What’s actually slowing this PC down?

On most Samsung Galaxy phones, you can hide an app without uninstalling it or putting it behind a lock. Touch and hold an empty part of the Home screen, tap Settings, choose Hide apps on Home and Apps screens, select the app, and tap Done. The icon disappears from both launcher screens, while the app remains installed and usable.
This is useful when you want a less crowded launcher or do not want an app listed in the normal grid. It is not a security feature: Samsung documents that a hidden app can still be found with Apps-screen search and opened. If your goal is to keep another person from seeing an app’s contents, use Secure Folder instead.

What Samsung’s Hide apps feature actually does
Samsung’s support instructions describe Hide apps as a launcher-visibility setting. Selecting an app removes its icon from the Home screen and the Apps screen. The app, its data and its settings stay on the phone; hiding is not an uninstall operation.

Hiding also is not an app lock. Samsung Canada’s guide explains that a hidden app can still be found by entering its name in Apps screen search and opened from the result. Anyone who knows the app’s name and has access to your unlocked phone may therefore be able to launch it.

- Protection: the feature does not password-protect the app or conceal its contents.
Samsung India frames hiding as useful when you do not want certain apps, confidential information or sensitive data to be obvious on the phone. That is a reasonable organization or casual-concealment use, but it should not be interpreted as protection against someone who can search the device.
If you only remove an icon from the Home screen, the app remains visible in the Apps screen. That is a different action from Hide apps, which removes the icon from both places.
Before you start: decide what “hide” needs to mean
There are three separate questions to answer before changing a setting:
- Where should the icon disappear? Home-screen removal affects only the Home screen. Hide apps affects both Home and Apps screens.
- Should the app remain usable? Hide apps leaves it installed and usable. Disable stops the functions of supported pre-installed apps.
- Do you need content protection? A hidden icon is not authentication. Secure Folder is Samsung’s built-in password-protected space for apps and files.
Choosing the right objective prevents a common mistake: hiding an app when you actually want to stop it, or expecting a launcher setting to protect private content.
Hide an app from the Home and Apps screens
This is the primary route documented by Samsung US, India and Australia. Menu wording can differ slightly by Galaxy model, software version and regional variant, but the setting has the same name or a very close equivalent.
- Go to the Home screen. If several panels are available, use any Home screen panel.
- Touch and hold an empty area. Do not press an app icon or widget; the Home-screen customization controls should appear.
- Tap Settings. This opens Home-screen settings.
- Tap Hide apps on Home and Apps screens. On some devices the wording may be shortened, but look for the Hide apps option inside Home-screen settings.
- Select the app or apps. Tap each app you want removed from the launcher screens. Selecting more than one app lets you apply the change together.
- Tap Done. The selected icons should no longer appear on the Home or Apps screen.
This setting changes where the launcher displays the shortcut; it does not ask you to create a PIN, pattern or password. If the app is open when you apply the setting, the current session is not described as being terminated by Samsung’s instructions. Return to the launcher to check the icon’s visibility.
Use the Apps screen menu when the Home-screen route is different
Samsung Canada documents an alternate path for supported layouts:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open the Apps screen by swiping up from the Home screen, if that is how your Galaxy is configured.
- Tap the More options icon, usually shown as three vertical dots.
- Choose Settings.
- Select Hide apps on Home and Apps screens.
- Choose the app or apps, then tap Done.
Not every Galaxy model places the command in the Apps-screen menu. If you do not see it there, use the Home-screen long-press method instead. Samsung’s Australian instructions are specifically scoped to Australian-variant devices, so a label or menu position shown in that guide may not match another region exactly: Samsung Australia’s guide.
Show a hidden app again
Unhiding uses the same setting rather than a separate restore command. Samsung India and Canada describe the following process:

- Open Hide apps on Home and Apps screens using either the Home-screen settings route or the Apps-screen menu route available on your phone.
- Find the app in the Hidden apps area or in the selected-app list.
- Deselect it. On the interface shown by Samsung Canada, this can be done by tapping the red minus icon beside the app.
- Tap Done to apply the change.
The app’s icon should return to the Apps screen. Samsung’s instructions do not describe this process as reinstalling the app or restoring its data; the operation changes the launcher’s visibility selection.
If you hid several apps, remove only the ones you want visible again, or clear the selections shown in the Hidden apps area according to your phone’s interface. Always tap Done; leaving the screen without applying the change may leave the previous visibility choices in place.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to open a hidden app without unhiding it
A hidden app remains searchable from the Apps screen on the interface documented by Samsung Canada. Swipe up to open Apps, tap the search field, type the app’s name and open it from the results. This is useful when you want a cleaner launcher but still need occasional access.
Search availability and the exact search presentation can vary with the Galaxy launcher layout. The important distinction is that hiding the icon does not make the application undiscoverable to someone who can search the phone. Searching is therefore a convenience for the owner, not a privacy barrier.
When checking your own setup, search by the app’s installed name rather than relying on its former icon position. If the result appears, that confirms the app remains installed even though it is absent from the ordinary Home and Apps grids.
Hide, remove, disable or protect: choose the right Samsung feature
These actions solve different problems. The table below keeps the practical differences together so you do not choose Hide apps when you actually need access control.
Recommended Free Tools
| Action | Where the icon appears | Can the app run? | What it is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hide apps on Home and Apps screens | Removed from both Home and Apps screens | Yes; Samsung Canada documents opening it through Apps search | Reduce launcher clutter or keep an app out of the normal icon lists |
| Remove from Home screen | Removed from Home only; remains in Apps | Yes | Keep the Home screen tidy while retaining the normal Apps-screen shortcut |
| Disable | Launcher behavior depends on the app and device | No; disabling stops the app’s functions | Stop certain pre-installed apps when Samsung exposes a Disable command |
| Secure Folder | Apps and files are placed inside a protected folder | Yes, after authentication | Restrict access to selected apps or files with a password-protected space |
Samsung UK explains that disabling is offered only for some pre-installed apps and stops their functions. It is not a substitute for Hide apps: disabling changes whether the app operates, while hiding changes where its icon is shown.
When the objective is to keep other people from opening an app or seeing its contents, Samsung’s built-in Secure Folder is the relevant alternative. Samsung describes it as a password-protected folder for apps and files in its Gulf support guidance: Samsung Gulf’s Secure Folder and hiding guidance. Hide apps alone does not provide that protection.
Which method fits your goal?
You want fewer icons
Use Hide apps if you want an app absent from both launcher surfaces but still installed and available. Use Home-screen removal instead if keeping the app in the Apps screen is acceptable and you want the smallest possible change.

You still need to use the app
Hide it, then open Apps search whenever needed. Do not disable it: Samsung says disabling stops the functions of supported pre-installed apps.
The Tool Desk

Do not rely on a hidden icon. A person with access to the unlocked phone may search for the app by name. Move the relevant app or files into Secure Folder so access requires authentication.
You want to stop a built-in app
Check whether the app’s App info screen offers Disable. Samsung limits this control to some pre-installed apps, so it may not be present for every system application. Hiding does not stop background or foreground functions.
You only want to tidy one Home panel
Remove the shortcut from the Home screen rather than using Hide apps. That leaves the app in the Apps screen and avoids making it less obvious to you when you need it. Hide apps is the broader visibility change.
What to check when the Hide apps option is missing
The long-press menu has no Settings entry
Make sure you are holding an empty part of the Home screen, not an icon, widget or folder. Then look for the Home-screen settings control in the customization panel. If the panel uses different labels, open the option that controls Home-screen layout or settings and search there for Hide apps.
You cannot find the command on the Apps screen
Open the Apps screen and inspect the More options menu. Samsung documents this route only on supported layouts, so its absence does not necessarily mean the feature is unavailable. Try the Home-screen route and check for the exact phrase Hide apps on Home and Apps screens.
The menu wording does not match Samsung’s screenshots
Samsung support pages cover different regional variants. The India page was updated September 1, 2026, and the Australia page was updated August 20, 2026; both show the Home-screen settings approach. Labels and placement can vary with model, software version and region. Look for an equivalent Hide apps setting rather than assuming the function has been removed.
The icon still appears after you tapped Done
Reopen the Hide apps setting and confirm that the app is listed as selected or under Hidden apps. Apply the change again with Done, then check both the Home screen and Apps screen. If you are seeing a search result rather than an icon in a list, that is expected: Samsung documents that hidden apps can remain discoverable through Apps-screen search.
You expected the app to stop working
That expectation describes disabling, not hiding. Return to the app’s settings and check whether a Disable control is available. Only some pre-installed apps support it, and disabling stops their functions.

You cannot find the app to select
Confirm that you are in the Hide apps setting, not a Home-screen option that only removes shortcuts. The Hide apps list is where you select installed apps for removal from both launcher screens. If the app is already hidden, look under Hidden apps or the selected-app area and deselect it to make it visible again.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Regional and software-version notes
Samsung US and India present the Home-screen long-press route. Samsung Canada presents both that route and the Apps-screen More options route. Samsung Australia’s article is written for Australian-variant Galaxy devices. These differences affect menu placement and wording, not the central behavior: selecting an app in Hide apps removes its launcher icons without uninstalling it.
For the US procedure, see Samsung’s “Manage apps on your Galaxy phone or tablet” support page. Samsung’s general Apps-screen explanation is available at “Access and organize the apps on your Galaxy phone.” The India support article, updated September 1, 2026, is at “How to hide or unhide apps on your Galaxy Smartphone.”
Because the feature is built into Samsung’s launcher, the basic procedure does not require buying an app, subscription or accessory. The exact controls still depend on the Galaxy model, software version and regional interface.
Practical checks after hiding an app
- Open the Apps screen and confirm the icon is absent from the normal app grid.
- Check the Home screen separately; hiding is intended to remove the icon from both surfaces.
- Search for the app by name to confirm it remains installed and usable.
- If another person must not open it, use Secure Folder rather than relying on icon removal.
- If the app needs to be stopped, investigate Disable for that app instead of Hide apps.
- Remember which apps you hid; the search route is the normal way to launch one without reversing the setting.
Frequently asked questions
Does hiding an app uninstall it?
No. Samsung’s Hide apps setting removes the icon from the Home and Apps screens while leaving the app installed.
Can someone still open a hidden app?
Yes. Samsung Canada says a hidden app can be found by typing its name into Apps-screen search and opened from the result. Hide apps is not an app lock.
Will hiding stop notifications or app functions?
Hiding changes launcher visibility. If you need an app to stop functioning, check whether Samsung offers Disable; that command is available only for some pre-installed apps and stops their functions.
How do I show hidden apps again?
Open Hide apps on Home and Apps screens, find the app under Hidden apps or the selected list, deselect it (Samsung Canada shows a red minus control), and tap Done.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

That is expected on the interface Samsung Canada documents. Searchability is how you can open a hidden app without restoring its icon, and it also means hiding does not conceal the app from someone using the phone.
Best Value
Is Secure Folder the same as Hide apps?
No. Hide apps removes launcher icons. Secure Folder is Samsung’s password-protected folder for apps and files, making it the more appropriate built-in option when authentication is required.
Can I hide more than one app at once?
Yes. In the Hide apps list, select each app you want removed and tap Done once to apply the selections.
Why does my Galaxy show different labels?
Samsung’s US, India, Canada and Australia guides show regional and layout differences. Look for the equivalent Hide apps setting in Home-screen settings, and try the Apps-screen More options route only if your layout provides it.
Key points to remember
Samsung’s built-in setting is a visibility tool: it removes selected icons from the Home and Apps screens while leaving the apps installed. The same setting reverses the change by deselecting an app and tapping Done. Because Apps-screen search may still reveal a hidden app, this feature is suitable for organization or casual concealment, not for protecting private content. Secure Folder is the built-in choice when authentication is required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I hide an app without locking it?
Yes. Use Home-screen settings, choose Hide apps on Home and Apps screens, select the app, and tap Done. The app stays installed and usable.
How do I find a hidden app?
Open the Apps screen, tap search, type the app’s name and open it from the result. Samsung documents this behavior on supported Galaxy interfaces.
What is the fastest way to unhide an app?
Open the same Hide apps setting, remove the app from Hidden apps or the selected list, and tap Done.
What should I use for real privacy?
Use Samsung Secure Folder, which Samsung describes as a password-protected folder for apps and files. Hiding an icon alone does not protect the app’s contents.
The Bottom Line
Use Hide apps on Home and Apps screens when you want a cleaner launcher without uninstalling or disabling an app. Remember that the app can remain searchable and openable. For protected access, use Secure Folder; for stopping a supported pre-installed app, use Disable instead.
