What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Short answer: An ordinary webpage cannot permanently or reliably remove the browser’s address bar. Use browser fullscreen for a temporary immersive view, the Fullscreen API when your site needs to request that mode, server-side routing or the History API to clean up a displayed URL, a Progressive Web App (PWA) for an installed app-like window, or managed kiosk mode for dedicated devices.
The address bar and the URL are different things: fullscreen can hide browser controls without changing the URL, while routing can change the visible URL without hiding the address bar. Neither approach makes the page, its requests, or its real destination secret.

Hide the address bar as a browser user
Windows and Linux
On many desktop keyboards, press F11 to toggle the browser’s fullscreen mode. Tabs, bookmarks, the toolbar, and the address bar may disappear. Press F11 again, or use the browser’s exit-fullscreen control, to restore them.
F11 is common rather than universal. The shortcut can vary by browser, operating system, keyboard, and device. If it does not work, open the browser’s View menu and choose its fullscreen option.

macOS
Use the browser’s View menu or its fullscreen shortcut. Chrome guidance identifies Control–Command–F as a fullscreen toggle in the relevant macOS context. Check the exact menu label for your browser and version.
Fullscreen hides the controls visually; it does not disable browser navigation. Keyboard commands, browser menus, or moving the pointer to the top edge may still reveal controls, depending on the browser and operating system.
Mobile browsers
Mobile browsers manage address-bar visibility themselves. Scrolling can collapse the bar on some devices, but that is not a webpage permanently hiding it. Fullscreen, viewport sizing, and installed-app behavior vary between browsers and platforms. Chrome documents how URL-bar visibility can affect the viewport and how a locked fullscreen state uses the available screen height: Chrome’s URL-bar and viewport guidance.

Request fullscreen from a website
The Fullscreen API lets a page request fullscreen for a selected element. It is intended for immersive content such as games, presentations, video players, canvases, and interactive applications—not for permanently taking control of browser navigation.
A request should normally happen in response to a user action, such as clicking a clearly labelled button:

To leave fullscreen programmatically:
await document.exitFullscreen();
You can check the current state with:
document.fullscreenEnabled
document.fullscreenElement
The browser may reject the request because there is no valid user gesture, the context is embedded or restricted, permission is unavailable, or the environment does not support the feature. Treat fullscreen as an optional enhancement: the page should remain usable if the request fails.
Design fullscreen so users can escape
Provide a visible, accessible “Exit fullscreen” control where it makes sense, and explain how to return to the normal browser view. Users retain browser-level ways to exit fullscreen, and the browser—not page JavaScript—controls the permission and exit behavior.
Fullscreen hides browser UI while it is active. It does not remove the URL from existence, prevent users from copying or inspecting it, or stop them from opening the page in a normal tab.
Change the visible URL instead of hiding the address bar
If your real problem is a filename, query string, or internal route, use URL design and routing. For example, serve a clean public route such as https://example.com/about while the application internally handles the request that might otherwise have appeared as about.php.
Use server-side routing for durable clean URLs
Server or application routing is the preferred long-term solution because the clean URL can be bookmarked, shared, indexed, and loaded directly. Configure the server to map the public route to the correct handler, then test:

When the current page is already loaded and you want to replace the displayed route without a reload:
history.replaceState(null, "", "/dashboard");
According to MDN’s replaceState() documentation, this modifies the current history entry and requires a valid same-origin URL. It does not navigate to the new URL by itself.
Use replaceState() when the old address should not remain as a separate Back-button step. Use pushState() when the change represents a new application view that users should be able to revisit with Back:
history.pushState({}, "", "/settings");
Neither method hides the address bar. Neither erases a request that has already reached the server, removes information from network tools, or protects sensitive data that was already placed in a URL. Do not put secrets, access tokens, or private information in URLs in the first place.

Use a PWA for an app-like window
If people return to the site frequently and it should behave like an application, a Progressive Web App can launch in an app-like display mode after installation. A basic manifest might contain:
{
"name": "Example App",
"short_name": "Example",
"start_url": "/",
"display": "standalone"
}
For a more immersive application, the manifest can request:
{
"display": "fullscreen"
}
The available display modes include:
browser: the ordinary browser experience.minimal-ui: limited browser controls where supported.standalone: an app-like window without the usual address bar.fullscreen: browser UI is hidden and the app uses the available display area.
Browser support is not uniform. A browser may fall back from fullscreen to standalone, then minimal-ui, and finally browser. See MDN’s PWA display-mode reference and Chrome’s display-override documentation.
The user must install or launch the site in the app-like context for this behavior to apply. Someone who opens the ordinary HTTPS URL in a normal tab will still see normal browser controls. A PWA also does not conceal the origin: users can inspect the application, view requests, open developer tools, or launch it conventionally.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse managed kiosk mode for dedicated devices
For a museum display, check-in station, classroom terminal, point-of-sale device, or other organization-controlled hardware, the correct answer may be managed kiosk deployment. Kiosk mode is configured by an administrator or device-management system; it is not a webpage feature that a public site can force on every visitor.

A kiosk configuration can remove the traditional window frame, tabs, and omnibox and may restrict exiting or switching tasks, depending on the operating system and deployment policy. It also requires operational planning: administrator recovery, updates, network failure behavior, account permissions, and a safe escape procedure for authorized staff.
Chrome’s kiosk documentation describes a managed ChromeOS environment, but that page concerns legacy Chrome Apps and notes support changes. For a new deployment, use the current browser, ChromeOS, Windows, macOS, Linux, or device-management documentation for the exact platform and enterprise edition. Do not treat an old kiosk manifest as a universal current setup guide.
Why frames and “URL-hiding scripts” are poor solutions
Older advice sometimes suggests placing a page in a frame so the top-level address remains unchanged. This does not remove the browser’s address bar and does not conceal the framed page. Users may discover it through links, page source, developer tools, browser history, or network requests.
Framing can also cause practical problems:
- Back-button behavior and bookmarking become confusing.
- Accessibility tools may receive an unclear document structure.
- Responsive layouts, authentication, permissions, and embedded content may break.
- The framed site may refuse embedding with
X-Frame-Optionsor Content Security Policy. - The top-level URL can become misleading, complicating support and security decisions.
Browser extensions can alter a local browser’s interface, but they cannot impose that change on every visitor. They also introduce permission, compatibility, trust, and maintenance concerns.
Does hiding the URL improve security?
No. Visual concealment is not a security boundary. Even when the address bar is hidden, an informed user may inspect page source, developer tools, browser history, application storage, redirects, requests, and server responses. They may also leave fullscreen or open the same origin in a normal browser context.
Protect sensitive operations with authentication, authorization, secure session handling, HTTPS, input validation, correct server-side access checks, and careful handling of secrets. Do not rely on a hidden URL, an iframe, fullscreen, or an app-like window to protect an endpoint.
