To hide crash, construction, closure and other incident symbols on Google Maps, turn off the Traffic map detail. On a phone or tablet, tap Layers, then Traffic. On a computer, open Layers > More and switch off Traffic. This removes the entire traffic display, not just incident icons. If you want to stop spoken or on-screen incident warnings during Android navigation, use the separate alert setting under Settings > Navigation > Alert options.

What “incident reports” mean in Google Maps

Google Maps displays reported road events as part of its Traffic map detail. Depending on the roads and data available in your area, the display can include crash symbols, construction markers, road-closure symbols and other incident indicators. These symbols appear alongside traffic conditions, so they can make a route-planning view look busy even when you only want to see roads, places or directions.

Google’s documented control is the Traffic layer. The available Help instructions do not describe a separate switch for incident symbols alone. Turning Traffic off therefore hides the traffic information and the incident symbols together.

Hide incident symbols on an Android phone or tablet

  1. Open the Google Maps app.
  2. Tap Layers in the upper-right corner of the map.
  3. Under Map details, tap Traffic.
  4. If Traffic was selected, tapping it again clears the selection and hides that detail.

Return to the map after clearing the selection. The colored traffic display and the incident markers associated with it should no longer be shown. Your base map, place labels and other enabled details remain controlled by their own layer settings.

If Traffic is already off but symbols remain

  • Open Layers again and verify that Traffic is not highlighted as an active detail.
  • Check that you are changing the map view in the Google Maps app, rather than looking at a navigation alert or notification. The alert control is separate from map-layer visibility.
  • Close and reopen the Layers panel if the map has not visually refreshed. Interface placement can change as Maps is updated, but Traffic remains the documented map-detail control.

Hide incident symbols on an iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Google Maps.
  2. Tap Layers in the upper-right corner.
  3. Under Map details, tap Traffic to clear it.

Google’s mobile instructions use the same tap-to-toggle behavior on iPhone and iPad: tapping a selected map detail again hides it. This setting removes the traffic detail as a whole, including the incident symbols shown within that detail.

What iPhone and iPad users should not expect

The documented mobile instructions do not provide an incident-only filter. They also do not describe an iPhone or iPad navigation switch that removes map symbols while preserving traffic shading. If the goal is a cleaner map, use the Traffic layer toggle; if the goal is fewer spoken or navigation warnings, check which alert controls Google Maps provides on your device and version.

Hide incident symbols on Google Maps for desktop

  1. Open Google Maps in your browser.
  2. Click Layers at the bottom left of the map.
  3. Point to Layers in the panel.
  4. Click More.
  5. Turn off Traffic.

The desktop interface places Traffic under the additional map layers rather than directly beside the map. Once it is disabled, the traffic display and the incident markers belonging to it are hidden from the map view.

If the desktop panel looks different

Google can adjust labels and panel placement as Maps changes. Look for the Layers control at the lower-left of the map, then the additional or “More” layer choices. The key setting is still named Traffic. The Help instructions do not specify a release number for this interface, so exact placement may differ between updates.

Stop incident alerts during Android navigation

Map clutter and navigation alerts are different problems. Turning off Traffic changes what is drawn on the map. It is not documented as a control for spoken or other navigation warnings. Android has a separate option for alerts about reported incidents and other conditions that may affect a drive.

  1. Open Google Maps on your Android phone or tablet.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap Navigation.
  5. Find Alert options.
  6. Turn off Get alerts for reported incidents and other conditions that may impact your drive.

This setting addresses the alert behavior described by its label. It should not be treated as a documented way to remove incident icons from the ordinary map view. For visible symbols, use the Traffic layer control; for navigation alert noise, use Alert options.

Traffic layer versus navigation alerts

Control Where to find it What it changes What remains true
Traffic map detail Mobile: Layers > Traffic
Desktop: Layers > More > Traffic
Hides the traffic display and the crash, construction, closure and other incident symbols shown in that display. Google does not document an incident-only icon filter that keeps the rest of Traffic visible.
Get alerts for reported incidents and other conditions that may impact your drive Android: profile picture or initial > Settings > Navigation > Alert options Controls the documented incident-related navigation alerts. Google documents this as an alert setting, not as a map-icon visibility setting.

The trade-off: a cleaner map means less traffic information

Traffic is a combined map detail. When you switch it off to remove incident clutter, you also stop seeing the traffic information carried by that layer. That can include the visual traffic conditions that help distinguish free-flowing roads from slower ones.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no documented setting in the supplied Google Help instructions that preserves traffic conditions while hiding only crash or construction symbols. If you need traffic conditions for a particular planning decision, you must re-enable Traffic, inspect the map, and then disable it again when you want the uncluttered view.

Why the incident-only option is easy to miss

Incident markers are not presented as an independent map detail in the documented controls. They are described as part of the Traffic display, which is why searching through the layer list for a separate “incidents” switch will not reveal one. The practical choice is between keeping the complete Traffic detail or hiding it.

Choose the right setting for your situation

You only want a cleaner planning map

Use the Traffic toggle. This is the correct control when the problem is visible icons or colored traffic information covering roads and labels. It works on Android, iPhone, iPad and desktop, with the desktop path nested under Layers > More.

You want to keep the map unchanged but avoid warnings while driving

On Android, use Settings > Navigation > Alert options and disable Get alerts for reported incidents and other conditions that may impact your drive. This changes the alert control rather than the map layer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You want both a clean map and quiet navigation

Apply both settings separately: turn off Traffic in Layers to remove the visible traffic detail, then disable the Android navigation alert option to stop the documented incident-related alerts. Neither setting is described as a substitute for the other.

Troubleshooting common results

Incident icons disappear, but the traffic colors disappear too

That is the expected result of disabling Traffic. Google groups the incident symbols within the Traffic display, so the documented clutter-reduction method removes the complete detail rather than preserving its traffic shading.

Alerts continue after Traffic is turned off

Traffic controls map details. Android navigation alerts use the separate Alert options setting. Open the profile menu and check the full path again: Settings > Navigation > Alert options. Confirm that Get alerts for reported incidents and other conditions that may impact your drive is off.

The Traffic option is missing

Google notes that traffic information is not available everywhere. Availability can therefore depend on the map area. Also check that you opened the Layers panel from the active map and, on desktop, expanded More to reveal additional layers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The labels or positions do not match these steps

Maps interfaces change over time. The names in the documented paths—Layers, Traffic, More, Navigation and Alert options—are the useful landmarks. A newer layout may move a control without changing what it does.

You cannot find Alert options on an iPhone or desktop

The documented alert path supplied for this task is specifically for Android. Do not assume that the Android label or location exists on every platform. On iPhone, iPad or desktop, use the Traffic layer control for map clutter and consult the settings available in that version of Maps for any separate navigation-alert controls.

Restore traffic information when you need it

  1. On Android, iPhone or iPad, tap Layers and tap Traffic so it becomes selected again.
  2. On desktop, click Layers, point to Layers, choose More, and turn on Traffic.

Re-enabling the detail restores the traffic display and the incident symbols included in it. If Android alerts were also disabled, return to Settings > Navigation > Alert options and turn the incident-alert option back on separately.

Limits of Google Maps’ documented controls

  • The documented map control is a whole-layer switch, not an incident-category filter.
  • Turning off Traffic removes traffic information along with the incident symbols.
  • The Android alert option changes navigation alerts and is not documented as a way to hide map icons.
  • Traffic data is not available in every location.
  • Google does not provide release-version numbers for these settings, so wording and placement can change as the app and website are updated.

For most users, the decision is straightforward: disable Traffic when the map itself is too busy, disable the Android navigation alert option when warnings are the problem, and use both controls only when you want both effects.
