The cleanest safe setup uses either a purpose-built in-wall TV power kit installed for your wall, or a surface raceway that keeps every cable outside the wall. Do not push the television’s ordinary power cord or an extension cord through drywall. If you can place the television near an existing outlet, arranging the screen or furniture to obscure the cord is another simple option.
Choose the cable-hiding method before drilling
Wall mounting changes cable routing. A television usually needs a power connection plus one or more signal cables, such as HDMI, Ethernet, optical audio or antenna coax. The best route depends on the wall, the number and length of cables, whether you can cut openings, and whether the power connection must be moved.

| Method | Best fit | What you must accept or verify |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose-built in-wall power relocation kit | An appropriate framed wall where you want the power connection and signal cables hidden | You will make wall openings and must follow the exact kit instructions, verify wall suitability and cable capacity, and check local electrical requirements. |
| Surface raceway or cord cover | You want to avoid cutting drywall, or the wall is unsuitable for an in-wall route | A channel remains visible, although a paintable design can blend with the wall. Confirm that the product configuration supports the cables you intend to route. |
| Existing-outlet and furniture layout | The television can be positioned close enough to an outlet for the original cord to be concealed by the screen or furniture | Placement may be limited. This does not make it acceptable to run the cord inside the wall. |
| New or relocated receptacle | You want a permanent outlet directly behind or beside the television | This is electrical installation work subject to local requirements. Use a qualified electrician when the work is outside your competence or local rules require one. |
Why an ordinary TV power cord must not go inside the wall
A television’s detachable cord is a flexible power supply cord, not an in-wall wiring system. NFPA-hosted material reproducing NEC 400.12 lists flexible cords, flexible cables, cord sets and power supply cords among uses not permitted “Where run through holes in walls, structural ceilings, suspended ceilings, dropped ceilings, or floors.” The same provision also addresses cords concealed by walls.

Inspect the wall and plan the route
Confirm the wall construction
Purpose-built kits are intended for particular wall constructions and installation conditions. Before purchasing, determine whether the mounting area is a suitable framed cavity and whether the kit permits the wall thickness and opening locations you have. A wall that cannot safely accept the specified openings is a raceway candidate instead.
Locate studs, corner framing, fire blocking and any visible plumbing or electrical routes. Do not cut until you understand what is behind both the television and the lower connection point. Follow the mount and kit instructions for clearance around the bracket and for keeping cables away from hazards.

Write down each connection the television needs now and the ones you may add soon. Typical examples are HDMI from a game console or receiver, Ethernet, an antenna coaxial cable, USB extension, optical audio and a control cable. Measure the route rather than buying only the straight-line distance; include vertical drops, bends and enough slack to remove the television without pulling on a connector.
Decide where the lower connection will be
For an in-wall installation, the upper opening is normally behind the television and the lower opening is near the equipment cabinet or an existing receptacle. Leave room to plug in sources and to service the television. A lower opening that is hidden behind a cabinet can be neater, but it must remain accessible for inspection and future changes.

Check the kit contents and listing
Before opening the wall, compare the package contents with the manufacturer’s instructions. Verify the included power harness, receptacles, low-voltage pass-throughs, cable capacity, tools and any limitations on cable types. Current listing or certification details and installation instructions take priority over a generic online diagram.
Option 1: install a purpose-built in-wall TV power kit
An in-wall power relocation kit is a product category designed to place a proper power connection at the television while routing approved signal cables through the wall cavity. SANUS describes its VuePoint FPACM1 as an in-wall cable kit for wall-mounted televisions that routes AV and power. Treat that description as the manufacturer’s intended use; it does not replace the installation manual or local requirements.
Recommended Free Tools
Step 1: Read the complete instructions first
- Confirm that the kit is approved for your wall construction and that its upper and lower boxes can be installed where you plan to cut.
- Identify which parts carry mains power and which openings are for low-voltage cables. Do not substitute an ordinary extension cord for the supplied power components.
- Check the maximum number, type and diameter of signal cables the kit allows.
- Confirm the required tools, opening dimensions and any rules about stud locations, insulation or fire blocking.
Step 2: Mark the television and lower openings
Use the mounting bracket template and the kit’s dimensions, not the television’s bezel, to mark the upper opening. Mark the lower opening where the equipment can reach it without a sharp bend. Use a level, and verify that neither opening conflicts with the bracket, a stud or a hidden service.
Step 3: De-energize and inspect
Turn off power to nearby circuits when the instructions call for it and verify that the work area is safe. A noncontact tester is not a substitute for understanding the circuit. If you cannot identify the wiring or obstruction safely, stop and obtain professional help.
Step 4: Cut only the specified openings
Use the supplied template or dimensions. Make clean openings large enough for the listed boxes, but do not enlarge them casually. Keep the cutout pieces in case the installation must be reversed. Never force a box into a cavity that does not meet the kit’s requirements.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Step 5: Install the power components and signal path
Install the upper and lower power assemblies, route the supplied harness as directed and secure each component. Feed HDMI and other low-voltage cables through the permitted path. Keep power and signal routing arranged as the instructions specify, and do not add cables that exceed the kit’s capacity.
Step 6: Connect, test and finish the mount
With the television still accessible, connect the power and signal cables and test every source. Confirm that the television powers on, each HDMI input displays correctly, network or antenna connections work and no connector is under tension. Only then attach the television fully to the bracket and close the openings with the supplied plates or trim.
What to verify after installation
- The power connection is made through the kit’s approved components, not through a hidden extension cord.
- Every cable has enough slack for service without pulling the television off the mount.
- The lower connection remains reachable if a source or cable must be replaced.
- The wall plates sit flat and the mount does not pinch a cable.
Option 2: hide everything in a surface raceway
A raceway keeps the route on the wall, so it avoids a cavity installation. It is useful when you rent, do not want to cut drywall, cannot verify the wall cavity, or simply prefer a reversible project. Legrand identifies its Wiremold CMK70 as an on-wall pre-wired TV power and cable kit. Its product description includes low-voltage cable routing for HDMI, a 54-inch harness, a 6-foot power cord, a hole saw and fish tape. Because the product is described as on-wall, do not classify it as a purely in-wall solution.
Step 1: Choose a raceway sized for the real cable bundle
Count the cables and check the channel’s internal dimensions. HDMI connectors can require more room than the cable itself, and adding a future cable may require a larger channel now. Confirm whether the selected configuration is intended to carry power, low-voltage cables or both.
Step 2: Plan a straight, serviceable route
Run the channel vertically or horizontally with gentle bends. Keep it clear of the mount’s moving joints and leave enough slack at both ends. A route hidden behind the television can be short, while the visible drop to a console can follow a corner or trim line.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Step 3: Clean and prepare the wall
Follow the raceway’s mounting method. Adhesive products need a clean, dry surface and may fail on dusty, textured or freshly painted walls. Mechanical fasteners may be preferable where the product permits them. Do not rely on adhesive alone for a heavy assembly unless the instructions specifically allow it.
Step 4: Install cables without crushing them
Place cables in the channel with the required separation and bend radius. Avoid tight turns that stress HDMI or optical connectors. Close the cover only after checking that no cable is trapped under an edge.
Step 5: Blend or conceal the channel
Paintable raceways can be matched to the wall after the manufacturer’s preparation requirements are met. Do not paint over removable covers, connectors or ventilation openings. A channel aligned with trim, a corner or the television’s centerline is usually less distracting than a diagonal route.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Option 3: use the existing outlet and furniture
If an outlet is already close to the television, the simplest solution may be to keep the original power cord outside the wall and hide it behind the screen, a media console or a carefully placed raceway. This avoids opening the wall and avoids electrical alterations.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Measure the cord’s reach with the television on its bracket and able to tilt or swivel. Do not leave the cord stretched, sharply bent or pressed between the mount and the wall. If the outlet is too far away, use a surface route or a purpose-built kit rather than hiding the cord inside the wall.

When a new or relocated receptacle is the right answer
A new receptacle can provide the cleanest permanent finish, but it is a separate electrical project from routing HDMI and other signal cables. The work may involve circuit loading, box placement, cable protection, grounding and local permit or inspection rules. The available sources do not establish requirements for every locality.
Ask a qualified electrician to handle the work when you are uncertain about the circuit, cannot verify what is inside the wall, need to extend wiring, or local rules require licensed installation. Do not convert a low-voltage pass-through opening into an improvised power outlet.
Plan signal cables for present and future equipment
HDMI
Choose a route that lets you replace an HDMI cable later. Avoid sealing connectors permanently inside the wall unless the kit specifically provides an approved, serviceable method. Label both ends before closing the route, especially when several identical cables are installed.
Ethernet, antenna and audio
Keep each cable within the product’s permitted category and bend limits. Optical audio cables can be damaged by tight bends; coaxial cable can lose performance when crushed. If a cable type is not listed in the kit or raceway instructions, confirm compatibility before installation.
Length and slack
Measure the complete path, then allow enough slack to disconnect the television and pull equipment forward. Excess cable should be coiled loosely, never folded into a tight knot behind the set.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
The television has no power after mounting
- Check that the kit’s upper and lower power connections are fully seated and that the circuit is energized.
- Verify that the television cord is connected to the kit’s intended receptacle rather than a low-voltage opening.
- If a breaker trips repeatedly, disconnect the equipment and stop troubleshooting until the circuit is inspected by a qualified professional.
An HDMI source works intermittently
- Power down the equipment and reseat both connectors.
- Look for a sharply bent or pinched cable at the mount or raceway cover.
- Test the cable outside the wall. Replace it only after confirming that the problem is the cable rather than the source or display.
The wall plate or raceway will not sit flat
- Check whether a stud, insulation or an oversized cable bundle is behind the opening.
- Do not force the plate or enlarge the opening beyond the product instructions.
- Reduce the bundle only by removing unnecessary cables; never remove required power components.
The route is visible despite the installation
- For a raceway, realign it with trim or a corner and use a paintable cover if the product permits.
- For an in-wall kit, verify that the lower opening is concealed by furniture without blocking access.
- Do not cover a connection permanently just to improve appearance.
Shopping and installation checklist
- Wall construction and cavity suitability verified.
- Studs, blocking, plumbing and existing wiring located before cutting.
- Every current cable listed, measured and checked against the kit’s capacity.
- Purpose-built in-wall power kit selected instead of an ordinary extension cord.
- Package contents, installation manual and current listing or certification reviewed.
- Local electrical requirements checked before cutting or relocating power.
- Upper and lower openings positioned for service access.
- Cables tested before the television is fully secured.
- Slack left for future replacement and mount movement.
Which method should you use?
Choose an in-wall power relocation kit when the wall is suitable, you accept making openings and you want both power and signal cables concealed. Choose a surface raceway when you want the least invasive route or cannot verify the wall cavity. Use the existing outlet and furniture when placement makes the original cord short and unobtrusive. Choose a new receptacle only as a proper electrical installation, not as a shortcut for hiding a cord.
