The correct way to get Copilot out of Teams depends on what you are looking at: a Copilot app icon on the left rail, a one-to-one Copilot conversation in the chat list, or Copilot listed as a participant in a group chat. Use Hide for a reversible one-to-one chat, Remove chat history when you want that conversation removed from your own list and search, Add people, agents, and bots > X to remove Copilot from a group conversation, or Unpin to remove an app shortcut.
None of these user controls disables Copilot for your organization. Unpinning an app does not erase chats, hiding a chat does not delete its history, and removing Copilot from a group chat does not prevent a licensed user from opening a separate Copilot conversation.

Identify which Copilot item you want to remove
Teams uses similar-looking entries for different things. Check the location and wording before choosing an action. A shortcut on the left navigation rail is an app-placement issue. A row under Chat is a conversation-management issue. Copilot’s name beside other people in a group is a participant-management issue.
That distinction matters because each command has a different scope. None of them is a universal “turn Copilot off” switch, and none should be treated as a substitute for an administrator’s organization-wide policy.

Microsoft’s instructions for hiding, removing history and restoring hidden chats are available in its chat management guide and its hide and unhide instructions.
Before you change anything
- Look at the item’s location. Is it on the left rail, in the Chat list, or in the participant header of a group?
- Decide whether you need the messages later. Hide preserves a route back to the conversation; removing chat history removes your search access to that one-to-one chat.
- Check the client. Desktop and web commonly expose the controls described below. Mobile menus and rollout timing can differ.
- Consider policy. Your account can hide a conversation or unpin an app only when those commands are available. A Teams administrator can control app placement and organizational Copilot availability.
Do not use Remove chat history as a way to remove a group participant, and do not use Unpin expecting a chat row to disappear. The command should match the object you are changing.
Hide a one-to-one Copilot conversation
Choose this option when your goal is simply to keep Copilot out of the visible chat list while retaining the conversation. Hiding is reversible and does not destroy the chat.

- Open Chat in Teams.
- Find the one-to-one Copilot conversation in the list.
- Select More options (the three-dot menu) next to that chat.
- Select Hide.
What hiding does
The conversation disappears from the normal list, but its messages remain available to you through Teams search. Microsoft describes the hidden state as temporary: if someone posts a new message in the conversation, it can appear in the chat list again. For a one-to-one Copilot chat, that new activity may be generated when you use the conversation again.
Hiding is therefore a visibility choice, not a privacy or retention command. It does not revoke your Copilot license, remove prompts from any organizational systems governed by policy, or prevent you from starting another Copilot interaction.
How to find or unhide it
Use the search box at the top of Teams and enter the Copilot chat’s name or a distinctive word from its messages. Open the result to view the conversation. Depending on your Teams build, the chat’s More options menu may offer Unhide or an equivalent action to return it to the visible list. Searching is the recovery route; hiding is not a deletion command.
If search returns several Copilot-related results, open the result that is clearly the one-to-one conversation rather than an app result or a group chat. Once the chat is open, use its own menu so you do not accidentally change the wrong item.

Remove the one-to-one chat history from your account
Select this stronger action only when you no longer want that one-to-one Copilot conversation in your own chat list or search results. It has a different outcome from hiding.
- Open the Copilot conversation in Chat.
- Open its More options menu.
- Choose Remove chat history and confirm if Teams asks you to do so.
Microsoft states that removing chat history removes the one-to-one chat from that user’s list and search. You cannot use search to access it again. The action is scoped to your account; it is not a request to erase Copilot for everyone who may have access to the service, and it does not remove a separate Copilot app shortcut.
When to use Hide instead
- Use Hide if you may need the messages later.
- Use Remove chat history only when losing your search access to that conversation is acceptable.
- Use Unpin instead if the item is an icon on the navigation rail rather than a conversation.
The available command can vary with Teams version, account type and organizational policy. If Remove chat history is absent, do not assume that Hide has the same effect; it leaves the conversation retrievable.
Removing history is also a per-user action. It does not promise that another person’s view, a separate group conversation, or an administrator-managed record has changed. It simply describes what you can access from your account in Teams.
Remove Copilot from a Teams group chat
A group chat can show Copilot as a participant alongside people. Removing that participant is not the same as hiding a one-to-one chat and does not delete the group’s message history.
- Open the group conversation.
- At the top of the chat window, select Add people, agents, and bots.
- Locate Copilot in the participant list.
- Select the X next to Copilot’s name.
Microsoft Support gives the instruction this way: “To remove Copilot from the chat, go to the top of the chat window and select Add people, agents, and bots. Then, select the X next to Copilot’s name.” See Microsoft’s guide to Copilot in Teams group chats for the participant controls.
After removal
The group no longer includes Copilot as a participant, but the existing group conversation remains. A user who has a Copilot license can still start or continue a separate one-to-one Copilot chat. Removing the participant therefore changes that conversation only; it is not an organization-wide Copilot switch.

If Copilot was added for a particular task, removing it does not turn earlier human messages into a new chat or rewrite the group’s history. Participants can continue using the group normally, subject to the chat’s membership rules. To verify the result, reopen Add people, agents, and bots and check that Copilot is no longer listed.
Unpin the Copilot app from Teams navigation
If Copilot is visible as an app shortcut on the left side of the Teams window, remove the pin rather than changing chat history.
- Move to the Copilot app icon on the left navigation rail.
- Right-click the icon (or open its context menu).
- Select Unpin.
Microsoft documents this general app command in its Teams app pinning instructions. After unpinning, the app may be available under the rail’s app overflow menu. You can open it from there when needed and pin it again if your account allows pinning.
Why unpinning does not remove a chat
An app pin is only a navigation shortcut. It does not remove a Copilot conversation, erase prompts or history, or revoke a license. If the chat list still contains a Copilot conversation after you unpin the app, manage that conversation separately with Hide or Remove chat history.
Conversely, hiding a conversation will not necessarily remove the Copilot icon. You may need to perform both actions if you want a cleaner rail and a cleaner chat list.
When an administrator controls the pin
Organizations can manage app placement with Teams app setup policies. Microsoft’s documentation on pinning Copilot Chat in the navigation bar describes the administrator and user sides of that setup. If the icon returns, cannot be unpinned, or is placed differently for multiple users, an administrator may be enforcing the layout. A local unpin cannot override a policy that reapplies the pin.
The cancelled plan to remove the Teams chat-list entry
An archived Microsoft 365 Message Center item, MC1477999, was updated on October 8, 2026. The update says Microsoft decided not to proceed with the proposed removal of the Copilot entry point from the Teams chat list and instructs readers to disregard the original notice.

The cancelled proposal referred to Teams desktop and web, not mobile, and said that no conversations, prompts, history or Copilot data would be removed. Those details describe the abandoned proposal, not a current rollout. Do not wait for that change to hide the entry: use the controls above in your tenant. The archived notice is available at MC1477999; Message Center plans can change again, so treat the October 2026 status as a dated record rather than a guarantee for every future Teams build.

The three-dot menu has no Hide command
First confirm that you opened the menu for a chat row, not the Copilot app icon. App icons use Unpin; conversation rows use chat actions. If the row is a group chat or a channel conversation, its available commands may differ from those for a one-to-one chat. Updating Teams or checking the account in the web client can reveal interface differences, but organizational policy can also limit available actions.

That is expected when new activity is posted. Search for the conversation and hide it again if you only want it out of sight. If you need it to stay unavailable through search, hiding is the wrong control; use Remove chat history when that command is offered and you accept the loss of access.
Copilot is still available after removing it from a group
Participant removal affects only that group chat. A licensed user can continue to open a one-to-one Copilot conversation, so continued access does not indicate that the removal failed. Check the group’s participant list to verify that Copilot’s name is no longer present.
The Copilot icon disappeared but I can still open Copilot
Unpinning removes the rail shortcut, not the app or service. Look in the app overflow area or use Teams search to locate the app. If an administrator manages the navigation policy, the icon may be restored later.
The Copilot participant cannot be removed
Make sure you are editing the group chat’s participant list and have the permissions required to change it. The control is the X beside Copilot under Add people, agents, and bots, not the menu for hiding a chat. If the X is unavailable, the chat’s membership rules or your organization’s Teams configuration may restrict participant changes; contact your Teams administrator.

Microsoft’s cancelled MC1477999 proposal covered desktop and web and explicitly did not describe mobile. Teams mobile can expose different menus and rollout timing. Do not interpret the absence of a desktop option on a phone as evidence that Copilot data was deleted; use the mobile menu labels available in your current app or complete the task in Teams desktop or web.
You removed the wrong thing
If you unpinned the app when you meant to hide a chat, open the app overflow and then manage the conversation from Chat. If you hid a chat when you intended to remove its history, search for it while it is still available and look for Remove chat history. If you removed Copilot from a group, add it again only if the group’s participants decide that is appropriate; the action did not affect your separate one-to-one access.
A quick decision checklist
- Only an icon on the left rail? Right-click it and choose Unpin.
- A one-to-one chat you may want later? Choose More options > Hide.
- A one-to-one chat you must not retrieve through search? Choose Remove chat history, if available.
- Copilot listed inside a group conversation? Use Add people, agents, and bots > X.
- Trying to disable Copilot for everybody? None of these personal chat controls does that; an administrator must manage organization-level availability and app policies.

A Teams app setup policy may be enforcing the pin. An administrator-controlled layout can reapply the icon or prevent local changes.
Did Microsoft remove the Copilot entry from the Teams chat list in October 2026?
No. Archived Message Center item MC1477999 was updated October 8, 2026 to say Microsoft would not proceed with that proposed removal. Use the current hide, history, participant and app-pinning controls instead.
