To hide one Steam game’s achievements, ownership, playtime, status, and related activity, mark that game as Private. In the desktop client, right-click the title or open its gear menu, choose Manage, and select Mark as Private. Steam also provides the control in Properties > Privacy. This is different from hiding a game in your own Library, and it is separate from the account-wide privacy settings that control whether comparison services can read your game list.
If you want friends or a comparison site to see your library, adjust Game details rather than making your entire profile private. Steam saves profile privacy changes automatically.

Mark one game as private in the Steam desktop client
Use this method when you want to conceal activity for a single title without changing the visibility of the rest of your profile.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Steam while it is online and connected.
- Open your Library and locate the game.
- Right-click the game, or open its gear menu.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Mark as Private and confirm if Steam asks for confirmation.
Steam describes the setting this way: “Marking a game as private hides your ownership, in-game status, playtime, and activity in that game.” The setting applies to that game, not automatically to every title on the account.

Use the Properties route
You can reach the same privacy control through the title’s settings. Open the game’s context menu, choose Properties, and open Privacy. Select the option that marks the game private. This route is useful when you already have the game’s Properties window open or when the Manage submenu is not immediately visible.
Other places where Steam can mark a game private
Steam Community profile in a browser
Sign in to your Steam Community profile, open your games list, select the relevant title, and use the privacy control for that game. This is the browser equivalent of the desktop client’s per-game setting. The title is then treated as private in the same ways described below.
During a purchase
Steam also lets you mark a purchase as private from the cart. Use this when you are buying a game and do not want the purchase or subsequent game activity exposed through the normal profile activity surfaces. The cart control is a per-game choice; it does not change your account-wide profile state.
What marking a game private changes
Private status affects several different data surfaces at once. It is broader than simply suppressing achievement notifications.

| Steam surface | Effect of a private game |
|---|---|
| Ownership | Other users cannot see that you own the game through the normal profile game information. |
| Profile games list | The title no longer appears in the owner’s Community profile games list as a visible game to other users. |
| Recently Played | The game is omitted from the visible Recently Played section. |
| In-game status | Playing the title does not change your visible status to In Game in the usual way. |
| Friends’ Activity feeds | Achievement unlocks and activity such as “Played for the first time” are not sent to friends’ feeds. |
| Profile showcases | The game and its achievements disappear from showcases such as Rarest Achievements. |
| Steam Trading Cards | Trading Cards are not awarded while the game is private. |
Because the setting covers ownership, playtime, status, and activity together, it is the appropriate control when your goal is to hide achievement activity comprehensively. It is not a narrowly targeted “hide only achievements” switch.
Private game versus “Hide this game” in your Library
Steam’s Hide this game Library option is an organizational feature. It removes the title from your own Library view so that you can keep the list tidy. It does not provide the same privacy controls as marking a game private.
| Option | Primary purpose | Who is affected | What happens to the game |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hide this game | Organize your Library | You, in your own Library view | The title is hidden from your Library display; this is not the per-game activity privacy setting. |
| Mark as Private | Limit visibility of a title and its activity | Other Steam users and friends viewing normal profile activity | The title remains visible to you but is hidden from other users’ ordinary profile and activity views. |
If friends can still see activity after you merely hid the game from your Library, that is expected: Library organization and profile privacy are separate controls.
Hide activity for every game with profile privacy
For account-wide control, open Profile > Edit Profile > Privacy Settings. Steam provides three profile states:

| Profile state | General audience | Use case |
|---|---|---|
| Public | Everyone can access the profile information that your other settings allow. | Useful when you want broad profile visibility or need a comparison service to discover your account. |
| Friends Only | Steam friends can access the permitted profile information. | Useful for limiting ordinary profile viewing to people you have added on Steam. |
| Private | No general profile audience can access the restricted profile information. | Useful when you want the strongest account-wide restriction rather than a per-game exception. |
Steam says these changes save automatically, so there is no separate Save button to press. Profile visibility is a broad audience setting; it does not replace the more specific Game details and Friends list controls.
Understand the three settings that affect comparison tools
Comparison privacy is often confusing because Steam separates the visibility of your profile, your game list, and your friends list. A public profile does not guarantee that an external service can read your library.
| Setting | Controls | What a comparison service can generally do |
|---|---|---|
| Profile visibility | Overall audience for your Steam profile | Determines whether the profile is broadly accessible, limited to Steam friends, or private. |
| Game details | Whether your owned-game list and related game information can be read | Must normally be Public for an unaffiliated comparison tool to read the library. |
| Friends list | Whether the list of Steam friends is visible | Needed by tools that offer a friend picker; it is independent of profile visibility and Game details. |
Why a public profile can still look empty
Suppose your profile is set to Public but Game details is hidden. Visitors may reach the profile while a comparison site receives no usable game list. The profile setting controls access to the profile as a whole; Game details controls the library data that the comparison process needs.

Why Friends Only often fails for external comparison sites
Friends Only can allow your Steam friends to read the game information, but an unaffiliated third-party API tool is generally not authenticated as one of your friends. As a result, a setting that works for a person browsing your profile may still prevent the tool from loading your games. If the comparison service is not reading the library, set Game details: Public while keeping any other privacy limits you still need.

Use the least-open setting that meets your goal
- To hide one title while leaving the rest of your library available, mark only that title private and keep the account-level settings appropriate for the comparison.
- To let a comparison service read your games, make Game details Public. A Public profile alone is insufficient.
- To let the service select from your Steam friends, review Friends list separately.
- To stop external library access altogether, do not leave Game details Public, even if your profile itself is Public.
Steam’s built-in achievement comparisons
Steam’s Achievement Sets feature lets you compare your progress with up to three friends. The comparison can include rare achievements, completed sets, and progress in downloadable-content sets.
Why totals can differ between players
A comparison total is based on achievements that a particular player can actually earn. Totals can therefore differ between two friends because their available add-on content is different, or because some achievements are time-limited or have been archived. A lower total does not necessarily indicate less progress; it may reflect a different set of earnable achievements.
How per-game privacy affects comparisons
A game marked private is removed from the normal profile and activity surfaces used to show ownership and progress. Consequently, friends and services that rely on those surfaces cannot use that title as an ordinary visible part of a comparison. If a comparison is missing one game but can read the rest of the library, check that game’s private status before changing account-wide settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCan friends still see you playing a private game?
Private status does not make you invisible in every multiplayer situation. Steam documents two important exceptions.
Best Value
- When a private game uses Steam matchmaking, your Steam ID remains visible to other players on the same server.
- If you invite a friend, that friend can see your in-game status until you exit the game or disconnect from Steam so the friend can join.
These exceptions concern the live multiplayer session. They do not restore the normal profile game listing, Recently Played entry, achievement feed activity, or showcase visibility that private status suppresses.
Troubleshoot the most common privacy and comparison problems
Friends still saw an achievement
- Verify that the specific title is marked Private, rather than merely hidden from your Library.
- Check whether the achievement was earned before the game was made private; private status controls the game’s visible activity going forward, while previously viewed information may already have been seen.
- If the event occurred during multiplayer, remember that other players on the same matchmaking server can still see your Steam ID and session presence.
A comparison site cannot find your games
- Open Profile > Edit Profile > Privacy Settings.
- Check Game details, not only the overall profile setting.
- Set Game details to Public if the service is an unaffiliated third-party API tool.
- If the service needs to choose friends, review Friends list independently.
- Allow the service to retry after Steam’s automatically saved privacy change has taken effect.
Friends can see the library but a comparison tool cannot
This usually indicates a Friends Only Game details setting. Steam friends may be authorized to view information that an unaffiliated API tool cannot access. Public Game details is the relevant change for the external service; changing the entire profile to Public is not a substitute.
The title disappeared from your own Library
That symptom points to Hide this game, the organizational option, rather than a privacy state. Search the Library’s hidden-game view or use the Library controls to restore the title to your personal list. The two options have different purposes: one changes your Library display, while the other limits what other users see.

Choose settings by the result you want
| Your goal | Per-game setting | Profile and comparison settings | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hide achievements and activity for one title | Mark that game Private | Leave other settings unchanged unless you also want to restrict the whole account | Live multiplayer servers can still expose your Steam ID. |
| Hide your entire library from external comparison services | Optional | Do not leave Game details Public | A Public profile can still have hidden Game details. |
| Let an external comparison service read your library | Keep individual exceptions private if desired | Set Game details: Public | Friends Only generally does not authenticate an unrelated API tool as a friend. |
| Let Steam friends browse, but not everyone | Use per-game Private for exceptions | Use Friends Only where appropriate, and check Game details separately | External services may still be unable to read Friends Only data. |
| Remove a title only from your own Library view | Use Hide this game | No profile change required | This does not provide the activity suppression of Private status. |
Privacy checklist before you start a comparison
- Decide whether the restriction applies to one game or the complete account.
- For one-game concealment, use Manage > Mark as Private or Properties > Privacy.
- Do not confuse Hide this game with profile privacy.
- For an external library comparison, verify Game details: Public.
- If the tool has a friend picker, review Friends list as a separate setting.
- Remember that private games do not award Steam Trading Cards while private.
- Expect totals in Achievement Sets to vary when friends have different DLC availability or when achievements are time-limited or archived.
- Account for multiplayer exceptions if your concern is live session visibility rather than profile activity.
