How to Hide Distracting Apps and Recommendations in Android Auto

To remove a compatible app from the Android Auto launcher, open Android Auto on your phone, find Settings > Customize launcher, and deselect the app. That route comes from a Google Help Community Product Expert answer dated May 28, 2020, so the label or its availability may differ on your phone today.

The row of recent apps is a different Android Auto surface. Google’s current screen guide says it contains recently used navigation, media, and communication apps, plus one additional app. The guide does not document a control that turns off this row or hides individual recommendation entries.

What you can hide—and what you probably cannot

Android Auto presents apps in more than one place. The main launcher is the screen where compatible apps can be selected for display. A separate recent-app area is generated from recent use and includes an extra app chosen by Android Auto. Treating both surfaces as one list leads to most failed “hide app” attempts.

Android Auto surface What Google’s documentation establishes What to do
Main app launcher A 2020 Google Help Community answer describes deselecting apps under Customize launcher. Check your phone’s Android Auto settings for that control and remove selected apps.
Recent-app area The current screen guide describes recently used navigation, media, and communication apps plus one additional app. No hide or disable toggle is documented in the reviewed current guide.
Apps available to Android Auto Android Auto works with selected compatible apps, including categories such as music, messaging, and news. Check compatibility before troubleshooting a missing launcher item.
Samsung unused-app handling Samsung phones may temporarily disable apps that have not been used for a while. Open the affected app, or review the phone’s unused-app battery setting.

This distinction gives you a reliable starting point: use launcher customization for an unwanted launcher icon, but do not assume the same setting controls the recent-app recommendations.

Remove an app from the Android Auto launcher

The only source in the reviewed material that gives a hide-app procedure is a Google Android Auto Help Community response from Product Expert Peter R., posted May 28, 2020. It says:

“Go to Android Auto > Settings > Customize launcher and you can deselect apps you do not want to show in the Android Auto launcher.”

Use that as a route to check, not as a guarantee that every current Android Auto release exposes the same menu.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step-by-step

  1. Open Android Auto on your phone. Use the phone’s Android Auto app or its Android Auto settings entry, depending on how your phone presents the service.
  2. Open Settings. Look for the Android Auto settings screen rather than the settings for an individual music, messaging, or navigation app.
  3. Choose Customize launcher. The 2020 community answer uses this exact label. If your phone uses a slightly different label, do not assume another launcher setting has the same function; verify that it controls the Android Auto app list.
  4. Deselect the apps you do not want listed. The community instruction describes removing an app by clearing its selection, not by uninstalling it from the phone.
  5. Check the Android Auto launcher again. The change concerns launcher visibility. It does not establish that the app will disappear from the separate recent-app area.

What this procedure does not prove

The dated answer does not establish which current Android Auto versions, phone manufacturers, vehicles, or regions still show Customize launcher. Google’s current official screen guide identifies the launcher but does not provide the older step-by-step customization path. If the menu is absent, the correct conclusion is that your current combination does not expose the documented control in that location—not that you have missed a universal hidden switch.

If “Customize launcher” is missing

Do not keep changing unrelated phone settings in the hope of revealing the menu. The available evidence supports only a limited conclusion: a Google community answer described the control in 2020, while the current official screen guide does not promise that every device has it.

Check the place where Android Auto is configured

Open Android Auto settings on the phone and inspect the available entries. Android Auto’s presentation has changed across phone software versions, and the menu can be integrated differently by the manufacturer. If there is no item resembling launcher customization, use the current labels shown on your device and consult device-specific Android Auto help rather than assuming a particular path.

Separate a missing control from a missing app

A launcher-customization problem and an app-availability problem are different:

  • If the app is present in the Android Auto launcher and you want it gone, the relevant setting is launcher visibility.
  • If the app never appears, first determine whether its developer supports Android Auto.
  • If an app vanished after a period of non-use on a Samsung phone, check whether the phone temporarily disabled it.

This classification prevents you from treating an unsupported app or a phone-level disablement as an Android Auto launcher bug.

Why recent recommendations keep appearing

Google’s current “Screens and apps on Android Auto” guide describes the recent-app area as showing the navigation, media, and communication apps used most recently, along with one additional app. That is a description of a separate presentation layer, not a list controlled by the launcher’s selection checkboxes.

No documented recommendation-specific switch

The reviewed current Google documentation does not describe a setting to turn off the recent-app area or remove individual recommendation entries. Consequently, you should not promise that clearing app history, uninstalling an app, changing a notification setting, or altering an unrelated launcher preference will reliably suppress a recommendation. Those actions are not established as solutions by the available documentation.

How to interpret an app that remains visible

If an app disappears from the main launcher after you deselect it but still appears in the recent-app row, that behavior is consistent with the two surfaces having different purposes. The launcher selection controls what is listed as an available app; the recent area is populated from recent navigation, media, and communication use plus one additional app. The current guide does not say that users can manually curate that row.

When an app is not in the launcher at all

Not every app installed on your phone can appear in Android Auto. Google says Android Auto supports selected compatible apps, including music, messaging, and news services. Installation on the phone alone does not make an app an Android Auto launcher item.

Check compatibility first

  1. Identify the app you expect to see.
  2. Confirm that the app’s developer provides Android Auto support and that it belongs to a supported category.
  3. If it is not compatible, stop looking for a launcher-selection checkbox; Android Auto will not list it merely because it is installed on the phone.

This also explains why two phones with similar app libraries can show different Android Auto launchers: their installed apps may not have the same Android Auto-compatible versions or support.

Samsung phones: unused apps can be temporarily disabled

Google’s Android Auto troubleshooting guidance notes that Samsung phones may temporarily disable apps that have not been used for a while. This is a phone-level power-management behavior, not an Android Auto preference.

  1. Open the missing app on the phone. Opening it can re-enable an app that Samsung has marked as unused.
  2. Review battery settings if the problem returns. Google identifies settings such as Auto disable unused apps or Put unused apps to sleep. The exact wording and location can vary by Samsung phone and software version.
  3. Recheck Android Auto compatibility. Re-enabling a phone app does not add Android Auto support if the app is not compatible.

A practical troubleshooting decision tree

Use the symptom that matches what you see instead of applying every possible fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The app is listed in the launcher and you want to remove it

  • Open Android Auto on the phone.
  • Look for Settings > Customize launcher.
  • Deselect the unwanted app if the control is available.
  • Check the launcher again, while remembering that the recent-app row is separate.

The launcher-customization menu is not present

  • Record the Android Auto settings labels shown by your phone.
  • Do not assume the 2020 community route is universal today.
  • Use device-specific Android Auto support for the current menu layout.

The app is missing from the launcher

  • Verify that the app is Android Auto-compatible.
  • On a Samsung phone, open the app to restore it if it was disabled as unused.
  • Review the phone’s unused-app battery setting if Samsung continues disabling it.

The app is gone from the launcher but appears in recent apps

  • Recognize that you are seeing the recent-app area, not the launcher list.
  • Do not claim that launcher deselection controls recommendation entries.
  • Understand that the current guide documents no user toggle for removing that area or its individual suggestions.

Before changing anything, identify the exact symptom

Writing down what you see makes troubleshooting faster. “Hide my app” can mean several different things:

  • An icon is in the full launcher: this is the case where Customize launcher may help.
  • An icon appears only in the recent row: this is the recommendation surface, for which no documented hide control is available.
  • An expected app is absent everywhere: check Android Auto compatibility before changing settings.
  • An app used to be available and then vanished: on Samsung, check whether it was disabled as unused.

Take a screenshot while parked if the distinction is unclear. Note whether the app is a navigation, media, communication, news, or another type of phone app. That information does not create a new setting, but it helps you ask for the correct kind of device-specific help.

Common mistakes to avoid

Uninstalling an app to remove an icon

The community procedure removes an app from the Android Auto launcher by deselecting it. It does not instruct you to uninstall the phone app. Uninstalling is therefore an unnecessarily disruptive first step, especially when you may still want the app on the phone.

Assuming every phone has the same menu

The May 28, 2020 answer is useful because it names a concrete path, but it is not a current compatibility matrix. Android Auto’s settings can be presented differently across phone software and manufacturers. If Customize launcher is absent, do not keep searching for a secret universal location or tell another reader that the path must exist on every device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confusing app support with installation

A phone can contain an app that has no Android Auto interface. Only selected compatible apps are available through Android Auto, including supported music, messaging, and news services. Installing an ordinary phone app cannot force it into the car launcher.

Promising to clear recommendations

Google’s current screen guide explains what the recent-app area contains, but it does not document a user control for disabling the area or deleting individual entries. Avoid presenting cache clearing, notification changes, app deletion, or other unrelated actions as guaranteed fixes.

What you need—and what you do not need

This task is software configuration. The documented launcher route requires Android Auto on the phone and access to its settings; it does not require a new cable, wireless adapter, head unit, mount, subscription, or other physical accessory. An accessory might affect how you connect to Android Auto, but it is not established as a way to hide launcher apps or recommendation entries.

You also do not need to remove an app from the phone merely to keep it out of the selectable launcher list. The purpose of launcher customization is to change what is shown in that Android Auto surface while leaving the phone app installed.

Keeping the driving context in view

Google describes Android Auto apps as optimized for driving and says its interface is designed to help drivers focus. Some interactions are subject to safety lockouts. Hiding a launcher icon can reduce the number of choices you see, but the available sources do not provide a measured safety result for doing so. Present it as an organization preference, not as a quantified safety intervention.

Use the car screen only for supported, driving-oriented tasks

Compatibility and safety are related but not identical. An app may be compatible with Android Auto because it provides a driving-oriented interface, while another phone app remains unavailable. The launcher’s selection setting changes visibility; it does not transform an unsupported app into a safe car-screen experience.

Do not fight the interface while moving

If a setting is difficult to find, make the change while parked. Android Auto’s safety design can restrict interactions, and repeatedly searching menus on the road defeats the focus goal described by Google.

What the current documentation leaves open

The available official guidance does not identify which Android Auto releases, regions, vehicles, or phone manufacturers expose Customize launcher today. It also does not identify a current recommendation-specific control. Those limits matter when interpreting instructions copied from older community answers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most defensible approach is therefore conditional:

  • Use Customize launcher if your phone exposes it.
  • Treat the May 28, 2020 community answer as dated guidance rather than a universal current promise.
  • Use compatibility checks for apps that never appear.
  • Check Samsung’s unused-app behavior when a previously available app disappears.
  • Expect the recent-app area to remain governed by Android Auto’s recent-use presentation unless Google documents a new control for it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I hide an app from the Android Auto launcher without uninstalling it?

If your phone exposes Settings > Customize launcher, deselect the compatible app. The documented instruction changes launcher visibility; it does not uninstall the phone app.

Why does an app I deselected still appear in Android Auto?

You may be seeing the separate recent-app area. Google describes that area as recent navigation, media, and communication apps plus one additional app, and does not document a control to curate it.

Is Customize launcher available on every Android phone?

No universal availability is established. The named path comes from a Google Help Community answer posted May 28, 2020, while the current official screen guide does not promise the control on every phone, release, region, or vehicle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is an installed app missing from Android Auto?

Android Auto lists selected compatible apps, not every app installed on a phone. Confirm that the developer supports Android Auto and that the app belongs to a supported category.

What should Samsung users do when an app disappears?

Open the app on the phone to re-enable it if Samsung temporarily disabled it as unused. You can also review settings labeled Auto disable unused apps or Put unused apps to sleep; wording varies by device.

Can I turn off Android Auto recommendations?

The current Google screen guide reviewed here does not document a switch to disable the recent-app area or remove individual recommendation entries. Do not promise that unrelated settings will suppress them.

Do I need a new cable, head unit, or app to hide launcher items?

No. The documented procedure is a phone software setting. No physical accessory or separate launcher-control app is required by that instruction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is hiding apps a measured safety improvement?

Google describes Android Auto as driving-oriented and subject to safety lockouts, but the available guidance provides no measured safety result for hiding launcher icons. Treat it as an organization preference and make changes while parked.

The Bottom Line

For a compatible app in the main launcher, check Android Auto > Settings > Customize launcher and deselect it if that control exists on your phone. The recent-app row is separate: Google documents recent navigation, media, and communication apps plus one additional app, but no current switch to hide that area or its recommendations. If an app is missing altogether, check Android Auto compatibility; on Samsung, also check whether unused-app settings temporarily disabled it.
