The direct answer: buy a Bitcoin put option for the amount of exposure and time period you want to protect. If you hold that put to expiry, the option itself can lose no more than the premium you paid, plus fees and any financing or currency effects. That cap applies only to the option position—not to the Bitcoin you already own. Your coins can still fall in value, and the put may expire worthless if Bitcoin finishes above its strike.
A put spread can reduce the upfront debit by selling a second, lower-strike put, but it gives up protection below that lower strike. Before trading, match the contract’s underlying, multiplier, expiry, settlement currency and venue rules to your actual holding.

What a Bitcoin put hedge actually protects
A put gives its buyer the right, but not the obligation, to sell the option’s underlying at a fixed strike price at expiry. For a put with strike K, an underlying settlement price of ST and one unit of underlying, the expiry payoff is max(K − ST, 0). The buyer’s net result is that payoff minus the premium paid and any transaction costs.
If Bitcoin falls below the strike, the put gains value as the underlying moves lower. If Bitcoin finishes at or above the strike, the put expires out of the money and its payoff is zero. In that case, the premium is lost, but there is no additional loss on the long option itself. This is the bounded-loss feature that makes a purchased put useful as insurance.

It is essential to separate the option from the portfolio. Suppose you own 1 BTC and buy a put covering 1 BTC. A collapse in Bitcoin can reduce the value of your coin by thousands of dollars even while the put pays out. The put offsets part of that decline; it does not transform the entire holding into a position whose maximum loss is the premium.
What “risk no more than the premium” means
- Long put: maximum loss on the option position is the premium, before fees, financing and currency effects.
- Bitcoin holding: remains exposed to price declines, custody issues and any mismatch between your coins and the option’s reference asset.
- Portfolio hedge: depends on contract quantity, strike, expiry, settlement method and how closely the option tracks your holding.
Deribit’s educational explanation describes the put buyer’s loss as the premium when the option expires out of the money. That statement concerns the purchased option, not the value of a separate spot-Bitcoin position.
How to hedge Bitcoin with options: a decision process
Use the following sequence before choosing a contract. Skipping any one of these checks can leave you paying for protection that does not cover the exposure you think it does.
Recommended Free Tools
- Define the exposure. Record how much Bitcoin you own, where it is held, and the date on which you may need protection. Include planned purchases or sales only if they are reasonably certain.
- Choose the reference asset. Determine whether the option references spot Bitcoin, a Bitcoin futures contract or an index. A futures option can move differently from a spot holding around expiry and settlement.
- Calculate the contract quantity. Read the contract specifications and multiplier. One option is not automatically equal to 1 BTC.
- Choose the protection level. A strike near the current market price generally begins offsetting losses sooner and costs more. A lower strike usually costs less but leaves the first part of a decline unprotected.
- Choose the expiry. Protection ends at expiry unless you close, roll or replace the position. Select a date that covers the risk you are actually trying to insure.
- Confirm settlement and access. Check whether the result is paid in bitcoin, dollars or through a futures position, and whether your jurisdiction and account are eligible.
- Price the total cost. Include the premium, exchange and broker fees, bid-ask spread, funding or margin requirements and the cost of extending the hedge later.
Worked example: a fully paid long put
The following figures are illustrative, not a current market quote. Assume a holder owns 1 BTC and buys one put whose contract represents 1 BTC. Let the strike be $60,000, the expiry price be ST, and the premium be $2,000 per BTC. Ignore fees and assume the option references the same exposure as the spot holding.
| Bitcoin price at expiry | Put payoff | Put net result after $2,000 premium | Effect on 1-BTC spot holding |
|---|---|---|---|
| $70,000 | $0 | −$2,000 | Spot holding gains $10,000 versus a $60,000 starting price |
| $60,000 | $0 | −$2,000 | Spot holding is unchanged before costs |
| $50,000 | $10,000 | +$8,000 | Spot holding loses $10,000 versus $60,000 |
| $20,000 | $40,000 | +$38,000 | Spot holding loses $40,000 versus $60,000 |
At $50,000, the put offsets the spot loss before considering the premium, so the combined position is down roughly $2,000. At $20,000, the option’s gain offsets the coin’s decline below the strike, again leaving the combined result about $2,000 lower than an unhedged position at the starting reference point. Above $60,000, the put expires worthless and the holder has paid the $2,000 insurance cost while retaining the Bitcoin upside.
The example assumes perfect one-for-one tracking. If the contract covers 0.1 BTC, five BTC or a futures position, multiply the payoff by the contract’s quantity and account for the basis difference. The result may not offset the spot move dollar for dollar.

Choosing a strike: cheap insurance versus earlier protection
The strike determines when the put begins to have intrinsic value. A put struck below the current market price is commonly called out of the money. It normally requires less premium than a higher-strike put, but Bitcoin must fall farther before the option pays anything. A strike close to the market price tends to provide more immediate protection and costs more, all else equal.

- How much decline can you absorb before the hedge should respond?
- Are you protecting a hard floor, such as a repayment obligation, or simply reducing volatility?
- Would a lower premium be worth accepting an initial unprotected loss?
- Does the strike make sense for the option’s reference asset, rather than only for a spot price you are watching?
There is no universally correct strike. A long-term holder with a large tolerance for interim declines may select a lower strike to reduce insurance cost. Someone who must preserve a near-term dollar value may prefer a closer-to-the-money strike despite its higher premium.
Put spreads: reducing premium by giving up tail protection
A put spread combines a purchased put at a higher strike with a sold put at a lower strike and the same expiry. Let the long strike be K1, the short strike be K2, with K1 > K2. You pay the premium for the first put and receive the premium for the second, creating a net debit that is often smaller than buying the higher-strike put alone.
At expiry, the spread payoff per unit is:
- Above K1: zero.
- Between K2 and K1: K1 − ST.
- At or below K2: capped at K1 − K2.
The maximum spread payoff is therefore the distance between the strikes. Net profit equals that payoff minus the net debit and costs. Below the lower strike, further Bitcoin declines do not produce additional protection because the short put loses value at the same rate that the long put gains it.
| Structure | Upfront cost | Downside response | Protection below the lower strike | Option-position loss |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Long put | Full premium paid | Begins at the chosen strike and increases as the underlying falls | Continues to increase as the underlying falls | Premium, plus costs |
| Long put plus short lower-strike put | Net debit, usually lower than the long put alone in comparable conditions | Begins at the higher strike | Capped at the strike difference | Net debit if both legs are entered as a defined-risk spread and held to expiry, subject to fees and execution risks |
The spread is not free risk reduction. You are exchanging a lower upfront premium for a ceiling on the hedge’s payoff and the obligations associated with the short leg. Explain both strikes and the maximum payoff before placing the order.

Options on Bitcoin futures
CME’s cryptocurrency-options FAQ states: “Neither Cryptocurrency options nor futures will deliver underlying cryptocurrencies, although the value of these contracts are closely tied to the movement of the associated coin.” CME options reference Bitcoin futures rather than handing you spot Bitcoin. Depending on the listed contract, exercise may create a futures position that is then financially settled; CME Bitcoin Friday options use financial settlement. Read the exact contract specification before discussing assignment or delivery.
A futures-referenced option introduces basis risk: the futures price, its expiry convention and the spot price of your coins may diverge. The difference can be especially important near settlement. CME says access requires a registered futures broker, and the financially settled process described in its FAQ does not require a cryptocurrency wallet.
Inverse options settled in bitcoin
Deribit describes its inverse options as European-style: they are exercised at expiry and settled in the base asset. The long buyer pays the premium from the cash balance. “European” describes when exercise occurs; it does not prevent you from trading out of the position before expiry.
Bitcoin settlement changes your BTC balance rather than simply paying a fixed dollar amount. The fiat value of that payout therefore changes with Bitcoin’s price. Review the venue’s margin, liquidation, custody and counterparty terms as well as the option payoff.
What to verify on any venue
- Underlying: spot, futures contract or index.
- Contract multiplier and minimum order size.
- Quote and settlement currency.
- Exercise style and whether early exercise is possible.
- Expiry time zone and settlement price source.
- Margin rules for a short leg or futures position.
- Broker, exchange, jurisdiction and account eligibility.
- Bid-ask spread, open interest and ability to close the position.
Matching contract size to your Bitcoin holding
Hedge quantity is a calculation, not a slogan. Divide the Bitcoin exposure you want to hedge by the amount of underlying represented by one option, then adjust for the hedge ratio you actually want. A one-for-one hedge is only a starting point; some holders intentionally hedge a fraction of their coins.
CME’s Bitcoin-futures-options FAQ describes a contract unit tied to one Bitcoin futures contract representing five bitcoin. Other listed products can use different multipliers. If you own 1 BTC, one five-BTC option would be larger than your holding and could over-hedge it. Conversely, a 0.1-BTC contract would require multiple contracts for full notional coverage.

For futures options, calculate notional using the futures contract’s stated quantity, not the number of option tickets. Confirm whether the platform displays premium per BTC, per contract or in another unit before comparing quotes.
Expiry, rolling and the cost of temporary protection
A put protects only through its expiry. If your Bitcoin exposure continues, you must close the expiring option and buy a later one, or otherwise establish a new hedge. Rolling can require another premium, a new spread and taxes or fees, and the new option may be more or less expensive because volatility, time and market conditions changed.
Build an expiry plan
- Write down the date your underlying risk ends or the date you will reassess it.
- Choose an option expiry that reaches that date with a margin for operational delays.
- Set a calendar reminder well before expiry to review value, liquidity and settlement instructions.
- Decide in advance whether you will close, exercise, allow cash settlement or roll.
- Recalculate quantity and strike for the new period instead of automatically repeating the old trade.
Allowing an option to expire without understanding the settlement process can leave you with no hedge, a futures position or a BTC-denominated balance you did not expect.
Costs, liquidity and execution risks
The premium is visible, but it is not the only cost. A wide bid-ask spread can materially change the entry and exit result, particularly for far-out-of-the-money strikes or less-traded expiries. Market orders can fill across several price levels. A multi-leg spread also has execution risk if one leg fills before the other.
- Premium: paid for a long put or netted against the credit from a short leg.
- Trading fees: charged by the broker or venue.
- Spread cost: the difference between bid and ask, paid when entering and often again when exiting.
- Margin and collateral: especially relevant to a short put or futures position.
- Financing and currency effects: can alter the result when collateral or settlement is in another currency.
- Roll cost: incurred when protection is extended beyond the original expiry.
Deribit’s risk disclosure emphasizes that derivatives are complex and that price movement and liquidity create risks. A position that is theoretically defined-risk can still be difficult or expensive to close if the market is thin or the venue is unavailable.
Common failure modes and how to correct them
“The premium is capped, so my Bitcoin loss is capped.”
Why it fails: the cap applies to the long option, not the spot coins. Correction: model the combined value of the Bitcoin and option at several expiry prices.
Best Value
“One option hedges one bitcoin.”
Why it fails: contract multipliers vary. Correction: read the contract unit and calculate notional coverage before ordering.
“A futures option is the same as a spot-Bitcoin put.”
Why it fails: futures basis and settlement can differ from spot. Correction: compare the futures reference, expiry and settlement price with your coin exposure.
“A put spread gives the same protection for less money.”
Why it fails: the short lower-strike put caps the payoff below that strike. Correction: write down the maximum spread payoff and the range in which protection applies.

Practical checklist before submitting an order
- Have you stated the exact BTC amount and the fraction you intend to hedge?
- Does the option reference spot, a futures contract or an index?
- What is the multiplier in BTC or futures contracts?
- What are the strike, expiry date and settlement time?
- Is the premium quoted per unit or per contract?
- What is the maximum loss on the option or spread, including fees?
- For a spread, what are the lower strike and maximum payoff?
- Will settlement be in BTC, cash or a futures position?
- Can you legally access the venue through an eligible broker in your jurisdiction?
- How will you close, exercise or roll the position?
- What happens if liquidity disappears when you need to exit?
When a long put is preferable to a put spread
Choose the long put structure when preserving protection against an extreme decline matters more than minimizing the initial debit, and when you can accept losing the full premium if Bitcoin remains above the strike. It is the simpler payoff: downside protection continues below the strike without a sold lower leg.
A put spread can be reasonable when you have identified a specific loss range you want to offset and are willing to accept no additional option payoff below the lower strike. The decision is a budget-versus-protection tradeoff, not a claim that one structure is universally safer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLimits of a premium-only hedge
No options structure eliminates every risk. A long put can expire worthless, fail to track a spot position, end before the danger period, or be costly to replace. A spread adds short-leg obligations and caps the hedge. A BTC-settled contract can produce a payout whose dollar value changes with Bitcoin. Venue failure, custody arrangements, jurisdictional restrictions and liquidity are separate from the mathematical payoff.
The appropriate hedge amount depends on your exposure, time horizon, tolerance for residual loss and budget. This framework explains mechanics; it does not determine an individualized hedge ratio or replace advice from a qualified professional who understands your circumstances.
