How to Help Wombats Safely If You Find One in Your Yard

Keep people and pets away, watch from a safe distance, and leave an apparently healthy wombat alone. Do not chase it into a burrow, touch it, feed it, photograph it at close range, or try to move it. If it appears injured, sick, affected by mange, orphaned, or a joey may be involved, contact a current local wildlife rescue or rehabilitation service and follow its instructions.

Wombats are wild animals. The Tasmanian Department of Natural Resources and Environment warns: “Wombats are wild animals and although they look cute and cuddly, they can bite and scratch severely, especially when injured, afraid or defending their territory.”

How do I help a wombat safely if I find one in my yard?

Start by creating space, not by attempting a rescue. Take children indoors, bring dogs and other pets inside or secure them well away from the animal, and keep yourself several metres back. Observe quietly without surrounding the wombat or blocking its route. A wombat that is simply passing through or resting and shows no obvious problem normally needs privacy rather than human assistance.

Never enter a burrow after a wombat, reach into one, or try to force the animal out. A frightened or injured wombat can defend itself, and a burrow is an unsafe place for a person to intervene. The correct response depends on what you can safely observe from outside: normal movement with no visible injury, an apparent health problem, signs of sarcoptic mange, a possible joey, or a conflict involving a burrow or property.

Immediate steps for the first few minutes

  1. Remove pressure. Put children and pets inside. Do not let anyone gather around the wombat, call it, corner it, or use a flash close to it.
  2. Stay outside its escape path. Keep away from the animal and from any burrow entrance. Do not stand between the wombat and cover or a suspected burrow.
  3. Observe without handling. Note where it is, whether it is moving normally, and whether you can see a wound, severe weakness, unusual skin loss, or a joey. Do not approach to obtain a better look.
  4. Do not provide food, water, medicine, or home treatment. Feeding can encourage close contact, and treatment or capture requires trained rescuers and, in some places, authorization.
  5. Choose the least-intervention option. Leave a healthy animal undisturbed. For any welfare concern, contact a local wildlife rescue or rehabilitation provider and describe what you saw.

Keep your distance while making the call. A rescuer can tell you whether continued observation is useful and whether any action is lawful in your state.

Decision guide: match the situation to the safe response

What you can safely observe What to do What not to do
Appears healthy, alert and moving normally Keep people and pets back; allow it to leave or rest without disturbance. Do not feed, touch, pursue, photograph at close range, or follow it into a burrow.
Visible injury, illness, weakness or possible orphaning Call a local wildlife rescue or rehabilitation service and report the location and observations. Do not capture, treat, raise or transport it yourself.
Hair loss, crusting or other signs that could be mange Keep away and contact local wildlife rescue for advice. Do not touch or catch the wombat, and do not apply medication.
Joey visible in a pouch or nearby Seek expert instructions before any contact or removal. Do not remove a joey from the pouch before receiving advice.
Burrow threatens a project, road, fence or other property Pause the work and check the relevant state wildlife authority or a qualified wildlife professional. Do not block, fill, damage or destroy an active burrow, and do not pursue the wombat underground.

If the wombat appears healthy

The safest help is non-interference. Leave a clear, quiet route and let the wombat move away on its own. A resident does not need to relocate a healthy wombat simply because it is in a yard. Watching from a distance lets you notice a genuine problem without creating one through pursuit or handling.

Keep pets indoors or securely separated for the entire encounter. Even a dog that is normally calm can cause a chase, and a wombat defending itself can bite or scratch. Keep children away rather than allowing a quick touch or photograph. Do not offer fruit, vegetables, bread, pet food or water; the guidance cited for this situation supports coexistence, not provisioning.

If the wombat enters or approaches a burrow, stop observing from close range and do not follow. Never put a hand, camera, hose or tool into the opening. Leave the area quiet and check later from a distance, provided doing so does not bring people or pets near the entrance.

If it remains in the yard

A wombat may rest or take time to leave. Do not interpret a quiet animal as one that needs to be picked up. Continue keeping the yard calm, leave its route open, and keep pets secured. If it resumes normal movement, the appropriate response remains observation without interference.

Call a wildlife rescue service if you cannot tell whether it is healthy without getting closer, if it cannot move normally, or if it is exposed to a road, domestic animal, fence or machinery. Explain that it is still present and where it is located. The rescuer can decide whether a visit or further monitoring is appropriate.

How to observe without turning observation into a rescue

Use only what is visible from a safe position. Note whether the wombat is walking normally, can change position, and appears able to move away. Record any obvious wound, severe weakness, extensive hair loss or crusting, or a possible joey. Do not circle the animal, shine lights at it, call to it, or repeatedly approach for a clearer view.

Describe what you saw rather than diagnosing it. “The animal has large areas of missing hair” gives a rescuer useful information; “it definitely has mange” does not establish a diagnosis. A simple time and location record can help the service understand whether the animal has moved, but it should never require you to remain close to a burrow or block the animal’s path.

If it is injured, sick or apparently orphaned

Call a local wildlife rescue or rehabilitation provider as soon as you can do so without approaching the animal. Give the operator the exact location or a clear landmark, the time you saw it, what it was doing, and the visible problem. Mention whether a burrow, road, fence or domestic animal is nearby. Follow the rescuer’s instructions precisely; they may ask you to continue observing from a safe position or to leave the site clear.

Do not try to provide first aid, put the wombat in a box, wrap it in a blanket, transport it in a vehicle, or raise it at home. Tasmania’s public guidance directs people to a rescue and rehabilitation provider and says not to attempt care themselves. The NSW government’s professional code and initial-treatment guidance are written for authorized rescue and rehabilitation workers, not as a homeowner’s handling manual.

An animal that looks quiet is not necessarily safe to handle. Pain, fear and territorial defense can make an injured wombat dangerous at close range. If the animal is near a road or another immediate hazard, tell the rescue service exactly what is happening rather than attempting a self-directed capture.

If you suspect sarcoptic mange

Sarcoptic mange is a skin disease that can affect wombats and can be transmitted to people. Possible signs may include conspicuous hair loss, crusting or a severely altered coat, but you should not move closer to confirm a diagnosis. WomSAT’s public advice is to avoid touching or catching a mange-affected wombat and to contact local wildlife rescue for assistance or advice.

Keep children and animals away from the area while you seek help. Do not apply creams, oils, pesticides or veterinary medicines, and do not try to restrain the wombat so someone else can treat it. A rescuer can assess the animal and decide what intervention, if any, is appropriate and permitted locally.

If a joey may be involved

A joey can be in a pouch or nearby, and an adult that appears distressed may not be alone. If you see a small wombat, movement near a pouch, or a joey separated from its mother, call local wildlife rescue before touching either animal. Tell the service exactly what you saw and whether the adult is present.

Do not remove a joey from a pouch before obtaining expert advice. Do not carry a joey indoors, offer milk or food, or attempt to reunite animals by yourself. The safest first action is to keep the area quiet and follow the rescuer’s directions about observation and any permitted intervention.

Burrows, fences and other property concerns

A burrow is not an invitation to inspect, block or fill it. Pursuing a wombat underground can put you in a confined, defensive-animal encounter. Destroying an active burrow can bury wombats alive, according to NSW government guidance. Do not pour material into the entrance, collapse the roof, place objects across it, or use a vehicle or machinery nearby while an animal may be inside.

Property work requires jurisdiction-specific advice. In NSW, the published guidance explains protections for wombats and states that trapping and relocation are not permitted there. It also describes ways authorized personnel can establish that a burrow is inactive before lawful work. Those procedures are not a do-it-yourself test for a resident.

South Australia has its own protections for wombat burrows and specified exceptions. A rule that applies in South Australia may not apply in NSW or Tasmania, and neither state’s guidance should be treated as national law. Before digging, fencing, grading, filling or repairing near a burrow, stop the work and contact the relevant state wildlife authority or a qualified local wildlife professional.

What if the wombat is near a road, fence or machinery?

Keep yourself and pets out of the hazard area and call wildlife rescue with the precise location. Do not chase the animal toward safety, pull it away from a fence, or attempt to lift it clear of traffic. A rescuer can assess whether an intervention is possible and can coordinate with the relevant authority. If work is underway near a burrow, stop machinery and pause the project until the wildlife implications and local rules are clear.

How to contact a rescue service effectively

Use a current local wildlife rescue or rehabilitation directory, state wildlife authority, or council referral. Contact details and service coverage can change, so do not rely on an old number saved from a previous encounter. The Wombat Protection Society of Australia also maintains supplementary rescue-contact information, but availability still depends on location and current capacity.

Have these details ready:

  • Nearest street address, property access point or a map landmark.
  • Whether the wombat is in an open yard, beside a road, at a burrow, or near fencing or machinery.
  • What you observed without approaching: normal movement, inability to move, visible wounds, severe skin changes, a possible joey or other concern.
  • When you first noticed it and whether it has moved since.
  • Whether children, dogs, livestock or other people can be kept away.

Describe observations rather than assigning a diagnosis. Saying “large areas of hair appear missing” is more useful than declaring that the wombat definitely has mange. If the service asks for a photograph, take one only from a safe distance and only if doing so does not draw you closer or disturb the animal.

Why feeding, touching and improvised treatment are unsafe

Feeding changes the encounter from a wild-animal sighting into close contact. It can draw a wombat toward people, pets or buildings and may make later professional assessment more difficult. It is not a substitute for rescue advice, especially when the animal is injured or orphaned.

Touching or catching exposes you to bites, scratches and disease risks and exposes the wombat to stress and injury. A carrier, blanket or improvised restraint does not make an untrained capture safe. Medication is also not a harmless experiment: the wrong substance or dose can worsen an animal’s condition, and treatment may require authorization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Close photographs are not worth the risk. Use distance as your safety control, not protective clothing or a plan to move quickly. If you cannot tell whether the wombat is healthy without approaching, treat that uncertainty as a reason to call a rescuer rather than a reason to get closer.

Jurisdiction matters

The public advice available for wombats comes from state and specialist sources, not one Australia-wide household rule. Tasmania’s “Living with Wombats” guidance covers safe coexistence, the risk of severe bites and scratches, avoiding pursuit into burrows, and referral for injured or orphaned animals. NSW guidance covers coexistence, burrow management, protections and relocation restrictions. South Australia publishes separate information on protection for wombat burrows.

NSW’s “Code of practice for injured, sick and orphaned wombats” is the fourth edition, dated June 25, 2026. It is a professional document for authorized rescuers and rehabilitators, alongside separate initial-treatment guidance; its publication does not authorize householders to perform those procedures.

When advice concerns a burrow, relocation, property work or an animal in immediate danger, identify your state before acting. If you are unsure which authority covers your address, start with the current state wildlife agency or a local rescue directory and explain the situation. Do not assume that a practice described for NSW, South Australia or Tasmania is lawful elsewhere.

A low-risk checklist before you leave the area

  • People are indoors or well away from the wombat.
  • Dogs and other pets are secured and cannot approach.
  • You have not blocked the animal’s route or burrow.
  • You have not fed, touched, chased, photographed at close range, treated or captured it.
  • You have recorded the location and observations from a safe distance.
  • You have contacted local wildlife rescue if injury, illness, mange, orphaning or a joey is possible.
  • You have paused any work that could disturb a burrow until local rules and expert advice are clear.

For a healthy wombat, leaving it undisturbed is the intervention. For any sign of a welfare problem, expert advice—not improvised care—is the safe next step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I move a healthy wombat out of my yard?

Usually no. Keep children and pets away, leave a quiet route open, and allow it to leave or rest without disturbance. Do not chase it or attempt relocation.

Can I give a wombat food or water?

No. Feeding encourages close contact and is not a substitute for professional advice, particularly if the wombat is injured or orphaned.

What should I do if the wombat has mange?

Do not touch, catch or medicate it. Keep people and animals away and contact a local wildlife rescue service for instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I remove a joey from its mother’s pouch?

Not before speaking with a wildlife rescue provider. Report what you can see and follow expert directions; do not carry the joey indoors or offer food or milk.

Can I block or fill an unused-looking burrow?

Do not do so without checking your state’s wildlife authority. An apparently quiet burrow may still be active, and destroying an active burrow can kill wombats.

Can I use the NSW wombat rescue code to treat one myself?

No. The NSW fourth-edition code, dated June 25, 2026, is for authorized rescuers and rehabilitators. Household animal handling should be directed by a local rescue service.

Who should I call if a wombat is injured?

Contact a current local wildlife rescue or rehabilitation provider or your state wildlife authority. Give the location, visible observations and nearby hazards, and do not attempt capture or transport.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are wombats dangerous to approach?

Yes. Official Tasmanian guidance warns that wombats can bite and scratch severely, especially when injured, afraid or defending territory. Keep your distance and never enter a burrow.

The Bottom Line

Keep a healthy wombat undisturbed. Secure people and pets, avoid feeding or handling, and never pursue it into a burrow. For injury, illness, mange, a possible joey or a property conflict, contact a current local wildlife rescue or state authority and follow its instructions.
