struggle with several simultaneous explorers. If players experience rubber-banding while the host’s CPU and RAM are healthy, check upload capacity and event timing.

Reduce lag with conservative settings

Start with view-distance around 6–8 chunks and simulation-distance around 4–5 chunks. View distance controls how far terrain is sent and kept visible; simulation distance controls how much of the world runs entity and block activity. Lower values reduce loaded chunks and mob-AI work, which is especially useful during blood moons and horde events.

  • Keep the maximum player count modest until the world has been exercised with real players.
  • Increase distances gradually, one setting at a time, after checking tick performance.
  • Ask players to avoid sending everyone in different directions during first-time exploration if the server is already struggling with generation.
  • Watch the server console for repeated errors and crashes rather than treating every slowdown as a RAM problem.

Do not change world-generation settings, dimensions, structures, or mob behavior casually after a world already exists. Such changes can produce inconsistent terrain or damaged saves. Back up first, test on a copy, and make one change at a time.

Backups and safe pack updates

Back up the complete world and server data before changing the Cursed Walking release, Forge branch, dimensions, structures, or mob behavior. A useful backup is made while the server is stopped cleanly, or after you have followed a backup method that guarantees files are not being written mid-copy.

  1. Stop the server from its console and wait for the process to exit.
  2. Copy the world folder and the server’s configuration and mod-related files to a separate disk or host.
  3. Label the backup with the date, Cursed Walking release, Minecraft version, and Forge version.
  4. Install the new pack in a separate test folder and copy a backup of the world into it.
  5. Start the test copy, inspect terrain and dimensions, and have players join before updating the live world.
  6. If the update causes crashes or lost progress, stop the server and restore the pre-update backup rather than repeatedly starting the damaged world.

Testing on a copy also lets you confirm that every player can update their client before the live server is changed.

Managed hosting: what to verify in the panel

Managed panels simplify installation, but the same compatibility rules apply. Select Cursed Walking in the provider’s game-file or modpack installer, choose the exact release, and ensure the client instructions point players to the matching CurseForge file. Some providers install the pack when the server starts; others require an explicit installation action.

Questions to ask before choosing a plan

  • Does the panel offer the exact Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge branch and the release your group wants?
  • Is the advertised memory dedicated to your instance, and how many CPU cores or priority shares are included?
  • Can you download full world backups and restore them yourself?
  • Where is the server region, and can you move it if most players are elsewhere?
  • Can you access configuration files, logs, and the supplied startup arguments?
  • Does billing pause when the server is stopped, or does the plan run continuously?
  • What happens when the pack updates or a requested release is removed from the panel?

For a small group, an 8 GB plan leaves more room than a 6 GB minimum, while 10 GB or more is sensible when several players explore separately or events routinely create heavy entity loads. Compare the actual allocation and support terms rather than relying on a plan name such as “standard.”

Troubleshoot the most common failures

Immediate disconnect, registry mismatch, or handshake failure

  • Compare the exact Cursed Walking release on the server and every client.
  • Confirm that Minecraft versions match.
  • Confirm that Forge branch and loader versions match.
  • Remove any extra mods that are not part of the selected pack.
  • Make sure the server was built from the release’s server pack, not from a blank Forge installation.

Crashes or severe lag during hordes and blood moons

  • Lower view-distance to the 6–8 chunk range and simulation-distance to about 4–5.
  • Reduce the maximum player count temporarily.
  • Check CPU tick load and available memory while the event is active.
  • Move the world to SSD storage if chunk reads or writes are slow.
  • Review the server log for a specific mod error before adding more RAM.

Friends cannot see or join a home server

  • Verify that the server process is running and has reached its loaded-server message.
  • Allow Java through the host firewall.
  • Confirm a TCP 25565 forwarding rule points to the server’s current local IP.
  • Test from outside the home network.
  • Investigate CGNAT if the router’s public address does not match the internet-facing address.

World-generation problems after an installation or update

  • Confirm that the supplied server pack was used.
  • Restore the last known-good backup before experimenting further.
  • Do not change generation, dimension, structure, or mob settings on the live world while troubleshooting.
  • Test the new release with a copied world or a disposable test world.

Progress disappeared after an update

Stop the server immediately and restore the backup made before the update. Do not keep launching the altered world while hoping the problem will resolve; additional saves can overwrite information you need for recovery. Test the update against a copy first, then schedule the live change when every player has the matching client files.

A practical decision checklist

  • One host, one short session, and only a few friends: use Essential.
  • A persistent world for a regular group: use a dedicated server with the supplied server pack.
  • No desire to manage Java, port forwarding, or backups: choose a managed host after checking its exact version support and resources.
  • Starting resources: 6 GB for a small 2–4-player test, 8 GB for a typical group, and 10 GB or more for heavy workloads.
  • Before anyone joins: match Minecraft, Forge, and Cursed Walking versions exactly.
  • Before every pack update: stop the server, make a labeled backup, and test the update on a copy.
