To help a coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) through heat and drought, first check the soil, then apply water slowly and deeply across the broad root zone—not just at the trunk. Keep the upper soil moist but not saturated, cover it with a loose layer of organic mulch, remove competing turf and weeds, and avoid fertilizer, heavy pruning, root disturbance, and soil compaction while the tree is stressed.
Start by checking whether the root zone is actually dry
Redwood browning is not proof that the tree needs unlimited water. Poor drainage, compacted soil, salt, high pH, root damage, competing plants and disease can all produce stress. Before changing irrigation, inspect the soil in several places beneath and beyond the canopy.

- Push a soil probe, long screwdriver or narrow trowel into the ground in at least three locations. Test near the canopy edge as well as closer to the trunk, and include one area outside the canopy if possible.
- Examine soil from the surface down to about 18 inches. Dry, hard soil that resists the probe indicates a need for irrigation; cool, muddy soil or standing water indicates a drainage or overwatering problem.
- Check again several hours after watering. Water should have moved into the root area rather than running off, pooling or wetting only the top inch.
- Note recent rain, local watering restrictions, soil type, tree age and exposure. These factors matter more than a fixed calendar schedule.
San Luis Obispo County UC Master Gardener guidance summarizes the target as: “Keep the top 18 inches of soil moist, but not soggy.” That is a moisture condition to monitor, not a universal volume that every redwood requires.

Understand why heat is especially hard on coast redwoods
Coast redwoods evolved in a narrow coastal climate with cool temperatures, frequent fog and dependable moisture. Summer fog reduces evaporative water loss and can add moisture through fog drip. Inland valleys and other sites beyond the fog belt expose the tree to hotter air, lower humidity, drying winds and longer intervals without rain.

Oregon State University Extension notes that dry locations, particularly beyond the Cascades and in drought-prone areas, may not support healthy redwood growth without irrigation or intensive management. UC ANR likewise describes redwoods as limited beyond the fog belt to moist sites. A redwood in a cool, foggy garden therefore has a different water demand from one beside pavement in a hot inland valley.
Redwoods have shallow, fibrous roots that spread widely. Many roots are in the upper soil rather than deep beneath the trunk, so a short burst from a sprinkler can leave the tree thirsty even when the surface looks wet. Roots also dislike being buried, severed, compacted or kept continuously waterlogged.
Water slowly and deeply over the entire root area
The most reliable drought response is broad, slow irrigation that penetrates the soil. Extend watering around and beyond the canopy instead of concentrating it at the trunk. The outer portions of the root zone can be as important as the area directly beneath the branches.

How often should you water during a drought?
There is no safe one-size-fits-all schedule. Check soil moisture and water when the upper root zone begins to dry, then allow the water to soak in without leaving the soil saturated. Sandy or rapidly draining soil may need more frequent applications than clay; a newly planted tree needs more attentive monitoring than an established one; and fog, rainfall, shade and local restrictions can change the interval.

One local estimate from the UC Master Gardeners of San Luis Obispo County is approximately 10 gallons per day, or 70 gallons per week, for mature redwoods in that county. It is a regional estimate, not a transferable prescription. Tree size, soil, climate, establishment, recent rainfall and local regulations can make the appropriate amount substantially different elsewhere.
A practical deep-watering procedure
- Clear hoses, sprinklers and emitters from areas where they could damage the trunk or expose roots.
- Lay the delivery line in a broad circle or series of overlapping loops from near the canopy edge to beyond it. Do not create a single wet spot at the base.
- Begin with a low flow rate. If water runs downhill, pools or forms channels, stop and let it infiltrate before continuing.
- Move the hose or adjust emitters so several sections of the root area receive water. A soaker hose is one inexpensive option for slow delivery, but it is not a substitute for checking the soil.
- After the cycle, probe the ground again. Continue in shorter cycles until moisture has reached the upper 18 inches without producing soggy conditions.
- Recheck the soil during the next hot spell and after rain. Change the interval rather than blindly repeating the same volume.
UC Master Gardener guidance puts the principle plainly: “Long, deep soakings are required; not short, shallow irrigation.”
| Watering approach | What it does well | Common problem | How to use it more safely |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soaker hose in broad loops | Delivers water slowly over a large area and can limit runoff. | A hose left in one position wets only a narrow strip. | Encircle the root area, overlap coverage and verify moisture with a probe. |
| Low-flow drip emitters | Allow measured, slow application where the layout covers the roots. | Too few emitters or placement near the trunk leaves most roots dry. | Add coverage outward toward and beyond the canopy; inspect for clogged emitters. |
| Hand-held hose with a gentle flow | Useful for targeted, small-area soaking and irregular sites. | Fast flow causes runoff and encourages shallow wetting. | Use several positions and pause between passes so water infiltrates. |
| Short lawn-sprinkler cycles | May provide temporary surface cooling. | Much of the water evaporates or wets only the surface and foliage. | Do not rely on it as the primary drought treatment; confirm root-zone moisture. |
Use mulch to keep roots cooler and slow evaporation
Spread organic wood chips, bark or another suitable organic mulch over the root area. A loose surface layer reduces evaporation, moderates soil temperature and limits competition from weeds. Keep the mulch permeable so irrigation and rain can enter the soil.
Local UC recommendations vary with conditions: one guidance source suggests about 2 to 4 inches when needed, while another drought resource recommends around 4 inches. Treat those as practical ranges rather than an exact universal depth. Replenish material as it decomposes, but do not continually build a deep mound.

Correct mulch placement
- Leave a visible gap around the trunk and root flare. Mulch touching bark holds moisture against the trunk and can encourage decay or pest problems.
- Keep the surface broad, extending through the main root area and, where practical, toward and beyond the canopy edge.
- Apply mulch over soil rather than burying exposed roots or changing the grade around the tree.
- Water through the mulch and check the soil beneath it; a damp surface does not prove that the full root zone is moist.
Reduce competition and protect the shallow roots
Turfgrass, weeds, dense groundcovers and thirsty shrubs compete with redwood roots for the same limited moisture. Remove or reduce that competition beneath the canopy and in the surrounding root area. Replace turf with an organic mulch layer or carefully selected low-water planting that will not require frequent cultivation.
Keep vehicles, play equipment and repeated foot traffic away from the root area. Compacted soil contains fewer air spaces, sheds irrigation and restricts fine roots. Avoid trenching, digging, grade changes and mechanical cultivation under the canopy. Even shallow excavation can sever a large number of feeder roots.
Pause fertilizer and routine pruning while the tree is stressed
Do not apply routine fertilizer to a drought-stressed redwood. Fertilizer can stimulate new growth at a time when the tree cannot supply enough water, increasing demand and the risk of additional stress. Wait until the tree has recovered and a local soil or plant assessment shows a genuine nutrient need.
Likewise, avoid cosmetic or heavy pruning during heat and drought. Removing live foliage reduces the tree’s ability to produce energy and can expose remaining branches to sun and drying wind. Remove only branches that are dead, diseased or damaged, using proper pruning cuts and observing local safety requirements. Large, high or hazardous branches are work for a qualified arborist.

How to interpret browning, shedding and new growth
Some interior browning is normal. UC Cooperative Extension explains that older interior leaves may yellow, brown and drop in late summer or early fall, and short twigs may naturally brown and fall. This seasonal shedding is different from progressive dieback at branch tips or throughout the crown.
| Observed sign | What it may mean | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Older interior leaves yellow, brown and drop late in summer or early fall | Normal aging and shedding can produce this pattern, especially when new growth remains healthy. | Check soil moisture and monitor the overall crown rather than reacting to every dropped leaf. |
| Brown, scorched foliage after hot, dry weather | Inadequate water or intense heat may have damaged leaves. | Begin broad, slow irrigation and mulch; do not assume damaged leaves will turn green again. |
| New growth at branch tips remains green and extends | A positive sign for those branches. | Maintain steady root-zone moisture and avoid fertilizer or unnecessary pruning. |
| Progressive dieback, thinning across the crown or many dead branch tips | Prolonged drought, root problems, pests or another environmental stress may be involved. | Inspect drainage and irrigation and arrange a local qualified-arborist assessment. |
| Visible insects, galleries, sawdust-like material or rapid decline | Drought-stressed trees can become vulnerable to bark beetles and other pests. | Seek prompt in-person diagnosis; do not respond by simply increasing water. |
UC Cooperative Extension notes that inadequately watered redwoods can develop brown or scorched leaves and may subsequently be attacked by bark beetles. These observations are warning signs, not a remote diagnostic key. A photo or a single brown branch cannot establish the cause.

When water runs off
Compacted or clay soil may reject a fast application. Use shorter, repeated cycles at a low flow, pausing long enough for infiltration. Keep mulch loose and avoid walking on wet soil. If water repeatedly ponds, investigate grading and drainage rather than adding still more irrigation.
When the soil stays wet
Constantly saturated soil deprives roots of oxygen and can cause decline that resembles drought. Stop routine watering until the soil begins to dry, clear blocked drainage where feasible and keep mulch from forming a dense, water-repellent mat. Persistent saturation warrants site assessment.

When only the surface is wet
This usually indicates short, shallow irrigation or poor distribution. Move the hose or emitters across a wider area, reduce the flow and extend the soak. Probe below the surface before deciding that the tree has received enough water.
When browning continues despite moist soil
More water may not solve a problem caused by salt, high pH, compacted roots, poor drainage, disease, pests or heat exposure beyond the species’ tolerance. Review the site history and irrigation layout, then obtain an in-person evaluation if decline is persistent or spreading.
Adapt care to the tree’s location
A redwood in the coastal fog belt may need less supplemental irrigation because fog lowers evapotranspiration and contributes moisture. A tree in an inland valley may need a carefully managed irrigation system throughout summer, shade from reflected heat and more frequent soil checks. Trees beside walls, pavement or south- and west-facing exposures lose water faster than trees in sheltered, naturally moist soil.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a newly planted or recently transplanted redwood, monitor more frequently because its root system has not yet occupied the surrounding soil. For a mature tree, the root area can extend beyond the canopy, so confining irrigation to a small planting basin is inadequate. Always follow local water restrictions and avoid creating runoff onto sidewalks or neighboring property.
When to call a qualified arborist
Arrange a local assessment when dieback is persistent or spreading, when pests are visible, when the trunk or major limbs are damaged, or when you cannot determine whether the soil is too dry or too wet. An arborist can inspect the crown, roots, drainage, irrigation distribution and site conditions together. This is especially important for large trees near buildings, roads, utility lines or people.
Until the assessment, maintain moderate root-zone moisture, avoid fertilizer and heavy pruning, protect the soil from traffic and keep mulch away from the trunk. Do not make drastic root cuts or install deep irrigation trenches in an attempt to rescue the tree.
