If Instagram has disabled your teen’s account because it believes the account holder may be under the minimum age, recovery requires the teen to sign in to that exact account and complete the age-review instructions Instagram displays. Submit truthful age information and only the verification method offered in the account’s country and review flow. A parent’s supervision settings cannot by themselves restore a disabled account.
First establish which situation you have: an account that still opens but has Teen Account limits, or an account that is deactivated and requests age evidence. Those states look similar in a worried family’s inbox but require different actions.

Identify whether the account is restricted or disabled
Ask the teen to open Instagram and sign in to the affected username. Read the message on the screen rather than relying on a notification, rumor, or a third-party “recovery” service. The distinction is decisive:

Meta says Instagram requires users to be at least 13 in most places, with a higher minimum age in some countries. If Meta determines that an account may belong to someone below the applicable minimum, it can deactivate the account and require proof of age through its verification process to prevent deletion. The minimum is a rule about eligibility, not a promise that every account displaying Teen Account features has been incorrectly flagged.

What to do when Instagram has deactivated the account
- Sign in to the original account. Use the teen’s exact username, email address, or phone number and the current password. Avoid opening a new account while the review is pending; a new account does not transfer the old profile, posts, followers, or messages.
- Read the age-review prompt completely. Note whether it asks for an identification document, a video selfie or Yoti facial age-estimation check, or another option. The available choices can differ by country, account, and the risk checks applied to that account.
- Follow the displayed upload or capture instructions. Use the button in Instagram’s own sign-in flow or the official Help Center route that Instagram presents. Do not send documents to an address supplied by someone in a direct message.
- Enter the teen’s real details. The name and date of birth should correspond to the person who owns the account and to the evidence requested. If the birthday on the profile is wrong, explain that through the review process rather than inventing an adult birthday.
- Submit once the evidence is legible and complete. Keep the confirmation screen, reference number, or email receipt if Instagram provides one. Do not repeatedly upload different documents simply because a decision has not appeared immediately.
- Monitor the same account and its contact email. Instagram may return a request for clearer evidence or a result in the sign-in flow. There is no universally established appeal deadline or guaranteed restoration period, so rely on the instructions attached to this account rather than a timetable found in an old post.
Meta’s current explanation says that when it suspects someone is misrepresenting their age—including trying to change a birthday from under 18 to an adult age—it may require an ID or Yoti facial age-estimation tool. That description is a high-level account of the system, not a promise that both choices will appear to every user.
Prepare truthful age evidence
Use the teen’s own identity
A parent can help operate the phone, read the instructions, and check that a file is clear, but the evidence must belong to the teen who owns the account. Do not upload a parent’s passport, driving licence, or other document as if it proves the teen’s age. A mismatch can delay the review or cause Instagram to reject the submission.
Correct a wrong birthday honestly
Teens sometimes entered an incorrect birthday when the account was created. If the account’s date of birth is wrong, use the age-review form to state the correct date and provide the genuine evidence Instagram requests. Do not “correct” it by changing the profile to an adult birthday, borrowing an older sibling’s details, or creating a replacement account that bypasses the minimum-age rule. An inaccurate adult birthday can trigger the very misrepresentation checks that caused the deactivation.
Make a document image usable
- Photograph the complete document in good light, without glare, cropped corners, or fingers covering key fields.
- Use the file type, size, and camera orientation specified in the on-screen form.
- Do not edit, blur, or digitally alter the date of birth, name, or photograph unless Instagram’s instructions specifically tell you to hide a field.
- Keep a private copy of what was submitted and delete unnecessary copies from shared devices afterward.
If the teen does not have the document requested, stop at the official prompt and check whether it offers another method. Do not substitute unrelated paperwork or pay a service that claims it can “verify” the account outside Instagram.

Understand the verification methods Instagram may offer

Meta’s June 23, 2022 announcement described ID, video-selfie estimation, and social-vouching experiments. Those details are useful historical context, not a current menu. Meta’s May 5, 2026 explanation instead discusses ID and Yoti age estimation for suspected age misrepresentation. The current account prompt controls what can actually be submitted.
What parents can and cannot do
Parents can provide practical help
- Stay with the teen while they sign in and read the notice.
- Help compare the requested information with the teen’s genuine documents.
- Check that the phone has a stable connection and that the upload is made inside Instagram’s official flow.
- Keep a record of the date and confirmation without sharing the teen’s documents with an outside service.
- Help the teen understand any follow-up request and submit only the requested material.
Supervision is not account recovery
Teen Account protections apply when the account remains usable. Meta says these protections include built-in limits on who can contact teens and the content they can see. Depending on the market and product version, a parent may also be able to set daily limits or blocked hours. Those controls manage an active account; they do not overturn an age-related deactivation or replace age evidence.
Meta’s February 2025 Teen Accounts announcement for India described parental approval for less restrictive settings for teens under 16, along with daily limits and blocked hours. Those are localized product details and should not be assumed to appear in every country. If the account is still accessible, open the supervision area shown in the teen’s and parent’s Instagram apps and follow the local instructions. If the account is disabled, finish the age review first.
Privacy questions about age checks
Families often hesitate because an age review can involve sensitive identity or facial information. Read the privacy notice shown in the current verification screen before submitting anything. Do not assume that a description from an older test still governs today’s flow.

In its 2022 announcement, Meta said age-verification information would not be visible on a profile. It described a then-tested video selfie as being shared with Yoti for an age estimate and deleted after age confirmation, and said an uploaded ID was securely stored and deleted within 30 days. Those statements describe that dated test and should not be treated as a universal retention policy for every current country or method.
Meta’s 2026 article, corrected July 31, 2026, says its age-assurance AI does not use biometric data, create facial fingerprints, or identify a person in an image. Meta describes the system as analyzing general visual patterns that may suggest someone is underage. This is Meta’s description of its own technology. For the exact handling of a particular submission, rely on the notice attached to that review flow.
If the account still opens but has Teen Account restrictions
Do not file an age appeal merely because the account has stricter settings. An accessible account may be operating exactly as designed for a teen. Check the profile, messages, notifications, and settings for signs such as:

- Limits on who can message, mention, or add the teen to group chats.
- More conservative recommendations or warnings around sensitive content.
- Private-by-default settings or prompts encouraging the teen to keep the account private.
- Sleep or quiet-time reminders, daily time limits, or blocked hours configured through supervision.
If a setting is inappropriate for the teen’s age or family situation, use the supervision controls and the in-app reporting or help options. Do not attempt to defeat a safety setting by changing the birthday to an adult age. A restriction that leaves the account usable is not evidence that Instagram has deleted it.

Troubleshoot common failure points
The age form does not appear
Sign out of other Instagram accounts, reopen the affected account’s sign-in flow, and use the exact notice attached to that username. If the screen shows only a password or security problem, use account-access recovery rather than uploading an ID to an unrelated form. Availability of an appeal button can vary by country and account, so do not infer that the absence of one means a permanent decision.
The upload is rejected
Read the rejection wording. If Instagram requests a clearer image or a different document, correct only that issue: use the teen’s own valid evidence, avoid glare and cropping, and submit through the same official prompt. Do not alter the document or send multiple unrelated files.
The teen entered an adult birthday
Do not keep changing the birthday to find a value that passes. State the accurate date during the review and provide the requested evidence. Meta specifically says suspected attempts to change an under-18 birthday to an adult age can lead to age verification.

A person offers paid recovery
Ignore anyone promising guaranteed reinstatement, a secret employee contact, or a bypass of the age check. Instagram’s process is tied to the account and its displayed instructions. Giving a stranger a password, one-time code, ID image, or payment can create a separate account-takeover and identity-theft risk.
No decision arrives
Check the account’s sign-in message and the email address associated with it, including spam and filtered folders. Keep the submission confirmation. Because the sources do not establish a universal response time or appeal window, do not rely on a deadline stated by an unofficial forum. If Instagram provides a follow-up path in the account, use that path and keep the teen’s information consistent.
After Instagram restores access
- Confirm the birthday. Check that the account now shows the teen’s real date of birth. Do not change it to an adult date to remove protections.
- Secure the account. Change the password if it was shared during the incident, enable two-factor authentication where available, and review active sessions and connected apps.
- Review privacy settings with the teen. Confirm who can contact, mention, tag, or add the teen to groups, and discuss what information is visible publicly.
- Set supervision only if appropriate. Parents and teens can agree on time limits, blocked hours, and content boundaries available in their region. These are ongoing safety choices, not a substitute for truthful age information.
- Save the account’s recovery details privately. Keep the current email and phone number accessible to the teen and parent without storing passwords in a public note or sending codes through messages.
What the evidence does not establish
No official source reviewed provides a success rate for age appeals, a universal processing time, or a guarantee that every disabled account will be restored. Exact screens, accepted documents, retention language, and appeal windows can change by country, age category, and account history. A careful recovery plan therefore has one fixed principle—use the official prompt and truthful evidence—and several variable details that must be read from the teen’s current screen.
Meta summarized the purpose of its age checks in a June 23, 2022 announcement: “Knowing people’s age allows us to provide appropriate experiences to different age groups, specifically teens.” Its May 5, 2026 statement says, “We require everyone to be at least 13 to use Instagram or Facebook.” Those statements explain why the review exists; they do not guarantee a particular outcome for an individual account.
