Use YouTube’s own feedback and history controls first: choose Not interested on spoiler videos, use Don’t recommend channel for repeat sources, and delete or pause watch and search history that is feeding the recommendations. If the images or titles themselves are the problem, a desktop browser extension can hide thumbnails, remove recommendation surfaces, or filter specified spoiler words and channels. Those extensions are optional, third-party tools whose store descriptions are not guarantees that every spoiler will be caught.
Why game spoilers keep appearing on YouTube
YouTube recommendations are not one feed controlled by one switch. They can appear on Home, Up next, Shorts, destination pages and channel pages, and YouTube says those surfaces use different signals. Watch history is especially important for Home, while search activity and other Google Account activity can also affect recommendations, search results, notifications and suggested videos elsewhere. A thumbnail can spoil a boss, ending or character before you read the title. A title can reveal the same information even when the thumbnail is hidden. You therefore need to decide whether you want to train YouTube’s recommendations, remove discovery surfaces, mask visual and text cues, or combine all three. No built-in YouTube setting is documented as a universal game-spoiler filter.
The built-in controls to use first
These controls work on supported YouTube recommendation surfaces and do not require installing software. Use them before adding an extension, because they reduce the source of unwanted recommendations rather than merely covering what you see.

Mark an individual video
- On Home or Watch next, open the video’s More menu (the three-dot menu).
- Select Not interested.
- If YouTube offers a reason, choose the closest explanation. This gives the service more specific feedback than simply scrolling past the item. The available feedback options can vary by surface and device; the official instructions are at YouTube Help.
Block a repeat source from recommendations
- Open the More menu on a recommendation from the offending channel.
- Select Don’t recommend channel when it appears.
- Continue using Not interested on other sources. Channel-level feedback is targeted to recommendations and is not a guarantee that a direct search, subscription page or external link will be hidden.
Remove the history signals that are attracting spoilers
YouTube says Home recommendations primarily rely on watch history. Deleting watched videos removes those entries from the basis for future recommendations. Pausing history stops new watched videos from being saved while the pause is active. The same principle applies to search history: YouTube says deleted searches no longer influence recommendations, and searches made in YouTube Incognito mode are not saved to search history. Clean up a completed game search
- Open YouTube’s history controls on the device where you watched or searched for the game.
- Delete the related watch-history entries rather than deleting unrelated viewing you still want YouTube to remember.
- Delete searches for the game, characters, missions or ending that you no longer want influencing suggestions.
- Return to Home and use Not interested on remaining spoiler recommendations. History cleanup changes the signals; feedback handles individual items that still surface.
Deleting only one video may not remove every signal. If several related videos and searches remain, YouTube can continue interpreting that activity as interest in the game. Conversely, deleting or pausing too much history removes useful personalization. Choose the narrowest cleanup that solves the problem.
Use a temporary history pause for spoiler-free research
Pause watch and search history before looking up a game you have not finished. This prevents that session from becoming a strong recommendation signal. YouTube specifically advises remembering to resume history after a temporary pause if you want history-based recommendations again. The setting affects the account and device context covered by YouTube’s history controls, so check that you are using the intended account before researching.
For a one-off search, YouTube Incognito is another way to keep searches out of search history, according to YouTube’s search-history guidance. Incognito does not promise that every other recommendation signal disappears, so it should complement—not replace—care with titles and channels you open.

Browser extensions that hide thumbnails or recommendations
Desktop browser add-ons can mask what YouTube’s own controls do not: the thumbnail and sometimes the title itself. Store pages describe the features below; availability, permissions, user counts and compatibility can change, and the listings are not independent tests.

Install with a narrow, reversible setup
- Open the current Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons page linked above, rather than downloading an extension from an unrelated mirror.
- Read the current description, update information and requested permissions. Store descriptions are vendor claims; do not treat them as proof of complete spoiler detection.
- Start with the least disruptive mode: thumbnail hiding or a short keyword list. Add broad recommendation removal only if you are comfortable losing discovery features.
- Enter the game title, common abbreviations, character names and channels that are repeatedly spoiling you. Add terms gradually so ordinary, non-spoiler videos are not unnecessarily hidden.
- Open a few ordinary YouTube pages and confirm that the extension behaves as expected. If it hides too much, disable a rule or the extension from the browser’s extension manager.
These add-ons are browser software. Do not assume that an extension installed in a desktop browser changes the YouTube app on a phone, television, streaming device or console. YouTube provides device-specific instructions for some built-in controls; consult its recommendation-feedback page and watch-history page for the device you actually use.
A practical setup for different devices
Desktop or laptop browser
Use the built-in feedback controls on Home and Watch next, clean the relevant watch and search history, then add one masking strategy. A selective thumbnail or keyword filter preserves more browsing than hiding every recommendation. If even a blurred thumbnail is too risky, a broad recommendation-hiding extension is safer visually but removes more of YouTube’s discovery interface.

Rely on YouTube’s in-app Not interested and channel-feedback options where shown, plus watch- and search-history controls. Browser extensions listed for Chrome or Firefox should not be treated as app features. If a temporary research session is the concern, pause history before searching and resume it afterward if desired.

Smart TV, streaming device or game console
Use the built-in feedback and history options available in that YouTube app or manage the account’s history from another signed-in device. A desktop browser add-on does not automatically carry over to a television or console app. Because recommendation surfaces differ, check Home, Up next and Shorts separately where those sections exist.
Build a spoiler keyword list that works without blocking everything
Keyword filtering is only as good as the terms it receives. Start with the exact game title and its common short form. Then add the names of characters, bosses, locations, missions, endings and sequel labels that you already know are spoiler-sensitive. Include alternate spellings and punctuation if the extension supports them. Add a channel rule for creators who repeatedly reveal plot points rather than trying to anticipate every phrase they might use.
- Use narrow terms first: begin with the game title and the most obvious ending-related words.
- Separate games: do not put a whole publisher or genre into one block list unless you are willing to hide unrelated videos.
- Review false positives: a broad character name can hide guides, reviews or soundtrack videos that contain no plot reveal.
- Update after releases: new expansions and sequel names introduce terms your original list cannot know.
Filtering cannot recognize every visual spoiler. A thumbnail may show a scene without naming it, and a creator may use an unrelated title. That is why keyword rules work best alongside YouTube feedback and history hygiene, not as a guarantee on their own.

Recommendation feedback
Not interested and Don’t recommend channel preserve most of YouTube’s interface, but they are signals rather than a topic-wide firewall. They also depend on the option being available on that recommendation surface.

History deletion or pausing
Deleting history removes recommendation signals and the corresponding record of what you watched. Pausing history prevents new viewing from being recorded during the pause. YouTube may remove Home recommendations when there is no significant watch history and the viewer does not want history-based recommendations, but that does not establish that every Up next, Shorts or channel-page suggestion disappears. Broad hiding
Removing Home, sidebar, Shorts or end-screen suggestions reduces the number of spoiler opportunities, but it also removes discovery and convenient links to related videos. This is appropriate when avoiding accidental exposure matters more than finding new content.
Selective masking
Thumbnail, title and keyword masking preserves more of the site, but it can miss an unrecognized spoiler and can hide harmless videos that happen to match your terms. Treat store-listed behavior as a feature description, not a performance guarantee.

A recommendation returns after you dismissed it
Use Not interested again and apply Don’t recommend channel if the same source keeps appearing. Then inspect watch and search history for other related entries. Feedback affects recommendations; a direct search result, subscription page or shared link may still show the video.
Home is cleaner but Up next or Shorts is not
YouTube identifies Home, Up next, Shorts and other locations as separate recommendation surfaces with different signals. Apply feedback on the surface where the spoiler appears and consider a browser filter if you need visual masking across several pages. Do not assume that changing Home automatically changes every other surface.
History changes did not remove every suggestion
Check both watch and search history, and remember that Google Account activity can influence recommendations and suggested videos in other places. Deleting one history type does not erase the other. Use watch-history controls and search-history controls separately.
An extension hides too much or stops working
Disable the newest keyword or channel rule first, then test whether the problem is a false positive or a broader compatibility change. Recheck the current store listing, permissions and supported browser version. Extension availability and site compatibility can change; uninstalling or disabling the add-on is the quickest way to return to YouTube’s normal interface.

You still see revealing titles after thumbnails are hidden
Thumbnail masking addresses imagery, not necessarily text. Add title and keyword filtering if your chosen extension supports it, or use a broad recommendation-hiding approach. Continue using YouTube’s feedback controls so the underlying recommendation stream also improves.
Recommended order for the strongest practical protection
- Before researching: pause watch and search history, or use YouTube Incognito for searches you do not want saved.
- When a spoiler appears: open the More menu and choose Not interested.
- When a source repeats the behavior: choose Don’t recommend channel where available.
- After an accidental research binge: delete the related watch and search entries that are now feeding recommendations.
- On a supported desktop browser: choose selective thumbnail or keyword masking if you still need to browse, or broad recommendation removal if discovery is less important.
- Maintain the setup: expand keyword and channel rules as new spoiler sources appear, and periodically review permissions and compatibility for any extension.
This layered approach separates three jobs: YouTube feedback tunes what it recommends, history controls remove the signals that caused the recommendations, and browser tools conceal or remove what remains visible. Use the least aggressive layer that protects the game you are trying to finish.
