Start by verifying exactly how customers can reach you, then make that route easy to find everywhere customers look. Coordinate with the road project team about access and signs, keep directions current as work phases change, and track your own business results to decide what to adjust. There is no established universal revenue-loss figure or recovery timeline for construction disruption.
First, establish how customers can reach you
Do not treat a road-closure notice as proof that your business is inaccessible. Confirm the approved route and check the full customer journey: approach roads and turns, the entrance customers should use, parking, pedestrian access, and delivery access. Ask the project contact what phase is underway and what access changes are planned next.

Walk or drive the approaches customers actually take. Note where the entrance becomes hard to see, where a detour is confusing, and whether barriers or signs affect access. Give customers directions that describe the verified route rather than relying on general wording such as “we’re still open.”

Coordinate access and mitigation with the project team
Contact the road project owner or its public information contact early, and stay in touch as the work advances. Affected businesses can help identify practical impacts, including customer peak periods and approaches where drivers miss an entrance. FHWA identifies maintaining business and resident access as a work-zone traffic-management objective and recommends involving businesses in mitigation planning (FHWA work-zone traffic management; FHWA business access guidance).

Make requests concrete: identify the affected entrance, the approach customers use, the hours that matter, and the specific confusion or obstruction. Depending on conditions, possible measures include directional information or signs, or relocating access. The project owner or local authority controls public-road traffic devices; coordinate with them rather than installing or changing official traffic signs yourself. FHWA’s training notes that an obscured entrance may call for a temporary entrance or clear signage (FHWA Module 5 training).
Make accurate access information easy to find
Use consistent, verified directions wherever customers may check before visiting: your website, business profile, social accounts, booking page, storefront notice, and customer messages. State whether you are open, which entrance to use, where parking is available, and how to contact you if the route is unclear. Put a date or “last checked” time on directions that may change, and revise them when the project phase or route changes.

- Product Specifications: the "Construction Entrance" sign has dimensions of approximately 24 × 24 inches; This sign acts as a critical alert system, steering pedestrians toward safer pathways and ensuring they are well-informed about the surrounding area
- Product Material: crafted from 20 mil thick, heavy-duty, rust-proof reflective material, combined with laminated aluminum, the "Construction Ahead" sign exhibits exceptional resistance to harsh weather conditions; Be it the relentless sun, pouring rain, or wild winds, this sign stands rigorously tested against nature's elements, ensuring continuous visibility and utility throughout its lifespan
- Easy to Install: prioritizing the user's experience, the construction sign features rounded edges, minimizing any risk of scratches or injuries during installation; Pre-punched with reserved mounting holes and accompanied by mounting screws, users can effortlessly and securely apply the sign, ensuring swift deployment at construction sites
- High Visibility: designed with a vibrant orange base complemented by a high-efficiency reflective film, this sign ensures notable visibility in varied lighting conditions; Its carefully selected color and text combinations meet safety standards, facilitating easier readability and recognition, thus elevating safety levels in and around construction zones
- Lamination Protection: the laminate layer acts as a formidable shield, resisting rain and wind, and maintaining the sign's appearance; Not only does this layer efficiently fend off graffiti and other defacing elements, but it also guards against erosion, UV radiation, and general wear and tear, ensuring the sign remains effective and clean
A storefront or portable sidewalk sign can help make “open” visible or point toward an alternate entrance, but check local sign and right-of-way rules before placing anything. Signage is an access option described in FHWA guidance, not a guarantee of restored sales or an endorsement of a particular retail sign.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose outreach to fit the scale of disruption
For a short, minor job, routine project information and a clear access notice may be enough. Longer or more disruptive work may justify broader outreach. FHWA describes project information, alternate-route communication, timing, and evaluation as elements of public information efforts (FHWA work-zone public information guidance; FHWA work-zone outreach guidance).

- Fast updates: Use channels you control, such as your website, business profile, social accounts, and opted-in customer messages.
- Local reach: Ask neighboring businesses, a business association, or the project information office whether they can share the same verified access notice.
- Printed directions: A window notice, route card, or flyer can help customers who need a physical reminder; use it as one channel, not a substitute for current online directions.
Keep each version specific and consistent. If you cannot confirm a route or parking arrangement, ask the project contact before publishing it rather than guessing.
Measure what changes for your business
There is no general sales-loss percentage or tested recovery period established by the cited transportation guidance. Build a practical picture from your own records: sales, transactions, cancellations, visits if you count them, and customer questions about access. Compare similar weekdays and times where possible, and note the construction phase alongside the figures. These comparisons are directional, not proof that construction or a particular communication caused a change.

FHWA recommends evaluating work-zone strategies and lists measures such as traffic volume, travel time, queues, delay, incidents, complaints, and user costs; these are not a business sales formula (FHWA work-zone traffic management). Review your business measures when access changes or a new message goes live, then correct the part of the customer journey that still causes confusion.

Use offers or alternate service options selectively
A temporary offer, delivery option, flexible appointment, or alternate pickup arrangement may address a specific inconvenience, but none is established as a reliable way to recover construction-related losses. Consider costs, gross margin, staffing, and capacity before making a change. Track the response against your own records instead of assuming a discount will pay for itself.
