What you need for a working Dragonfyre server
Dragonfyre is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1. Its project description presents it as a multiplayer-focused continuation set 1,000 years after Ultimate, with custom equipment and a deep lore setting. The official listing shows 3C Beta as the latest client and server release, uploaded August 18, 2026, with 859,068 downloads recorded by CurseForge at that time.

The 8 GB figure is a practical small-group starting point seen on current hosting pages, not a guaranteed minimum. An older community Docker example allocates 16 GB because the pack is demanding. Treat both figures as starting guidance rather than a promise that every world will perform identically.

Choose where the server will run
Self-hosting on a PC or dedicated machine
Self-hosting has the lowest recurring service cost because you supply the computer and internet connection. You also take responsibility for Java and Forge installation, port forwarding, backups, uptime, updates, and diagnosing crashes or lag. A wired connection and an SSD are preferable, but the decisive factors are available CPU time, memory and a reliable upload connection.
Managed Minecraft hosting
A managed host can provide a control panel, one-click modpack installation and support with restarts and backups. You pay a recurring fee and depend on the provider’s hardware, location and update process. Before ordering, confirm all of these points:

- It supports Forge on Minecraft 1.20.1.
- It offers the current 3C Beta server pack, or allows you to upload
CARPG Dragonfyre V3C Beta Serv.zip. - The plan’s RAM is dedicated or clearly specified, rather than an ambiguous burst limit.
- CPU performance, storage type and player or world limits are documented.
- Automated backups, restore points and their retention period are included or available.
- DDoS protection, server location, cancellation terms and data export are clear.
- The panel lets you control Java version, Forge arguments and modpack updates without replacing your world unexpectedly.
Do not select a host solely because it advertises a Dragonfyre icon. Verify the exact 3C Beta build and the upload process; an installation of an older pack can appear to work while producing client mismatch errors later.
Docker on your own server
Docker is useful when you already operate Linux services and want the Minecraft process isolated and reproducible. The community repository wishmstr/minecraft_medieval_dragonfyre documents a Docker Compose deployment, but its example is tied to the older Dragonfyre 2F Beta server archive, CARPG_Dragonfyre_V2F_Beta_Serv.zip, and allocates 16 GB of RAM. It is not evidence of the current 3C requirements.
Manual installation: step by step
1. Make a dedicated server directory
Create a folder used only for this world and its files. Keeping the server separate from your client installation makes backups, upgrades and rollback much safer. Use a path with normal read/write permissions and enough free disk space for the world, logs and backups.
2. Download the server pack
From the official Dragonfyre project page, download the server artifact named CARPG Dragonfyre V3C Beta Serv.zip. Do not download only the client profile. Extract the archive into the dedicated server directory and keep the original ZIP outside the live folder as a recovery copy.

If you intentionally need the older 2F Beta release for an existing installation, the server and every client must remain on that 2F build. Never mix the 2F server archive with 3C clients, or vice versa.
3. Install and verify Java 17
Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime on the machine that will run the server. Open a terminal or command prompt in any directory and run:
java -version
The output should identify Java 17. If it reports an older major version, install Java 17 and ensure your operating system’s PATH points to that installation. If multiple Java versions are installed, the server may launch with the wrong one unless you select the Java 17 executable explicitly in your start script or hosting panel.
4. Install Forge only if the pack has not done so
Inspect the extracted files before installing another loader. If the archive already contains the Forge server files and a working launch script, use those files. If it does not contain an installed loader, download the Forge installer for Minecraft 1.20.1 and choose its server installation option, targeting the Dragonfyre server directory. Installing a second or different Forge build over a supplied server can create duplicate libraries or an incompatible loader.
5. Start once, accept the EULA, then start again
Launch the server with the supplied script or the Forge server launcher. The first run normally creates configuration files and stops when it detects that Minecraft’s EULA has not been accepted. Open the generated eula.txt, read the license, change the setting to:
eula=true
Save the file and start the server again. Do not change unrelated configuration values until the server reaches a stable prompt. If no EULA file appears, read the console output for a Java, permissions or missing-loader error instead of repeatedly restarting.

6. Give the process enough memory
Use the server’s launch script or your hosting panel’s Java-argument field to set the heap. For a small private group, begin near 8 GB if the machine has enough physical RAM left for the operating system. Monitor actual usage and performance while several players explore; increasing memory cannot fix a CPU bottleneck, a broken mod or a poor network route.
Leave headroom for the operating system and other services. Assigning nearly all installed RAM to Java can cause swapping or make the entire machine unresponsive. The Docker documentation’s 16 GB example reflects that older deployment’s heavy-pack setup, not a universal requirement for 3C Beta.

- Allow the Java server process through the host operating system’s firewall.
- Allow inbound TCP port
25565in the router or edge firewall. - Forward TCP port
25565to the machine’s stable local IP address. A DHCP reservation prevents the forwarding rule from silently pointing at a different computer later. - Find the public address your friends will use and share it privately. Players on the same home network can usually connect with the server’s local address instead.
Test from a network outside your home, such as a phone hotspot, because a local connection can succeed even when the public route is closed. If forwarding is correct but outside players still cannot connect, your internet service may use carrier-grade NAT or block inbound connections; in that case, ask the provider for a public address or use a managed host.
8. Join and confirm the installation
Start the server fully before launching the client. In the Dragonfyre client profile, select Minecraft 1.20.1, the same Forge loader and the same 3C Beta build. Enter the server’s local or public address as appropriate. The first login may take longer while chunks and mod data are generated.
Why the first startup takes so long
Forge and a large modpack may unpack libraries, create configuration files, build registries and generate world data during the first launch. This can take several minutes and may show long pauses in the console. Avoid repeatedly killing the process during this phase; interrupting generation can leave incomplete files and make the next start slower or less reliable.
Wait for a clear server-ready message or an interactive console prompt. If the process exits, read the bottom of the log for the first exception rather than treating every later line as a separate failure. Preserve the log before trying a different Java version or deleting files.

Memory planning for different groups

Increasing the heap is not a substitute for lowering an excessive view or simulation distance, stopping unnecessary services, or moving the world to faster storage. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether the result improved.
Docker deployment: when the older example is appropriate
Use the Docker example only when you deliberately want the 2F Beta environment documented by that repository. Its documented workflow places CARPG_Dragonfyre_V2F_Beta_Serv.zip in a /modpacks directory and runs Minecraft 1.20.1 with Dragonfyre 2F Beta. The example allocates 16 GB of RAM because the pack is heavy.
For a current 3C server, first confirm that the Compose files support uploading the 3C archive and selecting its Forge files. If they do not, use the official 3C server pack manually or choose a host that explicitly supports custom uploads. Updating only the ZIP while leaving an older container image, loader or configuration in place can produce a hybrid installation that no client can join.
Regardless of deployment method, keep the world data outside disposable containers, stop the server cleanly before copying it, and test a restore on a separate directory. A container is not a backup.

Dragonfyre is not a vanilla server where clients can usually tolerate different content. Treat these as a single version tuple:
- Minecraft: 1.20.1
- Forge: the loader version supplied or required by the selected Dragonfyre build
- Dragonfyre: 3C Beta, or the deliberately retained 2F Beta installation
When a player receives a missing-mod, mismatched-mod or registry error, compare the launcher profile and the server’s installed files before changing network settings. Reinstalling the client from the exact same pack release is often safer than manually adding or removing individual mods.

Before an update, stop the server, make a complete copy of the world and configuration directories, record the old pack filename and test the new build on a separate copy. Do not update a live world while players are connected. Keep the previous server files until everyone has successfully joined the new build and the world has been backed up again.
Troubleshooting common failures
The server immediately says Java is unsupported or exits
- Run
java -versionand confirm Java 17, not an older runtime. - Check that the launch script is using the same Java installation you tested in the terminal.
- Read the first error in the console for a missing library or Forge installation problem.
It stops at the EULA message
Open eula.txt in the server directory, accept the license by setting eula=true, save it and start again. Editing a different copy of the file has no effect, so verify the path shown by the launch console.
Friends cannot connect, but you can
- Confirm the server is listening on TCP 25565 and that the operating-system firewall allows Java.
- Verify the router forwards TCP 25565 to the server’s current local IP.
- Test from an external network rather than from inside the same LAN.
- Check for carrier-grade NAT or an ISP inbound-port restriction if the forwarding rule appears correct.
A player receives a mod or registry mismatch
Compare Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge and the Dragonfyre build on both sides. A 3C client cannot be paired safely with the 2F server archive, and a client-only installation is not a replacement for the server pack. Reinstall both from the same release when in doubt.
The server runs out of memory or becomes very slow
- Check the Java heap limit and leave RAM for the operating system.
- Reduce view or simulation distance before assuming that more memory is required.
- Watch whether lag occurs during new-chunk generation, which also stresses CPU and storage.
- Stop other applications and confirm that the server is using a 64-bit Java runtime.
- Take a backup before changing performance settings or removing configuration files.
The first launch appears frozen
Give Forge and the mods time to generate data. Examine the console for ongoing activity and avoid force-closing the process repeatedly. If it has genuinely exited, preserve the log and correct the first reported error.
Backups, administration and safe updates
Back up the files that matter
At minimum, back up the world folders, server configuration, player data, scripts and the exact server-pack archive used for that world. Keep more than one copy, with at least one stored on another device. A backup made while the server is writing can be incomplete, so stop the server cleanly or use a backup method designed for live worlds.
Plan restarts and maintenance
Schedule restarts during a quiet period, announce maintenance to players and let the server finish saving before closing it. Keep logs from failed updates and retain the last known-good directory so you can roll back without guessing which files changed.
Limit access
Share the public address only with people who need it, use the server’s access controls where available, and avoid granting operator privileges casually. Keep Java, the operating system and any management panel updated, but never apply an update to the only copy of an active world.

For most first-time groups, the decisive check is not a marketing label or a maximum player number. It is whether the chosen machine can run the exact 3C Beta server pack on Forge 1.20.1, provide Java 17 and enough memory, and remain reachable on TCP 25565. Once those conditions are satisfied, backups and strict version matching prevent most avoidable outages.
