To host CRIF – Create an empire of Rats to fight “Ice&Fire”, choose one exact modpack release, install that same release with its Forge loader on the server and every player’s Minecraft instance, then allocate enough memory for both the server and clients. The documented one-click route is ScalaCube’s control panel, which lists CRIF for Minecraft 1.16.5. CurseForge listings also show CRIF release lines for Minecraft 1.16.5 and 1.18.2, so there is no single version that can be assumed to work everywhere.
This guide explains the hosted workflow, a careful self-hosting plan, memory decisions, client matching, connection checks and the failure modes that most often prevent players from joining.

What CRIF is and what your server must support
CRIF combines three complementary systems. Create provides mechanical construction and automation; Rats adds utility creatures and automation possibilities, including farm and passive-resource work; Ice & Fire adds hostile fantasy creatures and combat objectives. The intended experience alternates between building, automation and exploration rather than focusing on only one of those activities.

There is more than one Minecraft release line
CurseForge search metadata associates CRIF with Forge releases for Minecraft 1.16.5 and 1.18.2. ScalaCube’s CRIF hosting page specifically documents a Minecraft 1.16.5 installation. Those facts describe available listings, not a promise that every CRIF file, server jar or client mod works across both versions.
Pick a release before you create the world. Record the Minecraft version, Forge loader version, CRIF file version and any configuration or script files included with that release. Every player must install that same set. A 1.16.5 client cannot join a 1.18.2 server simply because both are called CRIF, and a Forge installation with a different mod build can fail during the handshake.

- Get a Minecraft server from ScalaCube. Select a plan with enough memory for your intended world and player count. The CRIF guidance associated with the listing is the usual 8 GB of RAM; treat that as a planning figure rather than a tested minimum.
- Open the server control panel. Go to Servers, select your server, then open Game servers.
- Add the modpack. Choose Add Game Server, then select CRIF – Create an empire of Rats to fight “Ice&Fire”. Verify the Minecraft release shown by the panel before confirming. The documented ScalaCube page refers to 1.16.5.
- Wait for installation to finish. Do not start changing files while the panel is still downloading or extracting the pack. When the panel reports completion, open the server’s version, mod and startup settings and record what it installed.
- Install the identical client pack. Each player should use the same CRIF release, Minecraft version and Forge loader as the server. A launcher profile that merely has similarly named mods is not sufficient; compare the actual file versions.
- Start the server and test with one player. Use the address and port shown by the panel. Test joining before inviting everyone, then watch the console for missing-mod, wrong-version or memory errors.
- Invite the rest of the group. Give players the exact release information and connection address. Keep a copy of the server’s configuration and world backup before making substantial changes.
If the panel offers more than one CRIF entry, do not select by name alone. Match the entry to the release you installed on clients, especially when both 1.16.5 and 1.18.2 listings are visible elsewhere.
Self-hosting CRIF without a one-click installer
Self-hosting is possible, but the retrieved references do not establish one universal Java version, Forge build number, startup command or port-forwarding recipe. Those details are release-specific. Use the server files and instructions shipped for your exact CRIF release instead of copying a command intended for another Minecraft version.
1. Freeze the release you are going to run
- Write down the Minecraft version: 1.16.5 or 1.18.2 only if the chosen CRIF distribution explicitly supports it.
- Record the Forge loader version required by that distribution.
- Keep the original server pack archive and a clean copy of its configuration files.
- Tell every player which launcher profile and release they must use.
2. Prepare a dedicated server directory
Use a directory that is separate from your personal client installation. Give the service account permission to read and write the directory, and keep the world, logs, mods and configuration files together so they can be backed up as one unit. Avoid editing the live world while the server process is running.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3. Install the release’s Forge server components
Follow the installer and startup instructions supplied with the selected CRIF package. Do not substitute a Forge build from a different Minecraft line. If the package includes a server installer, use that package’s documented procedure; if it includes a ready-made server folder, preserve its file structure. The evidence available for this guide does not verify a current universal installer command, so a command copied from a different release can produce a server that starts but rejects every client.

4. Apply the pack files exactly
Copy the release’s mods, configuration files, scripts and required libraries into the server directory as instructed by that release. Do not mix files from 1.16.5 and 1.18.2. If you have previously run another modpack in the directory, start with a clean directory or remove the old pack’s files; leftover mods are a common cause of duplicate classes and missing dependencies.
5. Start once, then stop cleanly
Run the release’s documented startup command and allow it to create its initial files. If it asks you to accept a license agreement, stop the process, read that agreement and change the generated setting only as permitted. Start again and wait until the console indicates that the server is ready. Stop it using the server’s normal stop command rather than killing the process, so the world and region files close cleanly.
6. Configure networking for your situation
Players on the same home network may be able to connect using the host computer’s local address. Players on the internet generally need a reachable public address and a forwarded game port, but the exact port and router screens are not established by the available CRIF references. Use the port shown in the server configuration and your router or operating-system documentation. If you cannot forward a port, use a provider or a private networking method that all players understand instead of exposing random ports.

7. Test locally before opening the world
Join with one client on the same release. Check that the world loads, Create machines function, rats can be used and Ice & Fire creatures spawn as expected. Then test from a second network or have a friend join. This separates a modpack mismatch from a router or firewall problem.

Memory planning: server versus client
ScalaCube’s CRIF guidance says to use the usual 8 GB of RAM for the server. A community post describes the pack as relatively light and recommends dedicating at least 5 GB of RAM to the client for approximately 8–10 chunks of render distance. These figures come from different contexts: one is host-side guidance and the other is a player-side recommendation. Neither is a measured minimum for every world.
| Component | Published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Server | 8 GB of RAM | ScalaCube’s usual CRIF guidance; use it as a starting allocation and watch actual usage. |
| Client | At least 5 GB dedicated | Community guidance for roughly 8–10 chunks of render distance; lower or higher settings can change the result. |
Do not allocate every gigabyte on a machine to Java. The operating system, file cache and other services need memory. If a local server has 8 GB total, giving the Java process the entire amount can make the machine less stable than assigning a smaller heap and leaving headroom. On a hosted plan, confirm whether the advertised memory is dedicated to your server or shared with control-panel services.
What to do when memory is tight
- Lower client render distance toward the community reference range before increasing server settings.
- Reduce the number of simultaneously loaded areas and avoid leaving large Create contraptions running in many chunks.
- Close other applications on a self-hosted machine.
- Increase the plan or physical memory only after checking logs and monitoring usage; adding RAM cannot fix a wrong Forge or mod version.
An 8 GB DDR4 module is a reasonable hardware category to search for when upgrading a compatible local machine, but DDR generation, motherboard support, slot availability and operating-system limits must be checked before purchase. The 8 GB figure is not a universal hardware minimum.

Most failed joins are version failures rather than network failures. Give players a short, written specification:
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
- CRIF pack name and exact file or release identifier.
- Minecraft version, such as 1.16.5 or 1.18.2.
- Forge loader version required by that release.
- Any configuration, script or resource files supplied with the server pack.
- Server address and port.
Players should create a fresh launcher profile for the pack instead of adding CRIF mods to an unrelated profile. If a launcher supports importing a modpack file, use the same file that was used to build the server. If the server administrator changes a mod or configuration file, distribute that change to every client and restart before testing again.
Performance and world-management practices
Start with a controlled world
Generate the world with one or two testers first. Explore enough to confirm that terrain, structures and Ice & Fire content appear correctly, then stop and back up the world. This gives you a known-good restore point before several players build machines or load distant terrain.
Separate automation from exploration
Create contraptions and rat workers can keep processing while players travel elsewhere. Concentrating large factories in a manageable area makes it easier to identify a lag source and to exclude that area temporarily during troubleshooting. Avoid promising a fixed player count: the available references do not publish a tested capacity.

Back up before changes
Stop the server cleanly before copying the world. Keep at least one backup from before a mod, configuration or version change, and label backups with the date and release. Never test a new release by overwriting the only copy of an established world.
Troubleshooting the common failure modes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| “Incompatible version” or a Forge handshake error | Client and server use different Minecraft, Forge or CRIF releases. | Compare the written release specification with the actual launcher profile and server files. Reinstall the exact matching release on both sides. |
| Missing-mod or dependency message | A mod, library or configuration file is absent, duplicated or from another pack. | Start from a clean server directory, copy the selected CRIF files again and remove unrelated mods. Do not add a random version from another Minecraft line. |
| Server starts, but players time out | Address, port, firewall or router configuration is wrong. | Test locally first, then from another network. Confirm the port shown in the server configuration and allow it through the host firewall and router as appropriate. |
| Long pauses, disconnects or “can’t keep up” messages | World generation, loaded chunks, automation, entity activity or insufficient memory. | Test with one player, lower client render distance, stop heavy contraptions, reduce loaded areas and inspect memory use before changing the plan. |
| World or machines behave differently after an update | A mod or configuration changed without a compatible migration. | Stop the server, restore the pre-update backup and verify the release’s migration notes before trying again. |
A practical decision checklist before inviting players
- Have you chosen one exact CRIF release rather than mixing the 1.16.5 and 1.18.2 lines?
- Does the server use the Forge loader required by that release?
- Does every client use the same Minecraft, Forge, CRIF, mod and configuration files?
- Is the server allocated around the published 8 GB guidance, with memory left for the operating system where applicable?
- Can each client dedicate around 5 GB if needed for the community’s 8–10 chunk guidance?
- Have you tested one local connection and one connection from outside the host network?
- Have you made and tested a clean world backup?
- Do you know how to read the server console and retrieve logs before changing files?
- Have you checked the host’s current storage, backup, location, player-limit and price terms rather than assuming them?
What players can expect from the pack
The progression is deliberately mixed. Create rewards planning factories, transport and construction systems. Rats can add utility and automate parts of farming or passive resource collection. Ice & Fire gives exploration a risk through hostile fantasy creatures and supplies combat goals for players who would otherwise spend all their time building. A successful server therefore needs space for workshops, resource farms and adventure areas, rather than treating the pack as only a technology pack or only a creature-combat pack.
That combination also explains why matching files and maintaining backups matter. A small change to a machine, rat setup or creature configuration can affect a shared world used by several play styles. Lock the release, test changes on a copy and document what the group is running.
Bottom line
The simplest reliable setup is the documented ScalaCube one-click installation, using the CRIF entry for the exact Minecraft release your group has installed. If you self-host, follow the selected release’s Forge and server instructions rather than relying on a universal command. Plan around the published 8 GB server guidance and the community’s 5 GB client guidance, then verify real usage. Version matching, clean files, reachable networking and tested backups are more important than choosing a larger number on a plan.
