How to Help Scientists Search for Black Holes From Home

You can help scientists search for hidden black holes by classifying stellar-brightness graphs in the Black Hole Hunters project on Zooniverse. No telescope or astronomy equipment is needed: volunteers inspect supplied data and flag light curves with a possible lensing signal. A flagged curve is a candidate for scientific follow-up, not a confirmed discovery.

What to do

  1. Open the Black Hole Hunters project on Zooniverse and choose its start or classify option if a workflow is available.
  2. Read the project’s on-screen guidance, then inspect the supplied graph of a star’s brightness over time.
  3. Flag a curve if it resembles the short, characteristic brightening shown in the project examples. Use the examples and notes about simulated curves to learn what the team is looking for.
  4. Submit your classification as a contribution to the research workflow. Scientists must review and follow up on candidates before any conclusion can be drawn.

Project activity can change. Check the live page to see whether classification is currently open; the page’s status and activity figures are dynamic.

What the graph may reveal

A black hole does not need to shine for astronomers to look for it. Its gravity can bend and focus light. In a binary system, if a black hole passes in front of its ordinary-star companion from our viewpoint, the star can briefly appear brighter. That temporary magnification creates a peak in a light curve—the graph of brightness over time.

The project asks volunteers to identify possible examples of this effect, called gravitational microlensing or self-lensing in this binary-star context. The light being magnified is the companion star’s; the black hole is not the source of a sudden flash.

Why a candidate is not a discovery

A curve that looks promising is only a possible signal. Other explanations and the details of the data need to be assessed, so a volunteer’s flag is a lead for scientific review rather than proof that a black hole has been found.

Why simulated curves appear

The project FAQ says microlensing events are rare. It describes simulated curves as a way to show volunteers the kinds of shapes to look for and to estimate the weakest magnification they might detect. Simulations are examples, not observed events; the FAQ also cautions that they are not accurate enough to serve as machine-learning training data. These are statements from the project FAQ and may change as its methods evolve.

Which survey data the project discusses

Black Hole Hunters has discussed searches using two surveys. SuperWASP is the earlier ground-based survey search; TESS is the space-telescope dataset described on the project’s research page. Both provide time-series measurements of stellar brightness. They are different data sources, not competing participation options: follow the workflow currently offered on Zooniverse.

The project’s reported estimates are expectations, not confirmed finds. Its FAQ suggests about 10 possible examples across the SuperWASP dataset and about a hundred or so in TESS; the FAQ does not state a publication year for those estimates. The SuperWASP project page reports about 30 binary systems containing black holes and 100–200 containing neutron stars, but does not state a publication year for those counts. It also describes a computer-simulation prediction of hundreds of thousands of binary systems with non-accreting compact objects in the Galaxy. That prediction is not an observed census.

What has been reported so far

In a 29 October 2021 launch post, project lead Adam McMaster wrote: “We’re looking for an effect called gravitational microlensing, where an otherwise invisible black hole briefly magnifies the light from its companion star.” The same post reported almost 40,000 classifications in the first two days after launch. That is a historical participation figure, not a measure of current activity.

The project’s results page says results from the SuperWASP version are forthcoming and that the team is following up several interesting candidates. That status does not establish that any candidate is confirmed. The FAQ says no conclusive examples of black-hole self-lensing in a binary system had been found at the time represented by that page; because the FAQ and results page can change, consult their latest status rather than treating that statement as a current discovery update.
