How to Hide an Ad or Advertiser in Google Search

To hide one unwanted advertisement in Google Search, open the ad’s More or Info menu and choose Block ad. Google says it will try to keep that specific ad from appearing on Google services and partner sites for at least six months, but blocking is an effort rather than a permanent guarantee.

Other controls solve different problems: Fewer like this reduces ads about a brand or topic without blocking it, Report ad sends a suspected policy violation to Google but does not hide the ad, and turning off personalized ads still leaves contextual advertising in place.

What “hide an ad” means in Google Search

Search results can contain ordinary organic listings and paid advertisements. The controls described here apply to the paid placements marked as ads. They do not remove an organic result, suppress an entire website from Search, or prevent a company from appearing in non-ad results.

Google’s ad controls work at different levels. Blocking targets a particular ad. Ad customization changes the kinds of ads Google tries to show more often. Personalization settings change how account information and activity are used. Reporting starts a policy review. Choosing the right control matters because none of these actions is a universal “never show me this company again” switch.

Before you try to hide the placement

First confirm that you are looking at a sponsored result. The More or Info control must belong to the ad itself; opening the browser’s general menu or an organic result will not expose Google’s advertising controls. If several sponsored results are on the page, inspect the one you want to affect rather than assuming a setting applies to every ad in the group.

Google’s labels and icons can vary by device, account, sign-in state, region, and current Search design. A current browser is generally the simplest place to use My Ad Center. If a control is missing, that does not necessarily mean you performed the steps incorrectly: the feature may not be offered for that impression or account state.

Hide one ad with Block ad

Desktop instructions

  1. Run your search and locate the paid result you do not want to see.
  2. Move to the ad and open its More or Info menu. The icon and label can vary with the current Search layout.
  3. Select Block ad.
  4. Complete any confirmation shown by Google.

Phone or tablet instructions

  1. Open Google Search in your browser or the Google app and find the advertisement.
  2. Tap the ad’s More or Info control.
  3. Tap Block ad and confirm if prompted.

If you cannot find the control, make sure you are opening the menu belonging to the sponsored result itself, not the browser menu or the menu for an organic listing. Labels can differ by account, device, region, and interface version; Google’s controls are easiest to use in a current browser.

What happens after blocking

Google says it will do its best to suppress the blocked ad on Google services and partner sites for at least six months. “At least six months” is the stated effort period, not a promise that every impression will disappear. Blocking one creative also does not necessarily block every advertisement from the same company.

  • The same ad may occasionally appear because the suppression system is not perfect.
  • A different advertising company may be serving a similar promotion.
  • The advertiser may use another headline, image, landing page, or ad format.
  • A related ad can be selected by the context of a new search rather than by the earlier ad’s identity.

The six-month period should therefore be understood as Google’s stated attempt to keep the identified ad away, not as a deletion request or an expiration date after which all ads from that business are permanently permitted or prohibited. You do not need to buy software, install an extension, or use a third-party ad blocker to try this documented Google control.

Identify the advertiser before deciding what to do

When you want to know who paid for a placement, open the ad’s menu and choose About this advertiser, when that option is offered. The panel can provide advertiser information that is not obvious from the visible headline or domain.

Google also provides an Ads Transparency Center. You can search it by advertiser or website and, where filters are available, narrow results by serving region and date. This is useful when several companies use similar names, when an agency is buying the placement, or when you want to check whether a particular advertiser is running multiple creatives.

About this advertiser is an information tool, not a blocking control. After inspecting the details, return to the ad menu and use Block ad if your goal is to reduce that specific placement.

Checking the advertiser first can also explain why a block appears ineffective. Two promotions that look alike may be paid for by different entities, and a company’s visible brand name may not be the same name shown in the advertiser information. Record the advertiser or website shown if you need to compare a later impression with the one you blocked.

Choose the control that matches your goal

Control Use it when you want to What it does What it does not do
Block ad Stop a particular Search advertisement from being shown again as often as possible. Attempts to suppress that ad on Google services and partner sites for at least six months. Does not guarantee that every similar ad, format, or campaign will disappear.
Fewer like this See fewer ads about a brand or subject. Signals a preference so Google tries to show fewer ads of that type. Does not block the brand or topic. A directly related search can still produce a contextual ad.
Turn off personalized ads Stop using saved account information and activity to personalize advertising in the applicable Google setting. Changes personalization based on your sign-in state and device or browser scope. Does not remove advertising. Context, including your active search, can still determine which ad appears.
Report ad Flag an ad that you believe violates Google’s advertising policies. Sends information to Google for review. Does not itself block or hide the ad.
About this advertiser Find out who is responsible for a placement. Shows advertiser details where Google offers them. Is not an ad-blocking setting.

See fewer ads about a brand or topic

If an ad is merely irrelevant or repetitive rather than prohibited, open its menu and choose Fewer like this when available. You can also manage these preferences in My Ad Center by opening Customize ads.

This is a preference signal, not a blacklist. Google’s own explanation is that customizing ads does not block ad topics or brands. A person searching directly for flights, mortgages, phones, or another subject can still receive a contextual advertisement related to that search, even after asking for fewer ads about the same category.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When this option is the better choice

  • Use it when you want to reduce a recurring category but do not need an absolute block.
  • Use it when the ad is legitimate but not useful to you.
  • Use Block ad instead when one exact creative is the problem.
  • Use Report ad instead when you suspect deception, malware, prohibited products, or another policy violation.

Because this setting changes what Google tries to show more often, it can affect future ad selection without removing the advertising space from a results page. A direct search can still supply enough contextual information for Google to show a relevant ad, even when a related topic has been marked for fewer appearances.

Turn off personalized advertising

Turning off personalized ads is broader than hiding one ad. It changes whether Google uses saved account information and activity to tailor advertisements in the relevant Google settings. It does not turn advertising off: contextual signals, especially the search you are actively making, can still influence the ads displayed.

Signed-in scope

When you are signed in, My Ad Center preferences generally follow your Google account across devices where you are also signed in. If you block an ad or change personalization there, another signed-in device can reflect the same account-level preference, subject to Google’s availability and interface rules.

Signed-out scope

When you are signed out, Search personalization controls apply to the browser or device where you change them. They should not be treated as a universal setting for every browser, phone, computer, or account you use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because Google can change labels and availability by region, account state, and product version, check the setting’s explanatory text before saving it. The important expectation is unchanged: less personalization means different ad selection, not an ad-free Search page.

Turning personalization off also is not a substitute for blocking an ad. It addresses the use of saved information and activity for tailoring, whereas Block ad asks Google to suppress a particular creative. You can use both controls, but they solve different problems and have different scopes.

Report an ad when it may violate policy

Use Report ad when you believe a paid result breaches Google’s advertising rules. Open the ad’s More or Info menu, choose Report ad, select the closest reason, and submit the report if Google asks for additional details.

Reporting and blocking are separate actions. Google’s help documentation states, “Reporting an ad doesn’t block that ad.” If you want both a policy review and fewer appearances, report the ad and then use Block ad separately when that control is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Examples of when to report

  • The ad appears deceptive or impersonates another organization.
  • The destination seems unsafe, malicious, or materially different from the claim in the ad.
  • The promotion appears to involve a product or practice restricted by Google’s policies.
  • The ad uses misleading pricing, guarantees, or other information that you believe violates the rules.

A report is not a personal relevance vote. If you simply dislike an otherwise compliant ad, blocking or choosing fewer similar ads is the appropriate route.

Do not assume that submitting a report is confirmation that Google will remove the ad. It sends the suspected issue for review; the separate block action is the one intended to reduce your own exposure while the review process is distinct.

Why a blocked ad can still appear

The block covers a specific ad, not every campaign

Advertisers can create multiple headlines, descriptions, images, landing pages, and formats. Google may recognize the next impression as a different ad even when it promotes the same company or offer.

A different advertising company is involved

The name shown in one ad may not match the company behind another placement. Use About this advertiser to inspect the responsible party before assuming the block failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Search context overrides a preference

Google can select a contextual ad because it relates to the query, location, language, or other immediate conditions. This is especially relevant after choosing Fewer like this or turning off personalization; those settings do not remove contextual advertising.

Account and device scope differ

A signed-in account preference and a signed-out browser preference do not have the same reach. If an ad appears on another device, check whether you are using the same Google account and whether the browser is signed in.

The interface has changed

Menu placement and labels can change as Google updates Search. Look for More, Info, or an equivalent ad-information icon attached to the sponsored result. If no block option appears, the feature may not be offered for that impression, account state, or region.

A similar-looking impression is not proof of a failed block

Compare the advertiser information, headline, destination, and format rather than relying only on the logo or broad subject. A new creative or a different advertiser can resemble the blocked one while remaining a separate ad for Google’s control. This is why the six-month effort is described for the specific ad, not for every promotion connected with a brand.

How to troubleshoot a control that is missing

  1. Check that the result is labeled as an ad and that you opened its own More or Info menu.
  2. Try the current Google Search experience in a browser if the Google app does not show the same option.
  3. Confirm whether you are signed in. Signed-in My Ad Center preferences and signed-out browser or device controls have different scopes.
  4. Look for an equivalent information icon if the words More or Info are not visible.
  5. Consider whether the option is unavailable for your region, account state, or that particular impression.
  6. If a similar ad returns, open About this advertiser and compare the responsible advertiser before repeating the action.

These checks cannot force Google to offer a control that is unavailable, but they distinguish a misplaced menu from a genuine availability difference. Google’s interface can change, so follow the explanatory text shown at the time you make the choice.

A practical decision path

  1. Want one exact ad gone? Open its ad menu and select Block ad.
  2. Want fewer ads in a category? Select Fewer like this or use My Ad Center’s Customize ads.
  3. Want less use of account activity for targeting? Turn off personalized ads, remembering that contextual ads remain.
  4. Think the ad breaks policy? Select Report ad; reporting does not perform the block for you.
  5. Unsure who is behind it? Open About this advertiser and, if necessary, investigate the advertiser or website in the Ads Transparency Center.

Limits, availability, and privacy expectations

Google’s controls are service settings, not a guarantee that every advertisement from a company will disappear. Availability can vary by device, account sign-in state, browser, region, and current Google interface. Some My Ad Center features may not appear in every personalization state.

Blocking an ad and turning off personalization address different concerns. Blocking asks Google to suppress a particular ad. Personalization controls affect how information is used to select ads. Neither setting removes the underlying Search results page’s advertising slots, and neither changes the organic ranking of websites.

If you share a device, remember that signed-out preferences can remain local to that browser or device. For account-level preferences, verify the Google account shown in My Ad Center before changing a setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no product purchase or physical equipment requirement for these steps. Google’s own ad menu, My Ad Center, and Ads Transparency Center provide the controls described here. A third-party ad blocker may have different behavior, but it is not required for the documented Google Search actions.

Quick checklist

  • Confirm that the item is a paid ad, not an organic result.
  • Open the ad’s own More or Info menu.
  • Choose Block ad for one specific advertisement.
  • Choose Fewer like this for a preference about a brand or topic.
  • Use Report ad only when you suspect a policy violation, and remember that it does not block the ad.
  • Check About this advertiser when the payer is unclear.
  • Expect Google’s stated six-month blocking effort to be imperfect and limited to the relevant ad.
  • Check sign-in state and device scope when a preference seems not to carry over.
  • Use the Ads Transparency Center to search an advertiser or website and apply serving-region or date filters when available.
  • Compare a returning impression’s advertiser and creative before concluding that the original block failed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Block ad remove every ad from that company?

No. Google describes Block ad as an attempt to suppress the specific ad on Google services and partner sites for at least six months. A company can use another headline, image, landing page, format, or advertising company, so similar promotions may still appear.

Why am I still seeing an ad after blocking it?

Blocking is not a guarantee. The impression may be a different creative, may come from another advertiser, or may have been selected because of the context of a new search. Check About this advertiser before assuming the same ad returned.

Does Fewer like this block a brand?

No. Fewer like this and My Ad Center’s Customize ads signal a preference for fewer ads about a brand or topic. Google says customization does not block ad topics or brands, and a directly related search can still show a contextual ad.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will turning off personalized ads remove all advertising?

No. It changes whether saved account information and activity are used to personalize ads in the applicable setting. Contextual factors, including the search you are making, can still determine which ads appear.

What is the difference between Report ad and Block ad?

Report ad sends a suspected policy violation to Google for review. Block ad asks Google to reduce appearances of a particular ad. Google explicitly states that reporting an ad does not block it, so use both separately if both outcomes are wanted.

How can I find out who paid for an ad?

Open the ad’s More or Info menu and choose About this advertiser when available. You can also search Google’s Ads Transparency Center by advertiser or website and filter by serving region and date where those filters are offered.

Do my ad choices follow me to another device?

Signed-in My Ad Center preferences generally apply across devices where you are signed in to the same Google account. Signed-out Search personalization controls apply to the browser or device where you changed them, so they should not be treated as universal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if I cannot see Block ad?

Make sure you opened the menu attached to a sponsored result, not an organic listing or the browser menu. Look for More, Info, or an equivalent icon, try a current browser, and remember that availability can vary by region, device, account state, and impression.

Can these controls remove an organic Search result?

No. They apply to paid advertisements. Blocking or customizing ads does not suppress an organic result, remove a website from Search, or change organic rankings.

Do I need a paid service or ad-blocking extension?

No. The documented actions use Google’s own ad menu, My Ad Center, and Ads Transparency Center. These are free settings, although they do not promise an ad-free Search page.

The Bottom Line

For one unwanted Google Search placement, open its More or Info menu and choose Block ad. Google says it will try to suppress that specific ad on its services and partner sites for at least six months, but the effort is not a guarantee and does not cover every similar campaign. Use Fewer like this for a preference, Report ad for a suspected policy violation, and About this advertiser to identify who paid. Turning off personalized ads changes targeting rather than removing contextual advertising.
