Use the dedicated Craft to Exile 2 SERVER-2.1.4.zip that matches the client release Craft to Exile 2-2.1.4.zip (both released September 10, 2026), run it with a 64-bit Java 17 JDK, and allocate 4–8 GB of memory. You can run the server on your own Windows, Linux, or macOS machine, place it on managed hosting, invite friends through Essential, or deploy it with Docker. Self-hosting requires forwarding the Minecraft port and handling backups, updates, and uptime yourself.

Craft to Exile 2 is a Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge modpack built around exploration and customization, with more than 250 quests. A dedicated server is not a vanilla Minecraft server with a few client mods copied into it: the server pack contains the Forge loader, libraries, configuration, and server-side files expected by the pack. Every player must use the same client release as the server.
| Path | Best for | What you need | Main trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-host on a PC or VPS | Owners who want maximum control and the lowest service cost | 64-bit Java 17 JDK, matching server ZIP, 4–8 GB available RAM, and router port forwarding when hosted at home | You handle networking, firewall rules, updates, backups, security, and keeping the machine online |
| Managed host such as the Akliz workflow documented by the project | Players who prefer a control panel and automatic modpack deployment | A hosting plan and confirmation that the current 2.1.4 server pack is supported | Recurring cost and less low-level access, but far less operating-system and router work |
| Essential Host World | A small private group that wants the simplest in-game option | Every player installs the latest 1.20.1 Essential release included with the pack | The invited host must be online; this is peer hosting, not an always-on dedicated server |
| Docker Compose | Experienced Linux or container administrators who want repeatable deployment | Docker Compose, a CurseForge API key, the server ZIP, persistent storage, and basic YAML and terminal skills | More reproducible, but API credentials, volumes, networking, updates, and container security become your responsibility |
If you want a world available while your own computer is off, use a managed host or an always-on VPS. If the group plays only when one person is present, self-hosting or Essential is usually sufficient.

Requirements and version matching
Use the current matching pack files
At the time of this guide, the current CurseForge files are Craft to Exile 2-2.1.4.zip for clients and Craft to Exile 2 SERVER-2.1.4.zip for a dedicated server. Both are dated September 10, 2026. Download the server file specifically labelled SERVER; do not download a vanilla 1.20.1 Forge server and copy arbitrary files from a client installation. A mismatch can produce missing-mod errors, registry errors, or a disconnect during the loading phase.
When the pack releases a newer client and server pair, update both sides together. Keep a copy of the exact ZIP used to build the running server so you can reproduce it if an update needs to be rolled back.

Install the correct Java
Install a 64-bit Java 17 JDK, not a 32-bit runtime and not a different Java major version. A JDK supplies the tools expected by many modded-server launch scripts. If the computer has several Java installations, the script may select the wrong one. Either remove the conflicting installation or edit run.bat on Windows or run.sh on Linux and macOS so the command points directly to the Java 17 executable.
Verify the selected executable before troubleshooting the pack. In a terminal, run java -version; the reported major version should be 17 and the operating system should be 64-bit. If the script uses an explicit path, run that path with -version as well, because the system-wide command and the server script can resolve different Java installations.
Plan memory and storage
The project wiki recommends allocating at least 4–8 GB of RAM. Treat that as the server process allocation, not the total memory in the computer. Leave enough RAM for the operating system, Java overhead, file caching, and any other applications. A machine with only 8 GB total can become unstable if the server is given all 8 GB.
Start at the lower end for a small private group and increase allocation only when the server log or in-game symptoms show memory pressure. More RAM does not fix a CPU bottleneck, a slow disk, a network problem, or an inefficient configuration. Store the world on a reliable local SSD when possible and reserve free disk space for backups and temporary update files.

Install a dedicated server on Windows, Linux, or macOS
1. Create a dedicated folder
Make a new folder used only for this server, such as CraftToExile2Server. Do not place it inside a client instance directory or a folder synchronized by a service that may lock files while the server is writing. The folder will contain the world, configuration, Forge libraries, logs, scripts, and backup material.
2. Extract the server ZIP
Download the matching Craft to Exile 2 SERVER-2.1.4.zip and extract its contents into the dedicated folder. Preserve the directory structure supplied by the archive. If your extraction utility creates an extra nested folder, move the files so that run.bat or run.sh is directly in the folder you intend to use.
3. Start once to generate files
- Windows: double-click
run.batfrom the server folder. If Windows hides extensions, confirm that the file is actually a batch script and not a text file namedrun.bat.txt. - Linux: open a terminal in the folder, make the script executable with
chmod +x run.sh, then run./run.sh. - macOS: open Terminal, change to the folder with
cd, make the script executable withchmod +x run.sh, and run./run.sh. macOS may ask you to approve the Java binary in its security settings.
The first launch can take longer than later starts while Forge creates libraries, configuration, and the world. Keep the console open and read the final lines. A clean start reaches a server-ready message rather than closing immediately. If it exits, capture the first error and check Java selection before changing files.
4. Accept the EULA when prompted
If the first run creates eula.txt and stops, open it, read the Minecraft EULA, and change only eula=false to eula=true if you agree. Start the script again. Do not delete generated folders to bypass this step; doing so removes useful diagnostic information.
5. Set the command-block option
After the initial files exist, open server.properties in a plain-text editor and set enable-command-block=true, as recommended by the project wiki. Save the file while the server is stopped, then restart it. Keep the file in its original location and encoding so other properties remain intact.
6. Allocate 4–8 GB
Open the supplied launch script and locate its Java memory arguments, commonly the values following -Xms and -Xmx. Set the maximum to a value your computer can sustain while leaving memory for the operating system. For example, a host with 16 GB total might begin with a 4–6 GB maximum; the exact value depends on what else the machine is doing. Do not blindly set the maximum to the machine’s full physical RAM.

- Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!
If the script does not contain obvious memory arguments, use the pack’s supplied launcher rather than replacing it with a generic command. Keeping the supplied script preserves the Forge and mod arguments expected by this release.
Make the server reachable from outside your home
Forward the Minecraft port
A home server is normally behind a router using network address translation. Port forwarding sends incoming traffic on the Minecraft port to the local IP address of the computer running the server. Give that computer a stable local address through a DHCP reservation or a static configuration, otherwise a reboot can send the rule to the wrong machine.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Find the host computer’s local IPv4 address.
- Sign in to the router and open its port-forwarding or virtual-server page.
- Create a rule for the port specified in the server’s
server.properties, pointing to the host’s local IPv4 address and the protocol required by the server. - Allow Java or the server process through the computer’s firewall when the operating system asks.
- Start the server, then test the port from outside your home network with a port-checking service. Testing from the same Wi-Fi can give a misleading result on routers that do not support NAT loopback.
The project wiki directs users to the modded-Minecraft Discord’s ??portforwarding guidance for router-specific examples. Router menus differ by manufacturer, so use the model’s terminology rather than copying a rule intended for another device.
Protect the exposed service
- Use a strong, unique administrator password and do not share operator credentials with ordinary players.
- Keep the operating system, Java 17 installation, Forge files, and modpack release current within the versions supported by the pack.
- Expose only the Minecraft port needed by players. Do not publish RCON or container-management ports to the public internet unless you understand authentication and firewall restrictions.
- Run the server under a dedicated operating-system account with only the file permissions it needs.
- Do not disable the firewall globally to solve a connection problem; create a narrow rule for the server instead.
Connect players with the matching client
Every player should install Craft to Exile 2-2.1.4.zip through the same launcher source and allow it to finish downloading all files. The client must use Minecraft 1.20.1, the Forge loader expected by this pack, and the same mod and configuration set as the server. A player on a different pack revision can fail before the world list appears, even when the server itself is healthy.
- Start the dedicated server and wait for its ready message.
- Give players the host’s public address, not the private address used by the router forwarding rule.
- Have each player launch the exact matching client release.
- In Minecraft multiplayer, enter the public address and the configured port if it is not the default shown by the client.
- If a player cannot join, compare the client and server versions first, then inspect the server console for the first disconnect or missing-mod message.
Players on the same home network can usually connect using the host’s local address, while friends on the internet need the public address and a working forwarding rule. A changing public IP can make the address change; a dynamic-DNS service is optional but is not required to run the pack.
Use managed hosting when you do not want to operate the machine
The project wiki documents an Akliz setup and notes that the workflow is similar on other hosts that provide automatic modpack installation. A managed panel typically handles Java selection, process supervision, basic backups, and network exposure, so you do not need to configure a home router or keep a personal PC running.

- Before paying, ask the provider to confirm support for the current Craft to Exile 2 2.1.4 server pack, Minecraft 1.20.1, and Forge. Support for a similarly named pack or an older release is not enough.
- Create the server from the provider’s modpack selector, choosing the server edition rather than a client-only profile.
- Check the panel’s Java setting and select Java 17 if the panel exposes a choice.
- Set memory within the provider’s plan limits, beginning in the 4–8 GB range recommended for the pack.
- Start once, watch the console for a successful Forge initialization, and set
enable-command-block=truein the file manager if the panel did not expose that property. - Use the panel’s address and port for players. If you need to edit files manually, the wiki mentions FileZilla or WinSCP over FTP; use the provider’s credentials and encrypted connection option.
Managed hosting is easier, but it does not remove the need for version discipline. Keep a downloadable copy of the world and configuration, and verify the provider’s backup retention before relying on it as your only recovery plan.
Host a small private world with Essential
Essential provides a peer-hosting alternative for a small friend group. Install the latest 1.20.1 Essential release in the pack for every player. In the game’s Social menu, add friends, choose Host World, and invite them.
This route avoids router configuration and a separate server folder, but the host’s game must remain open. It is therefore unsuitable when players need an always-on world, scheduled restarts, automated backups, or a large public community. Treat the host’s single-player save as valuable data and keep independent backups before major modpack updates.
Deploy with Docker Compose
A community Compose implementation uses the itzg/minecraft-server image, persistent world and configuration storage, CurseForge synchronization, RCON, health checks, and a 6 GB memory setting. This is a viable route for an experienced Linux administrator, but it is not the simplest first installation.
What the Docker route requires
- Docker Engine and Docker Compose on an always-on host.
- A CurseForge API key and the Craft to Exile 2 server ZIP required by the Compose project.
- A YAML editor and enough terminal knowledge to inspect volumes, ports, logs, and environment variables.
- Persistent storage mapped outside the container so a replacement container does not erase the world.
- A firewall policy that exposes only the Minecraft port. Keep RCON bound privately unless you have configured strong authentication and a restricted network.
Start and operate the stack
Place the Compose file, environment values, and server archive in the layout expected by the community project. Review every variable before starting, especially the API key, host paths, memory limit, and published ports. The documented startup command is:
docker compose up -d
After startup, inspect the container logs and wait for the same server-ready state you would expect from run.bat or run.sh. Standard Compose operations include docker compose logs -f for live logs, docker compose stop for a clean stop, and docker compose restart for a restart. Use the project’s documented update and backup procedure rather than replacing the container while it is writing the world.
Review the community files before exposing the service. An image update, an unpinned tag, an accidentally published RCON port, or a host-path permission error can change behavior even when the modpack itself has not changed.
Back up safely and update without destroying the world
Before every update
- Stop the server cleanly from its console or hosting panel and wait until the process exits.
- Copy the entire world save to storage separate from the live server.
- Back up
server.properties, custom configuration, and any scripts or permission files you changed. - Record the currently installed client ZIP, server ZIP, Forge version, Java major version, and any manual edits.
- Only then stage the new server pack in a separate folder or a provider’s update workflow.
Apply the pack’s update instructions
The project wiki instructs administrators to remove pack and configuration folders and, when Forge changes, the specified libraries and launcher scripts. Follow the exact list for the target release. Do not delete the world save or server.properties. Those two items contain your world and server-specific settings; deleting them can reset progress or force you to rebuild access and gameplay options.
After replacing the required files, start the server once with no players connected. Watch for migration messages, allow the process to finish, stop it again, and take a fresh backup before opening the world to the group. Update every player’s client to the same release before they join.
Keep a long-running server healthy
Schedule restarts
The project wiki recommends an automatic restart every six hours for a server left running. Schedule the restart outside the group’s normal play window, announce the maintenance time, and allow enough time for the world to save before the process is terminated. A restart is maintenance, not a substitute for diagnosing crashes or a memory leak.
Monitor symptoms, not just uptime
- Use the server console and log files to identify the first error, not the final cascade of messages.
- Use Crash Utilities with
F12where available to collect crash information. - Use Spark to investigate tick delays, CPU-heavy tasks, and lag patterns.
- Watch free disk space and backup completion; a full disk can look like a random world or crash problem.
- Keep player count and exploration load realistic for the available CPU, storage, and memory. The 4–8 GB recommendation is a starting range, not a promise of unlimited players.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The launch script closes immediately
- Run the script from an open terminal so the error remains visible.
- Confirm that the selected Java executable is a 64-bit Java 17 JDK.
- Check that the ZIP was extracted completely and that the script is in the server root.
- Read the first exception in the log before changing memory or deleting files.
Players receive a missing-mod or registry error
Compare the client and server pack filenames and release numbers. Both sides must be the 2.1.4 pair described above, with the same Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge environment. Do not solve a mismatch by copying individual client mods into the server; replace the server with the dedicated server ZIP and reinstall the matching client profile.
The server works locally but friends cannot join
- Confirm that the server is listening on the port shown in
server.properties. - Check the host computer’s local address and the router forwarding destination.
- Verify the operating-system firewall rule for Java or the server process.
- Test from a network outside the home connection.
- Give friends the public address, not the private address.
If the public address changed, update the address you gave the group. If the internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary router forwarding may not be possible; use managed hosting, a VPS, or another network solution rather than repeatedly changing local firewall settings.
The world is laggy or the server stops responding
Check Spark data and the server log before simply adding RAM. Confirm that the machine is not swapping, that the world is on a healthy disk, and that the host is not running unrelated CPU-intensive software. A clean six-hour restart schedule can reduce degradation on a long-running instance, but persistent tick delays require identifying the task or area causing them.
An update resets settings or appears to erase progress
Stop the server and compare the live folder with the backup. Verify that the world save and server.properties were preserved and that the update did not point the launcher at a new working directory. Restore the last known-good world and configuration if necessary, then repeat the update using the pack’s list of folders to replace.
Final pre-launch checklist
- The server is built from the dedicated SERVER-2.1.4.zip, not a vanilla installation.
- All clients use Craft to Exile 2-2.1.4, Minecraft 1.20.1, and the matching Forge setup.
- The launcher uses a 64-bit Java 17 JDK.
- The host has enough total memory to allocate 4–8 GB without starving the operating system.
enable-command-block=trueis set inserver.properties.- The Minecraft port is forwarded to a stable local host address, and the firewall allows the server.
- Players have the public address and know whether they must include a non-default port.
- The world,
server.properties, and custom configuration have independent backups. - A restart schedule and a plan for reading Crash Utilities or Spark output are in place.
For the least technical work, choose a managed host that explicitly supports the current 2.1.4 server pack. For full control, install the supplied server ZIP with Java 17, forward the configured port, and operate the world with disciplined backups and matched client releases. Essential is convenient for a small group that plays only while the host is online, while Docker suits administrators who already manage containers, persistent volumes, and public-service security.
