To reduce npm supply-chain risk, control which dependency lifecycle scripts can run, consider delaying adoption of newly published versions, and protect the credentials used to publish packages. These measures address different risks: no single setting makes npm installs safe, and disabling install hooks does not stop every form of malicious code.

Why npm install scripts need a policy

Installing a dependency can give its lifecycle scripts an opportunity to run on a developer’s machine or CI runner before anyone deliberately runs the application. npm’s accepted install-script opt-in RFC describes the mechanism and historical examples, including more recent campaigns involving malicious install hooks. That is a reason to review install-time execution—not evidence that every compromise uses a postinstall script or that blocking hooks prevents all malicious behavior. Read npm RFC 0054.

Choose a policy based on the project’s compatibility needs and the level of review your team can maintain. An approval is a decision to permit a package’s script, not proof that the script is safe.

Choose how npm should handle lifecycle scripts

Block lifecycle scripts broadly with ignore-scripts

Set ignore-scripts=true or run npm ci --ignore-scripts to suppress package lifecycle scripts during installation. This can break packages that need install-time setup, such as native builds or generated files, so validate the application’s build and runtime behavior with the policy in place.

“Ignore scripts” does not prevent a user from explicitly requesting a script. For example, npm test or npm run still runs the named script; with ignore-scripts set, npm does not run that command’s associated pre or post scripts. npm’s npm ci v11 documentation describes this distinction.

Approve scripts for a project

For team-managed policy, npm’s install documentation points to the project’s allowScripts field or .npmrc. The policy matches a dependency’s resolved identity, rather than trusting only the package name it reports itself as. npm describes allow-scripts primarily for one-off or global contexts—such as npm exec, npx, and global installs—where there is no project package.json.

Project-scoped install, ci, update, and rebuild do not accept the command-line --allow-scripts option as a substitute for project policy. Keep approvals reviewable in the project rather than relying on an ad hoc command-line approval.

Make unreviewed scripts fail installation

Set strict-allow-scripts=true to turn an unreviewed install script into a hard error instead of a warning. Explicitly denied scripts are skipped; strict mode applies to packages that are neither approved nor denied. Optional dependencies that do not match the current operating system, CPU, or libc are not flagged when their scripts would not run. See the current npm install documentation for the policy details.

Review policy overrides and version behavior

npm documents --ignore-scripts and --dangerously-allow-all-scripts as overrides of the allowlist policy. The latter bypasses approvals and is described as a strongly discouraged migration escape hatch; --ignore-scripts takes precedence over it. If CI uses either override, review and document why: a package-level allowlist cannot provide the intended control when a broad override changes the behavior.

Script-policy behavior depends on the npm version in use. GitHub’s changelog dated July 8, 2026 describes npm’s v12 rollout: dependency lifecycle scripts and implicit node-gyp builds no longer run unless explicitly allowed. It directs users to npm approve-scripts --allow-scripts-pending to review approvals and commit the resulting allowlist in package.json. Check the exact npm CLI version and rollout state in the project’s development and CI environments before relying on that behavior. See GitHub’s dated changelog.

Use a release-age delay without trapping urgent fixes

The npm configuration key is min-release-age, not minimumReleaseAge. It takes a number of days; versions become eligible only after they have been available for longer than that window. npm does not establish one universally appropriate delay, so set a value according to your project’s tolerance for new-release risk and its ability to respond to security updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

min-release-age-exclude accepts package names and minimatch glob patterns. Excluding a package does not automatically exempt its dependencies: they remain subject to the age rule unless they also match an exclusion. npm’s install configuration documentation also describes before, an absolute date cutoff. When both settings apply in the same source, before takes precedence. npm’s normal configuration-source precedence still matters, so a higher-priority value can override a project-level value; check the effective configuration in the CI environment and keep the intended policy at the repository or project level.

Plan an exception path for security patches

An age window can delay adoption of a risky new release, but it can also prevent npm audit fix from installing a newly available patch. npm warns that this can leave the vulnerable version in place and cause a warning or non-zero exit. Define how maintainers will review and temporarily relax or exempt the age rule for an urgent fix, then restore the policy. The exception should involve human review rather than silently bypassing the cutoff.

Keep consumer install controls separate from publisher security

These controls address different parts of the supply chain. Install-script policy limits automatic execution by dependencies; release-age policy changes which new versions are eligible; trusted publishing reduces exposure of credentials used to publish a package. Neither publishing credentials nor publisher identity determines whether a consumer’s installation can run a dependency script.

Control Main protection Limitation or operational cost
ignore-scripts Broadly suppresses package lifecycle scripts during install. Can break packages that need install-time setup; explicitly requested scripts still run without their associated pre/post hooks. npm ci v11 docs
allowScripts with strict-allow-scripts Supports reviewable per-package policy and can fail installation for unreviewed scripts. Approvals need maintenance; documented overrides can change or bypass the policy. npm install docs
min-release-age Delays eligibility for very recently published versions. Can delay urgent security fixes; exclusions and configuration precedence need care. npm install docs
OIDC trusted publishing with provenance Reduces reliance on long-lived publish tokens and ties publication to a configured CI identity. Protects the publishing workflow, not consumers’ install-time execution. npm trusted publishing docs
FIDO2 security key Strengthens maintainer account authentication. Protects account access; it does not block malicious dependency code. npm threats and mitigations

Prefer OIDC over long-lived publish tokens when supported

npm trusted publishing uses OIDC so npm can trust a configured CI workflow without relying on long-lived publish tokens. npm lists npm CLI 11.5.1 or later and Node.js 22.14.0 or later as requirements. For supported GitHub Actions and GitLab CI/CD trusted publishing, npm says provenance attestations are produced automatically; it recommends preferring trusted publishing over tokens when available and keeping provenance enabled. These are protections for release workflows, not a substitute for consumer install policy. Check npm’s trusted-publishing requirements.

Protect maintainer accounts as a separate layer

npm’s threat guidance calls a security key its strongest authentication option and explains that it makes phishing difficult. A FIDO2 security key is relevant for maintainers securing npm accounts, but it cannot stop code from running when a consumer installs a dependency. Account authentication, publishing controls, and dependency-install policy should be treated as separate layers. See npm’s account-security guidance.

A practical policy for a project and its CI

  1. Check the npm version in use. Record the CLI version in development and CI, and verify which install-script behavior applies, especially if relying on the npm v12 rollout described by GitHub on July 8, 2026.
  2. Choose a script policy. Use broad suppression with ignore-scripts if compatibility permits, or maintain project-level approvals and consider strict mode so unreviewed scripts fail rather than pass with a warning.
  3. Validate compatibility. Exercise the real build and runtime paths to identify dependencies that require native builds or generated files. Treat required exceptions as reviewed permissions.
  4. Set and inspect release-age policy. Configure min-release-age at the project or repository level, check the effective value in CI, and review exclusions and any before cutoff.
  5. Write down the urgent-patch procedure. Decide who may review an exception, how the age restriction is relaxed or a package excluded temporarily, and how the regular policy is restored after the fix.
  6. Harden publishing separately. Use OIDC trusted publishing and provenance when supported, and strengthen maintainer sign-in with a security key. Do not treat either as a replacement for install controls.
