Use a reputable VPN to hide your public IP from ordinary websites, Tor Browser when you need stronger browser-level privacy, or a VPN router to cover devices throughout your home. Incognito mode does not hide an IP address, and no tool guarantees perfect anonymity. Each method changes who can see your traffic, so the right choice depends on whether you need device-wide privacy, browser anonymity, or whole-home coverage.
What hiding your IP address actually does
Your public IP is the network address that websites and online services normally receive from your connection. Hiding it means making the destination see a relay’s address instead of the address assigned to your connection.
That does not erase every identifying signal. Accounts you sign into, cookies, browser fingerprints, payment details, torrents, plug-ins and documents opened outside a protected browser can still connect activity to you. Think of IP masking as one privacy control, not an anonymity switch.
A VPN moves trust to the VPN operator: the destination generally sees the VPN server, while the VPN can observe the connection and may be able to associate traffic with your account. Tor distributes trust across several relays and is designed to resist browser fingerprinting, but it protects only applications configured to use it. A proxy can relay a request, but a basic proxy usually provides less protection than a well-configured VPN or Tor.

VPN, Tor, proxy or incognito? A practical comparison
| Method | What the destination sees | Who can observe the connection | Coverage | Encryption and main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VPN | VPN server IP | Your VPN provider sees the tunnel and can potentially see traffic metadata; your ISP sees that you connected to a VPN | Usually the whole device, depending on split-tunnel settings | Encrypted tunnel to the VPN server; trust and logging move to the provider |
| Tor Browser | Tor exit relay IP | Several Tor relay operators see different parts of the route; your ISP can see a Tor connection | Only Tor Browser and applications deliberately configured for Tor | Tor encrypts traffic inside the Tor network; HTTPS is still needed from the exit to the final site |
| Web proxy | Proxy IP | The proxy operator can observe requests; your network operator can still observe the connection to the proxy | Often one browser or application | A single proxy concentrates trust and may not encrypt the full path |
| Incognito/private tab | Your normal public IP | ISP, employer, school or network operator can still observe traffic | Only local browser history and session storage are reduced | Not an IP-masking tool; sites still see information you submit |
| VPN router | VPN server IP | VPN provider sees the household tunnel; the ISP sees the router’s VPN connection | Devices routed through that gateway, including some that cannot run VPN apps | Requires secure router configuration, suitable firmware and sufficient throughput |
How to hide your IP with a VPN
1. Vet the provider before installing
The Federal Trade Commission warns that a VPN app generally is not going to make you entirely anonymous. Some apps request broad permissions, fail to encrypt all traffic or share information with third parties. Read the privacy policy and terms, check the permissions requested, confirm supported protocols, and look for a kill switch and DNS/IPv6 leak protection. Prefer a provider with an established security reputation and a clear explanation of what it records.
2. Install from an official source
- Download the provider’s desktop or mobile application from its official website or the operating system’s official app store.
- Update your operating system first, then install the current VPN release.
- Sign in only through the provider’s genuine application or website. Avoid unofficial “free VPN” packages and modified installers.
3. Connect and turn on leak protection
- Open the VPN app and select a server. A nearby server is usually the sensible starting point when responsiveness matters; a different country is useful only when you have a legitimate location requirement.
- Enable the kill switch (sometimes called network lock) so traffic is blocked if the encrypted tunnel drops.
- Enable DNS leak protection and, where offered, IPv6 leak protection. These settings prevent requests from bypassing the tunnel.
- Leave split tunneling disabled when you want every application covered. If you enable it, record which applications are excluded.
4. Verify the result
Before handling sensitive work, disconnect and reconnect the VPN, then check the public IP shown by a trusted IP-checking service. Confirm that the displayed address belongs to the VPN location, and test a DNS-leak checker and an IPv6-capable connection if your network supports IPv6. Repeat the test after sleep or network changes; a tunnel that works on Wi-Fi can behave differently on mobile data.
What your ISP and VPN provider can still see
Your ISP can normally see that your device is connected to a VPN server and can observe connection timing and volume. The VPN provider becomes the party you must trust with the tunnel and any information it can associate with your account. The destination site sees the VPN address, but it can still identify you through a login, a cookie, a browser fingerprint or information you enter.
How to use Tor Browser for stronger browser privacy
Tor Browser routes traffic through a series of relays and is designed to hide your source IP, browsing habits and device details used for fingerprinting from visited sites. The Tor Project also says that perfect anonymity is generally impossible, even with Tor.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Download Tor Browser from the Tor Project’s official distribution channel and keep it updated.
- Use the Tor Browser window for the activity you want routed through Tor. Other browsers and applications continue to use their normal network path.
- Keep the default privacy settings unless you understand the fingerprinting trade-offs of changing them. Do not install extra plug-ins or extensions.
- Use HTTPS for the final website. Tor encrypts traffic within the Tor network, but it does not by itself encrypt the connection between an exit relay and a site that is not using HTTPS.
- Do not sign into an account that identifies you if anonymity is the goal. Treat every name, email address, file upload and payment detail as a possible link to your identity.
Do not torrent over Tor. Torrent applications can ignore proxy settings and reveal your real IP in tracker requests. Do not open downloaded documents in an external application while you are online; the document may fetch resources outside Tor. Tor protects only applications configured to use it.

The Tor Project’s privacy policy effective October 30, 2025 says Tor Browser does not collect IP addresses, browsing history, device IDs or location. That is the project’s published policy for Tor Browser, not a guarantee about every third-party application that uses the Tor network.
When a proxy is enough—and when it is not
A web proxy receives your request, sends it to the destination and relays the response, so the destination sees the proxy’s IP rather than the original one. This can be useful for a narrowly scoped browser task or a service that explicitly requires a proxy.
Check whether the proxy uses HTTPS from your browser to the proxy and whether it states what it logs. A basic single proxy is a single point of trust and may leave parts of the route unencrypted. Do not treat an unknown “free proxy” list as a privacy service.

Incognito or private tabs mainly remove selected local history, cookies and session data when the window closes. They do not change the public IP sent to websites, stop an ISP or network administrator from observing traffic, or prevent a site from tracking information you provide. Use private browsing to reduce traces on a shared device—not to mask your network address.
Cover every device with a VPN router
A VPN router creates a gateway so multiple household devices use the VPN connection, including devices that cannot install VPN software themselves. It can be practical for televisions, game consoles and smart-home equipment, but it does not make the VPN provider trustworthy or remove browser fingerprinting and account-based identification.

- Confirm that the router firmware supports the VPN protocol your provider allows and that the provider permits router use.
- Update the router firmware, replace its default administrator password and disable unused administration features.
- Configure the VPN profile on the router, including the provider’s server address, credentials and certificate or key material.
- Route only the networks and devices you intend to protect. Keep a separate management path so a failed tunnel does not lock you out.
- Enable a kill switch or firewall rule that blocks internet traffic when the tunnel is down.
- Test public IP, DNS and IPv6 behavior from several device types. Check throughput under load and confirm that local services such as printing still work.
CISA guidance for VPN gateways emphasizes minimal exposure, strong cryptography, disabling unused features and secure configuration. Keep the router and VPN profile maintained; a one-time setup is not a permanent security guarantee.

If your practical task is obtaining a clean screenshot of a website rather than hiding your own IP, ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers.
One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The API does not make your browsing anonymous; it automates the capture itself.
cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the parameter reference and complete options in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also supports full-page and element captures, device presets, custom CSS and JavaScript, click and wait actions, request blocking, headers and cookies, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks and bulk capture. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Prevent the leaks that defeat IP masking
- Use official downloads and keep your VPN, Tor Browser, operating system and router firmware current.
- Keep HTTPS enabled, especially when using Tor.
- Do not log into identifying accounts when anonymity is the objective.
- Do not torrent through Tor, and do not open downloaded documents externally while connected to Tor.
- Check DNS and IPv6 behavior yourself instead of assuming the app’s default settings are sufficient.
- Review permissions and data-sharing practices before installing a free VPN or residential-proxy app. On March 12, 2026, the FBI warned that some free VPNs may place devices into residential proxy networks without clear consent.
- Remember that browser fingerprints, plug-ins, cookies and personal information can identify you even when the destination cannot see your normal IP.
Troubleshooting common failures
Websites still show your normal IP
Check whether the VPN is connected at the system level, whether split tunneling excludes the browser, and whether IPv6 or DNS requests are bypassing the tunnel. Reconnect, enable leak protection and retest from a different network.

The VPN disconnects and apps continue working
The kill switch may be disabled or limited to selected applications. Turn on the provider’s network-lock mode and verify it by disconnecting the tunnel briefly; protected traffic should stop rather than fall back to the ordinary connection.
Tor is slow or a site blocks it
Tor traffic passes through multiple relays, and some destinations restrict exit-relay addresses. Do not install plug-ins or change identifying browser settings to “fix” fingerprinting. Use a VPN for ordinary device-wide privacy when Tor’s browser-only coverage or site compatibility is unsuitable.
A router VPN works on one device but not another
Check which LAN or guest network the device uses, whether the router policy routes that subnet through the tunnel, and whether the device prefers IPv6. Update firmware, review firewall rules and repeat the public-IP and DNS tests on the affected device.
A free VPN asks for unusual access
Stop installation and read the permissions, terms and privacy policy. Broad access, unclear ownership or undisclosed data sharing is a reason to choose another provider. Remove the app if you cannot establish what it does with traffic data.

FAQ
Can a VPN protect applications that are not in my browser?
Usually yes when the VPN runs at the operating-system level, but split tunneling, application-specific proxy settings and leak paths can exclude programs. Verify coverage rather than assuming every app follows the tunnel.
Does Tor Browser protect my other browsers and apps?
No. Tor protects Tor Browser and only other applications deliberately configured to use Tor. A separate browser, torrent client or document viewer can use the ordinary connection.
