On a desktop browser, you can hide the surrounding page by using full-screen mode, enlarge the player with Theater mode, change the space available to the player by resizing the browser window, or use Miniplayer for a smaller viewing area. In full screen, scroll down to read comments and suggested videos, then scroll back up to hide everything except the video.
What “hide or move YouTube comments” means on desktop
There are two different goals behind this question. You may want to watch without seeing comments at all, or you may want the comments column somewhere else on the page. YouTube’s documented desktop controls address the first goal only indirectly through viewing modes and page layout. They do not describe a way for a viewer to grab the comments panel and drag it to the left, right, top, or another browser window.

The player itself adapts to the space available in your browser window. YouTube explains that the video-player size automatically changes according to the available browser space in its Change video player size help page. That means changing the browser window can change the relationship between the player and the rest of the page, but it is not the same as repositioning comments.
If your aim is a clean, video-focused view, full screen is the closest built-in option. YouTube’s Watch videos in full-screen mode – Computer instructions specifically describe scrolling down to read comments and see what is next, then scrolling back up to hide everything except the video.

It helps to treat “hide” and “move” as separate requests. Hiding is temporary and personal: it changes what appears in your viewing area. Moving would imply a persistent, user-defined location for the comments panel. The documented controls provide the first kind of change, not the second.
Desktop options at a glance
| Option | What changes | What happens to comments | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full screen | The video occupies the focused full-screen view. | Comments and other page content are hidden when you scroll back up; scrolling down reveals comments and suggested next videos. | Watching with the fewest distractions. |
| Theater mode | The player becomes larger while the YouTube page remains around it. | Comments remain part of the page rather than being moved to a custom location. | A larger player without leaving the page. |
| Browser resize | The available width and height for YouTube change as you resize the browser window. | The page and player reflow to the available space; this does not provide a draggable comments panel. | Balancing video size with other desktop windows. |
| Miniplayer | The video appears in a smaller player while you continue using YouTube. | It is a viewing-size choice, not a comments-hiding or comments-relocation control. | Keeping a video visible while browsing elsewhere on YouTube. |
The choice depends on two questions: how much of the page you want visible and whether you want the video larger or smaller. Full screen minimizes page distractions. Theater mode enlarges the player but keeps YouTube’s page available. Resizing lets you balance YouTube with other windows. Miniplayer gives you the least video area while you navigate elsewhere on YouTube.
Hide comments while watching in full screen
Full screen is the most direct way to temporarily hide comments from your view. It does not change the video’s comment setting, and it does not remove comments for anyone else.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the video on YouTube in a desktop browser.
- Move the pointer over the player so the playback controls appear.
- Select the Full screen control at the bottom-right of the player.
- Stay near the top of the full-screen view when you want a video-only presentation.
- Scroll down when you need to read comments or check which videos are up next.
- Scroll back up to hide the page content and return to the video-focused view.
The important behavior is tied to scrolling. Full screen is not a permanent comment switch: scrolling down deliberately brings page content, including comments, into view. Scrolling up hides that surrounding content again, as described in YouTube’s desktop help.
This makes full screen useful for two opposite tasks in one session. You can begin with a clean presentation, then scroll down to participate in the discussion or inspect suggested videos without leaving full screen. When you are finished, scrolling back up restores the focused view. You do not need to change a comment preference each time.
Use the browser’s normal full-screen exit control when you want to return to the standard YouTube page. Once you leave full screen, the regular page layout returns, including the comments area when that video has comments available.
Full screen is therefore a view-level action, not moderation. It cannot hide comments from another viewer, erase comments, or make a disabled comment section available. It only controls how much of the page is in your current view.

Theater mode enlarges the player while keeping the YouTube page around it. This is useful when full screen hides too much context, such as the title, channel information, or controls below the player.
- Open the video on YouTube.
- Reveal the player controls by moving the pointer over the video.
- Select Theater mode in the player controls.
- Watch in the wider player while leaving the page itself available around it.
Theater mode changes the player’s presentation; it is not a command to move comments to another side of the screen. Comments remain governed by the page layout and by whether the video owner allows comments. If you still see the comments section below or beside the player, that is expected in this mode.

Choose Theater mode when you want a larger picture but still need to use the page. Choose full screen when your priority is hiding surrounding content while watching.
Theater mode can be a practical middle ground for tutorials, lectures, or music videos where you want a larger image but still need the title, channel information, navigation, or other page controls. Its defining limitation is also its purpose: because the page remains present, it cannot provide a video-only display or a custom comments location.
Change the layout by resizing the browser window
YouTube says its desktop player automatically adapts to the available space in the browser window. Resizing the window therefore changes the space YouTube has for the player and the rest of the page.
- Open the video in its own desktop browser window or tab.
- Drag a window edge or corner to make the browser narrower, wider, shorter, or taller.
- Pause after each size change and let the YouTube page reflow.
- Keep the window size that gives you the preferred balance between the player and the page.
A wider window may allow a larger player and more room for surrounding page elements; a narrower window may stack or rearrange those elements. The exact arrangement depends on the current YouTube interface and the space your browser provides. Window resizing changes responsive layout; it does not create an arbitrary comments position or a separate comments window.
This option is particularly practical when you watch while keeping another desktop application visible. You can reduce the YouTube window until the video occupies the amount of space you need, then enlarge it again when you want the normal page layout.
Resize is also useful when you want to compare the video with notes or another application. The result is responsive rather than fixed: changing the window dimensions changes the available space, and YouTube decides how the player and page elements reflow within it. If a particular arrangement disappears after another resize, that is normal behavior for an adaptive layout, not evidence that comments have been moved permanently.
Use Miniplayer when you want a smaller viewing area
Miniplayer is the opposite of Theater mode: it presents the video in a smaller player so you can continue navigating YouTube. It is useful when the video should remain visible while you browse, but it is not a method for hiding, moving, or filtering the comments panel.
- Open the video and reveal the player controls.
- Select Miniplayer when that control is available.
- Continue browsing YouTube with the video in the reduced player.
- Return to the regular video page when you need the full player and its page content.
If comments are the distraction you are trying to avoid, Miniplayer may not meet that goal because it changes the video size rather than offering a comments-layout setting. Use full screen for the cleanest viewing area.
Miniplayer is best understood as a navigation choice. It keeps playback present while you visit other YouTube pages, but it does not turn the comments section into a floating panel and does not alter whether comments are enabled on the video.

Can you move the comments panel to a custom location?
For ordinary desktop viewing, no documented YouTube control lets you freely reposition comments. The official desktop help covers player size, Theater mode, Miniplayer, and full-screen behavior, but it does not describe dragging comments to another side of the page or pinning them beside the player.
That distinction matters because a layout change can look like a move. When the browser becomes wider or narrower, YouTube may reflow the player and page elements. Theater mode also changes the player’s size. Neither behavior gives you a user-defined coordinates or a permanent comments position.
If you need comments temporarily, use the normal page view or scroll down in full screen. If you do not want to see them while watching, use full screen and scroll back up. These are temporary viewer-side presentation choices, not changes to the video’s comment availability.
Be cautious with instructions that promise a built-in “drag comments” button. The documented controls do not make that promise, and YouTube can update its interface. A browser extension or custom script, if one is used, would be separate from YouTube’s documented desktop controls and could behave differently after an interface update.
What each option does—and does not do
Knowing the limits prevents the most common mix-ups:
Recommended Free Tools
- Full screen hides surrounding page content when you scroll back up, but scrolling down intentionally reveals comments and suggested videos again.
- Theater mode increases the player’s in-page size, but it does not remove the page or relocate comments.
- Browser resizing changes the space available to YouTube, but it does not let you choose coordinates for the comments panel.
- Miniplayer reduces the video area while you browse YouTube, but it is not a comments filter.
None of these options changes who can comment, deletes existing comments, changes their order, or applies a setting to other viewers. Those are separate video or channel controls.
Troubleshooting when comments keep appearing
Comments appear after you scroll
This is normal in full screen. YouTube intentionally allows scrolling down to read comments and view suggested next videos. Scroll back up to hide the page content again.
Theater mode still shows the page
Theater mode enlarges the player without entering full screen. Because the page remains present, comments can remain visible in the page layout. Switch to full screen if you want the surrounding page hidden.
Resizing the window did not put comments where you expected
Window resizing changes the amount of space available to YouTube, and the player adapts to that space. It is not a manual panel-positioning feature. Try a substantially different window width, or use Theater mode or full screen for a more predictable viewing change.

You are looking for a smaller floating video
Select Miniplayer instead of Theater mode. Miniplayer reduces the player’s size; it does not relocate comments or change whether comments are enabled.
The comments section is missing entirely
That may be a video or channel setting rather than a problem with your display. YouTube’s computer comment guidance notes that commenting depends on the video owner enabling comments and that comments can be restricted by the channel or video. A viewer cannot use Theater mode, full screen, or browser resizing to turn comments back on.
In other words, a missing section and a hidden section are different conditions. Full screen can hide page content from your view, but it cannot restore comments that the owner has disabled or that a channel or video restriction has limited. If comments are unavailable in the regular page view as well, changing player size will not resolve that setting.
The controls look different
YouTube can update its interface and rearrange controls. Look for the same functions rather than relying on a fixed icon position: a Theater mode control for a larger in-page player, a Full screen control at the player’s bottom-right, and a Miniplayer option for a smaller player. The documented behavior is more stable than the exact visual placement of each control.

Viewer layout controls versus creator comment settings
Changing what you see while watching is different from changing how a video handles comments. Full screen, Theater mode, browser resizing, and Miniplayer affect your viewing layout only. They do not disable comments, delete existing comments, or change the experience for other viewers.
If you own the video, YouTube Studio provides comment settings for the video. Creator controls can determine whether comments are allowed and can change how comments are ordered. Those settings apply to the video’s audience; they are not a personal desktop-display preference. Use Studio when the goal is to manage comments on your own upload, and use the player controls when the goal is simply to watch without the comments area in view.
For a viewer asking why comments cannot be posted or why the section is unavailable, the owner’s settings or a channel/video restriction may be the explanation. For a viewer asking how to hide comments temporarily, full-screen scrolling is the relevant control.
Comment ordering is another creator-side distinction. A creator can choose how comments are ordered in YouTube Studio, but that does not create a viewer-side option to move the panel or personalize its location. Viewers can choose among the page and player layouts described above, while the video owner controls availability and ordering for the upload.

“I want only the video on screen.”
- Enter full screen from the player’s bottom-right control.
- Keep the view scrolled up so the surrounding page is hidden.
- Scroll down only when you intentionally want comments or suggested videos.
“I want a larger player but still need the page.”
- Choose Theater mode.
- Keep the page available for title, channel, and navigation information.
- Accept that comments remain part of the page layout rather than moving to a custom location.
“I need YouTube beside another desktop window.”
- Resize the browser window to the width that fits your workspace.
- Let the player adapt to the newly available space.
- Use full screen only when you can give the video the entire display.
“I want to keep watching while browsing YouTube.”
- Choose Miniplayer.
- Continue navigating with the reduced video player.
- Do not expect Miniplayer to suppress or reposition comments.
“I want comments available only occasionally.”
- Start in full screen with the page scrolled up.
- Scroll down when you deliberately want to read comments or see what is up next.
- Scroll back up when you want the video-only view again.
Quick decision guide
Use full screen when minimizing distractions is the priority. Use Theater mode when the video should be larger but the title, channel details, and page navigation still matter. Use browser resizing when YouTube must share the desktop with another application. Use Miniplayer when you want playback to continue while you browse YouTube. If the requirement is a comments panel at a precise, user-chosen location, none of these documented controls meets it.
Best Value
Bottom line for hiding or moving YouTube comments
You can hide surrounding YouTube page content while watching on desktop by entering full screen and scrolling back up. You can enlarge the player with Theater mode or alter its responsive layout by resizing the browser. Miniplayer offers a smaller viewing area. You cannot rely on a documented YouTube viewer control to drag the comments panel to an arbitrary position, and none of these viewing modes changes the creator’s comment settings.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I hide YouTube comments while watching on desktop?
Open the video, select the Full screen control at the bottom-right of the player, and keep the view scrolled up. Scroll down when you want comments or suggested videos, then scroll back up to hide the surrounding page again.
Can I move YouTube comments to the side of the video?
YouTube’s documented desktop controls do not provide a viewer option to drag or pin the comments panel to a custom location. Browser resizing and Theater mode can change the responsive layout, but they do not let you choose the panel’s coordinates.
Does Theater mode hide comments?
No. Theater mode makes the player larger while keeping the YouTube page around it, so comments can remain part of the page layout. Use full screen when you want surrounding page content hidden.
What does resizing the browser window change?
YouTube says the player automatically adapts to the available browser-window space. Resizing can change the player and page arrangement, but it is not a manual comments-positioning control.
Is Miniplayer a comments-hiding feature?
No. Miniplayer shows the video in a smaller player while you continue navigating YouTube. It changes viewing size, not comment visibility or location.
Why are comments missing from a video?
The video owner may have disabled comments, or comments may be restricted by the channel or video. Viewer layout controls cannot turn those comments back on.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can full screen disable comments for everyone?
No. Full screen changes only your personal view. It does not disable, delete, reorder, or otherwise change comments for the video’s other viewers.
How can a creator change comment availability or ordering?
A creator can use YouTube Studio’s comment settings to control whether comments are allowed and how they are ordered. Those settings apply to the video audience and are separate from a viewer’s desktop layout.
The Bottom Line
For a clean desktop view, use full screen and scroll back up. Theater mode enlarges the player without hiding the page, browser resizing changes responsive space, and Miniplayer makes the player smaller. YouTube does not document a viewer control for dragging comments to a custom location.
