How to Hide or Remove a Face Group in Google Photos

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google Photos has three different controls that are often confused: Hide faces changes who appears in featured Memories, Remove results takes selected photos or videos out of a face group without deleting them, and switching off Face Groups deletes the account’s face groups, face models and created labels.

Choose the narrowest option that matches your goal. If you only want someone out of Memories, use Show less or Blocked. If Google put a photo in the wrong person’s group, remove that result or correct its person labels. Turn off Face Groups only when you want to delete the entire face-group data set.

Choose the action that matches your goal

What you want Use What changes What does not change
Reduce or stop a person appearing in featured Memories Hide faces → Show less or Blocked Memories treatment for that face Your photos and videos stay in the library
Correct a mistaken photo or video in one face group People & pets → More → Remove results That item’s membership in the selected group The original item remains in Google Photos
Correct labels on a particular photo Open the photo → Info panel → edit person labels The people labels attached to that item The photo or video itself
Delete every face group and its models and labels Turn off Face Groups The account’s Face Groups data Your underlying library photos and videos

These controls operate at different scopes. Hiding is a Memories preference, removing results changes selected group membership, and turning off Face Groups is an account-wide data deletion action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask three questions before changing anything: Is the unwanted item a featured Memory, is one file in the wrong group, or do you want Google Photos to stop maintaining all face-group data? Also decide whether the original photos must remain available. That quick check prevents the common mistake of deleting a broad data set to solve a single Memory.

Hide a person from featured Memories

Google’s Hide faces setting applies to the featured Memories carousel. It is not a command to erase the person’s photos, remove them from every search, or delete a face group. Use it when the unwanted result is a Memory rather than the library item itself.

On a computer

  1. Open Google Photos.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Scroll to the Memories section.
  4. Select Hide faces.
  5. Choose the faces you want to manage under Show less or Blocked.
  6. Confirm the selection.

The setting is tied to the Google Photos account you are using in that browser. If you manage more than one account, check the profile before changing the preference.

On Android

  1. Open the Google Photos app.
  2. Open Photos settings.
  3. Tap Preferences, then Memories.
  4. Tap Hide faces.
  5. Select the faces and tap Done.

Show less versus Blocked

  • Show less suppresses Memories about that person. Google warns that the person may still appear in a Memory when they are part of a group photo included with other people.
  • Blocked excludes that face from Memories, including group photos with other people. Google says a blocked face is removed from People & pets; unhiding restores it there.

That distinction matters for families and events. Show less is a softer preference when occasional appearances in a group are acceptable. Blocked is the stronger choice when even a group photograph should not produce a Memory containing that face.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Face hiding is not guaranteed to work perfectly in every image. Similar-looking faces, unusual angles, occlusion, or a group photograph can still produce an unexpected Memory. The control changes how featured Memories are generated; it is not a promise that every image containing that person will disappear from every Google Photos surface.

Undo a hide choice

  1. Return to Hide faces using the same desktop or Android path.
  2. Find the person under Show less or Blocked.
  3. Use Remove beside the face.

Undoing the setting changes the Memories preference. It does not recover any data that you separately deleted by turning off Face Groups. If the face was blocked, Google says unhiding makes it available in People & pets again.

Remove selected photos or videos from a face group

Use this workflow when Google Photos grouped an item under the wrong person, or when one particular image should no longer belong to that face group. Removing a result is not the same as deleting the file. Google’s documented behavior is explicit: “If you remove an item from a group, it won’t delete the photo or video from your Google Photos library.”

Desktop procedure

  1. Go to photos.google.com/people.
  2. Open the face group that contains the incorrect result.
  3. Open More.
  4. Select Remove results.
  5. Select the photos or videos to take out of that group.
  6. Click Remove.

Review the thumbnails before confirming, especially when several similar photos were selected. The operation applies to the items you select, not to every image in the group. The selected items remain available in the main Google Photos library, albums and other places where those files are stored; removing them only changes their association with that face group.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix a mislabeled photo from its Info panel

Google also documents changing a photo’s person labels from the photo’s Info panel. This is useful when the image has the wrong name attached, rather than simply being an unwanted result in a group. Open the individual photo, open its information panel, and edit the person labels shown there. This correction is separate from Hide faces and separate from disabling Face Groups.

Use the Info-panel route when the problem is metadata on one item. Use Remove results when the item should no longer be a member of the selected face group. Neither workflow removes the original file, and neither one deletes the face models for the whole account.

What this procedure cannot do

  • It does not delete the selected photos or videos from your library.
  • It does not hide the person from Memories; use Hide faces for that.
  • It does not delete every item associated with the person.
  • It does not delete all face groups or the underlying face models.
  • It does not provide a documented one-click cleanup of all photos linked to a person.

Delete all Face Groups data

Turning off Face Groups is the broadest available documented control. Google says that this action deletes the account’s face groups, the face models used to create them, and the face labels you created. It is therefore appropriate when you no longer want Google Photos to maintain face-group data at all, not merely when one person is appearing in Memories.

On a computer

  1. Open photos.google.com/settings.
  2. Expand Group similar faces.
  3. Turn Face Groups off.
  4. Confirm the change if Google Photos asks you to do so.

On Android

Google’s help documentation lists more than one Android route, and the labels can vary by app version:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Google Photos and go to Photos settings.
  2. Look under Privacy for the Face Groups control; Google also documents Preferences → Group similar faces as a route.
  3. Turn Face Groups off and confirm.

If neither route appears, the setting may not be available for your account, location, domain, or app build. The desktop and Android instructions are not promised to have identical menus.

Understand the deletion before confirming

  • Face groups are deleted.
  • The numerical face models created for grouping are deleted.
  • Face labels you created are deleted.
  • Your original photos and videos are not described as being deleted by this setting.

This is an account-wide change, not a command aimed at one person. If your only concern is a single face in Memories, Hide faces is narrower and reversible. If your concern is the existence of face-group processing itself, switching off Face Groups addresses that broader concern.

Google’s documentation does not describe turning Face Groups back on as restoring the previously deleted groups, models, or labels. Treat re-enabling it as starting the grouping process again rather than as an undo button. Any labels or group organization you had created should therefore be regarded as gone when you confirm the switch-off.

How Face Groups and face models work

When Face Groups is enabled, Google says it detects faces in photos, creates numerical models to estimate similarity, and groups faces that are likely to match. Google’s own explanation states: “When ‘Face Groups’ is on, you let us know that you want models of the faces that appear in your photos to be made.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These models are not the same thing as the original image files. Removing a result changes a group association while leaving the file in the library. Deleting an individual photo or video is a separate action; Google says that deleting the item deletes face models derived specifically from that item. That statement does not mean that deleting one photo removes all models or all groups for the account.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Google also says these models may be considered biometric data in some jurisdictions. That is a disclosure about how the models could be classified; it does not determine the legal classification for every person or country. If this distinction matters for your privacy decision, review the rules that apply where you live rather than assuming that every jurisdiction treats the data identically.

Retention statements from Google

  • Turning off Face Groups deletes groups, models, and labels.
  • Deleting an individual photo or video deletes face models derived specifically from that item.
  • Google says that more than two years of inactivity in Google Photos results in deletion of Face Groups content.

The two-year period is a stated product-retention rule, not a statistic about how often people use the feature. It concerns Face Groups content, not a promise that your entire Google Photos library will be removed after two years. Google does not provide a granular processing timeline in the cited help material for when each deletion becomes visible everywhere.

Which option should you use?

Use Show less when

  • You only want fewer Memories about a person.
  • It is acceptable for the person to appear occasionally in a group-photo Memory.
  • You want a reversible preference rather than data deletion.

Use Blocked when

  • You do not want the face to appear in featured Memories at all, including group photos with others.
  • You understand that Google says the blocked face is removed from People & pets while blocked.
  • You want the strongest Memories-only control without deleting Face Groups data.

Remove results when

  • One or more photos or videos are incorrectly assigned to a face group.
  • You want the files to stay in your library but not in that group.
  • You are correcting group membership rather than changing Memories behavior.

Edit person labels when

  • A particular photo has the wrong person label.
  • You need to correct metadata on one item without changing the entire group or Memories settings.

Turn off Face Groups when

  • You want all face groups, face models, and created labels deleted.
  • You no longer want the face-grouping feature enabled for the account.
  • You accept that the action is account-wide and is not documented as restoring old data when re-enabled.

Availability and interface differences

Google warns that Face Groups is unavailable in some geographic regions, domains, or account types. A missing menu does not necessarily mean that you are using the wrong path. Check both the product surface you are using and whether the feature is offered for that account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Desktop instructions use the web settings and the People page, while Android instructions use the Photos settings hierarchy. Labels can move between Privacy and Preferences, and Google does not promise identical menus on every device. The documented material does not establish an equivalent iPhone or iPad path, so do not assume that an Android route will appear unchanged in iOS.

Because menus can vary, search the settings categories named above rather than relying on an exact screen layout. Confirm that you are signed into the intended account and using the current Google Photos app or website. If a feature is unavailable for the account, repeatedly looking in another menu will not create the missing control.

Bulk deletion: what is and is not established

A Google Photos Help Community answer dated July 5, 2026 says there is no bulk action to delete an entire face group or all photos associated with one person at once. Community content is not guaranteed to be verified or current, so treat that statement as qualified context rather than as a permanent product specification.

The official instructions document removing selected group results and disabling Face Groups. They do not establish a complete list of every control that may be present in every account or app version. If your goal is to delete the actual photos, that is a separate library-management task from removing face-group membership, and the documented face-group workflow should not be treated as a bulk photo-deletion command.

Troubleshoot common outcomes

The person still appears after choosing Show less

That result can be expected. Show less suppresses Memories about the person but may still allow the face in a group-photo Memory. Change the setting to Blocked if the requirement is to exclude the person from Memories, including group photos.

The photo disappeared from a face group, but I can still find it in Google Photos

That is the intended effect of Remove results. The operation changes group membership while leaving the original photo or video in the library. Do not repeat the removal expecting the file itself to vanish; use the library’s normal deletion controls only if you actually want to delete the photo.

I cannot find Hide faces

Use the documented path for your platform: Settings → Memories → Hide faces on desktop, or Photos settings → Preferences → Memories → Hide faces on Android. If the control is absent, account, domain, regional availability, or a changed app layout may be responsible.

I cannot find Face Groups

On desktop, open photos.google.com/settings and expand Group similar faces. On Android, check both Privacy and Preferences in Google Photos settings. If neither location contains the option, Google’s availability warning may apply to your account or region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

I turned Face Groups off and the people labels are gone

That is consistent with Google’s documented behavior: switching the feature off deletes the face groups, face models, and created labels. Do not expect the previous collection to reappear automatically if you later enable the feature again.

I deleted a photo but still see other face groups

Deleting one photo affects face models derived specifically from that item. It is not the same as turning Face Groups off, which deletes the account’s complete collection of groups, models and created labels.

A face is classified incorrectly again

Use Remove results for the incorrect item or edit its person labels from the Info panel. Hiding the face changes Memories treatment and does not correct the underlying group membership.

Practical privacy checklist

  • Decide whether the problem is a Memory, one incorrect result, a wrong label, or all Face Groups data.
  • Use Hide faces for Memories; do not disable Face Groups solely to suppress one person.
  • Use Blocked rather than Show less when group-photo appearances are unacceptable.
  • Use Remove results when the source file must remain in the library.
  • Review the Info panel when only a photo’s person label is wrong.
  • Before turning Face Groups off, understand that groups, models, and created labels are deleted account-wide.
  • Remember that re-enabling Face Groups is not documented as restoring deleted data.
  • Check the setting’s availability and exact menu labels on your device before troubleshooting further.
  • If legal classification of face models matters to you, consider the rules in your jurisdiction rather than relying on a general assumption.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does hiding a face delete the person’s photos?

No. Hide faces changes the treatment of that face in the featured Memories carousel. The photos and videos remain in your Google Photos library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between Show less and Blocked?

Show less suppresses Memories about the person, but the face may still appear in a group-photo Memory. Blocked excludes the face from Memories, including group photos with others, and Google says the blocked face is removed from People & pets until you unhide it.

Can I remove one photo from a face group without deleting it?

Yes. On desktop, open photos.google.com/people, open the group, choose More → Remove results, select the items and click Remove. The original files stay in your library.

How do I correct the name attached to one photo?

Open the photo, open its Info panel and edit the person labels. This corrects that item’s labels and is separate from hiding a face or turning off Face Groups.

What happens when I turn off Face Groups?

Google says it deletes all face groups, the numerical face models used to create them and the face labels you created. Your original photos and videos are not described as being deleted by this setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will turning Face Groups on again restore my old groups?

Google does not document re-enabling as a restoration or undo operation. Treat it as starting face grouping again, without assuming that deleted groups, models or labels will return.

Is there a bulk command to delete every photo associated with one person?

A Google Photos Help Community answer dated July 5, 2026 says there is no such bulk action. That is community guidance and may change; the official instructions document removing selected results or disabling Face Groups, not a complete bulk-photo deletion workflow.

Why is the Face Groups setting missing?

Google warns that Face Groups is unavailable in some geographic regions, domains and account types. Menu names also differ between desktop and Android, so check both documented Android locations—Privacy and Preferences—as well as the desktop Group similar faces setting.

The Bottom Line

Use Show less or Blocked for a Memories-only change, Remove results or Info-panel label editing for a mistaken item, and turn off Face Groups only when you want the account’s face groups, models and created labels deleted. Removing a result does not delete the original photo.
