Use the Wii’s standard yellow-white-red AV cable when the TV has a compatible composite input; use a separately sold Wii Component AV Cable for a component-equipped set and 480p mode; or place a suitable composite-to-HDMI converter between the Wii and an HDMI-only television. Check the TV’s model manual before buying an adapter, because Samsung combines or labels inputs differently across models.
Choose the connection that matches your Samsung TV
Turn the television around and identify its physical inputs before connecting anything. You may find a yellow composite video jack, a group of green/blue/red component jacks with red/white audio, HDMI ports only, or a Samsung-supplied breakout adapter that exposes analog inputs through a smaller socket. The labels and source names vary by model and region, so use the manual for the complete model number when the jack layout is unclear. Samsung’s console guidance notes that older sets and newer sets can use different port arrangements and menu paths.

| TV inputs you have | Hardware needed | Wii video mode | TV source to select |
|---|---|---|---|
| Composite AV (yellow video plus red/white audio) | Standard Wii AV cable | Standard-definition 480i | AV or Video |
| Component video (green Y, blue Pb/Cb, red Pr/Cr) plus audio | Wii Component AV Cable, sold separately | 480i or 480p, where supported | Component |
| HDMI only | Standard Wii AV cable, composite-to-HDMI converter, HDMI cable, and any converter power supply | Converter-dependent output; the Wii source remains composite | The HDMI port used |
| Wii mini console | Wii AV Cable; component path is not supported by Nintendo | Standard-definition output | AV or Video |
Do not assume that a converter creates a high-definition Wii signal. The official guidance establishes the need for a suitable converter on an HDMI-only set, but it does not verify a particular model, universal compatibility, input lag, or picture-quality improvement.
Identify the Wii cable and the TV’s input jacks
Recognize the standard Wii AV cable
The original cable has a proprietary AV Multi Out plug at the console end and three RCA plugs at the television end: yellow for composite video, white for left or mono audio, and red for right audio. The console-side plug fits the Wii’s AV Multi Out socket; the RCA plugs belong in inputs marked Audio/Video In, not outputs. If the original lead is missing or damaged, a replacement Wii AV cable is appropriate only when the Samsung has a compatible analog input.
#1 Best Overall
- STABLE WII TO HDMI CONVERSION: Convert your Wii or Wii U audio and video signal to HDMI for modern HDTVs, monitors and projectors. Designed for stable signal transmission and synchronized sound and picture, it works with 720p and 1080p HDMI displays while preserving the console’s original image quality.
- SIMPLE PLUG-AND-PLAY SETUP: No drivers, software, settings or external power required. Connect the adapter to your console, attach an HDMI cable, select the correct HDMI input on your display and start playing. For the most reliable connection, plug the adapter directly into the TV, monitor or projector rather than an HDMI switch or splitter.
- HDMI AUDIO PLUS 3.5MM AUDIO JACK: Audio is transmitted through the HDMI connection, while the built-in 3.5mm audio output lets you connect headphones, a headset or external speakers. Enjoy private late-night gaming or send the sound directly to your preferred audio device.
- SUPPORTS STANDARD WII DISPLAY MODES: Compatible with NTSC 480i, 480p and PAL 576i display modes. Some newer TVs and monitors may not accept certain 240p or 480i game signals through HDMI; if no picture appears, set the Wii display resolution to 480p when the game and console support it.
- COMPACT DESIGN & CLEAR COMPATIBILITY: Measuring approximately 6 × 3 × 1.9 cm, the compact adapter connects neatly behind the console without taking up desk space or adding tangled cables. Compatible with Wii and Wii U consoles using the Wii AV output connection; not compatible with Wii Mini. If you experience no picture, no sound or abnormal display lines, contact customer support for troubleshooting or replacement assistance.
Distinguish composite from component
Composite uses one yellow video jack and two audio jacks. Component separates video into three jacks: green Y, blue Pb/Cb, and red Pr/Cr, with separate white and red audio. The red component video jack and the red right-audio jack are different connections even though both are red. Follow the printed labels rather than color alone.
Check for a combined Samsung input
Some Samsung televisions place composite video on the green component jack, identified by a yellow ring or a nearby “Video” label. In that arrangement the yellow Wii plug goes into the green/yellow-ringed jack, while white and red audio go to the corresponding AV audio inputs; the blue and other red component-video jacks remain unused. This works only if the model manual says that the jack accepts composite. A television that supplies analog connections through a small Samsung adapter requires that exact adapter matched to the full model number.
Connect the Wii with composite AV
Composite is the simplest route when the TV has a usable analog input. It carries the Wii’s standard-definition signal and does not provide the Wii’s 480p option.
Recommended Free Tools
- Switch off the Wii and Samsung TV. Plug the cable’s AV Multi Out connector firmly into the port on the back of the Wii.
- Insert the yellow RCA plug into the TV’s composite video input. On a combined Samsung jack, use the green socket marked with a yellow ring or “Video” only when the manual confirms composite support.
- Insert the white plug into the left or mono audio input and the red plug into the right audio input. Do not place the red audio plug in the red Pr/Cr component-video jack.
- Turn on the TV and Wii. Open the Samsung source or Connected Devices list and choose AV, Video, or the label assigned to that analog input.
- If no picture appears, re-seat every plug and verify that each jack is an input. The Wii menu should appear at the selected source after the console finishes starting.
When the TV has no yellow jack, do not guess that any green jack will work. Confirm the yellow-ringed composite function in Samsung’s model documentation or obtain the model-specific breakout adapter.

- NOTE: Some devices’ auto-setting of screen resolution is 480i instead of 480p, which may not support games at 240p/480i over HDMI. If you switch to 480p mode they may work over HDMI. it can't be connected to the switch/splitter, only connect directly to the TV, monitor, projector. This adapter not support for Wii Mini
- Extra Audio Jack: Although HDMI output provides audio output, an extra 3.5mm audio jack allows you to connect a speaker or headphone. Even the night owls can enjoy playing in the midnight and no need to worry about disturbing others.
- Plug and Play: Super easy to operate. No setting and no need to install the drivers. Just simply hook it up the Wii and plug the HDMI directly into the monitor and BOOM enjoying the games with optimal viewing.
- Small in Size: PORTHOLIC Wii to HDMI Adapter with size of 6 x 3 x 1.9cm, is smaller than a Zippo. Small but powerful. It does not occupy any space on your table by hooking up the back of Wii. No more tangling cords, just one cable.
Use component video for the Wii’s 480p option
Component is the correct choice when the Samsung provides component inputs and you want the Wii’s progressive-scan mode. Nintendo states that 480p is available only with a Wii Component Video Cable connected to the console’s Digital AV Out port. The cable is sold separately, and its five plugs must be connected correctly.
- With both devices off, connect the component cable to the Wii’s Digital AV Out port.
- Connect the green Y plug to the TV’s green Y jack, the blue Pb/Cb plug to blue, and the red Pr/Cr plug to red component video. These three plugs carry video only.
- Connect the cable’s white audio plug to left/mono audio and its other red plug to right audio. Use the audio inputs paired with the component group, following the labels on the Samsung set.
- Power on the TV and Wii, open the source list, and select Component.
- On the Wii, open Wii Options, choose Wii Settings, select Screen, then TV Resolution. Choose EDTV or HDTV (480p) and confirm. If the option is unavailable, the console is not detecting a compatible component connection.
Not every Wii game supports progressive scan. A game may therefore remain at 480i even after the console is set to 480p. Do not select 720p or 1080p expecting native Wii output; those are not native Wii resolutions identified by Nintendo’s setup instructions.
Connect an HDMI-only Samsung TV with a converter
If the television has no compatible composite or component input, an analog-to-HDMI converter is the practical route. The converter receives the Wii’s yellow-white-red signal and outputs HDMI for the Samsung. Samsung’s support guidance describes an appropriate adapter or converter for older consoles when a modern set lacks Cinch/RCA inputs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Confirm that the converter listing explicitly accepts composite RCA input and provides HDMI output. Check whether it includes a power supply or requires a separate USB or mains connection.
- Connect the Wii AV Multi Out plug to the Wii.
- Connect yellow video, white left/mono audio, and red right audio from the Wii cable to the converter’s matching composite inputs.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the converter’s HDMI output to an unused HDMI input on the Samsung TV.
- Power the converter exactly as its manufacturer specifies, then turn on the Wii and television.
- Open the Samsung source list and select the numbered HDMI port used by the converter.
Converter specifications differ substantially. The cited official material does not establish that one converter works with every Wii revision and Samsung model, and it does not provide a comparative image-quality or latency test. Treat compatibility, power requirements, and the converter’s documented signal support as purchase checks rather than assuming that every inexpensive dongle behaves identically.

Select the correct Samsung source
Samsung televisions generally expose inputs through a Source, Input, or Connected Devices button, but the wording and menu path depend on model, software region, and year. Choose AV for the yellow/white/red connection, Component for the five-plug component connection, or the specific HDMI number used by a converter. If the TV does not auto-detect the Wii, select that source manually. Samsung’s console guide was updated on 18 August 2026, yet its labels can still differ from those on an older television.
Set the Wii’s display mode correctly
Composite connection
With a standard AV cable, use the Wii’s standard-TV setting, normally 480i. The 480p choice is not available unless the console detects a Wii Component Video Cable. Selecting a progressive mode without the required cable is not a workaround for a composite connection.
Component connection
After selecting EDTV or HDTV (480p), confirm the setting on-screen. If the screen goes blank during the change, wait for the Wii’s confirmation prompt; if the setting cannot be displayed, return to the standard-TV option and check the component plugs and TV source. Individual games may not implement progressive scan.

Converter connection
Leave the Wii connected through its composite AV cable. The converter changes the connector format for the TV; it does not turn the Wii into a native 720p or 1080p source. Any scaling behavior, output format, or additional processing is specific to the converter and television.

Troubleshoot by symptom
No picture or “No signal”
- Verify that the Samsung source matches the physical connection: AV for composite, Component for component, or the correct HDMI number for a converter.
- Check that the Wii cable is inserted into the console’s AV Multi Out port and that every RCA plug is fully seated.
- Make sure the plugs are in inputs, not similarly shaped output jacks on another device.
- For an HDMI converter, confirm its power indicator or required power connection, then test the HDMI cable and another HDMI input if available.
No yellow jack on the TV
Look for a green jack ringed in yellow or marked “Video.” Some Samsung models combine AV and component functions, while others require a small model-specific adapter. Consult the manual for the full model number before ordering an accessory; do not insert the yellow plug into a component-only jack without confirmation.
Black-and-white or unstable video
- Recheck that yellow is connected to the composite-video input, not to a blue, green, or red component-video jack.
- Confirm that the Samsung is on the AV source rather than Component or an unrelated HDMI input.
- Inspect the RCA plugs and cable for a loose connection and re-seat them with the devices powered off.
These checks address the common wiring and source errors documented by Nintendo and Samsung, but the official guidance does not establish one universal cause for every black-and-white or unstable image on every model.
480p is missing
Nintendo specifies that 480p requires the Wii Component Video Cable. If you are using composite AV, the console should remain on Standard TV (480i). With component connected, verify the three video plugs and select Screen > TV Resolution in Wii Settings. A game that lacks progressive-scan support can still display at 480i.

- Confirm that the converter accepts composite RCA input rather than a different analog format.
- Use the power supply and cable arrangement specified for that converter.
- Re-seat the Wii’s RCA plugs, converter connections, and HDMI cable.
- Select the HDMI port actually used and test the converter with the TV’s other HDMI input if the manual permits.
Samsung’s general external-device and HDMI troubleshooting may be necessary, but the cited support material does not identify a Wii-specific fault or a single guaranteed fix for every converter.

- Connect the WII console to any HDMI-compatible HD device, The single-cable design eliminates screen flickering caused by multiple connections and allows for plug-and-play operation
- A built-in converter chip provides synchronized audio and video output and supports all Wdisplay modes, including NTSC 480i, 480p, and PAL 576i. Not compatible with the WII Mini
- With a single-cable connection, plug and play, no setup required. Simply connect the dongle to the WII console, then plug the HDMI cable directly into your monitor or TV
- The 5ft/150cm cable length eliminates cable tangles and extends the distance between devices without taking up too much space
- Note: 1. This adapter only converts the signal, not improves the clarity. 2. It is not compatible with the Mini. 3. Some devices automatically set their resolution to 480i instead of 480p, so you may not be able to transmit 240p/480i signals via HDMI. You can try switching to 480p, which may solve the HDMI problem. 4. It cannot be connected to a switch or splitter, only to a TV/monitor/projector. 5. It does not have an external audio interface
Wii and Wii mini compatibility limits
The original Wii can use its standard AV cable and, when the TV supports component input, a Wii Component AV Cable. Nintendo states: “The Wii mini is only compatible with Wii AV Cables.” Therefore, do not plan a Wii mini component-cable setup or expect its console to expose the component-based 480p route described above. For a Wii mini, use composite AV if the Samsung accepts it, or feed that AV signal into a suitable composite-to-HDMI converter when HDMI is the only usable input.
How to decide what to buy
- You already have a yellow composite jack: use the standard Wii AV cable; no converter is needed.
- You have component jacks and want 480p: obtain the separately sold Wii Component AV Cable and verify that the television’s component input is functional.
- You have HDMI only: choose a converter whose specifications explicitly list composite RCA input and HDMI output, and verify its power requirements.
- Your Samsung uses a small analog breakout socket: match the adapter to the complete TV model number and the manual’s port diagram.
- You own a Wii mini: stay with Wii AV Cable connectivity; Nintendo does not support the component-cable route.
None of these paths guarantees a particular third-party converter’s compatibility or picture quality. The safest sequence is to identify the TV model and ports first, then buy only the cable or adapter that matches that documented input.
Safe shutdown and cable care
Power off the Wii and TV before repeatedly changing RCA or component connections. Keep the yellow, white, and red plugs grouped with their labels, avoid forcing a plug into a jack with a different function, and support the cable near the console so the AV Multi Out connector is not pulled sideways. If you must replace a missing cable, verify that the listing is for a Wii-compatible AV cable rather than a visually similar lead for another console.
