Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a straighter pool shot, choose your aim line while standing behind the shot, then step into that line, settle into a balanced stance, and deliver the cue through a steady bridge with a relaxed grip. Work through those steps in order; changing your aim after you are down or letting your bridge shift can pull the cue off line.
How to aim a pool shot before you get down
Stand behind the cue ball and object ball so you can see the full shot. Choose the point on the object ball you intend to contact, then picture a line from the cue ball through that contact point. Once you have chosen the line, walk into the shot rather than bending down first and trying to aim from a cramped position.

Pool instructor Lee Brett advises doing most of the sighting from farther back: “Roughly 90% of sighting the object ball is done back away from the table, as you get a clearer view of the shot.” That 90% is Brett’s teaching estimate, not a measured statistic about players generally. APA’s sighting and aiming instructions explain his approach.

As you approach the shot, place your lead foot so your body and cue can settle along the line you selected. Brett recommends using the lead leg to enter the line; his method is one instructor’s system, not a universal foot-placement rule. The useful test is whether you feel stable and can move the cue forward without your body forcing it sideways.

Keep enough room for your shooting arm to swing freely. A stance around shoulder width can be a starting point, but foot spacing and direction vary with handedness, reach, and comfort. Avoid leaning so far that you feel off balance or have to twist your arm to reach the cue ball. See Brett’s stance and alignment guidance for his specific system.
Set a bridge that fits the shot
Your bridge hand rests on the cloth and forms a stable channel for the cue shaft. Spread the hand securely and guide the shaft through the opening; keep the bridge still while the cue moves through it. Lee Brett gives 6–10 inches from the cue ball as an ideal bridge-hand distance. Treat that as a practice starting point, not a fixed rule: the shot, table edge, and nearby balls may require a different placement.

Choose the bridge for the available space
| Shot situation | Bridge choice | What to prioritize |
|---|---|---|
| Open space on the cloth | Open bridge: rest the hand on the cloth and form a channel with the thumb and index finger. | A steady hand and a clear, straight path for the shaft. |
| You want the shaft held more securely | Closed bridge: curl a finger over the shaft while keeping the hand planted. | Secure guidance without squeezing or steering the cue. |
| Cue ball close to a rail | Rail bridge or another placement supported by the rail. | Stable support and enough clearance for the cue to travel. |
| Nearby ball or obstacle blocks a normal hand position | Modified bridge placement suited to the available gap. | Clearance for the cue and a delivery that remains as straight as possible. |
There is no single bridge that fits every shot. Choose the one that lets you support the shaft without moving the hand during the stroke. Brett’s bridge-hand lesson covers open, closed, rail, and obstructed situations.

Hold the cue so your arm can swing freely
Grip the cue lightly enough that your hand and forearm can move without a forced wrist or elbow action. Pool instructor Ewa Mataya Laurance recommends thinking of the shooting arm “as if it were a pendulum.” At address, a forearm close to vertical is a useful starting point: if the grip is too far forward or back, the arm may not swing comfortably through the shot.

Adjust where you hold the cue until you can draw it back and send it forward without twisting your wrist or lifting your elbow to compensate. Match the backswing to the shot’s required speed and distance rather than using one large backswing for every shot. Laurance’s stroke guidance discusses the pendulum idea and cue delivery.
Deliver the cue along the line
Once you are set, let the cue travel through the bridge toward the contact point you chose. Keep the bridge planted and your body quiet; do not add a last-second sideways correction with your grip. Follow through naturally along the same path instead of stopping the cue abruptly at the cue ball.

Practice a straighter pool shot
- Set up a simple straight-in shot at modest speed.
- Stand behind the shot, choose the object-ball contact point, and visualize the line.
- Step into the line, settle into a balanced stance, and place a stable bridge at a comfortable distance.
- Check that your shooting forearm can swing freely and your grip is relaxed.
- Stroke through the cue ball without moving the bridge or making a sideways correction.
- Notice whether the tip followed the intended line and whether your bridge or body shifted. Adjust one part of your setup at a time on the next attempt.

Optional equipment: chalk, gloves, and mechanical bridges
Equipment can help with particular handling needs, but it cannot replace a clear aim line or a steady delivery. The World Pool-Billiard Association’s rules effective September 15, 2025 allow compatible-color chalk on the cue tip, mechanical bridges, and gloves. Chalk helps reduce miscues; a glove may improve grip or bridge-hand function; a mechanical bridge supports shots that are difficult to reach. Choose a tool for the problem it solves, then make sure you can still deliver the cue along your selected line. Read the WPA Rules of Play.
