To keep Letho alive and bring him to Kaer Morhen, finish Ghosts of the Past before you start The Isle of Mists, follow him through the quest without provoking Vester’s men, and invite him to Kaer Morhen once he wakes. The quest is missable, so the order of play matters as much as the individual choices.
What Ghosts of the Past is and why it can disappear
Ghosts of the Past is a secondary quest set in Velen that involves Letho of Gulet. Gamer Guides lists it as part of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and recommends finishing it before moving on to The Isle of Mists. If you start that later quest first, the Letho storyline can be closed off for good.

Availability depends on the game’s record of whether Letho survived The Witcher 2. In a new game, you can reproduce that state by choosing the option that simulates a Witcher 2 save. Gamer Guides says that when Morvran Voorhis asks about Letho during the Imperial Audience, the reply to pick is “That alliance still alive? What happened to Letho?” This keeps the simulated Letho-alive state in place. The same guide then points you toward Lindenvale and Dolores, whose request starts The Fall of House Reardon, a quest that overlaps with the Letho story.

The route below follows the third-party walkthroughs. Dialogue wording and the exact sequence may vary slightly between versions of the game, so if a prompt does not match, check the objective log before continuing.

- Search Reardon Manor. The estate near Lindenvale is full of traps. Activate Witcher Senses to follow the noise to the barn, then climb the ladder to the loft, where Letho is hiding. Witcher.tools, an unofficial fan site with no date on the page, lists the quest at suggested level 6 and up to 125 experience points. Those are in-game values, not measured statistics.
- Deal with the hunters. The dialogue options do not let you avoid the fight. According to the walkthroughs, the hunters attack Geralt when he leaves the barn. Defeat them, then continue with Letho.
- Stay close on the ride to Louis. Letho confronts Louis, the man who betrayed his location. Keep pace with him. If Geralt falls too far behind, Letho rides on and the quest ends. The Louis encounter turns into a fight whichever dialogue options you pick, according to the guide.
- Let Letho handle Vester. Before the confrontation, Letho tells Geralt “Don’t interfere, no matter what happens.” Follow that request, because the staged death depends on it. See the choice table below for the exact replies.
- Invite him to Kaer Morhen. After Letho wakes and says he needs to disappear, suggest Kaer Morhen. The walkthrough says he later appears during The Battle for Kaer Morhen. If Geralt recommends another hiding place instead, the guide says Letho does not appear again.
The choices that change Letho’s fate
Two decisions shape the outcome. The first decides whether Vester’s men believe Letho is dead. The second decides where he goes afterward.
