How to Handle Touch and Mouse Events in Cypress

Use Cypress .click() for ordinary user-facing clicks and .trigger() for precise mouse or touch event handlers. Learn the limits, examples, and debugging steps.

Use Cypress .click() for a normal, user-facing click that should include Cypress’s actionability checks and browser-like interaction. Use .trigger() when you need to dispatch a particular event—such as touchstart, mousemove, or mouseup—with the properties your application’s handler expects. A triggered event invokes listeners; it does not reproduce all browser default actions.

Choose between .click() and .trigger()

Start with the behavior your test is meant to verify: ordinary interaction or a specific event-handler path.

Test goal Use Important limitation
Click a button as a user would and verify the resulting UI .click() Cypress checks whether the element is actionable. A click may rerender or remove it, so query the result in a new chain.
Invoke a particular mouse or touch event listener .trigger('eventName', options) Dispatches the event but does not perform the browser’s full default actions.
Exercise a widget-specific mouse-drag handler A sequence of mousedown, mousemove, and mouseup triggers The coordinates and button properties depend on the widget’s implementation.
Proceed despite an actionability failure { force: true } on a supported action Skips checks such as visibility and coverage, which can hide a problem real users would encounter.

Cypress’s click API records that mouse and pointer events including mouseover, mousemove, mouseout, pointerdown, pointerup, and pointermove were added to .click() in version 3.5.0. That is an API history note, not a statement of the current Cypress release.

Test a normal click and its result

For a user-facing interaction, keep Cypress’s actionability checks enabled and assert on the changed UI using a fresh query:

cy.get('[data-cy=open-modal]').click()
cy.get('[data-cy=modal]').should('be.visible')

Do not rely on the clicked element remaining a safe subject for later chained commands. A click can cause a rerender or remove that element; Cypress marks further commands chained from the .click() subject as unsafe in that situation.

Dispatch a specific mouse event sequence

Use .trigger() when the test needs to call a handler with particular event names or properties. Cypress’s trigger API demonstrates this pattern for a jQuery UI Sortable drag:

The example’s which value and page coordinates are specific to that widget’s event handling, not universal requirements for every drag implementation. Inspect the application or widget handler to determine which values it reads.

When a handler inspects event type or position, Cypress also allows specifying a MouseEvent constructor and overriding coordinates. Choose the constructor and properties to match what the code under test expects; sending an event name alone may not be enough.

Dispatch touch events without claiming device emulation

For a touch-specific handler, trigger the event name the application listens for and supply any properties that handler requires. For example, a handler registered for touchstart can be reached with .trigger('touchstart', options); the required options depend on the implementation.

This dispatch tests an event listener. It does not, by itself, establish that Cypress has reproduced a real touchscreen, a gesture recognizer, or a mobile browser’s full touch behavior. The Cypress trigger API documents arbitrary event dispatch and its limits, but does not establish device-level touch emulation.

Keep actionability checks meaningful

Cypress action commands check whether an element can be acted on before firing their events. The interaction guide describes checks that can include visibility, disabled state, detachment, animation, and whether another element covers the target.

Use { force: true } only when bypassing those checks is intentional. It tells Cypress to fire despite failed actionability checks. That can be useful for a deliberately constrained test, but it also means the test may pass even though a user could not interact with the element normally.

Debug failures by checking the intended behavior

  • .click() fails before firing: Check whether the target is hidden, disabled, detached, animating, or covered. Use the Cypress command log and debug immediately before the action to inspect why Cypress considers it non-actionable.
  • The listener runs but the expected browser behavior does not happen: Check whether the test needs an action command rather than .trigger(). Trigger dispatches to listeners but does not implement the browser’s full default actions.
  • A drag or touch handler does not react: Inspect the handler and identify the event names and properties it reads. Add the expected coordinates or button values, and treat widget examples as implementation-specific.
  • An assertion fails after a click: The click may have rerendered the page or removed its target. Query the expected result again rather than continuing from the old subject.

Or skip the browser setup

If the goal is to capture a page screenshot rather than test a Cypress interaction, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. For example, use this cURL call; replace the URL with the page to capture and provide your API key:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot and page-information tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
