Habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation are identified by the Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Foundation as leading causes of decline, so protecting connected forest is as important as rescuing individual animals.
This guide explains what to fund, how to assess an organization, and how to distinguish work in Indonesian Borneo from projects elsewhere on the island. No single purchase or campaign solves the problem; sustained field protection, restoration and cooperation with local communities do.

Why habitat protection is the central issue
Orangutans need large areas of connected forest for food, nesting trees and movement between seasonal resources. When forest is cleared, degraded by repeated fires or divided by roads and plantations, groups become isolated and conflict with people becomes more likely. The BOS Foundation describes habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation as “the leading causes for the decline in orangutan population” on its ecosystem-conservation page.

BOS Foundation work described for Indonesian Borneo includes forest protection and restoration, fire management, patrols, community involvement, canal blocking, replanting and cooperation with companies in oil-palm, timber and other sectors. The organization says an estimated 70% of wild orangutans in Borneo live outside protected areas; treat that as the foundation’s estimate, not as a universal current census figure.
Choose a contribution that matches the work you want to support
There is no reliable basis in the available sources for ranking a donation, a volunteer placement, a school fundraiser or advocacy by cost-effectiveness. The best choice depends on your skills, location, budget and preference for direct field work, habitat work or public engagement.
| Contribution | What it can support | Questions to ask before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Direct donation | Patrols, restoration, fire response, rescue, rehabilitation, research or community programs | Is the project and geography specific? Is the donation unrestricted or earmarked? Are current financial reports available? |
| Fundraising | Many small gifts for a named forest, patrol team, rehabilitation program or school activity | Can the organizer identify the beneficiary, transfer method and reporting date? |
| Volunteering | Practical help, professional skills, education or administrative support | What training, costs, safeguarding rules and conservation outcomes apply? Does the role avoid disturbing wildlife? |
| School or community engagement | Long-term awareness, local fundraising and lessons about forests and responsible consumption | Are the materials accurate and connected to a real conservation partner? |
| Advocacy and sharing | Verified action alerts, responsible land-use policy and wider support for habitat protection | Is the claim sourced, current and specific about the decision being requested? |
Donate to projects you can identify and evaluate
Start with a specific geography
“Borneo” includes Indonesian and Malaysian territories, and a program operating in one part of the island should not be presented as island-wide. The BOS Foundation’s FAQ says its work with local communities and the Indonesian government takes place in Central and East Kalimantan, in Indonesian Borneo. If you want to support a Malaysian project, check that the organization names a Malaysian site, partner and legal fundraising route rather than assuming that an Indonesian program covers it.
Look for a clear theory of action
A credible appeal should tell you what your money enables: for example, a patrol team and its guard post, fire-management equipment, native-tree planting, a canal-blocking project, community conflict-response work or long-term care for rescued orangutans. Vague promises to “save the rainforest” make it difficult to judge results. Ask whether the project protects existing forest, restores degraded habitat, improves management outside protected areas, or provides rescue and rehabilitation; these are related but different activities.

Read current reporting and financial information
Check the organization’s latest annual, project and financial reports before donating. The BOS Foundation says its financial reports are externally audited and that current and past reports are available through its resources menu. An audit does not prove that every project is effective, but accessible reporting lets you examine income, spending, project locations and stated outcomes. If a report is old, missing or inconsistent with the appeal, ask for clarification before sending money.
Confirm how restricted gifts work
An appeal may let you designate a forest, patrol or emergency. Find out whether the organization can redirect funds if conditions change, what happens when a target is exceeded, and whether a payment is recurring. Keep the confirmation and review later updates against the promise made at the time of donation.

How to assess an organization before giving
- Define your priority. Decide whether you want to fund habitat protection, restoration, fire mitigation, research, rescue and rehabilitation, education or community programs.
- Pin down the place. Record the forest, reserve, district or island country named in the project description. “Borneo” alone is not enough detail.
- Check the date. A plan covering 2023–2025 or an undated web figure should not be presented as a current result in your own fundraising or social posts.
- Read the report. Look for activities completed, challenges, spending, partners, monitoring methods and the next reporting period.
- Examine accountability. Look for audited or independently reviewed financial statements, legal registration information, contact details and a way to ask questions.
- Match the appeal to the evidence. If a page describes patrols, do not assume your gift pays for restoration; if it describes rehabilitation, do not assume it protects a wild forest unless that is stated.
- Recheck before recurring gifts. Projects, payment processors and priorities change. Review the organization annually and cancel or amend a recurring gift if the information no longer fits your intent.
Fundraise effectively at school, work or in your community
Small fundraisers can create flexible support and introduce people to habitat issues without requiring specialist knowledge. A transparent fundraiser has four elements:

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
- A named beneficiary and project: link to the organization’s own donation page and state the geography.
- A precise target: explain whether the target is for general conservation or a restricted appeal. Do not invent a claim such as “one donation protects one hectare” unless the beneficiary publishes that conversion.
- A safe payment path: use the nonprofit’s official payment system where possible, or keep a complete record of money collected and transferred.
- A follow-up: publish the amount sent, date, receipt and any later project update, while protecting donors’ personal information.
Schools can combine a lesson on forest fragmentation with a sponsored activity, a presentation from a qualified conservation educator or a letter-writing exercise focused on a specific, verifiable policy request. Avoid activities that encourage handling wildlife, buying unverified “adoptions” or treating orangutans as entertainment.
Volunteer without adding pressure to animals or communities
Volunteer opportunities vary from office, translation, fundraising and data work to field placements. A responsible program should explain the role, supervision, training, accommodation, costs, insurance, safeguarding and how success is measured. Ask whether volunteers will have contact with orangutans. Close contact, feeding or handling can increase stress, disease transmission and dependency, even when advertised as an attractive experience.
Professional volunteers should offer a skill the project has requested rather than designing an independent study after arrival. Field research normally requires local permissions, trained supervision and protocols that avoid disturbing animals or damaging habitat. If a placement cannot explain those safeguards, choose a remote or fundraising role instead.

It is reasonable to ask companies that buy agricultural or timber products how they protect forests, prevent fires and address human-orangutan conflict. BOS Foundation describes working with oil-palm, timber and other companies on land-management practices intended to protect biodiversity and mitigate conflict. That shows why corporate engagement can be part of the solution, but it does not make every product from a sector automatically responsible.
Avoid blanket instructions such as “never buy palm oil” as though one individual purchase guarantees habitat protection. Products differ by source, certification, traceability and enforcement, and the evidence supplied here does not establish that a particular brand or product protects Bornean forest. If you contact a company, ask for the production region, no-clearing commitments, high-conservation-value forest safeguards, fire prevention, grievance process and public progress reports. Treat a marketing claim as unverified until those details are available.

Share accurate information and action alerts
Awareness helps when it leads to a concrete, verified action. Before reposting an appeal:
- Check the original organization, publication date and geographic scope.
- Separate wild-population information from figures for rescued or released animals.
- Do not turn an organization’s estimate into an independently measured current statistic.
- Link to the original page rather than a screenshot or shortened link.
- Explain exactly what readers can do: donate, attend a briefing, contact a decision-maker, join a fundraiser or read a report.
The BOS Foundation’s FAQ reports that it has helped improve the lives of more than 1,000 orangutans through rescue, rehabilitation, release, translocation and long-term care; it reports 497 releases since 2012 and 27 recorded wild-born babies among those released. These are organization-reported figures from a page without a visible publication year, not independently audited population estimates. If you use them in a fundraiser, label them that way and recheck the page first.

Month 1: choose a focus
Select one or two priorities—such as peat-forest restoration, patrols, community conflict response or research—and learn which Bornean geography your chosen organization covers.
Months 2–3: vet and make a first contribution
Read the latest project and financial information, confirm donation terms and make a one-time gift you can afford. Save the receipt and the project description that influenced your choice.
Best Value
Months 4–6: involve other people
Run a transparent fundraiser, school session or workplace briefing. Use only current, sourced figures and direct participants to the beneficiary’s own payment page.
Months 7–9: add informed advocacy
Ask a company, local institution or elected representative a specific question about forest protection, traceability, fire prevention or conflict mitigation. Share the response accurately, including uncertainty.
Months 10–12: review results
Read the organization’s next update, compare activities with the original appeal and decide whether to renew, change or stop your support. A sustained, informed contribution is more useful than a recurring payment you never monitor.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming all Borneo work is the same: identify Indonesian versus Malaysian locations and the exact landscape.
- Confusing releases with wild-population recovery: an animal released or a baby recorded after release is not a population census.
- Using expired plans as current news: the Orangutan SAFE document covers 2023–2025; confirm any post-2025 partnership separately.
- Choosing on overhead alone: low administrative spending does not by itself demonstrate habitat impact; examine project evidence and governance.
- Paying an unofficial collector: use the beneficiary’s official donation route or retain a complete audit trail.
- Promoting wildlife contact: avoid experiences that prioritize photos or handling over animal welfare and disease prevention.
- Expecting one consumer boycott to solve deforestation: combine responsible purchasing and corporate questions with direct conservation support.
What meaningful help looks like
Meaningful help is specific, geographically honest and sustained. It supports the people who patrol and restore forests, the communities living alongside orangutans, and the research and reporting needed to improve decisions. Whether you give money, time, teaching, professional skills or public attention, first identify the work, the place and the evidence that will show what happened. That standard protects donors from vague claims and gives conservation partners the dependable support that long-term habitat protection requires.
